I have the same problem, only 896Meg,with the older GeForce 3 (straight up) 64Meg.
I'll test with a GeForce 2 MX with 32 Meg.

Well it works for me. I use gimp-1.3 everyday (including the font
tool). Sounds like it could it be a specific font causing the crash.
