Did anyone see it at Manitou Lake today? I'd like to go up there on Friday.
Thank you.

The common black hawk is still present at lake Manitou outside of Woodland
Park as of 5:30 pm today (Thursday). I refound it again on the top of the
beaver dam just downstream from the spillway where it had been seen often
before. I watched it eat a crayfish in the way everyone has been
John Bruder reported it was still present this morning.

It was still there, 50 meters below the dam spillway at 12:15 pm today,
Tuesday, September 15. Initially perched on a Ponderosa Pine next to the
stream, then went hunting.

Has anyone been to Manitou Lake today? This is my first free afternoon to
go down and look for the black hawk. I'm hopeful it's still there but any
negative reports could help save me from a nice long Tuesday afternoon
drive :)

It indeed was a nice day for my wife and I to see a new State bird. When we
got there about 10:45, it was sitting on a beaver dam feeding on what appeared
to be a few remains of snake.
There were a number of other bird species of interest to us including lots of

The bird continues at the same location. It was at the spillway when I arrived,
flushed about 20 minutes later and flew to the north east corner of Manitou
lake for about five minutes, and then flew back to the creek a bit down stream
of the spillway where it currently is now.

An awesome , quick response from Kevin Ash (finder of the Common Black-Hawk)
and Cinnamon Bergeron has resulted in photos from Cinnamon showing the bird
with a crayfish on the dam, and reference to photos in the eBird checklists of
Alan Ketcham and Diane Roberts showing the hawk with crayfish.

I apologize for not scrutinizing Andrea Robinsong's photo more closely
before announcing on CoBirds that there had been a Common Black-Hawk in
Delta County on Aug 22. The bird in the photo was a Golden Eagle. This is
not the first mistake I have made in my life!
Good Birding!

At about 12:45 this afternoon, a Common Black-Hawk was soaring of the town
of Hotchkiss! I watched it soar for about 15 minutes before losing it.
Checking eBird showed that they do show up in March in AZ. When I first saw
it I thought it seemed way too early for a vagrant to be showing up in
Possible Common Black Hawk near the Gunnison Sage Grouse Lek today.
I was passing County Road 887 and Hyw 50 (19miles east of Gunnison) when I
spotted a very dark raptor sitting on a fence post just off the highway. As
I turned around and pulled onto the dirt road, the bird took off. It was an
About one hours ago I saw a Common Black-Hawk soaring over Hotchkiss (Delta
County). This is almost exactly one year from the date (June 12th last
year) I saw this species souring in about the same location in 2009. I also
saw one perched near where I was today on July 29th, 2009. Could this
Hi all,
Gene Rutherford and others saw the Common Black-Hawk at the Fountain Creek
Regional Park Nature Center in the cottonwood trees this morning before 645am,
hopefully it will stick around for a while today.

The Common Black-Hawk was still at Fountain Creek Nature Center this morning.
When I arrived at 6:25am, it was sitting in a tree near the NE corner of the
parking area, in a fairly obscured location. Around 7:00am, a pair of
dive-bombing American Robins became too much to bear, and the hawk

To post to this group,
COBirders,
I just received a phone call from Bob Gooycolea who was at Fountain Creek
Nature Center between 6:45 and 7:15 P.M. He told me the hawk was perched
in a tree directly above the feeders at the nature center during those
times. I agree with Brandon that this bird might be chaseable
This morning while searching for cuckoos near Hotchkiss I saw a Common
Black-Hawk perched on a fencepost only about half a mile southwest of town.
I was able to study the bird for a minute or so before it flew off. It has
been a month and a half since I saw the Black-Hawk soaring over Hotchkiss.
While driving through Hotchkiss this morning about 10:20 I spotted a dark
hawk with very broad wings circling above town. I pulled over quickly and
grabbed my binoculars and confirmed my suspicion; it was an adult Common
Black-Hawk! The very broad wings, short tail, all black plumage, and very
