Re: [FOSS-GPS] Releasing FoxtrotGPS 1.2.0--translations needed

2014-10-09 Thread Marc Verwerft
Since we're on, this topic, I have another question/issue.

I noticed that in the translation there are a few lists (separated by the
pipe character) that in English are nicely alphabetically sorted.

What is the preferred approach for translation? When we translate to
different languages, the list is not sorted anymore. Should we just
translate and not care about the sorting? Or can we sort our translations?

In other words do these lists have 'hardcoded' links to the implementation
of the functionality of each item?

Marc

FWIW: I've completed the translation to Dutch - alas I'm not in the

Thanks for the good work.

GTA01 (Neo1973) questions

2011-02-27 Thread Marc Verwerft
Hi list,

My intention is to 'revive' my Neo1973 to take it along for a 5-week trip. I
don't want to use it as a phone, just for it's GPS (maps) capabilities. I've
loaded SHR (lite) image but it takes up some much space that after a 'opkg
update' my device is 99% full.

So, some questions for the more knowledgeable:
- how do I get rid of all phone/SMS and contact apps? Is there an easy way
to figure this out? Or would I be beter off with a different distribution
altogether?
- I had a look at the gllin scripts - seems they've hadn't been kept inline
with the newest kernels. How do I start the gps chip nowadays? And would
gllin still work?
- I prefer to install either tangogps or foxtrotgps. Can I still use those
on the GTA01?

Marc

Hello Atilla,

Welcome to Belgium ;-)

I don't have a freerunner, only a Neo1973 model. Have always used Belgacom
(telephone only, never tried GPRS) and never had troubles.
AFAIK there are only 3 major players here:
- proximus
- base
- mobistar
See also (in dutch, sorry)
http://nl.wikipedia.org/wiki/GSM_%28communicatie%29#Belgi.C3.AB
All the others 'rent' from them. Oh, and BTW, Belgium is not the cheapest of
countries for telephone, so better look out for the tariffs.

Marc

I'm definitively going to like this thread :-)

I was one of the first to buy a Neo and have had some nice times with

remember using the phone from commandline. Unfortunately, due to work
circumstances, I had less and less time to play with it. This has
changed now and I hope I can get get it to work again.

I think this thread is a _must_ have. I was getting depressed by all
the mails describing what didn't work while the Neo and the freerunner
are such wonderful products. The work that most guys have put in is
impressive and I'm sure that 10 years from now will look at it and
say: yep, we definitively changed the playing field!

Hmm. You don't like the openness of the OS? Can you elaborate why?
It's the openness of the OS and underlying hardware that allows to
have inventive uses for this device ...

And as regards security: if there is anything I learned from the likes
of Bruce Schneier, it's to distrust anything not open for inspection

I'm not sure about the rest of europe, but in the Netherlands it's fairly
normal to go to a shop and purchase whatever phone you want together with
whatever contract you want. The phone shop will simply get a provision for
each contract sold and use this to discount the phones they sell. This
results in lists like this: http://www.gsmweb.nl/tmobile/index_toestel.htm

You really don't need anything from an operator to get on that list, when
there is demand for a phone it will can be sold both with and without
contracts. Overhere FIC needs to get these resellers on board, not the
operators.

Same in Belgium. We have the 3 big operators (Proximus, Base,
Mobistar) who have their own network. Besides that we have approx. 30
virtual operators (who rent from the 3 above).
None of them will refuse a phone to hook up to their network.
Guess this also counts as 'free' :-)

Consider there is a simple market-list application, in which I note

My wife would love this :-)

I'm thinking about a plug-in architecture so you can extend this idea
as far as it goes, bugzilla integration, mail client integration, web
browser integration, integration with an outliner/mindmapper, project
planner, tomboy, etc. Every new plug-in will open a door to another
cool idea.

Started to write it a couple weeks ago, got a sourceforge account[2].
There is a very trivial demonstration application on subversion and as

Besides being an allround usefull PIM/GSM device I would also like to
use it as a kind of Tripy roadmaster
(http://www.tripy.be/pg.asp?pageID=121). This device tracks where you
go but can also display rudimentary maps.

They display is actually a roadbook. It indicates which direction to
go and for how long, combined with basic info such as how far you are
from the starting point, name of the town/village you are, etc. A lot
of beautiful roadbooks are available on the internet. I use them on my

Hi Ramses,

Well, it's perfectly possible to develop applications without having a
Neo at your disposal. Since all libraries are based on glib/gtk (see
http://www.gtk.org), which also serves as the underlying libraries for
GNOME, you can indeed start with learning GTK, possibly using a python
or perl interface if you want to get going quickly.

Once you're a bit familiar with this you can build the openmoko base
system (see http://wiki.openmoko.org/wiki/MokoMakefile) and 'emulate'
it all with
http://wiki.openmoko.org/wiki/Getting_OpenMoko_working_on_host_with_Xephyr
or http://wiki.openmoko.org/wiki/Getting_OpenMoko_working_on_host_with_Xoo

If you want to do more then simple GTK apps, I suggest you start
looking into the code of the Neo using svn. It's open ...

bluetooth on a bike

2007-03-06 Thread Marc Verwerft

Hi all,

I've been reading this list for a while and am very interested in the
Neo/Openmoko for all kinds of reasons but mostly because it's free.
The combination of bluetooth and possible GPS mapping software made me
think of the following.

I like driving on a motorcycle. Sometimes I have a passenger. It's
always nice when you can talk to each other. So the following
questions came to mind:
- if both me and my passenger have bluetooth headsets, would we be
able to talk to each other using the bluez implementation?
- would we both be able to hear music (Ogg, mp3)?
- would we be able to hear music _and_ directions from the GPS mapping
software (_and_ possibly talk to each other?)

Regards (and keep up the good work),

Re: Back from FOSDEM

2007-02-25 Thread Marc Verwerft

He hints to a slide that was presented by Sean.

Sean first said that Neo was not named after the character from the
matrix movie.
But then he gave quote that applied to the neo1973:
Never send a human to do a machine's job. (From agent Smith).

One of the points Sean was making is that we spend way too much time
telling all the devices we have what our preferences are. He wanted
the devices to learn from us and anticipate what we want to do.

Shipment of phones

2007-02-25 Thread Marc Verwerft

Hi all,

Since the order and shipment of the phones is coming closer, I thought
I should share this.

A couple of years ago I bought speakers from a Thai company. They were
shipped through TNT using EXW incoterm to Belgium - EU. They were
listed at 150$ (roughly 130 euro at that time) in Thailand. When they
arrived I had to pay an extra 95 euro for tax/customs - rights.

I contacted TNT about this and they told me that it was because the
company shipped the goods using EXW (see also
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Incoterm).
According to the helpdesk from TNT, if the company would have used CIF
on their invoice, it wouldn't have made a price difference for them,
but I would end up paying only 30 euro. Which is considerably less
then 95 !!

There is an entry in the Wiki about shipping notes, but before I
posted anything there I wanted to check/compare/confirm the above.

Any comments or similar experiences with buying goods from outside EU anyone?

Marc.

this page http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Email_templates and send
them the 'declaration of consent' in the rectangle if you agree. Then they

Michael,

English is not my native tongue and I certainly didn't mean we wouldn't help

And of course any results or interesting observations you make along the

Need info on AGPS

2007-01-24 Thread Marc Verwerft

All,

I've been reading on this lists for some time now and saw that there are
quite intelligent people here ;-)
I am not very up to date in my knowledge of GPS. Can somebody answer me a
couple of quick questions?

  1. Has anybody here ever used AGPS? I'd like to hear your experiences.
  2. The chip in the Neo1973 is a Global Locate AGPS. Anybody know what
  type? Hammerhead maybe?
  3. I understand the concept of assisted GPS. But does the phone have
it's own antenna/receiver so that it can work without 'assistance'? That's
  not really clear to me.
  4. Has anybody info on the whereabouts of assistance servers,
  especially in Belgium and Europe?
  5. Using the assistance servers will probably mean that I will have to
pay for that service. Any idea of the costs?

Marc.

Re: Map software and proprietary data.

2007-01-24 Thread Marc Verwerft

Dominik,

Something similar has already been discussed here. See
http://lists.openmoko.org/pipermail/community/2007-January/001242.html and
http://lists.openmoko.org/pipermail/community/2007-January/001084.html

From the last one I understand that Sean (in the long run) will try to make

a GPS navigation package available, given enough interest in the Neo1973 (so
he can 'convince' other companies to cooperate) and enough interest for
navigation software.

Shipping is going to be worlwide, cost is 350$ + shipping.

Marc.

Is FIC in talks with some company now? I'm sure that OSS devs will put a
fervent effort to write/adopt a free replacement and I'm sure they (we, If I
manage to get some time off) will succeed, but it's the data that matters
and I don't know of a resource of quality data that is public domain, esp.
outside of most urbanized areas of USA/Western Europe.
Getting data through GPRS could be a solution, but a largely suboptimal

BTW,
are you going to ship worldwide, will the phones be available directly in

Pictures of Neo1973 under GFDL for wikipedia

2007-01-24 Thread Marc Verwerft

Sean,

I was trying to create an article on the Wikipedia about OpenMoko. The
english version (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/OpenMoko) has a nice picture
on the left. Unfortunately this picture is licensed as 'fair use'. Which
means that it is not allowed to use it in the Dutch version and probably
also not for Italian/german/spanishportugese/...

My question to you:
can we use the pictures at the openmoko site in wikipedia (all languages)
with the permission of FIC under the GNU Free Documentation License (

That's one of the strong features of a wiki.

AFAIK the wiki is only temporary until we switch over to the official one

I would expected that the people would came to the FOSDEM to see the
OpenMoko/Neo1973 for the first time - or to save shipping cost to
get one device... but comming for a free beer?

Ok I was kidding, of course it would be fun to meet you! But
how many people of this list would go to Brussel?
BTW: We need T-Shirts till then! Anybody good graficaly ideas¹?

But Sean, when you are at the FOSDEM, do you need a table in BXL?
Look: http://www.fosdem.org/2007/booths
Many "Open..." there, but OpenMoko is still missing. When it belongs
to a missing table, I could bring one with me from Aachen.

Cheers,
rob

PS: FOSDEM would be a good place to save shipping costs,
but maybe it is a little bit early for many phones:
http://lists.openmoko.org/pipermail/announce/2007-January/00.html
But it would be great place to see the OpenMoko/Neo1973
live - right? :))

vim

to
call 7 time better:

Ough! I just can't imagine how to use emacs with this "new iphone
concept". While this "new concept" is a fine thing for a phone,
I'd like to be able to do _real_ work with it. I'm a developer, so
my main tool is emacs, but there are more tasks (e.g. email/mail)
where a kbd would be usefull. With a proper keyboard, we would have
a laptop-replacement. No way to do _real_ work with a touchscreen.

Unless I can connect a _real_ keyboard (probably via usb), I don't
need this phone. I like the concept and the idea, but... no kbd
implies no emacs... No way. Sorry.

Please note that I'm not talking about integrating a mini-keyboard
(like the original poster said). I'm just talking about the possibility
to connect an usb-keyboard.

BTW: Any new information how long we have to wait for our new toy?

Re: Gaming oportunities

2007-01-16 Thread Marc Verwerft

Hi everyone.

Ever since I 'met' the OpenMoko I wanted one. And since it has AGPS on
board, it could be even more usefull to me.
I love riding a motorcycle and was hoping that this thingy could be turned
into a TomTom rider equivalent. Meaning that I need large buttons when using
gloves.
Looks like there are already people here with a _lot_ of UI experience.
Things are looking good :-)

Marc.

hi again;

the main problem with touch screen controls is you cannot give the user
"my hands fits on this button" feeling. this feeling makes the players
comfortable about controlling the characters, etc. on th screen.
as i said before, also virrtual keypads can be used, or just touching can
be a great idea for games... we had some experiences with touchscreen
gaming, and the users mainly don't like to playimg doom-like games with a
touchscreen, they feel more comfortable with arcade style games... gamers
mostly used to a controlling device like joypads, mouse, or keyboards
nowadays. and as we experienced, gamers like the analog joysticks of
gamepads most. because it gives the feeling of really controlling the
character on the screen. but with ipod usage, people used to control simple
and touch input device... and now they like mainly no button idea. so that
this is an advantage for touch screen games. and also people nowadays like
playing arcade games on every playform (even the next-gen gaming consoles).
maybe another problem is the response time of the touch screens. this
could effect the gameplay experience.
the main problem can be the usage of the screen. this is what Nokia N-Gage
bumps onto wall. they didn't used a psp like widescreenish screen for
gaming. and this became a huge limitation for game developers. If there is a
vertical usage oportunity in games, then the games can be more attractive
for people. i want to tell you about one of my experiences. we've developed
two soccer games for mobile phones (a j2me game, not a s60 game). in the
first edition we used the screen as n-gage used, people liked the game but
in the second edition we usd the screen in vertical position. then the
number pad became like a joypad for right hand. and the area of usage became
incredibly beatiful. it triple the first edition downloads and people
returned incredibly beatiful comments to us. because there was no (maybe 1-2
more) games that uses the screen of mobile phones vertical.

sorry for the long mail :) but i'm really curious about this device. i'm
curious about the graphics capabilities, i'm curious about the shape in the
hand (as i said before, if i use it veritcal will it be comfortable in my
hand?), i'm curious about the marketing strategy of the product
(distribution of the content), and i'm curious about nearly everything about
this thing :) i'm not against of playing games on touch screens, but there
are not much examples of this kind of games in the market. with iphone i
think there will be a market for touch screen games on itunes, as i said not
too complex games, mostly arcades.

when openmoko is in the market i'll get one and trye every possibility on
it for gaming. maybe it could be a good platform for games too. because
today's mobile phones suck with gaming capabilities (in graphics and gaming
experience)
