I know this most probably won't help any of you but my one lingering benefit of
military service is my 47 year USAA membership.  My boat policy dates from when
I purchased Touche' in 1999.  It is underwritten by USAA, not their partner
Progressive.  The adjuster was even surprised that it was an old legacy policy.

When Touche' was damaged in Hurricane Sally last year, the policy paid 100% of
the repairs including haul out.  Once I received the repair estimate from the
yard, USAA electronically transferred the funds to me within a day or two.

A buddy of mine had a USAA policy underwritten by Progressive.  His experience,
while good, wasn't as good as mine.

While I might save a few bucks on my premium by shopping around, I really don't
think I can beat the coverage.

My point here is don't just shop for low premiums.  Look hard at the coverage.
Are there deductibles?  Is it new for old?  Is there depreciation involved?
Does it drop during named storms?  My feeling is marine policies vary
tremendously.

tactics other than the start and it is unclear if that actually matters.
Nothing matters except staying on the foils going fast.  The boats are going 35
knots in 15 knots of wind so it all looks the same, upwind and downwind.   No
spinnakers, no crew running around the deck hoisiting and lowering sails, or
tacking.  Everyone stays in the same place throughout the race.  There is
absolutely nothing happening except the boat going through the water and
nothing that a normal sailor can related to.  It is impossible to tell why one
boat is ahead and another behind and why they change places at times.  Even the
graphics for who is ahead are really hard to decipher.  I also found the
commentary to be unhelpful.  I don’t think the people calling the race have any

Our 1st virtual zoom rendezvous was an absolute success.  People that
showed an interest were sent a personal invitation to participate.  Owners
from the West Coast, East Coast, Gulf of Mexico, New England and Canada
participated.

Basically, it was a greet and meet and then an open discussion and some
great, varied conversations took place.

This was a first for us and maybe for boating enthusiasts world-wide.

I am planning another rendezvous in the near future and would like some
suggestions.  Should it be just a greet and meet and then open discussion
or should we narrow in on a specific topic.  Let me know your ideas.

C Rendezvous: Cancel due to COVID-19?

  Last year, I
volunteered to host of the upcoming 2020 Mid-Atlantic C Rendezvous
in Baltimore MD in late-September.  We recently returned from the
relative safety of the Bahamas to a raging pandemic in the United States
and it is far from being over, even though Maryland has done quite well
in
controlling the virus.  I am in my seventies and catching COVID-19
could mean much more to me than simply being sick for several weeks—it
  could be a death blow.

  Consequently, I am
withdrawing as a host for the upcoming rendezvous and I will not be
attending one being held elsewhere.  I strongly encourage that this
year's rendezvous be cancelled but that is up to everyone else on this
list who lives in the Mid-Atlantic area.  In my opinion, a weekend
get together (even with friendly C owners) is simply not worth the
  risk of catching COVID-19.

  So, I am throwing out
the question to other possible attendees, should this year’s rendezvous
be
cancelled?  And, if not, who is willing to host it and

I am getting a bit confused.
“Hull” to me means the waterline and up, not bottom paint. The deck is the
deck. “Topsides” is generic for anything that isn’t bottom paint.
So is $125/ft. the hull, the deck, or both?
Thanks!

Jim already jumped on your question. But, yes, I had the topsides painted in
2017 by William and Beau
(the company name is Washington Yacht Service, but the phone number is the one

much less expensive). I’d need to check but I think it cost $125 per foot.

I had Imzadi painted in the early spring of 2017 - almost exactly 3 years ago.
On the recommendation of the guy who does most of th ework I can't do myself,
we used
Alexseal 2-part paint. Alexseal is an alternative to Awlgrip or Imron. William
reports very good results, and uses it for most of the paintwork he does. Comes
on a pretty wide range of colors, one of which was a bit darker than the faded
smoke white of Imzadi's
hull and might be a close match to the original C color. One big advantage
of the Alexseal paint is that it is about half the cost of Awlgrip. My cost for
getting the boat prepped and painted (white topsides, triple red boot stripe,
red cove stripe, red
 transom) was $125/foot - about $4800.

The paint has held up very well. Have had some black streaks from black
rubstrips on an floating dock that washed right off. Had one scratch from a
bolthead sticking
out of a piling, which turned out to be an easy repair using some surplus from
the original paint. The red transom shows no signs of fading yet.

Maintenance is to wash every 3 to 6 months with mild soap and water, and to
wash annually with a product they sell which I presume is similar to Awlcare.
BTW, the
Alexseal website also lists other alternatives to their maintenance product -
one of which I recall is made by Meguiars and is available from my local West
Marine.

In all honesty, there was one small problem when the boat was painted. When
they sprayed the red for the boot stripes and cove stripes over the white hull,
the thin
red paint leached under the edge of the green 3M masking tape amd left a fuzzy
edge. So William had to touch up the white, remask the stripes with this
fiendishly expensive 3M gold masking tape, and reshoot the red stripes. No
problem using the higher quality
 tape.

Very true about the protest flag. Recently our crew was the Race Committee boat
for club racing, and we witnessed a pretty severe rule violation at the start
line, but the violated boat didn't have a protest flag, and tried to use a hat
on the back stay instead. They knew it wouldn't be allowed so didn't file a
protest (although I think the offending boat may have later taken a penalty
turn as a precaution). I was surprised since these are all very experienced
sailors, but I suppose it was
just a Sunday club race. Presumably they would be better prepared in a more
serious race, but maybe not. There are a few skippers who are very aware of the
rules, and also a bit aggressive, and use this to their advantage to intimidate
other boats, knowing
that many will back down even if they don't have to.

boats do not even
carry a protest flag or if they do the crew does not know where to find it

middle of the fleet where everyone gets to see it done, and done
smoothly.  Head sails changes are done regularly but changing a
spinnaker under sail could only be done smoothly if you had practiced
it.  We had some good races and we had some bad races. And we spent time
practicing.    We practiced to the point where, for example, where I
could put my hand on a halyard and the pit man knew exactly what halyard
and what to do with it without me shouting me back a command.

After a race, the beers were open for the passage home.  After the boat
was docked. sails packed, etc. the first half hour was spent talking
about the racewhat did we do wrong, what went right. After that we
normally got juvenile.

In 1995, I wanted something different from racingbought a Kirby 25
that we raced against as our main boat for boat competitor, the J24
fleet with 4 of the 5 original amigosme and 3 of the amigos left my
friend's C 34R to race the K25...racing is totally different when
you are on the helm and not on the foredeck when you get to a mark and
there are 15 other boats there compared to normal handicap racing where
twenty minutes after the start the fleet spreads out.

No matter how you choose to race, it helps a lot if the crew can size up
the competition, decide where they expect to place in their respective
fleetbottom 3rd, middle 3rd, or top 3rd.  If you can get the crew to
talk about this and agree, saves a lot of different expectations among crew.

Racing is 50% boat, 50% crew and 50% luck on any given day.  I have had
the good fortune to have benefited from all three, and in a few races,
all three!

Stus-List Shower drain won't and "loss" of toilet bowl water fill

2019-12-18 Thread detroito91 via CnC-List
My shower drain won't pump the water out. I have removed and cleaned the rule
pump. Nothing there.  The switch will start the pump running. No change in
water level. At approximately the same time,  the water does not come into the
toilet bowl.  Turn the knob to fill the bowl, and pump handle. Nothing comes
in. Empty bowl. I hear water "noise" for a few seconds when I finish pumping.
It will remove water to holding tank if I manually add water. All thru hulls

dry-land rendezvous at a central location.  That way, people from way down

even get some non-C

2. Because we all boat here year-round (suck it, northerners!) marina space for
more than a handful of boats seems to be a stretch. Then again, see #1 above.

at my club in Venice), Tampa, Miami, Fort Lauderdale, or other such place that
could be an easy drive or flight.I welcome everyone’s (even David Risch’s)

what kinds of things would you like the group to do (You know, besides eat and

Venice - Sarasota - Tampa - Clearwater area, I’m sure we could get the

Baltimore is a good location.  The Admiral and I spent a couple nights at the

I just wish there were enough listers on the northern Gulf Coast for a

Hi Jim,
You plan to sail correct? Could I meet you in Bellhaven NC and tag along on
Halcyon. I have been tearing up the Neuse (one if the few boats out there
often) and have done Washington, Ocracoke and Beaufort but never North of that.
I would love to check
out Chesapeake in the fall! But thats a bit of a haul for this rookie.
Just a thought ...
or I schedule little work at my Corp. Office  in Beltsville MD and they can
pick up travel tab :)  sshh!

that would be a big plus as the rendezvous seems to be growing and rain can
happen. Maybe we should look at a pot luck night so everyone could participate
with something, the food was awesome again and well received. The gumbo, taco
meatloaf and crab macaroni
among other things were delicious. Gary was great in St Michaels for his local
knowledge and the distillery tour was a big hit. Anyone within driving distance
should consider it too. For Susanne and I, the people, boats and location make
it worth a 10-12 hour
drive. Thanks again to all who attended. Keep up the good work!

I don’t know to emphatically say Thank You to everyone who contributed to
our fund raising.  The response has been overwhelming and it is greatly
appreciated.

I did not send out individual thank you notes.  I have spent a
considerable amount of time in the hospital with Gladys and will probably do so
for a while.  She was involved in a freak accident and with everything
involved with her recovery and rehab, she might get back home next April.
But we just take everything day by day.

Again – a huge THANK YOU
everyone who has made it possible to keep this list going for another year at
least.

Hi Guys,
Sorry for this last minute commit. I live in New Jersey and keep my boat in
idyllic Magothy River but presently on the hard in Pasadena, Md at Oak Harbor
near Baltimore. I'm redoing my decks so not sure if I will bring the boat, but
that's what I'm working
toward. Anyway, I just wrote the rendezvous onto my calendar and suggest any
future correspondence include Oct 19th in the subject line as it was hard to
find the date. My boat has no dodger or bimini for rainy day gatherings, but
Resolute would like to provide
iced coolers of local craft beer at any events planned. Our way of supporting
the event.

Gary, I have previously envisioned pavilions, music, sponsors, vendors,

boaters.  No one wants to over-commit as people still enjoy their own private
space and adventures.

- Group trips to local restaurants are well received.

- There are a few distilleries that I'm thinking about setting up for a tour.

- I figure the museum is going to be a nice visit.

- For meals people do pretty well with pot luck and we all move between
different host boats.  Last year was kinda rainy so Bob Boyer's full enclosure
and Brian Fry's full bimini/dodger both came in handy.

I got word from Higgins they should be able to accommodate ~6 boats.  We had 5
official boats in the reserved slips at Annapolis last year plus S/V Rainy Days
who stayed separate.
When I attended the 2017 N.E. Rendezvous there were 5 boats with a late
breaking cancelation.  So 6 feels good as an unofficial count.  I need to move
fast to make the reservation.  As I was warned St. Mike's does lots of
festivals and that weekend turns out
to be one of their biggest.

As Gary stated before, Higgins is not a "Marina" it is a boat yard.  The cost
is very reasonable but amenities like pool and restaurant are not available the
bathrooms are sparse.
My favorite thing about Higgins is the location.  It is perfectly located in
the center of town.  Such an easy walk everywhere.

This is the make or break day on whether we keep the venue at St. Michael's or
change to a different venue.

PLEASE RSVP TODAY SO THAT I CAN MAKE THE FINAL DECISION AND DOCKAGE RESERVATION!

All the best,

Water Tank Woes [again] - Welding Question

My water tank is leaking again. I want to attempt a weld to repair it.

It is a Kracor polypropylene tank, but the labeling details have faded over
time, and no longer legible.  I don’t know what kind of polypropylene was used
to construct the tank.

So, the question is, do I use hi-density OR
lo-density polypropylene?  Or, does it matter?

Thanks!

I would rather anchor out than go to MRYC. I know a lot of us will be wanting
to walk around the town.
I might suggest seeing about an “event” at CBMM. Those who are anchored out
could still use the showers maybe??? We can anyway from being members.

As my boat is berthed next to Higgins (and winters there), I asked. Busy. The
marinas around here are busy until the end of October. We only have a few slips
available – Higgins
has about 20 but a lot of repeat visitors, St. Michaels  Marina has more but
is busy most weekends, you may be better at CBMM (I am involved there and can
ask) and Harbor Inn and Marina is limited and expensive.

I asked at Higgins (by the way they are new owners and great folks, but are
keeping full) so I have to wonder how many attendees would be willing to anchor
out – we can probably
find a place for a party – my lawn is too small – the shuttle service is
rather good, so anchoring is not a problem – I would recommend Fogg Cove by the
Museum (and Perry Cabin megabucks resort – you have to endure the Hinckley tour
boat and the fleet of Alerions
of various lengths). About 10 feet and good holding.

Would you consider Miles River Yacht Club – again limited slips (bunch of owner
boats) but the ‘creek’ has good space and I think the shuttle would be OK to
get into town?

Sorry for no more local knowledge, but it has been a busy spring/summer, and we
don’t have a lot of room, but a great place to live and sail.

I don’t think we have a final location. The Maritime Museum is fun. The Harbor
Inn on the other side is luxurious. Higgins is a boatyard – not fancy – but nice
people. The St Michaels Harbor Marina (sp??) is loud and the owners don’t
care. Kind of the party marina over there.

You could say it’s around the corner, but only if you are talking on a
country-wide scale. This summer, the Enterprise will be moving to a slip at the
Venice Yacht Club in Venice, FL — In fact, fellow lister Captain Rick Brass is
working up a
full plan and quote to bring her down.

My business and residence will also be moving to southern Sarasota. You could
say it has been an eventful winter around here.

So, the Enterprise will travel over 1,300 miles to continue the voyages she has
begun, seeking out strange new marinas and southern Florida civilizations,
boldly going where no man, or no one, has gone before.

Aside from Bruce’s C 37+ and a few others I know about, there’s not a whole
lot of C action in the Gulf area, but maybe others will one day follow us to
also live where others vacation. There is something VERY satisfying in knowing
that last
October was the last time I’ll winterize my engine and that I won’t really
need to haul the boat again for at least a few years, then only to slap some
new paint on the bottom and then go back sailing again.

I’d love to get a Rendezvous together for late June or something like that in
the LI Sound area — stay tuned for that.

All the best,

Re: Stus-List Not shifting fwd to reverse Have you tried disconnecting the
cable at the gearbox and shifting into gear using only your hands?  Generally
gearboxes (other than mechanical boxes on A4s or Paragon boxes) will snick in
and out of gear with very little effort.  If the cable is antique(as in the
original cable for the boat) go ahead and buy a new one, same length as the old
one before it breaks or the gear shift on the pedestal breaks.  Since the
cables use a solid rod inside the cable housing, wear will occur wherever the
cable makes a bend.  It is undetectable to the eye and it will make the gearbox
increasingly harder to put in gear.  If the boat won’t engage in either forward
or reverse, I’ll put my money on the cable or the cable holder inside the
pedestal shifter as the offending part.My Landfall 35 has a shift mechanism at
the pedestal that Edson stopped making in the 80’s with no replacement parts.

Properly torquing the keel bolts eliminates the side to side motion (at least
it did on my 38) and the nuts stay tight. The glass is primarily cosmetic.

My 38 had the keel dropped and rebedded in 2004 after a hard grounding. The
insurance company felt the smile was a result of that. I also shortened the
keel and added a torpedo bulb at that time. I don't really know what the yard
did about torquing the nuts properly.

There was a bit of smile during a refit in 2009, so I retorqued the bolts
myself and did the cosmetic repair on the smile.

During the last haul and bottom paint (and having the boat painted) in 2017,
there was no smile evident.

So are you saying there was a void in the keel stub on the hull? Sounds like

slight movement which may be gradually loosening the keel nuts?

When the smile first appeared on my boat, the keel bolts were so loose that I
could move the keel from side to side. In order to drop the keel, we had to
remove the mast (The forward keel bolt is under the mast). Once we dropped the
keel, we hosed out
the bolt holes. There was a terrible smell coming from the forward hole. There
was a void there that had to be filled. The yard ground the stub and the top of
the keel, and epoxied the two of them together. It took about a gallon of epoxy
to fill the void.
Then a couple of layers of fiberglass were glassed over the smile, and it has
never appeared again. Also, I haven't had to re-tighten the keel bolts.

The C smile is usually a non-issue.  It is nearly always resolved by torquing
the keel bolts and cosmetically repairing the hull/keel crack.  See:

That's a typical C smile.  It was fixed by torquing the bolts, digging out
some crumbly stuff at the crack and epoxying a couple overlapping layers of
glass over the crack.  The repair shown was done in 1999.  It has not
reappeared.  Here's the same
 boat in 2018.

Torquing the bolts is much easier than finding the tools to do it.  Most use a
torque multiplier.  You may be able to rent what you need.

The bolts must be individually backed off and then torqued.  Doesn't much
matter if the boat is in or out of the water.

The biggest issue with older C's is if the washers/plates under the keel
bolts have not been replaced with stainless plates.  If they are plain steel,
they should be replaced with stainless.

For most older C's the smile is a greatly overblown issue.

Ok, so perhaps a better question to ask - what is the recommended maintenance
(annual re-torque? I see a torque spec listed on the CNCphotoalbum page but no

to fix
it? This boat will be pushing our budget a bit, so I want to ensure we're not
going to incur a bunch of costs right away.

I just received the following update from Wal Bryant on Stella Blue down in

Hi Fred. It's over. The mountains did the job and we really didn't see much
wind. I've seen much worse in a spontaneous squall. (I mean weather, not
drunken women.) I was really worried about surge and swell. But I've seen
bigger waves. I wouldn't call it a "non-event" but I probably could have left
the boat as it was and everything would have been fine. But for some reason I
think if I hadn't prepared then the serious sh_t would have happened.
So all is well in Margaritaville…   

Here’s a post from Wal Bryant on Stella Blue (Landfall 38) in Mexico (posted
with his permission); he’s in the more direct path of Willa right now:
And so it begins. Willa to the North, Vicente to the south. And me in the
middle. (I think that's a classic quote from Clint Eastwood's 'For a Fistful of
Dollars.') The worry is Willa. It's going to hit to the North, and with
anticlockwise rotation the wind and swell is going to come straight from the
Southwest. The Bay is wide open from that direction, and yesterday Mike Michael
Eric Danielson at PV Sailing said the swell forecast was for 20 foot swells.
I've sailed my boat through 20 foot seas, and used the EFF word a few times.
Having them hit shallow water and slam into the breakwater will be something to
watch. I think it's entirely possible that waves will wash over the breakwater
into the marina. The breakwater itself is relatively new, and hasn't filled in
with sand and sediment. When there is surge outside, boats inside still move
around. A lot.So I spent today adding dock lines, and setting up spare dock
lines, and taping around hatches that have leaky gaskets, and making an
inventory of rope. I have more rope on this boat than is reasonable. People
laugh at me. But once, a couple of years ago, a barge broke loose and I had 400
feet of rope. It came in handy. As soon as I was done getting my lines and my
backup lines ready, the rain started. The hurricane is still two days off. This
is just the outer fringe.Walking around this morning, I seemed to be the only
one preparing. I saw someone doing brightwork (varnishing teak.) I mentioned
the situation to someone else, and she said "We talked to Long-Timers and they
said it's no big deal." Well, I've been in Pacific Mexico for nine years, and
this is only the second time I've set up to get hit by sh_t. And it's the first
time I've pulled a couple of lines over to the pilings two feet above the
spring tide high water mark. I've seen 50 with gusts to 70, and that was at
anchor where the boat was pointed into the wind. I'm really not worried about
wind, I'm worried about wind swell.I think tomorrow a bunch of people will be
running around in the rain doing what I did this morning. I'll be inside the
boat making sure my bilge pumps are clear and the through hulls are closed and
the last minute details are done. Then I'll adjust the lines to move the boat
boat away from the dock, put on my Helly Hansen jacket and hope that the people
who said "It's nothing" were right and I was totally wrong. I really hope that
all I've done is give my spare dock lines a good rinse.
Let’s wish him luck.

The rendezvous is this weekend.  Bunch of folks have responded they are
attending.
The agenda remains flexible.  Apparently the only fixed activity is a pot luck
on the docks Friday night.
The Admiral and I are looking forward to meeting a bunch of fellow C owners.
We'll be there Saturday afternoon.

without a scratch--even the 9+ foot storm surge was not enough to float her off

One way or another (Lady Luck included!) she has survived every hurricane that
NC has suffered since Fran and Bertha in 1996 through Florence--I have lost

type of bottom did the anchor eventually catch on? Were there other boats

BTW, 'The Edge' survived Florence just fine. She drug about half a

Water entered though the exhaust and into the M35 cylinders. Glad I
left a sail inside so I could sail back to the slip. Pulled the glow

This one is not going to be good. The eye is projected to come inland 10
miles south of our house (living on an island is great 11 months out of
the year). We boarded up today and I told the wife if there is anything
you want to see again, pack it up. We're heading up to Washington NC
tomorrow to anchor the boat out. We're setting the 35lb CQR with 150'
chain and snubber and a 50 lb danforth in the Pamlico River in 12 feet
of water.

Most NC storms do a late track to the north which would impact the boat
as much as the house. Hopefully, this will stay the course and spare the
boat (priorities!).

I discovered that my  port side water tank has a 4” long hairline fracture in

The domestic fresh water tank (I assume original) on my 1981 C 34 has two
ports in the top with screw in covers with 3.5" diameter threads.  The covers
have degraded to the point that they no longer thread in (the plastic has
shrunk - probably due to a chemical used by the previous owner or perhaps just
time and heat.  The outer threads seem to be in good shape but I have been
unable to find a replacement port cover of the same size.  Any suggestions on
there on where to find these covers so I don't need to cut the whole thing out
and install new plate assemblies?

has an angle to accommodate the hull bottom shape.  Thanks much for the advice.

I would NOT recommend stainless steel bolts.  As I recall, stainless has less

industry standard for demanding applications such as automotive suspensions.  I
used nickel anti-seize on the bolts and keep the coupler painted and corrosion

I sounds like having the bolts loosen is the root cause.
When I got my straight drive the coupler was held by carbon steel bolts with
lock washers and nuts.  They never came loose.
When I added a vibration dampener the new bolts came with nylock nuts.  They
advised torqing them to the correct spec.  I've never had them come loose
either.
Lock nuts, lock washers, locktite, and/or the proper torque are the only
suggestion I can provide based on your description.

Coupling bolts shearing

Jim,

I have a 79 38LF, serial number 001.  I have had a similar
problem.
There were a combination of things that caused it.
First, the engine was never bedded in the boat properly.  I had to cut
the engine mounts and rebuild them so the engine could be aligned with the prop
shaft.
Second, I had the Paragon SAOV transmission and V-drive rebuilt.  Most
of the internal components of both units were replaced.  The prior owner
installed a used SAOD and connected the v-drive to it. (Making it a SAOV)
But, most important, have you replaced the vibration damper connected to
the output shaft of the engine?  It looks like a clutch plate but without
the clutch material.  It is between the engine and the transmission.
Mine looked good but upon a thorough inspection it was found to be
trash!
My problem turned out to be a combination of the above, several “boat
yards” aligned the prop with the v-drive but in actuality, there was a
significant amount of difference between the two causing the bolts on the
coupling to loosen.
There was enough play in the v-drive output for it to look good.

I would suspect that your vibration damper is not doing it’s job.

You have a keyway in the shaft and transmission coupling?

When you say coupling bolts ... the bolts mounting the transmission to the bell

Anyone check the transmission?

Ahh,  reminds me of our annual launch and run fro. Milwaukee to Chicago in the
spring.  No matter how well prepared I thought I was, some last minute thing
would creep into the picture.
It's that time of year that always portends the warm summer sailing - just the
anticipation felt so good...

Stus-List Season Splash

We launched this morning for the season.  Launch
slot was at 8 am with a 1:45 drive to the boat.  Had to VC-17 the
cradle pad areas before splashing.  Rained on us from the house
until about 20 minutes from boat.  Then the rain held off until we
were at the dock and tied up.  Then the rain came in buckets.  Did
I mention that it was 39 degrees F with the rain?

Boat is floating.  New PYI Packless shaft seal, re-installed the
rebuilt water heater and cleaned up the cabin before we finally
headed back home, cold and wet.  When we go back, we will install
the Cajun Ropes line set, start on the Autopilot installation, and
charge the water system.  The admiral is ready to start on the
teak taffrail, handrails and companionway.  Not to mention bending
on the sails and planning the lazy jack design.
