[cobirds] Chatfield, Robert A. Easton, & Ken Caryl Valley area 5/5

2017-05-05 Thread David Suddjian
Pre-dawn stops produced 4 *Common Poorwills* at Cathy Johnson Trail near
Deer Creek Road and South Valley Park, and 1 *poorwill *near Mann Reservoir
in South Valley Park. The wetland area near the south end of the park
had 6 *Wilson's
Snipe* winnowing and chipping (very cool) and 1 *Virginia Rail*.

With daylight up, Chatfield SP yielded a nice variety of things, although
numbers of most migrants remain low. A highlight was provided by 2 *Cattle
Egrets* that came south over the dam and landed at the Swim Beach. when I
went there to look for them, a dog was active on the beach and they had
apparently departed but it seems like they may have stayed at the lake.
First of Season landbird migrants for me were *American Redstart*,
*Yellow-breasted
Chat* (2), *Grasshopper Sparrow* and *Bullock's Oriole*. Two *Eastern
Phoebes* were on territory near Kingfisher Bridge, and another was calling
along Plum Creek just downstream of the bridge near the picnic area.

Counts of some of the other landbird migrants were *Least Flycatcher*
(3), *Dusky
Flycatcher* (1), *Western Kingbird* (1), *Loggerhead Shrike* (1), *Blue-gray
Gnatcatcher* (2), *Swainson's Thrush* (1), *Gray Catbird* (1), *Orange-crowned
Warbler* (5), *Virginia's Warbler* (1), *Yellow-rumped Warbler* (87), *Yellow
Warbler* (1), *Western Tanager* (1), *Chipping Sparrow* (45), *Clay-colored
Sparrow* (1), *Brewer's Sparrow* (1), *Lark Sparrow* (2), *Vesper Sparrow*
(15), and *Green-tailed Towhee* (2).

There were *White-faced Ibis* (9), *Broad-winged Hawk*, *Osprey*, *Peregrine
Falcon*, and *Bald Eagle*. Shorebirds included *Killdeer* (4), *Am. Avocet*
(3), *Marbled Godwit*, *Willet* (6), *Spotted Sandpiper* (9), *Solitary
Sandpiper*, *Western Sandpiper*, *Least Sandpiper* (2), and *Wilson's
Phalarope* (2).

Counts of ducks were *Wood Duck* (3), *Gadwall* (8), *Mallard *(74),
*Blue-winged
Teal* (4), *Cinnamon Teal* (2), *Northern Shoveler* (11), *Green-winged
Teal *(1), *Bufflehead* (1), *Ruddy Duck *(13) and *Common Merganser* (25).

Robert A. Easton Park had even fewer ducks than the other day; Lesser scaup
were gone, but 31 *Bufflehead *lingered on. Also 2 *Wilson's
Phalaropes*, 1 *Green-tailed
Towhee*, and 1 *Burrowing Owl *that was up above ground.

At Massey Draw near my home (no public access) I had my FOS *Wilson's
Warbler* and a continuing *Harris's Sparrow*.

[cobirds] Boulder County Phalaropes and a fleeting Whimbrel

2017-05-05 Thread Peter Burke
Cobirders,
This evening there were 12-14 Wilson's Phalaropes at Sombrero Marsh feeding
actively along with a single White-faced Ibis. A lone male Great-tailed
Grackle was singing in earnest and Yellow-headed Blackbirds have arrived.

I visited Cottonwood Marsh, which is evaporating at a worrying pace, and
found a Snowy Egret and a single Whimbrel. Unfortunately the Whimbrel did
not stay, flying noisily north. Maybe it will spend the evening at Lagerman
or MacIntosh?

That's about it. With luck the high pressure will bring new birds in rather
than flushing out the few we have around here...

Good birding,

[cobirds] Boyd lake--shorebirds

2017-05-05 Thread Susan Rosine
When you say north, do you mean within Boyd Lake State Park? The northernmost
parking lot? Or somewhere else? I drove up there today, and was disappointed.
One Spotted Sandpiper, one Willet, some Killdeers. And the Sandpiper and Willet
were not at the mudflats located at the North parking lot!
So, what did I do wrong?

Observation start time: 09:00:00
Observation end time: 15:00:00
Total observation time: 6 hours

Official Counter:Debbie James

Observers:

Visitors:
Various visitors stopped to chat. One woman knew a little about birds and
mentioned all that she had seen on her hike. She was there to see the
Kestrel migrate.

Weather:
A very, very warm day on the Ridge. Winds were light, and sky was "dead"
blue as Joyce calls it. Haziness started moving in about 2:00 MDT--filled
the Denver Basin and then ran up the valleys.

Raptor Observations:
Arrived at lot, looked across to Sub-Peak and saw 4 raptors swirling
high--so high I couldn't I.D. Then about two hours later 6 raptors were in
a kettle--4 T.V.'s and two Red Tail Hawks. These were all local birds.
Also counted 1 local Cooper's Hawk and 1 Peregrine Falcon flying through
Rooney alley. A slow, end-of-season day for migrators. Just a Red Tail
and Kestrel, both flew directly over the Ridge, very low.

Non-raptor Observations:
At the lot a Western Kingbird flew down, grabbed a grasshopper, flew up to
the lot sign, whacked it twice hard on the metal, then swallowed it in two
gulps. On walk up to station, saw one cottontail rabbit and 4 Mule Deer--3
in velvet. Other birds: 1 American Robin; 2 Northern Flicker, 3
Black-billed Magpie; 2 Spotted-winged Towhee; 4 Woodhouse's Scrub Jay; 2
Violet Green Swallows; 1 hummingbird species; 7 American Crow; and 1
Blue-gray Gnatcatcher busy most of the day collecting nesting material.
All bird activity dropped off at about 1:30 MDT, and remained quiet thru
the end of the watch.

Predictions:
Weather report has it even warmer tomorrow than it was today.

the best place in the world to see migrating Ferruginous Hawks. Dinosaur
Ridge may be the best place in the country to see the rare dark morph of
the Broad-winged Hawk (a few are seen each spring). Hawkwatchers who linger
long enough may see resident Golden Eagles, Red-tailed Hawks and Prairie
Falcons, in addition to migrating Swainson's, Cooper's and Sharp-shinned
Hawks, American Kestrels and Turkey Vultures. Peregrine Falcons and
Ferruginous Hawks are uncommon; Northern Goshawk is rare but regular.
Non-raptor species include Rock Wren, and sometimes Bushtit, Western
Bluebird, Sandhill Crane, White-throated Swift, American White Pelican or
Dusky Grouse. Birders are always welcome.
The hawkwatch is generally staffed by volunteers from Bird Conservancy of

cool birds included Western Tanager, Thrush spp, Blue-gray Gnatcatcher, and

[cobirds] Black-throated Blue Warbler - Flagler State Wildlife Area 5/5/17

2017-05-05 Thread Austin Hess
I found an adult male Black-throated Blue Warbler on the east side of Flagler
State Wildlife Area in Kit Karson County this morning at about 10:30. It was
foraging high in a cottonwood grove. Photos were obtained. Also present were
two Ladder-backed Woodpeckers which was surprising given the location.

I also found a White-throated Sparrow at Last Chance Rest Area in Washington
County early this morning. Was with a Sparrow flock where all the old abandoned
buildings are.
