If you are replacing the VHF wire with a pre-made connector for the top (and you should), you have to feed from the top down. I re-wired my mast when it was down and used a variation of Josh's method. I taped a small line to the old wire and then taped the new wire to the string so I pulled the

Normally a conduit is riveted to the forward side of the mast. You'll probably want to have a service disconnect terminal block at the base of the mast if it doesn't already exist. Any existing spade/ring terminals will probably need to be cut off before pulling the existing cable out. Secure a

AGMs need to be topped off to 100%. Not every single use, but they will die young if used on a boat without shore power or solar. We sailors seldom motor enough to get that last 10% in. For a boat used for weekends and holidays on shore power with a modern charger set to AGM voltages, they

That is sort-of backwards. I have gel batteries. They are *very* sensitive to overcharging and can die very fast from too much voltage. OTOH AGMs will tolerate higher charging voltages, hence their popularity as drop-in replacements in airplanes, boats, and cars, but die pretty fast from

In my view the answer depends on how you intend to use the boat. If you are set up for cruising and need a lot of power, that’s one thing. If your power demands are not that high and you take relatively short trips like I do (normally less than eight hours; never more than 18 hours before the

+1 on the Trojan golf cart batteries; that’s typically what I spec’ed when doing marine electrical/electronics work for a living several years ago. Really good longevity, and they stay very consistent over their lifetime if cared for properly. Probably the best value out there. — Fred Fred

Glen Don’t be scarred away from AGMs. Persuasion came with 2-4d AGMs and a Group 31 starter. I replaced the Group 31 about 6 years ago from Canadian tire, still going. The important factor here is to charge them properly. I would say your are good to go as you already have AGMs. Mike C

I would suggest thinking very hard if you need AGMs. They are more expensive and require much better management and maintenance (i.e. quite specific charging regime). In normal use, they won't last longer, either. If you are forced to have a battery in the enclosed compartment (in your cabin),
