Many thanks for the help... I was reassured about buying a Brother
product (reviews online were quite mixed) and went with a
reconditioned Brother HL-5250DN for $100 + 5 tax, free shipping from
Newegg.

Don't forget to report back to us about how it works out.
I realize you have moved on and bought another printer, but some might
be interested in the deal Costco is offering on the Brother MFC
8660DN. It offers duplexing and networkability. I just saw it in
their Sterling Virginia store for $285 - it was formerly $400. Their
website still offers it

Setting up a Brother printer can be hair raising. To get the low price
they have cobbled together a bunch of open source software for the
printer's controller and the documentation is slim. So if you are good

ethernet to the router, USB to the Airport, or either to the
physically closest Mac (an iMac in my case)?
Ethernet to the router is easiest because there are fewer variables to
worry about simultaneously. I usually do this
I'd appreciate some advice:
I want to buy a relatively inexpensive, monochrome laser printer for
very light duty in a home office with three Macs networked via a

$99. While I do not have my Brother printer networked, a friend of mine
bought
That is what I have, works great.

This seems to have replaced the 2070N. They are pretty good printers
and so far reliable.
HP's have been great too, but their entry level networked printer is
much higher.
For the price you cant really go wrong.
