I do not buy my dress pants at Walmart either.

But it is a BS comparison.

A decent pair of dress pants will run between 30-55.00

I used to work clothing retail and the mark up is awful.

Plus what is not stated is very often they are made at the same plant
on the same line just with a few different labels.

Is that Ralph Lauren Polo shirt really worth 70?

I can buy a comparable quality shirt at Lands End for 29.

Men's shop dress pants $80. After 10 years of heavy use still look good.

It is just like the Mac vs. PC comparison.

This is a somewhat recent phenomenon. I've worked on several newspapers
and have done work for magazines and books. Newspaper headlines were
edited carefully just as was the copy. Staff would sit around and
consider stories to go into the next issue and discuss both the stories
and the best headers, often honing some excellent double entendres.

Editors, if there are any who haven't been fired, either aren't as well
prepared or don't have the time to be more careful with their headlines.
Copy--instead of being proofed by a proofreader and editor--is put
through a spell checker, most of which make horrendous mistakes. As long
as the readers don't care or demand quality, or pay for quality, it
won't be there.

Who can spell or compose a sentence in the world of tweets anyway? Does
nuance matter? It does to some of us. Would be nice if more news sources
were as carefully edited as the Financial Times or the Economist,
whether on not you agree with their news slant. NYT used to be. WaPo is
better. Baltimore Sun was one of the best until the Chicago Tribune set
its vampires on it.

Bing vs. Google is not the choice. Use whichever works and switch back
and forth. One is not enough. Monocultures are bad, in biology and in
computing. Neither search engine should "win", or we [users] lose. Vive
la différence!

Nope. OSX doesn't have this problem with their deffective product because
they have very little share. OS X works great, looks great and is extremely
costly for me. I haven't had a problem with malware etc in years, so the
benefit of OSX for it's extra cost for me is zero. I may when someone like
my mom replaces her PC, get her a mac...although I may not since she has had
no problem. People want to buy a mac, spend that extra money so they won't
have to worry about malware etc I say great for them, macs are great
machines.

Yes, with nearly 10 percent of the market to Google's 70%, I'd say the
headline is accurate. After all, every time Apple market pushes 5% to
MS's 90%, you proclaim the end of MS.

Just how big does a company need to be to be able to treat it's customers
this way and get away with it? There really is nowhere else for these
players to go for the same experience. Knowing MS's track record for crap
DRM checks like Genuine Advantage, it's safe to say a good portion of these
users are perfectly legal. MS seems to be trying hard to kill it's xbox.

Moto has decided to get going while the getting is good -- they are
looking to sell off the unit that makes the Driod.

"The company, which posted losses of more than $4 billion last year,
is betting on a series of smart phones based on Google Inc.’s Android

This is not exactly a vote of confidence, is it?

Re: [CGUYS] IPv4 Exhaustion Counter

2009-11-11 Thread Ellen Rains Harris

I agree, because I have been guilty of such in the past.

At one point it was cheaper for me to get individual IP addresses than it
was to get a router-firewall to map them.

Silly, especially since the hardware has gotten both cheaper and better

Somebody ought to be looking at assigned, but unused IPs. I commonly see
ISPs providing customers with multiple static IPs when they really need
only one or would do fine with a dynamic IP. I won't believe that there
is really a shortage until I see an annual fee assessed per IP address
where people get a real bill that lists their IPs and the charge. What is
essentially free tends to get wasted.

I use a PC because they are cheap and I need to be able to use what they buy

since I am at the end of the PC pass down chain.

If memory serves IPV6 is good to go. It is the effort to make the
switch that is delaying it. (Disclaimer: I am not a network guru, but I
do follow the tech press.) I also wonder what the motivation is for the
internet service providers to make any effort?

Thank you,

Does anybody know what the hold-up is with IPv6? Did they over
engineer it or is that task of switching over more work than the
community will bear?

That's a hard one. If Cheney were still running the show I'm sure we

With the current namby-pamby administration I don't know.
