[cobirds] Bird Conservancy of the Rockies - Barr Banding Report, September 12
Numbers were somewhat better today, mostly there were more Wilson's Warblers coming through. Noticing limited fat on the warbler and other insect eating species and lots of fat on the sparrows/seedeaters. Probably has to do with the impact of the storm on the insect population. Caught our first Junco today..they seem to arrive earlier each fall. (And a week earlier than the past 2 years.) Star of the morning was an adult male American Redstart. Here's the breakdown for the 37 birds banded today: Rock Wren 1 House Wren 2 Orange-crowned Warbler 1 American Redstart 1 MacGillivray's Warbler 2 Wilson's Warber 18 Green-tailed Towhee 1 Chipping Sparrow 3 Song Sparrow 1 Lincoln's Sparrow 5 Gambel's White-crowned Sparrow 1 Dark-eyed Junco, Oregon 1 If you'd like to visit this fall: Due to restrictions related to Covid-19, we are requiring visitors to make a reservation and we will have only 6 visitors at the station at a time. We are doing three one-hour time slots, from 8-9, 9-10, and 10-11, on Tuesdays and then Thursdays through Sundays, through October 11. There is a $5 per person fee; scholarships are available to those unable to pay. All visitors, staff and volunteers will be wearing masks and people will be expected to socially distance. [cobirds] Re: Pectoral Sandpipers - Boulder Co
Hey, Peter & all. Hannah Floyd and I were at Little Gaynor Lake, Boulder County, at 10:10 am this Sat. morning, Sept. 12, and we also saw Peter Ruprecht's *pectoral sandpipers,* 3 for sure. A 4th bird, somewhat more distant, was perhaps a stilt sandpiper. Not sure about that, though. Another *Calidris* was a puzzle; will look at photos a bit later. Along with the *least sandpipers,* there were some *Baird sandpipers.* Viewing at Gaynor isn't ideal. The lake is bigger than it looks, and the glare is strong out there. I suspect the hour right after sunrise might be best. The lake has had nice shorebirds for more than two months now. Suboptimal viewing, but optimal shorebird habitat. The smell and the insects do not bother us. We revel in those things. Earlier in the morning, over at Lagerman Reservoir, also in Boulder County, Hannah and I, with Elena Klaver, saw 6 *red-necked phalaropes* and, for anybody who's keeping count, 277 *American wigeons.* Dainty sulphurs, *Nathalis iole*, were prolific. A cool thing about the phalaropes is that they were gratifyingly vocal: *tik..tok...* And out at Greenlee Preserve, eastern Boulder County, the hummerfest continues to rage on. Has anyone ever wondered why we don't say CALLY-ope and fuh-LAIR-uh-pee? Hm? [cobirds] Re: Little & Sabine's Gulls & Red Phalarope Chatfield
The Little Gull was still present at 3:40 pm, on the north side of the reservoir near the area of the spill way seen from the handicap fishing pier. It was a very distance view. I saw the Sabin Gulls but could not locate the Red Phalarope. [cobirds] Pectoral Sandpipers - Boulder Co
Cobirds, I stopped by Little Gaynor Lake this morning, where there are now buggy and sloppy (and smelly) mud flats. Due to heat waves visibility was not optimal, but it was fairly easy to see a loose group of 15 or so Calidris sandpipers. I think most were Least, but there were 4 similar-plumaged ones towering over them, which I'm pretty sure were Pectoral. eBird flagged them so I thought I'd let you all know in case someone wants to try to confirm. Also, plenty of killdeer. Plus about 20 teal and shovelers in the shallow water and assorted larger dabblers out in deeper water. Anyway, all that mud has got to be attractive to other migrating shorebirds so Little Gaynor may be worth a look during the next couple of weeks. [cobirds] Buff Breasted Sandpiper at Barr Lake SP
Hi all, Today at around 11:30 Santiago Tabares, Ren-Lee Deru and I found/refound a Buff Breasted Sandpiper on the west side of Barr. The bird was at roughly 39.949934, -104.772008 and was still present when we left the area. [cobirds] Sound ID help?
COBirders, While birding a neighborhood right across Belleview Ave. from Cherry Creek SP, I had a brief sighting of a medium-sized flycatcher-ish bird. Plain, light colored breast, gray-green back. Couldn’t catch a glimpse of wing-bars or any thing. It shot from some eaves of a house into a nearby tree, where it disappeared. It chattered a bit in flight, and very clearly called “(Quick) Three Beers” — except without the “Quick”. I waited to see if it would call again, but no luck (it may have flown on and I didn’t see it). It didn’t look dark enough to be a OSFL. Any ideas? Thanks! The two Sabine's and the one Little Gull WERE at Chatfield this morning. But two of us watched a Sabine's and Little fly over the dam towards South Platte Park Reservoir!
