Ani still here. Just saw him again at 6:40. A grroup of about 10 people
are on him still with occasional glimpses in a large willow patch. Same
locations as before; downstream from the bridge in front of the RK building.

[cobirds] Bird Conservancy Banding Report - Chico Basin Ranch, 9/9/19

2019-09-09 Thread Robert Snowden
As the second week of the fall season gets underway at Chico, we had our
busiest day of the season so far, but still relatively modest by our
standards. It was also the coolest (and dampest) start to the morning yet,
and like last week, we caught more birds as the temperatures rose. The
majority of captures came in the last couple hours of the day.

For the first time, Wilson's Warblers were not the most abundant species at
our banding station. Instead, it was a busier day for Orange-crowned
Warblers and Lincoln's Sparrows. We also had a female 'Northern' oriole
that made for an interesting identification challenge. Overall, we banded
32 birds and had 1 recapture, of 11 total species:

Hammond's Flycatcher 1 (FOS)
Wilson's Warbler 4
Western Wood-Pewee 1
Cordilleran/Pacific-slope ("Western") Flycatcher 1
MacGillivray's Warbler 1
Orange-crowned Warbler 12 (11 new, 1 recapture from last week)
Lincoln's Sparrow 8
Swainson's Thrush 1
Bullock's/Baltimore Oriole 1 (possible hybrid)
Northern Mockingbird 1
Gray Catbird 1

We are open 6 days a week, closed on Sundays. We'll be opening nets
tomorrow at 6:30 AM and closing them at 11:30 AM, weather permitting; for
the remainder of the week we'll be operating from 6:40 - 11:40 AM. Visitors
are welcome!

[cobirds] Sabine's Gull, Boulder Reservoir, Boulder Cty.

2019-09-09 Thread Peter Burke
COBirders,
A juvenile Sabine's Gull was viewable from the
NW corner of Boulder Res. this morning. It was making short forays out over
the water, sometimes landing to feed on the surface, but then quickly
returned to the mudflats where the Ring-billed Gulls were resting.

A pair of Western Sandpipers were at Lagerman Res. on the edge of the water
along the entrance road - keep your eyes open for a small Snapping Turtle
that was on the road this morning.

[cobirds] Bird Conservancy Banding Report - Barr Lake Station, 9/8/19

2019-09-09 Thread Meredith McBurney
Sunday was a relatively unbusy but quite interesting day. Had a Rock Wren
and House Wren in hand at the same time for nice comparison photos. Then
puzzled for awhile to identify a hatch year Savannah Sparrow (only the
second ever caught here, the other being in 1991!). Ended the day with the
FOS Yellow-rumped Warbler. Here's the full breakdown of the 36 new birds:

Western Wood-pewee 1
Black-capped Chickadee 1
White-breasted Nuthatch 1
Rock Wren 1
House Wren 2
Gray Catbird 2
Yellow-rumped Warbler, Audubon's 1
Common Yellowthroat 1
Wilson's Warbler 24
Savannah Sparrow 1
Song Sparrow 1

We are open 6 days per week, Tuesday-Sunday, weather permitting, through
October 13. We are opening nets at 6:40 and should have birds back at the
station by 7:20. We will close nets most days at 11:40, although we will
likely close earlier some days as long as this heat continues. School
groups arrive most weekdays at about 9:30, but this Tuesday the ornithology
class from UNC will be at the station from 8:15 until 11. The best time to
visit (fewest people, most birds) is before 9:30 weekdays and Sundays.

Come visit!

2019-09-09 Thread Karen Drozda
As of 1130 the Ani was still quite visible. Follow the gravel trail
parallel to the white building with red stripe "RK". Along the chain link
fence, there is a lone cottonwood tree about 100 yds down the trail.
Looking into Sand Creek, there is a small cottonwood in Sand Creek. Look
into the willows at the base of the cottonwood. The bird was calling
earlier and preening. It seems to be settled in that spot for the heat of
the day. Many observers this a.m.

Re: [cobirds] Re: Ani still here

2019-09-09 Thread Eric DeFonso
Although I didn't see as much of the bird's behavior yesterday afternoon as
I'd have liked (due to inclement weather), I didn't see anything that was
inconsistent with general wild ani behavior that I've encountered in my
travels in tropical locales.

To illustrate the sociality of anis (genus Crotophaga), GBAN is one of the
few bird species in the world that are communal nesters, meaning that
sometimes multiple females will share a single joint nest with as many as
20 eggs contained therein. Also, the Groove-billeds I've seen in Costa Rica
would hang out around hotels, and afforded several photo opportunities.
I've photographed Smooth-billeds in a few tropical locales along roadsides
too, in Puerto Rico, Ecuador, and Brazil.

Over the several months I spent in southeastern Brazil I also became fairly
familiar with its congener the Greater Ani (Crotophaga major). Greater Ani
is also highly social, and although not necessarily fearless of humans nor
is it terribly shy, and Greater Ani sometimes even engages in lengthy group
chorus episodes where 3-6 individuals in a group will make a continuous
gurgling cackle that can go on uninterrupted for several minutes. I
actually got to see this a couple times, and it was quite a treat.

The point being, this bird's casual behavior around people doesn't seem to
me to be an argument for prior captivity. It seemed like a typical ani to
me. And I've never even heard of anis as being desired cage birds.

comfortable so close to humans from those that have observed this species
in Texas and Central/South America. Is that type of cooperation typical for
this species in the "wild?"

[cobirds] Ani still here

2019-09-09 Thread Alison Kondler
Got great views of the Ani just now. Could this be an escaped bird? It flew up
to many of us as if waiting for a hand out. At one point five of us were about
eight feet away from it for about 6 minutes or so.

[cobirds] Colorado Rare Bird Alert for Monday, September 9, 2019

2019-09-09 Thread Joe Roller
Date: Monday, September 9, 2019

E-mail: RBA AT cobirds.org

Compiler: Joe Roller. jroller9ATgmail.com

Phone: 303 204-0828

Birders have been helpful by reporting updates to COBirds. Thanks!

CAPITAL LETTERS denote very rare species, as listed by the Colorado Bird
Records Committee at the CFO website.

(*) indicates new information on a species.

For more information on birds seen today, go to cobirds.org and scroll to
the bottom for “Recent eBird Sightings”.

Rare, out-of-place and out-of-season species include:

*GROOVE-BILLED ANI* (*Denver)

RUBY-THROATED HUMMINGBIRD (Kiowa)

Long-billed Curlew (Jefferson)

Buff-breasted Sandpiper (*Washington)

LONG-TAILED JAEGER (Pueblo)

Yellow-bellied Sapsucker (Denver)

Ovenbird (Broomfield)

Tennessee Warbler (Kiowa, *Logan))

PRAIRIE WARBLER (*Jefferson)

BROOMFIELD COUNTY:

—On September 7 an Ovenbird was reported at Alexx & Michaels Pond in
Broomfield by David Ely & Matt Hofeditz. There is only one previous eBird
county record.

DENVER COUNTY:

—On September 8 a *GROOVE-BILLED ANI* was reported in the hotspot “Sand
Creek--Westerly Creek to Smith Rd” by Jason Bidgood, who spread the word
quickly, allowing myriad birders to hop to it and enjoy this mega-rarity,
the 5th state eBird record. It was seen from both sides of Sand Creek,
upstream of the intersection of Xanthia St and Smith Rd, near Central Park
Blvd. It has been confiding at times, perched in the open, but more often
skulks in the dense understory there. Updates to CObirds (yea or nay) would
be appreciated.

—On September 6 an (early) adult male Yellow-bellied Sapsucker was reported
at Berkeley Park by Charlie Chase. Present here last winter.

JEFFERSON COUNTY:

—On September 8 a PRAIRIE WARBLER was reported on the trail from the
Kingfisher Bridge parking lot toward the South Platte River delta by
Michael Lester.

—On September 6 a (juv) Long-billed Curlew graced the mudflats of the South
Platte River delta at Chatfield SP, found by Lorraine Lanning. The ID was
reviewed and confirmed. Habitat for shorebirds is good there now.

KIOWA COUNTY:

—On September 7 a RUBY-THROATED HUMMINGBIRD was seen in Eads by Steven
Mlodinow.

—On September 7 a Tennessee Warbler was reported at Neenoshe Reservoir by
Steven Mlodinow.

LOGAN COUNTY:

—On September 8 a Tennessee Warbler was seen at Pioneer Park in Sterling by
Will Anderson.

PUEBLO COUNTY:

—On September 4 a LONG-TAILED JAEGER was reported at Pueblo Reservoir (SE
corner flying west) by Brandon Percival.

WASHINGTON COUNTY:

—On September 8 a Buff-breasted Sandpiper was reported near the inlet canal
of Prewitt Reservoir; first reported September 7 by David Tonnesson.
