As questions regarding Chico Basin Ranch access are beginning to roll in,
I'd like to clarify the new regulations per Aiken Audubon's birding lease
with the CO State Land Board:
- · The last day to visit Chico under the current policy is Feb 29
th. The ranch will

The Phillips family has requested that birders *not* visit the ranch
tomorrow (Sunday).
The roads are in bad shape due to the precipitation (vehicles are mostly
going sideways) , and they 'd like to keep them from getting worse.
It's also begun snowing again out there.

This Thursday, Nov 12th, the State Land Board (SLB)will be voting on what
"uses" will be allowed at Chico Basin Ranch when the lease expires in 2024.
The SLB is recommending that birding and/or bird-banding be handled via a
"layered lease" that Aiken Audubon or a similar organization

Bill Maynard and I were able to see over 100 species of birds on the Ranch
today. I ended up with 99 species on the Pueblo County side of the

Bill (Mr. Chico) Maynard and I were are Chico Basin Ranch this morning. On the
Pueblo side, at the Headquarter Willows, there was a YELLOW-THROATED WARBLER.
A female Blackpoll Warbler was at Rose Pond. One Northern Waterthrush was
singing at the Headquarters and another one at Rose Pond.
Hi all,
Today's Arkansas Valley Audubon birding trip to Chico Basin Ranch (fee area)
was pretty amazing.
There were Swainson's and Hermit Thrushes, and Gray Catbirds everywhere, like
50-100 of each perhaps!
110 species of birds were seen/heard by my group today at Chico Basin Ranch!

area), this morning. Highlights were two FIELD SPARROWS, one at the
Headquarters and one photographed at Rose Pond. We also, saw a Townsend's

The best day of the spring so far at Chico Basin Ranch (fee area) for warblers.
I saw 15 species of warblers today (missed Chat, which I saw last time I was
there). A few other birders were also present, and saw most of these birds.

Hi all,

group's (Lisa Edwards, Kara Lewantowicz, and Maggie Boswell) highlights.
14 species of warblers.
Tennessee Warbler - 2 singing males at the Headquarters, Pueblo County and 1
singing male at the banding
Cobirders :
Very quiet at the banding station today , no banders present , just a
single Hermit Thrush , Ruby-crowned Kinglet , and Yellow-rumped Warbler.
At Rose Pond however there was an immature Harris's Sparrow associating
with White-crown's in the very short willows along the
COBirders,
I went to Chico Basin Ranch (fee) today to look for signs of spring
migration. There are signs that there has been very little winter
moisture on the Chico.
I saw this drought index a couple weeks ago and thought birders might be
interested in the recent drought severity index
