Of course, it depends on what the warning says, but it sounds like
your anti-virus program...

 Windows XP computer; Verizon DSL
Sometimes I get a popup warning from the sys tray (lower right-hand side).
What does this mean? Is a warn out ether cable a possible source?

Ya, you completely forgot to tell us what the notification is.
Presumably it's just telling you a network connection is unavailable,
which can be normal as long as it isn't the one you're using for the
internet. You should be able to right click it and go to Properties
and uncheck the box Notify me if no connection.

[CGUYS] Disable Outlook

2008-07-07 Thread Richard P.
Is there a way to prevent Outlook from running, short of uninstalling
it? The Fuji Fine Pix Viewer software defaults to Outlook when sending a
picture via email, resulting in an entirely too cumbersome process.
Before Outlook was activated, the Fuji program would use Outlook
Express, which was a much simpler process which I would like to go back
to. I haven't been able to find any way of changing the default within
the Fuji program.

It's not a fuji program problem, fuji sends a call to your os to use the

You just call the regular Comcast number - 1-800-COMCAST (I've got it
memorized I've had to call them so many times).

One of the voice mail choices is to cancel your service.

That's when the fun comes in. They'll ship you off to the Customer
Retention Department - they'll offer you lower rates to get you to
stay. I got my internet lowered to $24.95 per month for 768K up/384K
down - which is a heck of a lot better than I was getting for the $50 /
month high speed nonsense.

They'll also offer you something for your TV too in hopes of keeping
you.

Have fun with it! :-) Let us know what they offer...

Perhaps not, but they did send me my ATM card that I left in a
room last September. The same hotel also returned a watch that a
friend left on the same occasion. I think it may all come down to
the level of responsibility and honesty of the individual involved.

The day of the Oklahoma City bombing my girlfriend was at the
Washington, DC FBI building waiting for a tour. She and a couple of
her friends were sitting outside along with many other folks. After
the explosion, which was unbeknownst at the time to them, FBI
security personnel rushed out of the building and ordered everyone to
leave the area, but to leave any bags packages or parcels behind.
Attempts by persons to leave with anything other than handbags, as in
the case of women, were physically rebuffed.

My girlfriend had to leave behind her expensive SLR along with a
number of lenses, and her two friends also had to abandon their
cameras because they were in cases. No one ever saw their property
again. Numerous calls my girlfriend made to FBI in the aftermath
about her camera were all met with the same response. They knew
nothing about it, and they had taken in no cameras of any sort that
had been abandoned that day. I'd say a bunch of security folks made
out pretty well that day. For what it is worth, my girlfriend asked
if the abandoned property had been dynamically rendered harmless,
their term for blowing things up that are deemed as being potentially
dangerous. They said no and that they had no idea what had happened
to any items left that day.

[CGUYS] Can't access a computer over the network.

Computer #2 can access #1's public files but no others. And Computer # 1
cannot even see computer #2 - Access denied error # 0x80070005. As a
check, both can easily access and write files on a third computer, a
laptop running Vista, so I know the router and network are OK.

I just spent an hour and a half with the Dell advanced support who
tried fiddling with every setting he knows how; he could only suggest
reinstalling everything and see if that works (Happily, there's no
charge when the problem isn't solved).

An suggestion where to start? I especially want to be able to access #2
from #1 to set up automated backups.

Ya, you completely forgot to tell us what the notification is. Presumably
it's just telling you a network connection is unavailable, which can be normal

long as it isn't the one you're using for the internet. You should be able to
right click it and go to Properties and uncheck the box Notify me if no

Sorry about that. The notification is Local Area Connection 3. A network
cable is unplugged. As I understand it, local area connection 3 is how my
computer accesses DSL. Could the cable be defective? I used another cable but
the
problem persists.

No. You completely missed the rest of my message. I had already
assumed that was the error you were referring to.

To reiterate, Windows is just telling you there's no connection on
that device. But unless something has broken, you can safely ignore
it. Or disable the message.

What's funny is, knowing Tom's insecurity with his computer choice I knew
exactly where he was going...you've been around long enough too...you should
have known this would work to some kind of pc slam.

Well all the mac owners all have higher IQ's are better dressed, drive
faster better cars, travel in first class and also have anywhere from 3 to
16 assistance helping them remember their laptop. It's just not fair to

A Mac owner would not do this, but not so if you are lugging around a
misbehaving PC that some driod in IT decided you must have. I would not
make any effort to get it back. I would be thinking that I might get a
replacement that maybe, just maybe this time actually worked.

Even including thefts, this just doesn't sound plausible. Can anyone
find the *actual study*? Following a bunch of links they all just seem
to link to each other.

Re: [CGUYS] Can't access a computer over the network.

2008-07-07 Thread Tom Piwowar
Computer #1 cannot even see computer #2 - Access denied error # 0x80070005.

Is this correct? Access denied is a response to a connection request. I
don't see how you could get to access denied if #1 did not see #2, try
to connect, and then get told to buzz off.

An suggestion where to start? I especially want to be able to access #2
from #1 to set up automated backups.

Where I would look first is computer #2. Computer #2 should be able to
log access attempts. I don't know if logging will be on by default or if
you need to enable it. I would assume that logging is on, try to connect
from #1, and then immediately check #2's logs. Access denied should be
a serious enough event to be logged. The log entry should provide some
additional information about why access was denied.

Here it is. The study was sponsored by Dell.

http://www.dell.com/downloads/global/services/dell_lost_laptop_study.pdf

It says, Laptop loss frequencies were collected from a confidential field
survey as either a direct weekly estimate or as a range variable as reported
by airport officials. Exact loss frequencies were typically not calculated
or available for review.

In other words, it's a guess. :)

There are a million things possible, as you probably tried. Some thoughts:

1. Users access shared folders - not computers. Does every user see the
same symptoms? What if you are logged in as Administrator?

2. Are you getting password requests when you try this?

3. Do all the computers show up in your Microsoft Network?

2008-07-07 Thread David K Watson

I am also getting rid of Comcast for Verizon FIOS. I am scheduled for
Friday, July 18 for the FIOS install. Verizon told me to wait until I
was

completely sure that the FIOS install was done properly before canceling
Comcast. I figure that the weekend will be long enough for me to see if
the FIOS is working, and I will be canceling the following Monday.
I have a Comcast (dis)service center less than a mile away and will be
taking my cable box and remote there and cancel in person. I suspect
that I will have to pay out for the whole billing period, though.

Re: [CGUYS] Kernel panic Dx?

2008-07-07 Thread David K Watson

Actually, that reminds me: I recall that I got a number of
kernel panics just before my Microsoft Intellimouse Explorer
failed. The panics had to be due to the mouse because
I noticed that they always occurred after I clicked on something
after the mouse had warmed up, and the panics went away
as soon as I replaced the mouse.

Since you have so few peripherals and haven't added to the
internals, I'd say it is probably reasonable to just try running
the computer without the sync cable and trackball now, then do
the intensive and definitive test Tom mentioned if you still
get the panics.

I don't usually follow sports, but watched Wimbledon because
I was visiting my sister and her boyfriend is a sports fan. He's
a good cook and a Monty Python fan, so I was disappointed that
no blancmanges were involved.

David,

Thanks for the additional advice. I did do the extended mem test, and
then, just for anyhow, I guess, a 5-loop Rember test on Saturday. All
passed, though I know that doesn't guarantee solid hardware. The
system's pretty much as it came off the shelf, actually, these many
years ago (2001). No PCI cards, original processor; I think all I've
upgraded is the memory, and that was several years back, too. USB
Logitech trackball mouse a Palm hot sync cable on the keybd, but
that's about it. But I'm thinking just writing to CGUYS was enough to
put the fear into it, because the computer was up all weekend with
nary
a hiccup. Heh. I know, the panic irregularity suggests hardware,
too. I

was forgetting about Wimbledon when I said troubleshooting was my
weekend entertainment, so I've been lazy and haven't opened the
case. I

will try to get there soon, though.
