[CGUYS] Upgrade MS Office from 2003 to Office 2007
On a Windows XP computer I need to upgrade from MS Office 2003 to Office 2007. Everything I read on the web says to uninstall 2003 first, then install 2007. That's relatively easy, BUT how do I preserve all my contact information, calendar and notes in Outlook ? Is it all in a file called filename.pst ? Or has the name changed for 2007? Thanks for any advice on this process... Phil M. * ** List info, subscription management, list rules, archives, privacy ** ** policy, calmness, a member map, and more at http://www.cguys.org/ ** *

Re: [CGUYS] WiFi stumbler for Macs
I just returned from several wifi training classes at Macworld, San Francisco. Our instructor said that KisMAC is so powerful that it is illegal to have it on your computer in Germany. I am still trying to figure out the inner workings of it myself. He also demonstrated how to use an advanced antenna with a 30db gain to get all wifi signals in a 12 mile radius, log them, look for the key words USER, PASSWORD, LOG IN very scary. KisMAC leaves no sign whatsoever that anyone has intercepted your data stream. Solution is to use WPA2 or VPN to protect your privacy. I USED to think the range of a wireless Access Point was limited to 100 or 150 feet. And that someone had to be within that range to snoop. Now I know better and will act differently with all my customers. http://kismac.de/ Phil Marchetti Burtonsville, MD 20866 On Jan 22, 2008, at 1:40 PM, b_s-wilk wrote: MacStumbler doesn't work on my MacBook. Re: [CGUYS] cloning iMac drive
Gerald, I'd say to get an external FireWire hard drive either 400 or 800MHz transfer speed. Forget the USB drives that you have as backup drives for your Mac, use FW. Use the USB drives for other things. I have not had a chance to evaluate Time Machine that comes with OS 10.5 So, I'd say... Get software called SuperDuper, set the schedule for every day or every week and you will have a clone (and a complete backup) with minimum fuss, and high reliability. SuperDuper is $28 http://www.shirt-pocket.com/ A good FW drive from OWC is a good thing. http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/firewire/on-the-go A compact (no power adapter needed) 160GB 5400 RPM is $150 and has FW 400 + USB 2.0 ! Hard to beat and I have dozens of them running all over DC on my customers Mac's. I use the default schedule of 9:30PM on most of them. Phil Marchetti Mac PC consultant for over 15 years. Re: [CGUYS] Replacing laptop memory
I like www.memoryx.net they seem to have a good balance between price and quality. If I purchase the very cheapest memory, I find that it often fails to work properly. Thus wasting my TIME and the time of my customers, and I end up looking like I do not know my profession. If you are a reseller, or purchase RAM frequently, MemoryX will grant you a very nice discount. I am not sure what exactly you must do to prove your status, but I guess in my case, they just looked at my past buying trends and allowed me to be in that reseller category. Re: [CGUYS] Change in Terminology
Arnold, If you are anywhere near Rockville, MD, bring in your sick Mac and ask for Lorin Evans. The Washington Apple Pi computer club conducts a clinic every Tuesday evening from 7 to 9PM. It is staffed by (knowledgeable) volunteers and you pay by the hour with a donation to the club at whatever rate you can afford. (Suggested rate is around $25 per hour). http://www.wap.org/clinic/default.html I am one of the volunteers there. Re: [CGUYS] Powerless Powerbook
John, You can take it to a Genius Bar if you have an Apple store near where you live, or you can take it to a Mac dealer. I have no clue where you live, but if convenient to Rockville, MD, you can bring it to the Washington Apple Pi Clinic on any Tuesday evening from 7PM to 9PM they can diagnose it for a small donation. THE VARIABLES are AC power source, AC adapter, the battery, there are also some charging circuits in the laptop. I am guessing that the battery is bad. One way to prove that, is to remove the battery, plug in the AC power adapter (brick) if it runs, then the battery has gone bad.
