There was an error loading module named:

I don't see anything under known issues on the wiki regarding shr.

where to get qi from? wiki has conflicting information. and, why is 2009 not listed in distros?

2009-05-05 Thread Michael Shiloh
1) Where is qi?

http://wiki.openmoko.org/wiki/Qi#Installation says

http://people.openmoko.org/andy/

but http://wiki.openmoko.org/wiki/Om2009 says

http://downloads.openmoko.org/distro/testing/NeoFreerunner/

which is right? Tell me and I'll correct the wiki.

2) 2009 not described in download page

Is there a reason that 2009 is not referenced in

I know it's still under development but it should still be listed. If
there are no objections I'll write a paragraph and link to

SHR missing rootfs (was: Re: bearstech SHR missing rootfs)

2009-02-17 Thread Michael Shiloh

SHR project currently resides at: http://shr-project.org/trac this link
has instructions on getting and installing your SHR image.

Just before I fixed the wiki page it occurred to me to double-check:

http://shr-project.org/trac points to "how to install" which says to get
images here:

http://build.shr-project.org/shr-testing/images/om-gta02/

which contains only the kernel and not the rootfs.

The wiki page is very helpful in that it points to a separate page which
discusses the different versions of the rootfs, but the links point to
the same place above which has only the kernel.

What now?

bearstech SHR missing rootfs

2009-02-17 Thread Michael Shiloh
According to the wiki

SHR images are available here

http://shr.bearstech.com/shr-testing/images/om-gta02/?C=M;O=D

which contains the the kernel and modules but not the rootfs.

I suggest this be fixed either by including the rootfs, or by including

Thanks! I was afraid it was previously discussed but I did an Internet
search for "openmoko" and "qpe" and found nothing. It should have picked

This should also be listed in the "known issues" section of 2008.12.
I'll add it once I find the references you hint at.

Can you provide a slightly more limited hint? I expect the words
"segfault" and "engine" will appear for many other topics.

Thanks,

The qpe process vanished. This is bad. This is not meant to happen and

Oye.

Moving this thread to the kernel list. This seems very wrong to me.

If I understand you correctly, this sounds like a bug.

Let me confirm:

1. Disconnect your FreeRunner from any power source.
2. Power cycle (to clear any previous state).
3. Connect the FreeRunner to a PC USB port. We know these source at most
500mA.
4. Display (and report) chgmode.

Anxiously awaiting your measurements.

If there is no 4.7K resistor, I'd move this discussion to the kernel
list. We should not be charging at 1A if we do not see this resistor.

Very interesting. Do you kill udhcpc in between invokations? I think
it's a daemon.

Of course the real issue is why in looses the connection. I presume you
have suspend disabled?

Have you tried a different channel? One of my neighbors is on a close
channel and things got better when I changed my AP to an unused channel.
iwlist is a great help here.

http://wiki.openmoko.org/wiki/Neo_FreeRunner_Wifi#Disable_power_management
suggests that power management caused problems. You might try this too.

Please let us know what works and what doesn't. Better yet add it to the
wiki.

I don't think we have a specific page linking to other people's pages.
Usually they are linked in various relevant sections (e.g. since you

Re: FDOM and WiFi

2008-10-03 Thread Michael Shiloh
At this point you can try manually configuring the wireless card:

iwconfig eth0 essid linksys

Does your network have an encryption key? How many letters? I think
there is a bug that one letter keys don't work.

If your network has an encryption key, I think another bug requires that
you set the key before the ID thus:

iwconfig eth0 key 123456789 essid linksys

Let me know if this works and we'll update the wiki accordingly

Good idea.

If your computer doesn't have an SD slot, you can buy an inexpensive USB
to SDcard adapter. This is what I use and it's been fine.

(when you say it's stuck while booting, how long did you wait? IIRC
there is a network related task which will eventually time out, but it
does take quite a long time.)

I'm confused. I thought that we didn't turn on the charger until we

Excellent question. That's the one case I left out. I'm pretty sure it
does, because I'm pretty sure that we do not check for battery brand.

Any checking of battery brand would happen in software, where we can see
it (and remove if desired).

True, there is a chip that handles charging, but I'm pretty sure that
battery brand is not one of the parameters we feed it. Perhaps one of

> The battery usually lays in just like it does in the phone. The battery

Exactly right. My understanding is this:

Nokia devices (phones and stand-alone chargers) will not charge
non-Nokia batteries, most likely because they can't be sure they have
the correct charging parameters.

Most after-market or no-name brands of Nokia-compatible chargers don't
test the make of the battery, most likely because adding the capability
to perform this test would add to the cost of the charger.

Thus:

* You can use a Nokia or Nokia-compatible BL-4C, BL-5C, or BL-6C in the Neo

* You can charge the Neo battery in a Nokia-compatible charger that is
not Nokia branded

* You can NOT charge the Neo battery in a Nokia branded phone or charger

I've had quite the opposite experience: GPS works more reliably than

I presume you've had GPS fixes with the same device in the past?

I presume you updated the kernel as well as the root FS?

Did you try with/without an SD card inserted? Now that I think of it, I
didn't have an SD card installed.

2008-09-20 Thread Michael Shiloh
Michael Shiloh wrote:

>> have - misery.

Sorry everyone, I found that comment amusing and was going to respond in
some clever way, then changed my mind, and unfortunately sent the
partially composed message.

To paraphrase the original poster, we buy the FR for what we don't have
- a generic Linux computer in a cellphone, on which we can develop all
manner of applications in any language we chose, without the constraints
of the carrier or the cellphone provider

I appreciate that many of you purchased the FR to use as your daily
phone. But I really believe that the magic of Openmoko comes from what
we do with this platform that is different from, and way beyond, a mere
phone.

That is why the discussion about extending the FR with external sensors
interested me so much.

So what other ideas do you all have of ways to extend the utility of the
FreeRunner? In what ways can you make it "more than a cellphone"? (and
I don't limit this to physical extensions.)

How can we all rise above the current issues with GSM, SMS, etc. and
create the device of the future?

My plan:
I am going to take the ideas gathered in the discussion about reporting
the tides (when they drifted (pun intended) into case modifications and
external sensors) and build an extended FreeRunner. I plan to use a
Pelican case and either an Arduino, EZ-USB, or MAKE Controller Kit to
interface to external sensors and perhaps also actuators, like hobby
servo motors.

What is it going to be? I'm not sure yet. But I'm sure ideas will come.

I'm thinking we need to make a generic expandable water proof (or at
least harsh conditions proof) case for the FR.

For rapid prototyping, the very best interface would be USB. Future
applications might tie in at a more intimate level. At least for the
sensors mentioned so far the data rate is slow enough that our USB could
easily handle it.

I'm envisioning something that looks like a Pelican case, one of the
smaller ones, with the guts of a FreeRunner and room for additional
hardware, perhaps an Arduino board, extra sensors, and an extra battery,
but still handheld.

Some Pelican cases have a clear cover.

I've wondered if there exist waterproof button activators that transmit
force via a magnet, like magnetic stirrers or pumps, so that there is no
hole in the case, no gaskets, and no place to leak (assuming the
original case is waterproof in the first place). Anyone know of such a
thing?

Broadcast receiver based on FreeRunner (openmokast): Answers to some questions

2008-09-16 Thread Michael Shiloh
I collected some questions from the community, which Jean-Michel
Bouffard, a Research Engineer at the Communications Research Centre in
Canada, graciously agreed to answer. I hope to see his work inspire
similar projects:

(Note: The attachment (*) Jean-Michel mentions below will be placed on
downloads or some such place shortly)

==

It will be a pleasure answering some of your questions.

> In particular, people are interested in whether the plastic or the
> hardware will be available to the public, even in small, experimental
> quantities, and beyond, whether you know of any commercial modules that

The plastic part was designed from the case CAD files that were released
on the openmoko.com website. I attached (*) a model that can be seen using
the free edrawings viewer (http://www.edrawingsviewer.com/). We will
most probably release the source ProE model of the backplate extension
as soon as the author agrees.

From the source ProE model, we have ordered a small quantity of 3D
printouts in ABS from a local company (http://cimetrixsolutions.com/).
Other provider of such custom ABS parts could also be
http://www.protomold.com or https://www.redeyerpm.com

For the hardware module, it was provided by a manufacturer but we are in
a discussion process with them so nothing will be released for now.

To sum it all up we are not planning to release any hardware ourselves
but after we release the extension ProE files, people will be able to
order plastic parts themselves. And hopefully our discussion with
receiver manufacturer(s) should result in a receiver commercially
available with the driver included in openmokast. So I suggest that you
register to our RSS feed
(http://openmokast.org/index.php?option=com_rd_rss&id=2) to stay current
with the news.

The hardware uses a USB interface so it was connected to the USB port of
the FreeRunner from inside the case. When setting USB in "host mode" and
the "host mode" in type "1", the FreeRunner is able to power the
broadcasting receiver from its battery.

This work on SDR was conducted by a completely different team from the
CRC so I cannot say if they have ever released some of their work to the
public.

Do you think the distortion was on the analog side e.g. volume settings,

[Fwd: Re: Open Broadcasting Phone at BA2008]

2008-09-10 Thread Michael Shiloh
I'd like to bring to your attention an amazing project. From their website:

"The Mobile Multimedia Broadcasting (MMB) team of the Communications
Research Centre Canada (CRC) will showcase its new broadcasting handset
prototype called openmokast in Amsterdam at the IBC 2008 exhibition this
week. The prototype, based on the Openmoko FreeRunner manufactured by
FIC Inc., is the first open handset to integrate the reception of live
digital radio, video and data services with typical smart phone
functions such as mobile telephony, wireless internet and GPS

Some details:

* A functional USB DAB/DMB receiver inserted inside a case extension,
the design of which was based on the Openmoko CAD files

* Custom software that can now receive live DAB/DMB radio and
decode different types of services such as:
- Musicam audio
- DAB+ audio
- Slideshow
- Journaline text news

(The software is available as a package from the download section on
their website but it can be used only with input files because the
hardware receiver is not available to the public.)

Moreover, this OpenMoko based DAB/DMB receiver will be shown at the
International Broadcasting Conference (IBC2008) in Amsterdam later this
week.

More details at http://openmokast.org/

Thanks to Jean-Michel Bouffard for making this possible and for bringing

I've just added a link to the page describing the adapters.

Remember that this is not a true OTG port.

Would be nice if they actually showed the connector from the business
end, so we can see what it's like.

I presume it's what we call a USB Type A Female to Female Gender
Changer, like this one:
http://wiki.openmoko.org/wiki/Specialized_USB_cables#Ready-made_type_A_jack_to_a_type_A_jack_adapter_.28gender_changer.29

Yes, that should allow you to connect a random USB device that is
typically attached to a computer, to the end of the USB cable that came
with your FreeRunner.

With this adapter your USB pendrive would be powered by the FreeRunner,
which is what you want.

You are talking about a powered USB hub. Yes, they exist, but generally
they only power the _device_ USB ports, i.e. only downstream devices. A
hub like this must not pump power into the upstream host, because the
host is normally providing power itself.

The fact that the Neo can be powered by USB when in host mode is
non-standard, and thus it's unlikely that you'll find an off-the-shelf
cable or hub that will do this. You will most likely have to wire
something up yourself.

See
http://wiki.openmoko.org/wiki/USB_host#Providing_power_to_run_and_charge_the_Neo_while_in_host_mode

I've tried to answer many of these questions here:

If you feel this information is unclear, lacking, or wrong, please
correct or please let me know.

In particular, I'd love people to add any specific setups they have that

Thanks to David, really, for initiating the Spanish group, for creating
the original Spanish list, and for helping me get the list moved to
Openmoko.

Openmoko is proud to support the Spanish local Openmoko group, and
Openmoko encourages the formation of other local Openmoko groups.

A mailing list seems like a useful tool, not to split the community, but
to allow conversation that may not be relevant to the world at large
(e.g. meetings or group purchases or, in this case, discussion in a
different language).

I'll be happy to create mailing lists as needed. For the time being we
are doing this under the umbrella of the local-openmoko project. Email
me ([EMAIL PROTECTED]) to request such a list.

(The San Francisco local Openmoko Group, in contrast, has been invited
to simply use the San Francisco Linux User's Group mailing list, at
least until we become a nuisance to them.)

I'll create a wiki page for local Openmoko groups, and look forward to
adding more.

It provides enough current for fast charge, but unless by complete

Any experiences with power hungry USB devices?

2008-08-29 Thread Michael Shiloh
I'm working on documenting various aspects of our USB port.

We believe that the FreeRunner USB port should be capable of delivering
the standard USB high current of 500mA. We also believe that we respond
properly to USB negotiation of this current, up from the minimum of 100mA.

I suddenly remembered that someone posted about using a USB keyboard
that didn't work due to high current. However, the FreeRunner should be
able to provide exactly as much current as a desktop PC, which I assume
works with this keyboard.

If any of you have experienced difficulty with the FreeRunner powering
USB devices, please speak up.

Some of our developers are buried trying to keep up with new and old bug
reports. Each one needs to be verified, checked for duplication, checked
for whether it's been solved, and this is all before any real bug fixing
takes place.

I don't want to speak for those developers, but I wonder if the
community can help us with some of these tasks. I know that one of our
main developers said that he spent some 30% of his time on this.

This would free up developer time to work on getting fixes into the distro.

2. Belkin makes a 5-conductor mini-USB to USB cable, useful as a start

3. It's possible that the ID resistor in the FR charger is in the

Don't tell me we forgot to ship you the lanyard hole! That would be a
