Re: [CGUYS] possible eBay scam: what to do?
I thought ebay had some sort of resolution process (or have they off loaded all of that to paypal?) Robert wrote: I purchased a software program from a Buy it Now sale at an eBay store. The seller didn't accept Paypal, but only personal checks, cashier's checks, and direct wire transfer. I seem to recall that you can actually put a stop on a cashiers check, but it is not free. You can see if the check has been presented for payment yet. Re: [CGUYS] CompUSA is dead. Long live Micro Center!
Never seen one, probably never will. I really enjoyed browsing in CompUSA back in the early days of the internet. Now I tend to shop first at Newegg and Pricewatch. The DIY section of Micro Center puts CompUSA to shame. It's like comparing the hardware section at Target with Home Depot. They also had plenty of sales people on the floor, unlike CompUSA. We'll see how that is in another 6 months. I tend to spend my money at Newegg as well, but there is something to be said for seeing an item with your eyes and being able to handle it. The Zalman CPU coolers are about 3 times the size I thought they were from the pics online. Prices are mostly competitive there from what I saw, YMMV. Picked up a Samsung 20x Lightscribe DVD +- burner for $35, for my HTPC/DVR project. In this case, once you take shipping costs and ship time, it's worth the couple extra bucks to get it in-hand today. * == QUICK LIST-COMMAND REFERENCE - Put the following commands in == * == the body of an email send 'em to: [EMAIL PROTECTED] == * Join the list: SUBSCRIBE COMPUTERGUYS-L Your Name * Too much mail? This would be a sign that the cable provided knows it is running out of bandwidth and is trying various tricks to keep things from getting b This is pretty much what I had thought, too, and I called them and asked about it. I just checked the DSL speed and it was 962 down...and less than a minute later it was 2280 down. But no matter what, the cable is staying 4 times faster or more even tho it too varies widely. Now, I do pay a lot more for the cable$25/mo for the DSL and $49/mo for Comcast but the speed matters to me. In TCP, data which doesn't arrive at the destination (or arrives in corrupted form) must be transmitted. Every so often, each side will transmit an acknowledgement of what data has been successfully received by that side of the connection. If no acknowlegement of a piece of data is received within a certain amount of time, the sender of that data assumes it has been lost or corrupted, and must be retransmitted. It's this time spent waiting for an acknowledgement (ACK) and the repeated transmission of the lost block of data that lowers the effective bandwidth of your connection. Note: I _think_ that TCP only uses positive acknowledgement, and simply relies on the same timeout mechanism for both lost and corrupted data... i.e. it doesn't actually send a NAK when data is received but found to be currupted. Re: [CGUYS] possible eBay scam: what to do?
That was my one learning mistake. Since then no vendor who does not deal with paypal. I have had to file a few charge backs with Paypal and they have come through like a trooper. (There process is difficult but it is effective) Ebay offers nothing for a bad vendor. My biggest complaint with them. I feel that they could do more to prevent scams like this but they claim to be the middle person. 9Raed the only one who profits!) My feeling is for people who use Ebay like a business they should be required to have a business license that can generate funds that would be used to help fleeced customers when one goes belly up. They generate enough profit they need to generate more good will. Stewart At 05:58 PM 12/18/2007, you wrote: I reject non-paypal vendors automatically. On Dec 18, 2007 5:51 PM, Rev. With the credit card you have a LOT of rights with respect to undelivered or unsatisfactory merchandise. While credit cards cost something (3% or more) to process, and not everyone can get a merchant account (particularly not mail order houses because of the large number of charge-backs), Paypal is an alternative. I would be very suspicious of any commercial enterprise that does not accept Paypal, and would not deal with one. In fact, I doubt I would deal with an individual who does not accept paypal. Of the alternatives only personal checks are not expensive to the buyer, but many sellers will hold personal checks for 10 days to 2 weeks (sometimes more) to wait for them to clear. (I believe there are some Federal Trade Commission rules on this. www.ftc.gov ) I make a point of not dealing with mail order houses that do not accept credit cards. To be safe, before sending money I emailed the request for payment from the seller to spoof at eBay, and they verified that it was legitimate. Then I sent a cashier's check. Today I received a message from eBay saying that the store has been removed from eBay. The 100% positive rating has dropped to 68%. Time hasn't run out yet on expectation of receiving the software, but is there any way to recoup my loss in case I never see the software? * == QUICK LIST-COMMAND REFERENCE - Put the following commands in == * == the body of an email send 'em to: [EMAIL PROTECTED] == * Join the list: SUBSCRIBE COMPUTERGUYS-L Your Name * Too much mail? Re: [CGUYS] CompUSA is dead. Long live Micro Center!
I like to pick over the returns table at the Fairfax VA one. Sometimes you can get some thing really useful for not to much. Re: [CGUYS] possible eBay scam: what to do?
I always look at feedback for the seller. Also look at how long they have been on Ebay. A relative newcomer with a 100% feedback is not reliable. But feedback less than %100 is also not reliable you need to read what the complaints have been. Very often they are from a very stupid or ungracious ebayer. I had one buyer recently accuse me of sending used merchandise. Since I had not opened the carton to check, I refunded the money, but I did ask for it to be shipped back so I might get back some of my money. They did not comply but I also did not ding them with a bad rating. Stewart At 06:35 PM 12/18/2007, you wrote: Never buy anything except by credit card. Rev. Stewart A.
