Nope. Not hyperbole, unfortunately.
That is what many people we met overseas have told us as we traveled the
past few years, including last week, again. I hadn't
Fascism: Doctrine; collection of concepts; and dictatorship by
government of a country, often involving hostile nationalistic
attitudes, racism, and private economic ownership under rigid government

I rarely carry my passport with me while traveling, except when I need
it to get through passport control. A photocopy of the photo and
information page is enough in most cases for ID, even in banks. I also
make a copy of the visa stamp in countries where they actually care
about seeing the
Don't destroy the chip.
The passport is government property. So don't even think about it.

Sorry if this has been covered before, but I just got one.
Is there anything in a passport RFID chip that I should be
concerned with, other than that some people have recommended
microwaving it to destroy the chip
Yes, it does. In many hostage situations the first thing terrorists do
is collect passports. Up to now we've been protected against blind
terrorists, but with RFID even visually impaired terrorists can tell
we're from the US!

Not to treat your concerns lightly, but if your average
kidnapper/terrorist in a third world country can't spot an American
tourist 100 yards away, he must be pretty pretty blind. I am willing to
bet money that the average 10 year old urchin in
Khartoum/Baghdad/Bogotá/Tehran/etc. could tell

I would not mess with them. You might find yourself in the airport
basement being interrogated by Dick Cheney.
Worse yet you might be invited to go bird hunting with him!

RFID chips in passports are there to make them less easily faked. I
would assume any passport that should have one but doesn't would come
under extra scrutiny- so busting it with a hammer is probably a good
way to spend extra hours in airport security.
Go for the wallet.
That's ok cause the ones afraid of Cheney are already in tin foil hats. I
still say use the hammer!

Wow--this is turning into a thriller plot. (I was more
interested in the technical questions.) The usual way
to get by if someone fingers you in unfriendly territory
as a North American tourist is to say, We're Canadian,

No need to get so high tech...a hammer will work. Or you can buy passport
wallets that block the rfid chip. As far as being concerned, real world
chance of someone getting something useful from your passport rfid?
Probably the same chance you have of winning the powerball jackpot.
