I made the mistake of using iMovie instead of Final Cut. Do I need to start
over? Is there an export setting that works? So far, after trying
to export 3 times, they all look terrible, but original video looks excellent, even
on a 42" TV.

iMovie is not a mistake. Many podcast producers use iMovie because it can get
the job done much faster. It should be perfectly fine for YouTube.

You did not provide enough detail to judge what you problem really is.

Video is full size DV, 768x5.. SD.

Camera, Canon Elura.

File size, ~3.5GB.

Duration ~16 min.

I usually make these competition videos both iPhone size and DVD video.
Haven't posted competitions on YouTube before. I've already added
chapter markers, but if I export to QT those will probably disappear and
I'll have to split the video again. Oh, no, does this mean I have to RTFM!!

Betty,
I use an old version of iMove to edit the video I place on
YouTube and have had no problems.

The Youtube encoding Help seems to start around
http://www.google.com/support/youtube/bin/answer.py?answer=55744 .

In general, you want to encode to .mp4 640X480 *progressive* (this may
be wrapped in a .mov on the Mac, I dunno). Unless there's a lot of
fast movement, you can save a lot of file size by using a lower
bitrate, maybe 4mbps or even lower.
http://www.google.com/support/youtube/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=132460

Note that the first thing Youtube does is re-encode your video to
Flash (7 I think). Sometimes this just looks awful no matter what you
do. If that's the case you may want to try a different service like
Vimeo instead. I'm not sure what Vimeo's reencoding to but it often
seems to give better quality. They've got a nice compression settings
page which you should read anyway. If you're really into it, be sure
to read the tutorials linked at the bottom.

In fact, just yesterday I was looking into obtaining a different ISP.
Even if my ISP is not directly at fault in my case, they are not going
to go to bat for me by trying to find out why this situation is
happening. Indeed, they tried to suggest that I switch to broadband

that line is the cable provider that has the monopoly in Fairfax
County.

He was making the same assumption that you seemed to make initially,
that being that I am particularly interested in Youtube videos. That
is not the case at all. I was not pursuing the causes of my truncated
downloads because I am hung up on Youtube, but rather because the
entire situation mystified me. Another question I would have is this:
If it is Youtube and Google videos today, what content provider will
have their data being throttled tomorrow?

Re: [CGUYS] Youtube videos

i would have been surprised if the tech knew what NN was. And with comcast
doing what they are doing with their unlimited bandwith customers, I think
the only binding agreement we have with our ISP's is that we will continue
to pay through the nose and receive little to no innovation...and then when
we use the bandwith we buy, we'll be shut down.

My ISP has informed me that while they do not have any restrictions
of any sort placed upon any of their customers in terms of bandwidth
usage, there could be other limitations being imposed by the entities
that provide the wholesaling of content that my ISP "buys" from them.
Or, Youtube itself is placing limits upon the availability of their
data based upon a range of certain IP addresses, primarily those that
serve to "wholesale" data to ISPs, either of which could explain my
recent problems in being able to view longer videos online.

My ISP tech informed me today that this practice is increasing, and
that if I remain on dial-up, I should expect to see even more
limitations being imposed in the near future. I asked him if this all
had to do with any aspects of 'net neutrality' and he said it had more
to do with business. I think the two are intertwined and, in a way,
are two ways of saying the same thing.
