The Colorado Rare Bird Report is an informational service.

Because of statewide coronavirus “Stay at Home” and “Safer at Home” orders
(depending on where you live), the purpose of this report is to keep homebound
readers abreast of rare bird sightings across the state during spring
migration. It does NOT endorse or encourage illegal travel to see or "chase"
rare birds beyond your own permitted area.

We urge readers to respect state and local restrictions on non-critical travel
and limits on outdoor activities that include birding. Please do all you can to
ensure the safety of others and yourself while birding, including appropriate
PPE and distancing.

___

Birders have been helpful by reporting updates to COBirds. Thanks!

CAPITAL LETTERS denote very rare species, as listed by the Colorado Bird
Records Committee at the CFO website.

(*) indicates new information on a species.

For more information on birds seen today, go to
cobirds.org and scroll to the bottom for “Recent eBird
Sightings.”

___

Spring migration notes:

Passerine migration is in full swing, with many neotropical species arriving.
Any patch of habitat can produce birds, including your own backyard or the park
down the street. In the interest of shortening this report somewhat, many
exciting birds are not included here.

What’s in your yard or near your home? Let us know on COBirds.

2020-05-08 Thread Joe Kipper
Yes, Caleb, interesting thoughts. I listened closely to it, but it was singing
softly. Both species have songs that are so similar that I couldn't tell. If I
were able to hear it call, that would have been interesting, because each
species does have a distinctive call note. Unfortunately, it never called while
I was there. I did not think to record it either.

[cobirds] Unknown Raptor Arapahoe County

2020-05-08 Thread Julie Martinez
Good evening everyone!

I was on a lunch break yesterday afternoon near S. Buckley Rd. and E.
Alameda Ave., on the street to nowhere just northwest of that intersection
by the old trees.
I was watching a Red-tailed Hawk circling around with a Turkey Vulture when
I caught a raptor I am completely baffled by. It was soaring around lazily
with the Red-tailed Hawk and would occasionally perch, but out of range of
a camera.

The bird was not as bulky and chonky as the Red-tail, but I'd say size
range for a Swainson's. What's weird, the bird had very noticeable
white/light colored "patch" markings on the dorsal side of each wing, right
near the primary coverts (reminding me of a Common Nighthawk, but much
larger), compared to the sandy/buff color of the rest of the wing and body.
Dorsally, the tail was the same, light color with no discernible striping,
bars, or color.

I have not seen this kind of color/pattern in a raptor and want to ask if
this is something you guys are familiar with? I really wish I had a picture
because the coloring was bizarre to me. Any thoughts of similar sightings
would be great!

Hi all,
This evening I had a Northern Parula working a row of shrubs just south of

Yellow-rumpeds. Also in the area were good numbers of sparrows (eight
species total) and a Wilson's Snipe along Empire Road.

A friend of a friend sees nesting buteos (I presume) just west of Old Town,

a band at the end of their tails. I suspect Swainson's, but I wondered if any

Re: [cobirds] big age difference in owl nestlings?

2020-05-08 Thread Marjorie Joy
I’ve not had experience with that happening for owls in the 10 years I have
been monitoring raptor nests for CPW. However, I have seen something similar
with kestrels in a nest box behind my house in Pueblo West. About 6 years ago,
3 young kestrels fledged from the box, one every other day as usual, and 2
weeks later a 4th one popped out to join the other 3. Since we can’t see into
the box, there’s no way to know for sure that there was actually that much
difference in age, but the late one looked much less mature than her siblings,
with a few pinfeathers and a slightly shorter tail.

Cheers,

[cobirds] Golden-winged and Nashville, Tucker Gulch, Jeffco

2020-05-08 Thread Dave Cameron
We saw the Golden-winged at 2 different times, maybe an hour or so apart
(1-ish and 2:30ish). Very cooperative. The two locations were across the
path from each other, eye level, between the bridges.

We also saw the Nashville Warbler, slightly closer to the first bridge into
the area, down in the creek bed, very uncooperative, mostly flitting on the
opposite bank.

Nothing of the Black-throated Blue, nor the Blackpoll.

It felt lucky to see anything at all, as there were two very active, very
vocal Cooper's Hawks, nest-building, and kak-kak-kakking away the whole
time, right over the warbler area.

Also today--

Lazuli Bunting
Western Tanager
Chipping Sparrow, House Wren, a gazillion Yellow-rumps, etc.
We heard that the Waterthrush and a couple of Swainson's Thrushes were
there to be seen, but we didn't chase those.

[cobirds] Rose-breasted X Black-headed Grosbeak hybrid -- LARIMER

2020-05-08 Thread Joe Kipper
Hello Birders,
This morning multiple people reported a Rose-breasted Grosbeak at the
northwest corner of the CSU Environmental Learning Center in Fort Collins.
When I chased the bird this afternoon, I found a grosbeak singing softly in
the same area it was first reported, and at first I thought it was a
Rose-breasted. However, once I got better looks and other birders started
arriving, it became apparent that the bird was a hybrid!! Multiple people
saw the bird this afternoon, but I don't think many got photos, so I
thought I would share this with the birding community. It is a very
intriguing individual, and I'm sure other hybrids similar to this one can
potentially be seen along the Front Range. Photos and a more in depth
description of the bird are on the checklist below.

[cobirds] big age difference in owl nestlings?

2020-05-08 Thread 'Peter Ruprecht' via Colorado Birds
Hi Cobirders,
I've been watching a Great Horned Owl nest near my house in Superior.  The
nestlings are getting pretty big and starting to move out of the nest and onto
nearby branches.  However, a couple nights ago I thought I saw a small fluffy
white head sticking up among the much bigger other nestlings.  And then today
someone sent me a photo which I think pretty clearly shows a young GHOW
nestling (totally downy, maybe 2 weeks old at most) in there.
Has anyone ever heard of such an age difference in GHOW nestlings?  This is
clearly not just the usual asynchronous hatching.  I thought perhaps the small
one could have been brought in as prey from another nest but it seemed to be
sitting up and alive.  I didn't see anything like this in a quick google search.
Thanks,Peter RuprechtSuperior

Dinosaur Ridge - Bird Conservancy of the Rockies information may be found at:
http://www.birdconservancy.org/

More site information at hawkcount.org:
http://hawkcount.org/siteinfo.php?rsite=123

Site Description:
Dinosaur Ridge is the only regularly staffed hawkwatch in Colorado and is
the best place in the world to see migrating Ferruginous Hawks. Dinosaur
Ridge may be the best place in the country to see the rare dark morph of
the Broad-winged Hawk (a few are seen each spring). Hawkwatchers who linger
long enough may see resident Golden Eagles, Red-tailed Hawks and Prairie
Falcons, in addition to migrating Swainson's, Cooper's and Sharp-shinned
Hawks, American Kestrels and Turkey Vultures. Peregrine Falcons and
Ferruginous Hawks are uncommon; Northern Goshawk is rare but regular.
Non-raptor species include Rock Wren, and sometimes Bushtit, Western
Bluebird, Sandhill Crane, White-throated Swift, American White Pelican or
Dusky Grouse. Birders are always welcome.
The hawkwatch is generally staffed by volunteers from Bird Conservancy of
the Rockies from about 9 AM to around 3 PM from March 1st to May 7th.

Directions to site:
>From exit 259 on I-70 towards Morrison, drive south under freeway and take
left into first parking lot, the Stegosaurus lot. Follow small signs from
the south side of lot to hawkwatch site. The hike starts heading east on an
old two-track and quickly turns south onto a trail on the west side of the
ridge. When the trail nears the top of the ridge, turn left, head through
the gate, and walk to the clearly-visible, flat area at the crest of the
ridge.

[cobirds] Mississippi Kite over Littleton, Arapahoe Co 5/8

2020-05-08 Thread David Suddjian
Just after 1 pm Karen Strong and I were surprised to observe a *Mississippi
Kite* soaring over the Littleton Cemetery area in Littleton, Arapahoe
County. It circled several times then went due south departing the local
area. eBird shows two prior reports at least for Arapahoe County. Quite a
treat!

I'll post more about this at a later date, but Littleton Cemetery also has
5 *Ruby-crowned Kinglets *for some weeks now, for all appearances singing
on territory in the large spruce trees there. Breeding, if it occurs, would
I think be unprecedented in that area and maybe for the county. They are
singing their hearts out, sometimes nearly non-stop. They have particular
trees they are "always" in, and can be extremely responsive to recorded
songs.

[cobirds] Re: id help please ... Prospect Ponds, Larimer

2020-05-08 Thread Steven Rash
The one possibility that comes to mind is Baird's Sparrow. You may have
spotted one on its way over to Soapstone where they are known to breed. If
that is indeed it, you saved yourself a hellish walk in unsheltered
conditions come summertime.

One thing I like to keep in mind when mulling birds over is that uncommon
presentations of common birds are more common that common presentations of
uncommon birds. To that end, a Savannah that doesn't meet the criteria of
colorful wings is more probable, but Baird's is not outside the realm of
possibility for Larimer county. However, I would consider a prominent
yellow brow to be an uncommon presentation of that bird... Just my two
cents.

Hope that helps! Congrats on the Rose-Breasted Grosbeak, which is never a
consolation bird here in CO, haha.

Happy birding,

can't quite find a match...

group of 4 in trees between 1st pond and coral
plump sparrow with buff breast, uniform brown wings and striking head
pattern
the most striking feature was the black mustache/throat stripes like a lark
sparrow, also had small central dark spot on breast
however i believe there was a yellow wash on the stripe above the eye and
the center head stripe I think was rufous.

I've also considered Clay-colored but ... black stripes coming down the
throat?
Savannah are too colorful on wings
Lincolns are too yellow
Vesper pattern not striking enough

My consolation prize for this hard one was a Rose-breasted Grosbeak right
at the sign for the Learning Center where a memorial bridge is, high in a
cottonwood
