Re: Crowdfunding an Ubuntu smartphone

2013-08-26 Thread Yury Sakarinen

Dr. H. Nikolaus Schaller писал 2013-08-24 17:31:

For me GTA04 is not usable as daily phone. It's now collecting dust
in shelf.

Why?

1/ poor power management
2/ bugged reenumerating modem

GTA04 is good enough only in some situations. E.g. ok if i carry it
to work
where i can anytime charge it. When i am on bike 150km from home i
must have
reliable phone in case that the bike breaks up or in case that i need
map.

I took GTA04 with 2 batteries and N900 on my bike trip this summer. I
used
N900 as a phone with SIM card. GTA04 was switched off - i just used
it for
GPS. But after 4 hours one battery was empty and second battery was
50% empty
during one night in suspend. On the other hand N900 was working whole
4 days.

I used it for calls, for wifi in camps and in the end even for GPS.

That is something I still don't understand. From a power budget the
modem is
specified to have 3-10 mA in suspend while registered to a base
station.

I have even verified this with an ampere-meter.

And there is only one potential deviation - if there is some
attenuation (e.g. wall)
there may be a situation where the modem receives the base station
well and

tries to answer/register. But since the base station does not receive
it at all, it
tries with high power. In this case the modem current increases to
50-100 mA.

BTW: this is the same with almost all mobile devices.

So it must be something in the OMAP system and that is IMHO the same
as the

N900 has... So pure kernel code.

BTW: this would not change by redesigning the GTA04 into a spare N900
case...

At that time, as the main developments are in the "care" of the common
/ production / communication problems, the community should try to
implement the microkernel (eg arm port gnu / hurd) on the existing
architecture GTA02/04, to see the resources consumption of core servers
(to give chance new mobile platform based on open hardware stack).

Re: Another open hardware mod experiment: RFID-tag/Reader board for the Freerunner, Nanonote (?) and Beagleboard

2013-01-17 Thread Yury Sakarinen

Hi,

I would like to buy The Freerunner RFID but boards not on sale. Does
anyone have an extra?

http://www.handheld-linux.com/wiki.php?page=RFID%20Board

Dr. H. Nikolaus Schaller писал 2011-04-11 11:23:

Dear all,
besides the GTA04 and the Freerunner Navigation Board,
we have been working behind the scenes on a new hardware mod,
originally for the Openmoko Freerunner. It is a

RFID Antenna, RFID Tag (M24LR64) and a RFID Reader (TRF7960) board.
For 13 MHz (ISO14443, ISO15693).

The project is still in its beginnings, but the hardware is designed
and
first samples have been built and appear to work (at least as far as
we
could test them). And, a first U-Boot based driver running on a
BeagleBoard
has shown that the RFID reader chip responds and sends interrupts.
The
tag chip also works and has been tested with an external USB based
reader

stick.

The boards have solder points so that it should be possible to
interface
to different SoC and boards, e.g. BeagleBoard, Nanonote,
OpenPandora...

The minimum wiring is that it nedds 3.3V power, 3 SPI wires and a INT
line
to a GPIO. If power should be controlled or the SoC has 1.8V I/O,
more

wires are needed.

For documentation and details I have uploaded some material to
this page:

http://wiki.openmoko.org/wiki/Freerunner_RFID_Board

Schematics and board layout are available in EAGLE format.

Now, what can you do with it? I don't know but would be happy to hear
about ideas...

We have the idea to sell these complete boards at 79 EUR (which
is approx. half the price of a TI eval board), if you are interested
in

experimenting with this technology.

relation to the project. Second may be a nice backround picture, but
i

think it's not scaleable at all. Number for droped out because of
scalability, too. The sixth i liked, but i find it too nerdlike,
reminds

me somehow of startrek... Number 9 dropped out because i don't see a
direct connection with the tux. This project is about free hardware,
not
software (despite the fact that we need software, too...) Proposal
11 i

can't connect to the project well, too.

Number five i choose because of its eye-catcher abilities. For
scaling
small one may have to use the phoenix alone, without the device and
the
whirls underneath. Number 7 i liked because auf it's simplicity. But
i

don't know, if i have seen something like that already somewhere. I
think proposal 8 does connect at best with our devices. Maybe the
broken

chain should be symbolised a little bit more clear. The 11th i chose
because it connects well to the fact that its about a hardware
project,
the symbol alone is nice to use at small scales and i haven't seen
much

symbols like that already (high recognizability)

so far, my 2 cents...

Dear Diary. For me gta04 expensive. I'm willing to buy it for the same
price I bought my freerunner 5 years ago in Idasystems. It is about 385
euros plus delivery. Note: for this price, I buy only the motherboard
without a case and screen. If it were possible to sell all produced for
this moment GTA04 to ~15 gta02 owners who downloaded images
(http://sourceforge.net/projects/qtmoko/files/GTA02/) at this price,
then perhaps there would be a push to develop and more talks about
gta04. Also I think that near 50 people stayed on older distributions
openmoko (or shr). And I think that is all active community now.

Thank you. I will take it for presentation at LVEE winter 2012.

Hi,
i have uploaded QtMoko v39 which should fix problems with v38, that
is:

* alsa states are now in correct place and sound should work now
again

* the kernel package should be now again installable

I have quickly tested it in NAND and it looked ok to me. I hope there
will be
no problems this time.

Hi, list.

There are 2 covers for gta02 made of plastic and are too thick (~ 2.5

If it were possible to make them out of aluminum (0.5-1mm), we would
have

a slim and elegant case for our phone.. No other changes needed..

Good question, however moulds are designed to produce certain amount
of

cases. Looking at how much was made, moulds can be at end of their
lives.

AFAIK they have been made in 2006 or 2007 for the Neo1973 (and have
been slightly modified for the GTA02). So I think they have been made
within FIC and since FIC was finally the manufacturing subcontractor
of
Openmoko, Inc. I think they could be somewhere within FIC. Or have
been

scrapped there after some years of not being used.

Anyways, they aren't of big help since the components inserted into
the

case (earpiece, vibracall motor, speaker) are no longer produced
or available.

So we have to go the painful way of designing our own cases. But the
good side is that we can improve on the outer shape and look&feel.

I want FBReader without QX too (and Navit is second on my list). It
should be
just matter of writing qbuild project files, but i am currently
working on

something else and dont want to interrupt it...

Radek

Yeah.. i see,,

FYI: I found FBreader that works fantastically,
without any problems with taps by finger.

http://www.mikecrash.com/index.php?name=Downloads&d_op=getit&lid=81

Just remove fbreader and install modified version with dpkg:
fbreaderm_0.10.7dfsg-2_armel.deb

Might be worth to add it to qt-appl repository?

There are also several useful programs for debian.
I do not know who this man, but he did a good job.

I think, I'll try the WIKI-Version again

Success!

From WIKI http://wiki.openmoko.org/wiki/QtMoko#Navit_Installation I
only had to repeat

# cd /
# unzip /media/card/download/navit-qtm.zip (I didn't remove it)

and than configure QX's favorites again.

I don't see any map, but navits's gui.

Step by step

now u need to rename & place your german map to
/media/card/MapsNavit/osm_benelux.bin
then try with "name should make sense" steps.. but better stop this
point and give up others steps )

Re: Qtmoko v35 & FBreader

2011-06-14 Thread Yury Sakarinen

You can not scroll pages, especially when the tap enabled. This
functionality is not provided.

Also you can disable the text selection in the settings.

To avoid an issue of particularly slow to tap pages, you need to
install version 0.12.10, but it is
not in the repository: http://www.fbreader.org/desktop/#debian (now
only for i386 and amd64 platforms)

In version 0.10.7 tap normally works only when you press screen by
stylus.

FBreader contains curve algorithm for determining gestures.

to list: please advise if anyone knows other convenient bookreaders
(may be without using QX if possible).

Thanks Radek. Now my FR used for 100 pct without the tedious
procedure of running through qx xterm %)

If you copy-paste this to FR shell you'll be able to use "Favourites"
and
there will be new icon for "E-book reader QX" which will launch
FBReader

correctly:

cat > /usr/share/applications/FBReaderQX.desktop <<__END__
[Desktop Entry]
Name=E-book reader QX
GenericName=E-book reader
Comment=E-book reader
TryExec=fbreader.sh
Exec=fbreader.sh %F
StartupNotify=true
Terminal=false
Type=Application
Icon=FBReader.png
Categories=Office;Viewer;Literature;
__END__

cat > /usr/bin/fbreader.sh <<__END__
#!/bin/sh
export LD_LIBRARY_PATH=
FBReader
__END__

chmod +x /usr/bin/fbreader.sh

Hope this helped

You need to run it from QX. However there is problem that FBReader
tries to

use QtMoko's embedded QT instead of system QT. To start it correctly
you need
to do something like this (e.g. from QX xterm):

export LD_LIBRARY_PATH=
