[CGUYS] Buying First MAC
I am planning to purchase an iMac for my wife. I have only owned PC's since jobs was in the garage, and have a few hardware questions. we are getting this mainly because it fits well in the allocated space, and because my wife generates and edits dvd's and says her PC is very slow in this task. 1.looks like 2 memory slots. does std DDR2 SDRAM (PC2-5300 ) ram fit, or is it something that is mac only? 1a. can I put a 2g in one slot and a 1g in the other and the machine will be happy and run on 3g? 2.can one change/ug the video card or add memory to it, or is it unique, and hardwired someplace weird? such as, can one remove the nvidia 128 and put in an ati 256? 3.Is the hd a standard one, and can one pull the existing and put in a larger one? 4.have heard Leapord(?) will be out in oct. how realistic are apple release dates and how buggy are typical initial releases? will there be enough thrill to wait? regards tg apologies if this dual posts, but I have tried to post this 6 times. sometimes it bounces, sometimes it is lost in the ether waves of time. * == QUICK LIST-COMMAND REFERENCE - Put the following commands in == * == the body of an email send 'em to: [EMAIL PROTECTED] == * Join the list: SUBSCRIBE COMPUTERGUYS-L Your Name * Too much mail? Re: [CGUYS] Online vs. IBM Server
Arnold, It all depends on your time and the level of effort you are willing to expend on managing your own service. (1) No matter what you use the free server for it will need to be both accessible and secure. It will need to be physically secure from someone tampering with it (like accidentally unplugging it to plug in a vacuum cleaner -- it happened to me once), accidentally or deliberately, it will need secure and reliable power (UPS) and network connections (firewall, antivirus, maybe intrusion detection). But at the same time you will need to allow authorized users into the server. This could mean some sort of VPN to allow in friendlies. (2) You will want a secure processing environment. This could be an Apache web server front end and MySQL on the backend with some custom Perl or ASP (or something) in between them. Unless you are a coder and familiar with the latest in secure programming techniques your firewall and IDS may be worthless against an SQL injection or buffer-overflow attack. (3) Don't forget heating and cooling. A single server in the basement might be okay (so long as your basement can't flood!) but more likely you will want the server in an unused closet or your office space where you may require special accommodations for air conditioning, especially if your data center includes UPS, network gear and perhaps a multi-terabit storage device. (4) You will need backups -- lots of backups to restore service when your environment crashes. You may require redundant hardware -- a second processor, dual firewalls and diverse routers and Internet connections depending on how mission critical your server is. The good news is that a reliable web hosting environment can be had that takes all these concerns into consideration. I'm not familiar with Godaddy's facility but here in Northern Virginia there are plenty of web hosting businesses that are quite reasonable, especially if you are looking to support mission critical applications. MCI's datacenter in Ashburn is pretty pricy but in addition to the physical security you also get world class Internet backbone connectivity. Bottom line: there's a hell of a lot more to setting up a secure, reliable computing environment than just getting your hands on a server and a Windows for Dummies book. My two cents... -Mike __ Michel David Lowe Purcellville, VA -Original Message- From: Computer Guys Announcements and Discussion List [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of Arnold Kee Sent: Saturday, September 08, 2007 1:29 AM To: COMPUTERGUYS-L@LISTSERV.AOL.COM Subject: [CGUYS] Online vs. IBM Server Greetings all. I'm interested in your thoughts. If you had a choice between using an online server like godaddy.com and obtaining a free standalone IBM server which would you choose? Now if the standalone is chosen, some training on managing a server would be necessary. But the training would likely be limited since the only real need for the server (in the short term) is to share files with a remote staff. Brainstorming might lead to a more robust use, but that has yet to be revealed. *by the way, I'm very happy so far with the suggestion to try the apple refurbished link Arnold [EMAIL PROTECTED] * == QUICK LIST-COMMAND REFERENCE - Put the following commands in == * == the body of an email send 'em to: [EMAIL PROTECTED] == * Join the list: SUBSCRIBE COMPUTERGUYS-L Your Name * Too much mail? So where would you recommend buying memory, instead of getting it from Crucial? Crucial shows a 2GB kit (two 1GB cards) of DDR PC2-4200 memory at $89.99 I usually hunt around a litle. Re: [CGUYS] vector vs. raster -- Mac apps
Good question. I have been wanting to take a look at the new Numbers component in iWork so... Scaling the graphic within the program proves nothing because the program could be doing whatever. So got to get the graphic out and see how it behaves. The easiest way to get the graphic out is to copy it to the clipboard. If you paste it into Photoshop you will see the 72 dpi preview. Resize it and the image breaks up raster-style. Paste the same into Preview and you'll see it behaves like a vector image. Make it large and it does not break up. Proof that Numbers gives you a vector image. Save the image from Preview as a PDF. Open that PDF in Illustrator, examine it in the Layers palette and you will see all its parts as individual units. Further proof that Numbers gives you a vector image. Based on previous promises from Apple, my guess is that it is using PDF as its graphic format. You asked about Pages. Probably works the same. To get a PDF file out of Pages you print and use the PDF button. In any program that has Print to Preview, I can create a PDF. PDF is not a Pages file. That's not the same as prepress, and it's not the same as the output file being Postscript. To complicate matters, a raster file like a TIFF, embedded in a Postscript document, makes it less scalable, i.e. all files for print should be at 100%. I've been trying to explain the difference between consumer programs like Pages and professional programs like InDesign and Quark XPress, and I keep getting the reply that the graphics are scalable, therefore the document is a vector document. Perhaps the details and eccentricities of prepress and Postscript that are complicated enough for professionals who create files for printing have too many technical details to bother to discuss with those who aren't familiar with offset printing. But it's annoying that a basic thing like vector vs. raster in the file type is getting so much resistance. Or maybe it's the attitude, I have a computer and graphics programs, therefore I'm a graphic artist. Uh, no. Guess it's a language problem. I'm getting my new Mac this afternoon--maybe. I can look at Pages after that. I didn't like Pages 1.x at all, but then, I tend compare it to Quark, InDesign and [the late] PageMaker. They are not exactly using bandwidth usage as their rationale, but instead they have seemingly instituted a 20 minute time limit for a single viewing of any video. The end result is discrimination against a class of users, that being those with dial-up connections. Most dial-up users are now limited to just about 2 minutes or so of video regardless of the actual running time of said video. Neither Google or Youtube will acknowledge this relatively new time limit implementation, yet it does exist. They do not respond to any queries along these lines. I presume they realize it could be a public relations nightmare for them to confirm its existence. Of course, Google thinks that they should be allowed to 'rule' the internet anyway because of the scope of their influence. I am not personally aware of any other internet site anywhere that imposes time limits on downloads. If Google thinks such a policy is a good thing, then I view them as being counter to all that has made the internet a fairly democratic environment in the past. [CGUYS] Replacing laptop memory

Re: [CGUYS] Replacing laptop memory
I like www.memoryx.net they seem to have a good balance between price and quality. If I purchase the very cheapest memory, I find that it often fails to work properly. Thus wasting my TIME and the time of my customers, and I end up looking like I do not know my profession. If you are a reseller, or purchase RAM frequently, MemoryX will grant you a very nice discount. I am not sure what exactly you must do to prove your status, but I guess in my case, they just looked at my past buying trends and allowed me to be in that reseller category. Re: [CGUYS] vector vs. raster -- Mac apps
In any program that has Print to Preview, I can create a PDF. PDF is not a Pages file. That's not the same as prepress, and it's not the same as the output file being Postscript. To complicate matters, a raster file like a TIFF, embedded in a Postscript document, makes it less scalable These are all different things. I usually use language precisely and if what I write isn't read precisely things can get bollixed up. PostScript means that it conforms to the Red Book standard -- no more. I wrote nothing about PDF-X and related pre-press standards. That is entirely another ball of wax. The PDF button in OS X.4 does offer an option to create a PDF-X. Earlier versions did not. PostScript can contain both vector and raster elements. So can PDF-X, but there are further requirements. Examining a PDF in Illustrator's Layers palette will show you if the document is pure vector or contains both vector and raster elements. The file I created was pure vector. I expect certain graphic effects could introduce some raster elements. * == QUICK LIST-COMMAND REFERENCE - Put the following commands in == * == the body of an email send 'em to: [EMAIL PROTECTED] == * Join the list: SUBSCRIBE COMPUTERGUYS-L Your Name * Too much mail? I am planning to purchase an iMac for my wife. I have only owned PC's since jobs was in the garage, and have a few hardware questions. we are getting this mainly because it fits well in the allocated space, and because my wife generates and edits dvd's and says her PC is very slow in this task. 1.looks like 2 memory slots. does std DDR2 SDRAM (PC2-5300 ) ram fit, or is it something that is mac only? 1a. can I put a 2g in one slot and a 1g in the other and the machine will be happy and run on 3g? Yes you can use a 2 gig plus a 1 gig. On the memory, just make sure you check what the specs on the machine say and PC RAM should be the same. 2.can one change/ug the video card or add memory to it, or is it unique, and hardwired someplace weird? such as, can one remove the nvidia 128 and put in an ati 256? Whichever video you start with is the video you will end with. 3.Is the hd a standard one, and can one pull the existing and put in a larger one? Yes, it is a standard SATA drive. 4.have heard Leapord(?) will be out in oct. how realistic are apple release dates and how buggy are typical initial releases? will there be enough thrill to wait? Yes on the memory although for video editing I would suggest maxing it out , maybe, maybe not on the HD ( look here for some details : http://www.xlr8yourmac.com/systems/intel_imac_take-apart.html ) no on the video card. This is why when you go to a recording studio or a video editing house the iMacs are on the receptionists desks and the Powermacs are in the editing suites. From http://www.apple.com/imac/technology/storage.html Each iMac model comes with at least with 1GB of RAM in the form of a single SO-DIMM module in one of the two easily accessible memory slots, which means it¹s a breeze to add more memory as your needs change. Re: [CGUYS] Comcast bandwidth
Comcast is cutting off customers who use too much bandwidth. Only, they won't tell you how much is too much, nor will they tell you how to monitor your bandwidth use. Well, as I see it it depends on the terms of service agreement, if it says they can then they can. Comcast is a business, which happens to depend on a technology that is based on a head end distribution model. If your demand among shared users on the head end bandwidth is excessive with regard to particular users, then it makes technical sense to deny those users access based on the needs of the many as opposed to the demands of the few. All they have to do is justify it with regards to the terms of service agreement. But if they have no enforceable terms of service, and in fact promised unlimited access, then they are on shaky ground. Cable is somewhat unregulated, and any business operating without an enforceable contract with the end user is at liberty to terminate service without prior notification. But I stress that if they promised unlimited service and failed to deliver, they are in breach of an implicit contract. It's not true that phone company DSL is independent of bandwidth saturation. But it appears so from the individual user perspective, because the phone company only promised a 3 Mbps (depending) connection, and the terms of service are crystal clear. You can run all day at that speed, remote servers permitting, and you won't be cut off. As long as you pays your bill. Once the DSLAM is maxed out on either the subscriber side or the network side it's time to build out. Yes cable is faster (but not faster than FiOS). But the increased speed is bought at the expense of head end (shared) bandwidth. And that is the bottom line. Cable internet access is great, no question that under normal use it beats DSL in speed. But the technology model pretty much means that the heavy users grab everyone else's bandwidth. * == QUICK LIST-COMMAND REFERENCE - Put the following commands in == * == the body of an email send 'em to: [EMAIL PROTECTED] == * Join the list: SUBSCRIBE COMPUTERGUYS-L Your Name * Too much mail? Operating systems contain internal tables with entities called sockets (this may be the same table, or a similar table to the one for open files). Each open network connection (from a particular YouTube server to a particular client) uses up an entry in this table. The table size is determined by available memory and a few other factors. If a bunch of people with dial-up connections tried downloading, they would each be using up entries in this table, and for a longer period of time. Some servers may be set to limit this amount of time simply to prevent Denial Of Service (DOS) attacks, or just to make more efficient use of server resources. Does anyone on the list have any experience with Comcast's Triple Play - voice, video and Internet bundle? Re: [CGUYS] iPod cases
I use this case from Belkin http://catalog.belkin.com/IWCatProductPage.process?Product_Id=367153. It is really tough with a rubber back and a thick clear plastic front. It will take a 30GB or a 60GB There is a hole which is just big enough for the sync/charger cable at the bottom and two on the top for jack and hold button. It is a pain in the butt to get the iPod out of it but you should not need to often. The other problem I had with it is that the screw that holds the case on the belt loop pulls out and it fell off my belt. Super glue fixed that. I also had the face get scratched up so I am on my second one but one of the screen covers would protect the case as well as the screen. I'm fairly hard on this stuff but this one has survived over a year and the iPod still looks like new. It spends most of its time clipped into a bag, slipped into a jacket pocket, or sitting on a table. I charge it via USB (no dock) and also plug a Griffin iTalk microphone into it several times a week and would prefer a case that allow me to do so without de-casing it. Any suggestions please? cb * == QUICK LIST-COMMAND REFERENCE - Put the following commands in == * == the body of an email send 'em to: [EMAIL PROTECTED] == * Join the list: SUBSCRIBE COMPUTERGUYS-L Your Name * Too much mail? Re: [CGUYS] Comcast bandwidth
This shows that it is once again time to enforce the anti-trust laws. Split Comcast and the others up. P.S. Anyone advertising unlimited bandwith is prima facie guilty of consumer fraud. Comcast management ought to be thrown into a dark deep dungeon for an unlimited period of time. Amen, Tom! I am on comcast and have noticed a decided slowdown in my internet access. I often have one or two web cams going and am streaming internet radio while I work...and surf the web too. Lately I've had a lot of starts and stops in the streams and sl opening of pages. I wish we had competition too. Re: [CGUYS] Replacing laptop memory
That's worth whatever typical nominal extra cost there is to me. Jeff can't afford a Mac because he wasted his budget paying too much for RAM. Here's a nice disclaimer from Tom's vendor: FREE USPS SHIPPING: applies only to orders which are placed online. There is no minimum order amount for the free USPS shipping. Average delivery is 3-7 business days but this is only an average and some locations may take longer. **If your order gets lost, there is no insurance and DMS takes no responsibility for packages which are lost by the United States Postal Service.** Even funnier Tom, is that RAM for one of my home mobos is as follows: ASUS K8V: 1 GB ECC, PC3200, 1 stick: MemoryX: $89 DMS: $93 (Tom's vendor) Crucial: $80 Here's another that I just bought last week: Dell GX520, 1 GB Non-ECC, PC-4200 MemoryX: Didn't carry RAM for the very popular GX series, which is odd. DMS: $49.50 Crucial: $42 (I get a small discount off of that price) I guess I'll have to take back what I said about Tom's cheap-o RAM; it costs more. I've used Crucial for years, even in the servers I've built, in use every day for years. Zero problems. Crucial ships by a trackable shipper, usually UPS or FedEx. * == QUICK LIST-COMMAND REFERENCE - Put the following commands in == * == the body of an email send 'em to: [EMAIL PROTECTED] == * Join the list: SUBSCRIBE COMPUTERGUYS-L Your Name * Too much mail?
