Yes, I had some external drives that were FAT that I neglected to
reformat to HFS+. That was ugly.

No, I'm finding the problem with HFS+ drives and USB2. Switch the same
drive to FireWire and the copy zips along.

You're right about the USB. I have a new USB2 terabyte drive that keeps
choking and stalling when I use TimeMachine, and just about anything
else for back up. I was going to use it for video, but now I don't think
so. I'm considering putting it in a FW case. Kind of a waste of a new
drive case. It's a Seagate that's quiet and looks kind of nice too.

It was NTFS when I got it. Tried FAT32 to use with peecees. Now it's
HFS+. Maybe it's the drive and not the case?

D'oh! I can't understand why I didn't get this immediately. Any moron should
be able to understand that when someone says

"I just read that Win 7 will come with rights to
downgrade to XP. Nobody is asking about Vista."

their point was that XP's EOL date has been pushed back.

But for some reason I read it as something similar to "I just read that the
government is planning to hold a presidential election every four years,"
and so I had trouble parsing the obvious meaning.

How did I get to be so thick?

I have tried to sue the 16GB drive to move large files (video etc.)
from computers but have given up. It will not take sustained writing
of large files. It is a Kingston (normally a reliable brand) and it
just cannot do it.

Technically, the FAT32 format of the drive can't handle files larger

If you are not sure then why do you feel compelled to chime in with
something irrelevant?

If you can keep the bile from going to your brain and pay attention, the
story is that despite XP's EOL date being this month, MS is expanding
downgrade rights to allow computer makers to ship PCs that have been
pre-downgraded from Win7 to XP.

That is news.

This means that XP's EOL date must be moved far into the future.

That is news too.

He wanted a BIG system (desktop replacement) as he wanted a full size keyboard.

Many 17" laptop's use a full size type keyboard, (complete with number key pad)

You mentioned that the last one (Laurie?) got a HP. I noticed that G

That looks fishy to me. (there are much better laptops out there than HP)

I have read, but have not personally tried this: You can simply move the
OpenOffice folder that is in Program Files from one computer to another.

> Nobody is asking about Vista.

I just noticed this one. It looks like you are getting your MS news from
AppleInsider, which is not necessarily a good thing.

The policy AI is talking about is not new, has nothing to do with XP or
Vista, and is not exclusive to HP as the article implies. Volume licensing
customers and OEMs have routinely had downgrade rights to ANY previous
version of Windows. The main reason for this is so that corporate IT does
not have to support multiple versions until it decides to upgrade everyone
to a new version.

As for the bit about "Nobody is asking about Vista": as far as I can tell,
you're just making that up. What is your source for this?
