Re: *Not* moving to Google Groups?

2006-02-02 Thread Joshua Coombs
I offer a third option, for those that prefer UseNet, news.gmane.org
provides a UseNet to listserv gateway that works REALLY well. Usenet
people can use it, web junkies the gmail web interface, and listserv
fans can use email. We all win, and we're all on the same list. Why
splinter the group if we don't have to?

I subscribed to the new list in my second mail account by sending a
blank message to [EMAIL PROTECTED], and go the
exact same message instead of a subscription confirmation. But I just
waited, and now I'm receiving messages. It looks just like an (anoying)
bug in Google Groups.

Moving to Google Groups

2006-01-30 Thread Dan Knight
After reading discussion over the weekend, let me clarify a few things.

Google Groups functions as an email group, so the format of posting and
receiving messages can be exactly the same as you're used to. In
addition, you can read, search, and reply to messages online, something
you couldn't do with our old email system.

Nobody is required to use Google/Gmail to join the list. You can use
any email address. And better yet, you can now control your own
subscription - single message mode, digest, even set it to "no email"
when you go on vacation. Or you could just read online if you prefer.

Some people are having problems posting via email, just as has been the
case with Maclaunch. Your email address has to match the subscribed one
- most list servers won't see [EMAIL PROTECTED] and [EMAIL PROTECTED] as
the same thing. If you have trouble posting, check the headers to see
how your From: and Reply-to: are configured.

There have been some objections to Google based on their willingness to
provide a restricted search engine in China (among other countries) and
abide by national laws rather than opt out of the Chinese market. If
you want to boycott Google, consider that Apple Computer, General
Motors, and most international businesses also elect to work within the
constraints of Chinese law so they can reach the Chinese market and/or
use Chinese labor.

Neither Google nor the Chinese government puts any restrictions on the
political views of participants of our email lists. We chose Google
Groups because the provide a much more flexible service with greater
user control than any of the mail list software we've run across.

Further, politics is explicity listed as an area not to be debated on
our lists, along with religion and Windows advocacy. We are building
helpful Mac communities, so we try to avoid divisive issues.

There is no "compact macs" list any longer.

Now there is only one list: vintage-macs. This combined the Compact
Mac (this list), Vintage Mac, and Quadlist from Maclaunch into one
unified list.

You want "vintage-macs-subscribe", but it looks like you've already

It wants me to create a basic Google account with email, real name, and

Is it possible to use email to a list manager address to get started?

Is it browser sensitive? I'm using iCab on OS 9.1.

I had an SE/30 up for years as an ftpd, though.

The other real issue is listserv software- mail is not the kindler
gentler internet world it used to be, and software for the old
listserv solutions is unlikely to be secure enough for use today.
Not in terms of "hacking root" on a box without root :) but in terms

Pass. Sorry.

Moving to Google Groups

2006-01-27 Thread Dan Knight
Fans of 680x0 Macs, we've successfully launched our first two email
lists using Google Groups - one for Macintel models and one for the Mac
mini.

As of this afternoon, we've turned off our three "Maclone" lists, which
have also transitioned to Google Groups.

Advantages: You can browse messages online, where they are threaded.
You can manage your subscription yourself. Lots more room for the
archive. And Google Groups doesn't automatically include your email
address in your postings.

Today we begin moving Compact Macs, Vintage Macs, and Quadlist to
Google Groups. Google Groups will not replace the current lists until
early next week, but I wanted to give everyone a chance to subscribe.

To join the list and set your mode (single messages, digest, etc.),
point your browser to http://groups.google.com/group/vintage-macs

When the list goes live, [EMAIL PROTECTED] will be the
posting address. I'm updating the Vintage Macs List FAQ to reflect
these changes.

I look forward to seeing most of you there next week.

Dan Knight, listmom
