Plusses need Torx-15 drivers to open them, and ones with pretty long
 handles.

See http://macfaq.org/hardware/misc.shtml#Q2.8.3 for the gory details.

I forget where I saw the suggestion originally, but you can also use a
Torx-15 bit wedged into the barrel of a Bic pen. It's long enough and
thin enough to reach down the wells of the handle, and if the screws are
particularly stuck, you can use pliers on the pen case to give you
enough torque to get them turning. That's what I've used on several
compact Macs, no problems.

 Sincerely,

 Ray Ingles (313) 227-2317

Does anyone really believe that terrorists can actually threaten
our survival as a nation? Killing large numbers of people is not
the same as threatening the entire country. It doesn't make sense
to restructure our entire legal system, giving up rights and
freedoms that people fought and died for, all to cut the odds
  from 0.005% to 0.003% (and that's generous). - Me

Re: opening compact macs

2005-12-24 Thread Antonio Rodríguez
I think chase refers to the hinge-like tool used to separate the two
parts of the compacts' cases. I have no need to use it, because with my
Classic I use what I call the pillow method: I remove all four screws
(with a long handle TX-15, of course ;-) ), and then place the Classic
over my bed, with the screen facing down, and gently sake it by the
handle until the upper part of the case bets loose. You only have to
take care to remove the case vertically so you don't break the CRT's neck.

Yep, I've never used a hingy-thingy in my life, and I must have opened
many hundred Compacts.

Re: opening compact macs

2005-12-24 Thread Scott Baret
I have never used a take apart tool. Here's how I've
done it for years:

1. Get a long-shafted Torx T-15 screwdriver. Sears had
these two years ago and probably still have them. The
one I bought then is a Craftsman Professional...it has
a plastic handle that is black. Sets you back about
eight bucks, which is less than that tool from eBay.

2. Put the Mac face down on a towel so you don't
scratch it. There are two screws under the handle
(that can only be reached with the long-shaft Torx)
and two at the base near the ports. On a Plus or
earlier, there is also one under the battery cover.

3. Push hard on one of the ports (I use SCSI unless
it's a pre-Plus, in which case it's the disk drive
port) to get the seperation started. Some Macs seem to
come apart better than others. Gently pull toward the
top of the Mac as well, seperating the back from the
bezel.

4. Eventually the case will come off. Some cases come
off really naturally while others kind of pop
dramatically.

5. Be careful with that CRT. There are instructions
online about how to discharge that sucker. On most SEs
(those without the old squirrel cage fan on the analog
board) and all Classics, the CRT is already
discharged. Early SEs and all Pluses and earlier Macs
need a discharge.

6. As far as your Plus, have you tried different
startup disks? I'm hoping it's just
software-realated...
