[cobirds] Firestone Gravel Pits Is Now Singular
I hadn't visited this ,at times, terrific birding venue for several months. This morning I was both shocked and saddened to find the smaller of the two ponds,[ on the west side of the dirt road], had been completely drained. This pond was somewhat larger than the one at Jim Hamm Preserve on County Line Road. I, and many others over some years have seen it on countless days just teeming with waterfowl of every variety. Today I saw only bulldozers in motion. There was lots of activity out on the eastern pond. Well over one hundred White Pelicans were spread out over its water and at rest on the edges. The sky was filled with gulls, there were two Western Grebes and Ruddy Ducks were in similar numbers as Lagerman Reservoirs. [cobirds] Lagerman Reservoir Birds and a Bobcat's Sweet Dreams
So I arrived at 7:45, swept my scope over shoreline and open water. Noted the Ruddy Ducks, more BW Teal than yesterday, a flock of 9 Baird's Sandpiper , a lone Western Sandpiper and Snowy Egret as reported. Then, scanning the southern fenceline and poles for raptors I noticed a hunched form atop the Osprey platform. I zoomed in and saw the closed eyes of a dozing Bobcat. It had lain down upon the resident Osprey's nesting material way up that pole. During the forty plus minutes of observation it repositioned itself three different directions. Just before it took to ground it raised it hind legs and looked down at the closest prairie dog. Within several minutes it then very gingerly grabbed hold of the struts just below the platform and slowly descended the pole and soon disappeared in taller grasses. [cobirds] A Note On Last Weekends Boulder Audubon Trip to Cheyenne Bottoms Preserve and Quivira National Wildlife Refuge, Kansas
A morning spent at the magnificent Cheyenne Bottoms marsh rewarded us with 57 species including both Hudsonian and Marbled Godwits, a Neotropic Cormorant, a Peregrine Falcon aggressively chasing waterfowl, two Snow geese, a Tundra Swan, both Meadowlarks and flocks of White Faced Ibis,[175], and White Pelican,[ 600+]..The afternoon was equally joyous for all with great looks at Snowy Plovers, Dunlins, Willets, Bairds and White Rumped Sandpipers, Black Tern, Ring Necked Pheasant and Barred Owl. Our Shorebird total was 16 species, Sparrow species was 10 and we had half a dozen Northern Cardinal and Red Bellied Woodpecker. The final tally for the two preserves gave us 92 species for the weekend, and that came with only 2 warblers, Common Yellowthroat and a single Orange Crowned. For those of you who have not heard of Cheyenne Bottoms, its 30,000 acres stand as the most significant staging area in the Central U.S. for Shorebirds. No other site from Texas to the Dakotas has even 10 percent of those counted ,[31 species], at the Bottoms. Its a National Treasure. [cobirds] Unexpected Woodpecker Show at Heil Valley Ranch
My wife and I headed for Heil Valley Ranch this morning and nearly changed our location due to the hordes of cyclists streaming down Neva Road. Boy are we glad we stayed the course! We'd gone about a half mile down the entrance road,[past all the old sheds], when we spotted a Lewis's Woodpecker crossing in front of us. It perched atop a Ponderosa just as another came into view. A third Lewis's followed within several minutes, these were both juveniles. As we walked along the road, getting better vantage points, Sally suddenly yelled "Red Headed". We watched not one, but two Red Headed Woodpeckers fly to different perches. Now all the birds were on the same side of road, all seen within about 15 minutes and within 50 yards. Quite the show. [cobirds] Roger's Grove Heron's and a Down Feather
About 10 this morning I found both Little Blue and the Green Heron at Rogers Grove Pond in Longmont. The Little Blue was at the southern side of the island and Green along the north edge of the pond itself. It is not so easy to see both these species on same day/venue in Boulder County. But even though the Green Heron was a first state for me,it was the sight of a Heron's feather in the breeze on Sunday that I will long remember . As my wife Sally and I strolled along Old South St. Vrain Road , we had spotted a Great Blue Heron high in a dead Cottonwood busily preening underwing. We were well past the big bird when I noticed a large down feather floating high above the creek. One of the many Violet Green Swallows coming off the cliff face caught it, then dropped it. A second swallow quickly snagged the down and it was gone. Carl Starace, Niwot -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "Colorado Birds" group. [cobirds] Black Phoebe in Hygiene, Boulder Cty.
Hi,About midday today I stopped at the St. Vrain Creek bridge along Hygiene Rd. in hopes of hearing/seeing a Red eyed Vireo reported there. I was pleased to see a Snowy Egret, several Common Merganser and 4 Spotted Sandpiper along the sandy wash on the north side of the road. I spent about twenty minutes walking both sides of the road but came up empty on the Red eyed Vireo. Then, on my last pass of the bridges south side I spotted a perched Black Phoebe quite close to the road. It made just one more sally/perch before flying off down the creek. [cobirds] New Arrivals, Walden Ponds Today
You could hear Yellow Warblers singing as soon as you reached the lot early today. I counted over a dozen overall. Further in were several Warbling Vireos ,and a single Bullocks Oriole in good voice. A Common Yellowthroat was noted by others. The marsh had two's of American Avocet, White Faced Ibis and Spotted Sandpiper. On a different note, a Mink was having quite a day on that cold, wet Sunday last. It caught a number of Bluegill, came out of the reeds just by the beginning of the boardwalk and passed right by us, over the matted grass to perhaps feed its young. Hello, Yesterday morning Sally Swain and I spotted a perched Swainson's Hawk along 79th St. in Niwot just north of the transfer station. We've been seeing one along this section of road all season. Later, as I excited the car at the upper lot at Sandstone Ranch a really dark Merlin took up from the bluff and cruised passed me pistons humming, heading in the direction of Union Reservoir. This morning I had just settled into the car after a hike at Rabbit Mountain when a Rednaped Sapsucker flew into the closest tree. Had my first flock of,[10], Bushtits in a while along the Eagle Wind Trail there as well. At midday I found an Osprey atop a wooden post at the western end of Clover Basin Reservoir. [cobirds] A Dipper, and Canyon Wren in Lyons
Yesterday, my wife and I took a walk along St. Vrain Creek in Lyons. Old St. Vrain Rd. was quite lively in early afternoon. Our first finds were a single female Pine Grosbeak and White winged Junco at a residents feeders. Then, as we passed a section of close rock wall a quite active Canyon Wren gave us a whole series of good looks as it rushed in and out of each shadow filled gap. Just several minutes passed and Sally spotted a Dipper emerging from the creeks swift flow. Lastly, a light adult female Rough legged Hawk passed overhead. [cobirds] Ferruginous Hawks at Lagerman Reservoir
Hi,I didn't find yesterday's Iceland Gull but did observe a light juvenile Ferruginous Hawk when I arrived at 8:20 am. It was on the ground about 75 yards from the western edge of the reservoir. Some time later David Dowell and Russ Thompson arrived looking for the Iceland Gull,[and we all had great looks at this hawk. Three Northern Harriers put in an appearance, all at the same time. After David and Russ left I observed a second 1st year Ferruginous come in and land on the Osprey platform just south of the first bird. I had been watching the first Ferruginous for over two hours. It finally flew off when the second bird left the platform. A flock of a dozen American Pipits took wing just before I left at 10:30. [cobirds] December Dawn in Niwot, Colorado
Hi All, 6:15 am.Hearing Great Horned Owls most mornings of late we gazed out our bedroom window towards the large cottonwood centered in the field. At the trees very top were the Owl pair in perfect silhouette with the skies rosy hues behind them. They were both facing our way and proceeded to alternately bow to one another, each with its tail raised. They took some ten bows apiece before one broke the spell and dropped into a glide. [cobirds] Firestone Gravel Pits Birds, Weld County a note on Peter Matthiessen, Author/ Naturalist
Hello,This bright morning I had 4 White Pelicans, 4 Eared and 2 Pied billed Grebes out in Firestone. This afternoon I have learned of the passing of Peter Matthiessen, Long Island, N.Y. author, naturalist, environmentalist. Peter lived many years close to Sagg Pond, a noted shorebird locale that almost annually had rarities. He was a passionate birder and wildlife enthusiast and of all the many great nature writers we have perhaps no one wrote as eloquently of our worlds wildlife or as insightfully of their surroundings. His, Shorebirds of North America, is truly a classic in the field as well as being a work of great beauty. Peter wrote of the Himalayas and a search for the elusive Snow Leopard in, The Snow Leopard, and of the Arctic Skua in, End of the Earth, A Voyage to Antarctica, and of the worlds Crane species in, The Birds of Heaven, Travels with Cranes. His writings have been a life long inspiration to me and no doubt many others. Farewell Peter.
