I hadn't visited this ,at times, terrific birding venue for several
months. This morning I was both shocked and saddened to find the smaller of
the two ponds,[ on the west side of the dirt road], had been completely
drained. This pond was somewhat larger than the one at Jim Hamm Preserve
on
Leonard Sitongia and I had three Ferruginous Hawks, two adult and one
juvenile this morning just after 11 o'clock passing by Rabbit Mountain.
Spotted Towhees and White Crowned Sparrows were evident, but nary a

So I arrived at 7:45, swept my scope over shoreline and open water. Noted
the Ruddy Ducks, more BW Teal than yesterday, a flock of 9 Baird's
Sandpiper , a lone Western Sandpiper and Snowy Egret as reported. Then,
scanning the southern fenceline and poles for raptors I noticed a hunched
form atop
A lone Black necked Stilt and two first winter Franklin's Gulls at the

Folks that are coming on Thursday, please meet at dirt lot on right side
of entrance road. Its a short distance from the turnoff into the property.
You'll see an old washed up dump truck and a well traveled, pale blue
Hundai with Vermilion Flycatcher decal at rear. Carl Starace, Niwot
twenty minutes walking both sides of the road but came up empty on the Red
eyed Vireo. Then, on my last pass of the bridges south side I spotted a
perched Black Phoebe quite close to the road. It made just one
more sally/perch before flying off down the creek. Good May Birding

Valley Ranch this week and it reminded me of a winters day some years past
watching a sizeable flock of White winged Crossbill pecking away at a

gave us a whole series of good looks as it rushed in and out of each shadow
filled gap. Just several minutes passed and Sally spotted a Dipper emerging
from the creeks swift flow. Lastly, a light adult female Rough legged

This mornings Wilson Snipe count was down to 6 at Cottonwood Marsh. Sorry
Ted/others missed the larger assemblage. Also present were 7 Ring necked
