The issue has not been addressed AT ALL, much less "satisfactorily." Calling
someone a hypocrite WITHOUT A SHRED OF EVIDENCE is nothing by juvenile
name-calling and hasn't a damn thing to do with 'telling it like it is.'
However, I'm glad you jumped in here Teo10 or whatever... YOU point out the
inconsistency between what I say and what I do... Ball's in your court... jump on
it..

Discussion of the Bible WHEN IT IS USED TO PROSELYTIZE, OR ARGUE BELIEFS, AND OR
FAITH IS NOT APPROPRIATE FOR THIS LIST.

Then maybe you should remind your pal Kris of this rule... I certainly have not
violated it.. If so, show me where I used the bible to proseliytize... nor have I
urged anyone to believe it.. What I said was that calling something a "sin"
requires a bit more than mere personal opinion, and that the Southern people in
the mid 1800's looked to the bible as their source for determining right and
wrong.. If that isn't a fact, then YOU produce evidence to the contrary.. This is
beginning to sound like a broken record...

Using the Bible in arguing CONSPIRACY THEORY is acceptable, or to try and
support ideas that are related to conspiracy theory.

Have you reminded Kris of this rule? Where is this rule posted? Did you make it
up just now?

You want to argue religious conspiracy, like how Paul, formerly known as Saul,
becomes the chief proponent of "Christianity" and an Apostle when he never met
the Lord, and worked so much evil against the nascent church, that is okay.
You want to argue how Paul's writing contradict those of Jesus on a number of
points, or perhaps how he seemed to have many friends in Rome and may not have
suffered as he would have everyone believe, that is okay too. Arguments that
point out Paul's reliance upon the Mystery religions, such as Mithras and
Attis worship for the main forms of religious expression in "Christianity"
 would also be acceptable.

Stupid, but anything goes...

These are only examples of course, and many others would also have equal
validity as things that might require the Bible to support the position. No
proselytizing is allowed, so questions of faith and belief are not acceptable.

blah, blah, blah give me a break!

The reason that Kris is going into the Bible himself is that he is trying to
illustrate the hypocrisy of Hawk in his statements regarding slavery.

And, I might add, he's doing a piss poor job... He hasn't found a singe passage or
verse ... and neither will you... Prove me wrong.

[CTRL] The Black Market for Weapons Components

1999-01-15 Thread Agent Smiley

 -Caveat Lector-

The black market in weapons components
  http://www.phillynews.com/programs/aprint
Profiteers try to sell to anyone willing to pay -- terrorists or
  roguestates. First of four parts.
  http://www.phillynews.com/inquirer/99/Jan/10/front_page/NUKE10.htm
By Steve Goldstein PHILADELPHIA INQUIRER STAFF WRITER
MOSCOW -- On Sept. 7, the Finance and Customs Department in
  Istanbul,Turkey,
made an arrest that should have been reason for rejoicing.
Turkish agents arrested eight men on charges of smuggling nuclear
  material
from the former Soviet Union. Posing as buyers, the agents seized
about12
pounds of uranium 235 and one-quarter ounce of plutonium powder.
  Thematerial
was being peddled for $1 million by three men from Kazakstan, one from
Azerbaijan, and four from Turkey. One suspect was a colonel in the
  Kazakarmy.
While the seizure kept nuclear material out of the hands of rogue
statesor
terrorists, the incident was hardly reassuring news to the
  worldwidefraternity
of nuclear-proliferation specialists. To them, the case suggested
thatthe
world's "loose nukes" nightmare scenario of the early 1990s hadreturned.
The fact that thieves were able to smuggle uranium and plutonium out
ofthe
former Soviet Union and offer it for sale to the highest bidder
onceagain
raised the specter of terrorists -- or an outlaw nation -- detonating a
primitive nuclear device. Those fears had subsided in recent years asthe
United States spent more than $2.5 billion to contain the nuclear threat
unleashed by the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991.
Now, after an apparent hiatus in confirmed diversions of nuclearmaterial
from the former Soviet Union, disturbing new incidents have surfaced.
From
small-time hustlers to organized-crime figures, there are
  sustainedattempts by
profiteers to obtain and sell nuclear material to anyone willing to
  payfor it.
Many nuclear experts say the proliferation threat is greater now than
  inrecent
years. They say deepening economic and political upheaval in Russia has
increased the likelihood that financially desperate specialists
  withaccess to
nuclear material will be tempted to sell it, or that security at
nuclearsites will continue to corrode as fast as the beleaguered economy.
In fact, Russia is perhaps more politically volatile now than in
theearly
1990s, with troubling implications for nuclear security:
At least 3,000 unpaid and disillusioned Russian scientists withexpertise
in weapons of mass destruction have left the country in the last
  sevenyears,
according to U.S. intelligence estimates. Some have gone to roguenations
trying to build nuclear-weapons programs, such as North Korea,
Libya,Iran and Iraq. The continuing exodus prompted Graham T. Allison, a
  Harvardproliferation
expert, to conclude two years ago that the likelihood of a nucleardevice
exploding in the United States has actually increased since the end
ofthe Cold War.Security at many Russian nuclear facilities is porous,
  despiteU.S.-supplied
equipment and expertise, according to some proliferation experts. U.S.
officials estimate that only a quarter of the uranium and plutonium
atsuch
facilities is adequately secured. Eighty percent of the
  facilitiescovered by a
U.S. security program do not even have portal monitors to detect nuclear
  material carried through their gates.
There is evidence that Iraqi and Iranian purchase agents are
  activelyseeking
nuclear technology and material inside Russia, according to MatthewBunn,
a
  proliferation expert at Harvard.
Some Russian nuclear-research institutes do not have heat or properly
  functioning computers.
Russia's top customs official acknowledges that only about a quarter
ofthe
country's 300 border crossings have adequate equipment to thwart nuclear
  smuggling.
Moscow's central authority is dissipating, salaries are not being
paid,and
official corruption is endemic -- creating conditions conducive
  tosmuggling nuclear materials.
"The economic crisis in Russia is the world's No. 1
proliferationproblem,"
said William C. Potter, a leading expert on nuclear smuggling. "I
  don'tbelieve
the United States fully appreciates the implications of this crisis
forcontrol of nuclear materials and technical know-how."
Potter, who heads the Center for Nonproliferation Studies, a
  privateresearch
institute in Monterey, Calif., recently returned from an inspection
tripof
five Russian nuclear sites. He said he found security equipment that
hadnever been installed, highly enriched uranium transported on a
  canvas-toppedtruck,
and guards who disconnected security sensors after a series of
falsealarms. "The situation is desperate," Potter said.
In a report written Dec. 2, he added: "Not only are the guards
  typicallyvery
young, poorly paid, and often without adequate food and heat, but . .

[CTRL] Sting Implicates Mafia in Nuclear Components Black Market

4. Sting unravels stunning Mafia plot
  http://www.phillynews.com/inquirer/99/Jan/12/front_page/NUKE12.htm
Third of four parts By Jeffrey Fleishman
   INQUIRER STAFF WRITER
ROME -At a little past noon last Feb. 10, an undercover agent with a
graying mustache entered the Cafe de Paris on Via Veneto, a block
fromthe
American Embassy. Shaded by magnolias, the cafe is ideal for clandestine
criminal meetings; radio and satellite waves beaming from the
embassycreate static on police eavesdropping equipment.
The police agent, posing as an Egyptian businessman, ordered
  anespresso and
waited.A few minutes later, two mafiosi arrived at the cafe intent
on
selling theagent a 28-inch-long cylinder containing a 190-gram bar of
enriched uranium. The Italian Mafia, infamous for money laundering and
drug-running, was branching into nuclear smuggling.
A Sicilian dressed in a blazer did most of the talking. Soon theagent
was surrounded by several other men - including a known mob assassin -
allwith semiautomatic pistols inside their jackets.
``At the first meeting both sides are very alert, nervous,'' theagent
said later. ``You feel a moment of danger run through things. They study
you, trying to unmask identity. It is not like a movie. There are no
second
takes. You only have one chance to get it right.
``I had to convince them I was the kind of guy who would buy abomb.''
This nuclear tale began unfolding months earlier, when a
Mafiaturncoat
tipped an Italian prosecutor about a stockpile of uranium the mob
  waspeddling.
The case - which officials first regarded as a hoax - turned seriouswhen
the Mafia boasted of possessing a laundry list of radioactive
  materials,including
eight missiles from the former Soviet Union. Authorities quicklyfinessed
a
sting called Operation Gamma, depositing millions of dollars in a
  Swissbank
account and giving one detective a Geiger counter and a crash course
innuclear physics. What they uncovered stunned them: An organized-
crime
  syndicate not
only hadmanaged to obtain nuclear material but also was boldly trying to
sell it toanyone willing to pay $112 million.
The case opened a frightening new chapter in nuclear
  proliferation.For the
first time, authorities documented a significant link between the moband
  loose
nukes. Three powerful Mafia families had joined forces to smuggleuranium
through Europe and into the Middle East. The development added one
  moreworry
for Western governments already concerned about professional thieves and
small-time opportunists seeking to trade in the nuclear black market.
With terrorist groups and rogue states eager to build crude
  nuclearweapons,
and with Russia's nuclear arsenal left vulnerable by economic chaos, the
Mafia's hawking of uranium further raises the nuclear stakes in
  thepost-Cold
War era.``Uranium bars are weapons in psychological terrorism,''
  said Enrico
Sgrilli, a nuclear physicist who trained police in nuclear physics. ``A
terrorist can hold one bar up and panic an entire city. This case
  shakesthe
confidence in our system for controlling illegal nuclear materials.
  Itshows there are dangerous loopholes.''
Police confiscated the 190-gram uranium bar. But police
andintelligence
officials acknowledge they failed to capture the mob's entire
  stockpile.They
speculate that seven other bars - comprising 1,330 grams of uranium -are
  most likely hidden in Italy.
``There are other bars out there,'' said Gen. Mario
  Iannelli,commander of
the Finance Police unit on organized crime, which directed the
  sting.``This is
very scary. . . . We don't exactly know what uranium the mob has
becausewe
never saw all of what it was selling.''
Intelligence officials say there is one more unnerving
possibility:The mob may actually be holding eight Russian missiles.
The Italian investigation netted 14 mobsters from three
  crimefamilies. It
entailed dozens of hours of wiretaps and secret meetings,
hopscothingfrom Rome to Sicily and from Calbria to the Alps.
Laced throughout the operation's danger were comical moments
asmobsters
nicknamed ``the Mustache'' and ``the Other One'' haggled over trust
andmoney. One Mafia lieutenant brought his mother along to check a Swiss
  bankaccount.
During a wiretapped conversation, one mobster asked another how
theEgyptian businessman would pay for the uranium.
``They move [money] through banks, right?''
``Yes, of course, you think they'd do it with a suitcase? We got
  bignumbers
here.''As the investigation broadened, Italian authorities learned
that enricheduranium moves through a global network propelled as much by
  political
instability as by criminals. The uranium bar police confiscated was

For those interested in the psychedelic experience of animals, it is
necess= ary to debunk the sensationalistic newpaper accounts of the
elephant who died f= rom using LSD. In actuality, a zoo got rid of a
surplus elephant by offering i= t to any scientist who wanted it for
experimental purposes. Jolly West was a psychiatrist at UCLA. Leary
claimed that West also did secret psychedelic research for the CIA,
although he lied about this involvement whenever anyb= ody asked him
about it in public. Jolly volunteered to shoot a giant LSD-laden
hypodermic dart into the elephant. The missile penetrated the poor
creature's jugular vein. The unfortunate beast collapsed in
convulsions. It died before the LSD could even take effect. Upon
publicizing this tragedy, the news reports neglected to mention that the
elephant had really been mortally wounded by the traumatic impact of a
projectile weapon. While this so-called "experiment" lacked any
genuine scientific merit, it made Jolly famous. Exploiting his
reputation as "The Elephant Killer", he infiltrated a rural hippie
commune by pretending to be sympathetic with their "back to nature"
philosophy. To establish rapport with people, he patted his enormous
corpulent belly, chortling "I have become quite elephantine myself!" He
took photographs and made reports about the counterculture community
over several years. He also ingratiated himself with bearded
long-haired artists so he could photograph them standing next to
psychedelic paintings. Later, during his lectures at conventions of
law enforcement agents, the Jolly Elephant Killer used this evidence to
portray psychedelic users as brain-damaged degenerates. Jolly bragged
"Even though I had a crew-cut at the time, those hippies loved me
because I was known as the dude who killed the elephant with LSD." =20

[CTRL] What Is Political Extremism (Pt. 2)

1999-01-15 Thread Agent Smiley

  Activist Mailing List - http://users.westnet.gr/~cgian/

  [Continued from Part 1]

  7. Extremists Tend To Have A Manichean Worldview. That is, they tend
to see the world in terms of absolutes of good and evil, for them or
against them, with no middle ground or intermediate positions. All
issues are ultimately moral issues of right and wrong. Their slogan
tends to be "he who is not with me, is against me!"

  8. Extremists Very Often Advocate Some Degree Of Censorship And
Repression Of Their Opponents And Critics. This may range from an
active campaign to keep them from media access and a public hearing,
as in the case of blacklisting, banning, or "quarantining" dissident
spokesmen, or actually lobbying for repressive legislation against
speaking, teaching or instructing the "forbidden" information. They
may attempt to keep certain books out of stores or off of library
shelves or card catalogs, discourage advertising with threats of
reprisals, keep spokesmen for offending views off the airwaves, or
certain columnists out of newspapers. In each instance the goal is
some kind of information control. Extremists would prefer that you
  only listen to them.

  9. Extremists Tend To Identify Themselves In Terms Of Who Their
Enemies Are, who they hate and who hates them! Accordingly, they often
become emotionally bound to their enemies, who are often competing
extremists on the opposite pole of the ideological spectrum. They tend
to emulate their enemies in certain respects, adopting the same style
and tactics to a certain degree. Even "anti-extremist" groups often
exhibit extremist behavior in this regard!

  10. Extremists Are Given To Arguments By Intimidation. That is, they
frame their arguments in such a way as to intimidate others into
accepting their premises and conclusions. To disagree with them, they
imply, is to ally oneself with the devil or give aid and comfort to
the "bad guys." This ploy allows them to define the parameters of
debate, cut off troublesome lines of argument, and keep their
  opponents on the defensive.

  11. Wide Use Of Slogans, Buzzwords And Thought-Stopping Cliches. For
many extremists simple slogans substitute for more complex
abstractions in spite of a high level of intelligence. Shortcuts in
thinking and reasoning matters out seems to be necessary in order to
appease their prejudices and to avoid troublesome facts and
  counter-arguments.

  12. Doomsday Thinking. Extremists often predict dire or catastrophic
consequences from a situation or from failure to follow a specific
course, and they exhibit a kind of "crisis-mindedness." It can be a
Communist takeover, a Nazi revival, nuclear war, currency collapse,
worldwide famine, drought, earthquakes, floods or the wrath of God.
Whatever it is, it's just around the corner unless we follow their
program and listen to their special insights or the wisdom that only
  the enlightened have access to!

  13. Extremists Often Claim Some Kind Of Moral Or Other Superiority
Over Others. Most obvious are claims of general racial superiority --
a master race, for example. Less obvious are claims of ennoblement
because of alleged victimhood, a special relationship with God,
membership in a special "elite" or revolutionary vanguard. They also
take great offense when one is "insensitive" enough to dispute these
  claims or challenge their authority.

  14. Extremists Tend To Believe That It's OK To Do Bad Things In The
Service Of A "Good" Cause. They may deliberately lie, distort,
misquote, slander or libel their opponents and critics, or advocate
censorship or repression in "special cases" involving their enemies.
This is done with no remorse as long as it's useful in defeating the
Commies or Fascists (or whoever). Defeating an "enemy" becomes an
all-encompassing goal to which other values are subordinate. With
extremists, the ends often justify the means.

  15. Extremists Tend To Place Great Value On Emotional Responses. They
have a reverence for propaganda, which they may call education or
consciousness-raising. Consequently, they tend to drape themselves and
their cause in a flag of patriotism, a banner of righteousness or a
shroud of victimhood. Their crusades against "enemies" may invoke
images of the swastika, the hammer and sickle or some other symbol, as
the case may be. In each instance the symbol represents an extremely
odious concept in terms of their ideological premises. This ploy
attempts to invoke an uncritical gut-level sympathy and acceptance of
their position which discourages examination of their premises or the
conclusions which they claim necessarily derive from them.

  16. Some Extremists, Particularly Those Involved In "Cults" Or
religious movements such as fundamental evangelical Christians,
Zionists, members of the numerous new age groups and followers of
certain "gurus," claim some kind of

Impeached POTUS

"His lies were not few or isolated but pervaded his whole testimony."

THE prosecution of Bill Clinton for perjury and obstruction of justice
opened yesterday in the august and sombre precincts of the US Senate.
Chief Justice William Rehnquist, head of the Supreme Court, rapped his
gavel and called Henry Hyde, lead "manager" of the prosecution team, to
the well of the upper chamber. Mr Hyde told the 100 senators hanging on
his words that they were now the custodians for generations of future
Americans of the sanctity of sworn oaths and the simple words "I do",
spoken by the President when he promised to protect the law, and spoken
by themselves when they promised to do impartial justice.

As Mr Clinton's jurors, they would decide whether those two words would
be preserved in the future, "or go the way of so much of our moral
infrastructure . . . full of sound and fury, signifying nothing". For
the first time in 131 years America's top politicians sat as a jury and
weighed evidence presented by the House of Representatives that the
sitting president is an incubus on the government - a scoundrel who must
be removed from office.

Mr Hyde handed over to James Sensenbrenner, a fellow prosecutor and
hardline conservative, to outline the case against Mr Clinton and to
explain the need to call witnesses. He told the Senate that Mr Clinton's
lying to friends and family about his affair with Monica Lewinsky, was a
betrayal, but his lying in the Paula Jones sexual harassment suit and to
the grand jury, made it a public matter.

Mr Sensenbrenner said: "That is an offence against the public," and said
that it was a vital national issue that "a poor and powerless person"
should be able to claim the protection of the law against a man at the
pinnacle of power. "What he did was criminal, time and time again," he
insisted.

He warned the Senate that if it decided that Mr Clinton should be
acquitted on the grounds that his lies were excusable efforts to conceal
nothing more serious than an embarrassing affair, it would make
harassment law and all laws relating to sex unenforceable. Mr
Sensenbrenner listed a catalogue of alleged lies in the grand jury
evidence of Aug 17, saying the President's falsehoods "were neither few
in number nor isolated but, rather, pervaded his entire testimony.

"He has not owned up to the false testimony, the stonewalling and legal
hair-splitting and obstructing the courts from finding the truth. He
must be held accountable to the only constitutional means the country
has available: the difficult and painful process of impeachment."

Every leading political figure in America bar one - the defendant - was
on hand for an event which no one now alive has seen before. Rather than
staying holed up in the White House while his fate was being decided,
the President left Washington, first for Virginia to talk about
community policing, then for New York for a get-together with his
quasi-confessor Jesse Jackson.

But Mr Hyde suggested that it would be a good idea for Mr Clinton to
come back to the Capitol and testify personally at his trial. He said:
"We're all interested in hearing from the President as a witness. Under
Senate rules, we don't have any right to call him, but we can request
the Senate invite the President over, so we may do that."

This drew a hostile response from Joe Lockhart, the chief White House
spokesman, who said Mr Clinton had already testified to the grand jury.
He said: "This late hour request from Henry Hyde once again illustrates
that this is really about politics." The prosecution, he said, "bent,
shaped and twisted the rules" to suit itself.

But several Senators believe that Mr Clinton should appear in the well
of the upper chamber. Orrin Hatch, chairman of the Senate judiciary
committee, said: "It may be that the President will have to testify.
That depends on whether he feels he has to come here to make his case
because he may be having a more difficult time than he currently
anticipates."

This sort of comment, hinting that things may unravel for Mr Clinton,
intensified tension, amid clear signs that last week's vaunted
"bipartisanship" is disintegrating. Tom Daschle, the minority leader,
and more than a dozen other Senate Democrats, met Abbe Lowell and other
anti-impeachment lawyers from the House for a briefing on the best
answers to prosecution allegations.

It heightened suspicions among Republicans that despite lofty talk of
"duty" and "impartiality", many Democrats have already made up their
minds to acquit Mr Clinton and are intent mainly on assembling
justifications for doing so. Mr Daschle said the meeting was "simply to
be better briefed on the House proceedings", but Lindsey Graham, a
prosecutor, hoped that the Democrats would similarly seek out David
Schippers, the majority counsel, to get a balanced view.

BREAD AND CIRCUSES * - Part 1

The off-year elections are behind us, and we cannot help but draw certain
parallels with other advanced Welfare states in Europe. Having seen the
failure of collectivist economies in the former Soviet Union and the East
Bloc, and particularly the dramatic differences between the economies of
East and West Germany, one would be inclined to think that the way shead to
market economies would be the obvious choice, at least in the West.

The economic turn-around in Britain under the Tories, which made the UK the
most competitive market in Europe, arguably triggered the move to the right
in Italy, France, Sweden and others. That this effort was to be extremely
short lived on the Continent was a lesson that American politicos,
particularly Republicans, failed to consider.

THE CONTRACT WITH AMERICA
There will no doubt be reams of articles on the election attacking the
conservative wing of the party whose Contract with America swept so many to
victory in 1994. We predicted in our December, 1994, issue, "Šreform
attempts would simply be swallowed up in legislative and bureaucratic
inertia." Indeed, the Contract was alright with the establishment as long
as nothing was actually done. But when freshmen Republicans began to push
an agenda of true welfare reform, the party leadership panicked and began
to play dead. In due course, efforts to scuttle the Department of
Education, enact universal tax relief, prevent the socialization of
medicine and other reforms were abandoned.

Having failed to follow up on the Contract, the only successful Republican
strategy in 40 years, the Republicans seemed totally confused by the
"reform program" of the "New Democrats", who, headed by Bill Clinton,
appeared to steal the thunder from the stalled Contract with a socialist
version of their own.
Mr. Gingrich (a member of the Council on Foreign Relations) got his
come-uppance from the establishment through his book deal scandal, which
cost him a $300,000 fine and neutralized his leadership. Since then he had
been ineffective in leading his House majority in the advancement of any
real Republican agenda.

"THE NEW DEMOCRATS"
What had so confused Republicans would have been abundantly clear if they
had taken the trouble to look abroad. John Major, upon inheriting the prime
ministership from Margaret Thatcher, almost immediately began to abandon
the conservative programs which had kept the Tories in power for eighteen
years, particularly, the issue of European Monetary Union (EMU). If any
European nation could successfully stand alone against the threat to
national sovereignty posed by EMU, it was insular Britain, whose economy
was vibrant while those of Continental nations were moribund. It was
probable that the ineffectual Major, in seeking what is euphemistically
called the "centrist" position, guaranteed the demise of the Tories. What
Clinton and the "New Democrats" had achieved by stealing the rhetoric of
"free trade" in the Americas (NAFTA), the "New Labour" candidate Tony Blair
used to advance Britain toward EMU.

We have postulated that New Democrats, New Labour in Britain, and
Neo-socialists on the Continent, after viewing the economic collapse in the
former Soviet Union, have realized that the immensely inefficient Welfare
states of the West, with their burdensome national debts, their current
accounts deficits, their continuing trade imbalances, their overinflated
credit markets and their falling paper currencies, are in severe
decline-with which they must come to terms if they are to preserve their
power bases. (This is the explanation for the attacks against industry in
the United States-tobacco, gun manufacturers, and even automobile
companies; hundreds of billions must be extorted from the private sector to
shore up the sagging Welfare state.)

What it amounts to is that neo-socialists of whatever stripe, rather than
abandoning the proven failure of Welfare state ideology, plan to streamline
it more along the lines of a multi-national fascist dictatorship. To do
this, they must adopt the rhetoric of the establishment right, which has
never championed the dismantling of the Welfare state, only improvements in
its efficiency. This is where the confusion sets in-both New Democrats and
New Republicans want essentially the same thing, and conservative Democrats
and Republicans who have the only viable alternatives, are pilloried as
destroyers of the "social safety net".

THE LABOR BACKLASH
Karl Marx, the father of Communism, an intellectual like all
revolutionaries, who nevertheless dress in workers' clothing (Lenin, Mao,
Castro, etc.) understood perfectly that they needed bodies to flesh out
their revolutions. These could not come from the estates which Marx wanted
to overthrow-the aristocracy and the church, so they had to come from the
least educated, working class, who could be easily confused and exploited
through the tortuous path of Marxist dialectics.

The point so many people seem to be missing is that this whole scandal
started with a lawsuit brought by a woman whose credibility is severely in
question, at a time when the law was not even clear whether a civil lawsuit
could be brought against a sitting president. Clearly, lawyers--including
friends and associates of Kenneth Starr--approached Ms. Jones with offers to
take her case and somehow come up with money for her living expenses in
order to argue the position that a president can be sued during his term.

Suppose for a moment that she lied about what happened. Suppose also that
the lawyers were acting on behalf of politically motivated individuals who
hate Clinton for political reasons only--because his policies hurt their
pocketbooks, for example. Suppose these same people knew Monica's
proclivities and Bill's weakness and set up a scenario for him to fall into,
while at the same time pushing the Jones case through the court so that
depositions could be taken. Then they monitored Monica's reports through
agents Tripp and Goldberg, making sure any available evidence (like the
dress) is preserved.

I believe this scenario--given the connections between Ted and Barbara
Olson, Kenneth Starr, the Rutherford Foundation and Richard Mellon
Scaife--is much more credible than the "common sense" allegations Starr
presented to Congress, without any real evidence, such as any small-town
prosecutor in Texas would have to have in order to convict anybody for
anything. If the real evidence he had, and the way he got it were revealed,
and were subject to cross-examination in a real court, the judge would
dismiss the case without presenting it to the jury.

The Truth, the Whole Truth . . .

By David LePlunom

What is the truth? Is it a reasonable goal of the court that every statement
made in a court of law should be true? This doesn't appear reasonable or an
effective means to achieve a rule of law.
For example, what is the truth as it related to the testimony of Paula
Jones?

Paula Jones clearly lied under oath in her complaint and in her deposition.
Judge Wright described Paula Jones' testimony regarding tangible job
damages as vague, contradictory and contrary in some cases to state
employment records in her April 1 order dismissing the case. This was a
very accurate description of the testimony of Paula Jones. It is emphasized
that this was the legal basis for which Monica Lewinsky was permitted to be
subpoenaed as a witness.

We have taken the testimony from the actual deposition transcripts and the
complaints to emphasize points where probable perjury was commited. This
will not effect the sanctimonious in the press who will continue to
emphasize President Clinton's lie under oath. We have to remember that the
Starnographers are incapable of being influenced by truth. No matter what
the testimony showed, the Starry Eyed were just going to emphasize
everything Paula Jones' attorneys were stating and ignore the truth about
how weak her case was. By the way for the McCollum, Barr and Sennsenbrenner
groupies, there are quite a few I don't recall statements here.

In this article by the way, I have emphasized points in her complaint or
deposition contradicted at another point in testimony by either Paula Jones
or state employment records. I have not cited excerpts from other
depositions that would imply she is not telling the truth. I have also
emphasized situations where I believe it is clear Paula is not telling the
truth.

The following are the points that clearly indicate that Paula's testimony
was far from the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth:

1) Paula Jones claimed in her sworn complaint that she did not receive merit
raises in retribution for refusing to accede to Governor Clinton's alleged
advances. However, the records of the state indicated she did receive
several of these raises. Let us examine her testimony in this area to see if
it was the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth:

Q. All right. And on March 11th, 1992, you received a merit increase?

A NEW BOOK: "MURDER BY MEDIA. DEATH OF DEMOCRACY."
(see instructions at the end for a SPECIAL DISCOUNT for TiM readers)

WESTERN AUSTRALIA, Jan. 15 - The clock is ticking. Time is running out on
the establishment media who murder the truth day in and day out. A new
book is about to be released in Sydney, Australia, which will pinpoint who
the perpetrators of this crime against freedom are. The book's title is
"Murder by Media. Death of Democracy" (ISSN 1441-6476).

But it could have been also called defending the truth in media. For, if
there were the truth in the establishment media these days, there would be
no need for the Truth in Media. Nor for books like this one, published by
Scott Balson, an independent Australian publisher. The book's launch will
take place at 1 PM on Friday, January 22, 1999, outside the gates of the
Sydney's "Channel 9" TV station on Artarmon Road. Mr. Balson will also
address the media.

"Murder by Media, Death of Democracy in Australia," is based on three years
of research undertaken privately by Mr. Balson on the Internet, by
assessing thousands of articles and "opinion" pieces which have appeared in
Australian newspapers.

Although the book is largely Australian based, it also includes an
"American Chapter" written by a US based geopolitical analyst and
columnist, yours truly, the TiM editor.

The book heralds the arrival of a new era as we pass from the Information
Age into the Age of Enlightenment. "It is my belief that the time has now
run out for many journalists and editors in Australia," said Mr. Balson.
"They have usurped their right to be upholders of 'freedom of speech,' and
custodians of objective and balanced reporting - by denying it to others.
Simply put, they have failed dismally."

"Murder by Media, Death of Democracy in Australia," clearly challenges
their track record in recent years. For objective, honest journalists, as
well as the public thirsty for truth and nothing but, the information
contained in the book is invaluable. This book looks behind the scenes,
and exposes just how the Big Business behind the major parties control and
manipulate the political system to their own benefit."

"What Australians must not lose sight of is that journalistic ethics today
are seriously compromised, because there are not many options left for a
journalist who upsets the duopoly of the Packer or Murdoch media," Mr.
Balson said. " Under the polarized Packer/Murdoch media empires (the two
Aussie media dons), Australia has lost its democracy in the true sense of
the word.

The book's stats: approximately 120,000 words; 272 pages; 40+ color photos;
over 400 links to various Internet sites. An overview of the book, and an
order form on-line, are available at: http://members.tripod.com/balson .

The book may be ordered by sending a payment of A$27 or US$25 (which
includes airmail postage) to Scott Balson, P.O. Box 11, Mt. Crosby News
4306, Queensland, Australia (E-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED]). If you identify
yourself as a TiM reader when ordering the book, you will be entitled to a
SPECIAL TRUTH IN MEDIA DISCOUNT OF US$5, for a net price of US$20 per book.

You can also buy the book at your nearest Dymocks book store the national
Australian distributors for the book - but the TiM discount does not apply
there. The signing of books will take place at the George Street branch of
Dymocks in downtown Sydney on Saturday, Jan. 23rd, between noon and 2 PM.

International inquiries may be directed to Scott Balson by dialing (from
the US) 011-61-7-3201-1353; or 011-61-015-477-609 (mobile phone); or at

WESTERN AUSTRALIA, Jan. 15 - "What's the Rottnest Island's obsession with

All cellular phones now incorporate the same technology discussed below. In
1998 the FCC began requiring cellular service providers to develop systems
that would allow a cell-phone user to be located anywhere within the
coverage area in case the user dials 911. By 2001 the cellular system will
be able to locate a phone within a 125-meter radius.

Satellite Offenders

Satellites that track people are no longer reserved for enemies of the
state. Global Positioning System technology is now being used to monitor
convicted criminals on probation, parole, home detention, or work release.
SecurityLink, a subsidiary of telecommunications giant Ameritech, said the
Satellite Monitoring and Remote Tracking system, or SMART, allows
corrections officials to watch an offender's every move. It gives prisons
and jails "the ultimate electronic monitoring solution when they need it
most," said SecurityLink project director Ed Maier.

---[snip---

"Now, for the first time, we have the technology to monitor an offender's
whereabouts in real time," said Bill Kimberlin, chief probation officer for
the Sandusky Municipal Court in Sandusky, Ohio, which began using SMART two
weeks ago.

---[snip---

Developed by Pro Tech Monitoring Equipment of Palm Harbor, Florida, SMART
uses the 24-satellite system to track the location of offenders around the
clock. Convicts carry a small tracking device, which receives coordinates
from GPS satellites and communicates them to a monitoring center.

[CTRL] Reno finds no wrongdoing by Gore aide

1999-01-15 Thread Linda Minor

 -Caveat Lector-

[01/14] Reno finds no wrongdoing by former top Gore aide
WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Attorney General Janet Reno said Thursday that no
further investigation was required of criminal allegations involving Peter
Knight, a former top aide to Vice President Al Gore.

Refusing to move toward an independent counsel probe, Reno ended a 30-day
review into whether Knight, who managed the 1996 Clinton-Gore campaign,
helped another Gore friend get favorable terms on a government lease and
lied about it.

The allegations involving Knight, who is expected to play a key role in
Gore's 2000 presidential bid, were sent to the Justice Department by a
congressional committee last month.

Reno said in a statement that she concluded that she does not possess
``specific and credible information'' that Knight, who is covered by the
independent counsel law, ``may have violated federal criminal law.''

She said there was ``no basis'' to begin a preliminary investigation into
the allegations.

The House Commerce Committee alleged that Knight helped Tennessee
businessman and real estate developer Franklin Haney get the favorable terms
on the lease and that in return Haney contributed $280,000 to the Democrats.

The committee also alleged that Knight, a former chief of staff to Gore,
lied to it about a $1 million fee Haney paid him.

Reno twice late last year refused to seek an independent counsel to
investigate Gore on campaign-related questions.

In December, Reno decided against an independent counsel to investigate
President Clinton and Gore over political ads financed by the Democratic
Party during the 1996 election.

In late November, Reno decided not to seek an independent counsel to
investigate whether Gore lied to FBI agents about telephone fund-raising
calls from his office during the 1996 presidential election campaign.

Haney faces charges brought by a Justice Department task force investigating
campaign finance abuses that he made nearly $80,000 in illegal contributions
to Clinton's reelection effort and to two other candidates from Tennessee.

The House Commerce Committee investigated financial and political ties
between Haney and top Democratic officials, including Knight, over the lease
of the Portals building in Washington, D.C. It is scheduled to become the
Federal Communications Commission's new headquarters.

The panel questioned whether $1 million payments to Knight and former
Tennessee senator Jim Sasser were illegal contingency fees and whether they
used their political influence to gain a government lease.

[CTRL] Cargill and Continental Grain merger

1999-01-15 Thread Linda Minor

 -Caveat Lector-

[01/14] Cargill antitrust issues complicated, Iowa State economist says

WASHINGTON, Jan 14 (Reuters) - Cargill Inc.'s acquisition of the grain
business of Continental Grain Co. would give it control over 36 percent of
ship loading capacity in the Louisiana and Texas Gulf, up from 26 percent
currently, according to a new study by a team of university economists.
But the complicated dynamics of the U.S. grain export market make it
difficult to evaluate the deal's impact on competition and prices in some
areas, they said.

Cargill, based in Minnetonka, Minn., is the largest privately held U.S.
company and the world's largest private agribusiness company. It's the No. 1
U.S. grain exporter and one of the world's largest food processors.
Cargill's other operations include petroleum and financial futures trading.

Continental Grain, headquartered in New York City, is the second largest
U.S. grain exporter. After selling that business, Continental Grain plans to
change its name to ContiGroup Companies and will be involved in such diverse
enterprises as financial services, meat processing, flour milling, and
natural gas trading.

A "white paper" analysis of the proposed Cargill/Continental deal was put
together by economists at Iowa State University, Oklahoma State University
and North Dakota State University.

The paper outlined general U.S. grain market conditions and did not reach
any conclusions on the benefits or drawbacks of the acquisition. The
economists interviewed experts at the U.S. Agriculture Department, the
Chicago Board of Trade, the Commodity Futures Trading Commission and Cargill
for data.

"We prepared this as a white paper so that others can have the facts and
things they ought to think about to have an informed debate," said Marvin
Hayenga, an ISU economist and lead author.

Several farm groups and Democratic senators have criticized the acquisition,
claiming the combination of the top two U.S. grain exporters could decrease
competition. Sen. Richard Lugar, an Indiana Republican who heads the Senate
Agriculture Committee, has scheduled a hearing later this month on
concentration in the farm sector.

Big change in Louisiana/Gulf

The Cargill acquisition would result in relatively little additional market
concentration in overall U.S. storage and acquisition of grain by farmers,
or at most river barge terminals, he said. But specific terminals could see
big increases, Hayenga said.

Cargill, which aims to finalize the deal by the end of the first quarter,
contends the acquisition will help it become more competitive and efficient
in moving U.S. farmers' grain to market.

One of the biggest increases in concentration under the deal would be in the
combined Louisiana and Texas Gulf port area, where Cargill would grow to 36
percent of market share, the study said.

"The advantages of low-cost barge transportation may make the Louisiana Gulf
ports more attractive destinations than the Texas Gulf for export grain from
many parts of the upper Midwest," the study said. But it added that the Gulf
ports also are competitive with each other and "probably" with East Coast
and Great Lakes ports for export business.

The Texas Gulf ports also compete with the Pacific Northwest ports for some
grain shipments from the western farm belt that is headed to Asia, the study
said.

"Thus, the shares by leading firms in a local or regional area may not be a
good indicator of their potential impact on competition and prices in those
areas," the study said.

Cargill, ADM would control Illinois River

Along the northern Illinois River -- a key delivery area for futures
contracts -- the deal would give Cargill 27 percent of the terminal storage,
the study found.

That would be second only to Archer Daniels Midland Co. [ADM], which now
controls 49 percent of facilities north of Pekin, Ill.

"Cargill's acquisition might not appear problematic in this area if ADM was
not so large," the study said. "However, the combination of these two large
players and their share of volume traded, not just storage capacity, in the
futures market delivery area may prompt closer examination by the Justice
Department."

The Chicago Board of Trade may need to expand its wheat and corn delivery
areas to eliminate any appearance of the risk of manipulation of deliveries,
handling costs or futures prices, the study said.

"Excess capacity by smaller elevator competitors, other processors, feed
companies, etc., and ease of entry might ease concerns about excess market
power in this regional market," the report said.

The study also said there were many competitors to buy grain from farmers in
most areas. "The acquisition probably will make little difference in local
competition for farmers' grain," it said.

Gee, hypocrite hawk, how come we are not still doing this today? Taking

We, who? I'm not, for one reason, because I'm not fighting any wars at
this
 time... Maybe later.
 =
Well, let us see, hawk didn't answer this question. Just some 'cute' words.
 =

I told you why "we" are not taking slaves in warfare.. One reason is because
I
am
not engaged in any applicable warfare in which slaves might be taken..
Another
reason is, as I have said many times, I do not want any slaves. If by "we"
you
mean the United States, I cannot answer for the govm't... I could only
presume
that they would rather kill people than take slaves. It doesn't mean that
they
necessarily have an aversion to slavery... and in fact (to keep this
topical),
I
venture there are plans (conspiracies) in the pot right now to enslave
people.
=
Again a 'cute' answer, while evaded any real answer. I submitt that 'we' as a
nation do not take slaves is because it is Wrong and can't be sold under even
wuth some muddle-headed 'religious doctrine'. Not because our government
wishes to kill humans instead of taking slaves -a truly ignorant answer.
Conspiracies to decieve people and to 'enslave' them to political and
technocratic pogroms is different than the institution of humans OWNING other
humans.
=

So a slave has his personal sovereignty? I would submit that his
personal
sovereignty has been stolen. You just continue to show yourself to be an
  ignorant hypocrite.

And you continue to show yourself the equivalent of a gradeschool fool...
I
think whatever you are doing, you are needed somewhere as the village
idiot.
 =
Again, hawk has not answered any question or dealt with the issue at hand
but
has resorted to name calling and more 'cute' answers. I submit again, does
a
 slave have personal sovereignty?
 =

I do not know the definition of words or phrases you concoct. If by
"personal"
you mean "as an individual" and "sovereignty" you mean absolute control over
his
affairs, then my answer is "No, a slave does not have personal sovereignty."
In
fact, neither do non-slaves.
=
Ok, who took the personal sovereinty from the slave? Does this not constitute
theft?
Again you try and change the subject by commiserating on the political
realities of today.
=

  Did Jesus have long hair?

 I don't know...
 =
Hawk can you please tell me what rules are valid in the Old Testament and
 which aren't?
 =

Which "rules" are you asking about? I don't know how you are using the word,
"valid." If you mean do the "laws" of Leviticus have jurisdiction over
Christians, the answer is "no." If, for instance, you mean "The 10
Commandments,"
the answer is "None of them." and I base that on, among other passages,
Romans
7. There are many passages (particularly entire book of Galatians, and much
of
Ephesians) that teach specifically, "If you wish to apply any portion of the
law
upon yourself as an obligation, then you must apply all of it. It is a
package
deal." However for you, as a Celtic Bhuddist, whatever in the hell that is,
it
ALL applies to you, according to my understanding of New Testament doctrine
on
this matter.
=
So if none of the above rules apply, why did you hypocritically quote certain
'rules' from Numbers to back-up your assertion that slavery isn't a wrong
action.
I have never claimed to be a Celtic Buddhist.
So what are the rules, Pope Hawk? And how come you favour the words of
saul/paul over the words of Jesus the Nazerite AKA The Christ?

Do you really enjoy showing the world your hypocrisy and ignorance? There is
some entertainment value, though.

than the one in which I currently (consciously) exist correspond to the
following (esp elements of #6a). (Not a bad guesser, eh?) Now, before
anyone does a strictly 'theological' take on the following, I would offer
for consideration that the whole approach to be effective in almost any
sphere of thought. If we watch the 'impeachment' trial, merely replacing
the 'theological' terms with 'legalisms' (as expounded by the elected and
their representatives), the application of 'hermeneutics' is an exhibition
of their efforts (Clinton meant this by what he said or gestured or
whateverhaveyou). Or, if we read articles (rarities on this forum), the
same approach may be taken as well. Note the initial point reads "esp.
biblical" meaning "not necessarily confined thereto."

This is one aspect of 'research': providing one's analysis, with
references and definitions, in relation to others', also known as
'comparative analysis'. Perhaps 'hermeneutics' is new as term, for me and
others, but from my own experience as a student of foreign languages and
other esoteric pursuits, the objective of the subject is fairly familiar
and straightforward and of invaluable use to assist with my researching of
my recollection for the specificity of information pertinent to the
issue(s) at hand. In fact, my point on 'slavery' dovetails well with #2c
in that not only the language is 'evolving' but the whole society has made
some remarkable strides in its evolution as well, rendering the atmosphere
of that and any other past time very much up to the active imaginations
(fancies, phantasies, whathaveyou) of its students. Any student must
remember the eral (of an era) lens through which he or she is viewing the
(past) subject at hand. I would say THIS is also an 'hermaneutical'
principle as well (2d, 2e, e.g.).

Hermeneutics - General Principals

1. What is Hermeneutics?

   a. the science of Interpretation - esp. biblical
   b. Establishes and classifies principles, methods and rules by which the
meaning of an author can be ascertained.
   c. " the redundant explanations of common sense interspersed with choice
tidbits of gobbledygook making a concise statement of rules and methods for
understanding those things that might otherwise have remained perfectly
clear."
   d. difference and similarities between Interpretation and translation
   e. Make it clear and give the meaning: Neh 8:7,8 Luke 24:27

2. Why is Hermeneutics necessary? reasons:

   a. We have a Heavenly message conveyed in human language.
   b. the biblical languages differ widely from English in grammatical
structure and idiomatic usage.
   c. the English language itself is constantly changing.
   d. the eastern, biblical culture is vastly different from our western
culture.
   e. the bible is an ancient book.
   f. the mind of Man is worldly and the heart of man is deceitful and
wicked. Jer 17:9
   g. false teachers are growing worse and worse; twisting, teaching, and
deceiving.
   h. Satan is still misquoting the Scriptures!

3. What are the necessary requirements of the biblical interpreter?

   a. Born again- for the natural man receives not the things of the spirit
of God..." 1 Cor 2:14
   b. Love the Truth or God will send delusion..." 2 Thess 2:10-11
   c. Chose God's will and you'll know the doctrine..." John 7:17
   d. Desire the sincere milk of the Word..." 1 Pet 2:2
   e. Receive it as it is indeed: the Word of God..." 1 Thess 2:13

4. What must we avoid?

   a. Approaching God's word with preconceived doctrinal, social, or
personal biases
   b. Approaching God's word with an Unteachable spirit
   c. Approaching God's word with an Arrogant, Intellectual attitude
   d. Approaching God's word with a desire to justify our sin
   e. Approaching God's word with a blind eye to those parts that convict
us of sin

5. What tools and/or special knowledge is required ?

   a. Bible
   b. Principles of Hermeneutics
   c. Hebrew/Greek word studies
   d. Working knowledge of biblical cultures
   e. Understanding of Idiomatic usage in the Bible

[CTRL] Striped Sleeves Mean Impeachment Is Military?

1999-01-15 Thread Brian Redman

 -Caveat Lector-

STRIPED SLEEVES MEAN IMPEACHMENT IS MILITARY?
=

(CNNS, 01/15/99) -- Those are not just striped sleeves Chief
Judge William Rehnquist is wearing as he presides over the
impeachment trial of Bill Clinton. Those are GOLD-striped
sleeves.

An article in the New York Times (Electronic Edition) dated Jan.
15, 1999, describes Judge Rehnquist specifically as "resplendent
in his black gown with four gold stripes on each sleeve."

A commentary in the New York Post, by Steve Dunleavy, also sees
gold, but Dunleavy describes "three gold stripes on his robe."
["We Could Witness A Total Travesty If Republicans Fold," by
Steve Dunleavy. NYPost, 1/15/99]

There is disagreement between the NYTimes and NYPost as to
whether there are 3 or 4 stripes, but both agree that those are
gold stripes Judge Rehnquist is wearing.

Why the sudden new fashion in judicial wear?Rehnquist
reportedly says he copied the gold-striped style "after seeing a
Gilbert and Sullivan operetta." [Dunleavy. Op. cit.]

Is Judge Rehnquist's explanation believable? That a scholarly
jurist, the Chief Justice of the U.S. Supreme Court, approaches
the somber and serious business of presiding over the impeachment
trial of a U.S. President with such a flippant attitude? One of
the most serious proceedings, if not THE most serious proceeding,
over which Rehnquist is ever to preside, and he is so humorous,
light-hearted and cavalier that he copies his style of robe from
a Gilbert Sullivan operetta?

CNNS does not believe Rehnquist's explanation as to why he is
suddenly wearing gold-stripes on his judicial robe.

And since Rehnquist's Gilbert Sullivan story is implausible and
therefore a cover story, and hides whatever the REAL reason is
for the sudden change in judicial wardrobe, then what is it that
Rehnquist's cover story is meant to hide?

-+- A Rosetta Stone -+-

Rehnquist's gold stripes are a Rosetta Stone, unlocking many
mysteries.

If Rehnquist is wearing 4 gold stripes on each sleeve, then
according to "Ru Mills" (pseudonym) those 4 gold stripes are
equivalent to the rank of Full Admiral in the U.S. Navy.

A researcher has published to a conspiracy research mailing list
([EMAIL PROTECTED]) what he has uncovered as to the possible
significance of Rehnquist's gold striped-sleeves. He writes, in
part, that

There has been some discussion among law researchers that
indicates that the gold fringe on the US flag indicates
martial law rule. If you recall the old westerns when the
US cavalry showed up they all had gold braids on the
trumpet, flag, and on the shoulders. We know for certain
that they were under martial law, for the federal
government was governing the territories directly previous
  to them entering as states.

-+- The Military Connection -+-

In Edward Gibbon's great book, "The Decline and Fall of the Roman
Empire," the author repeatedly describes how, with the accession
of each new Roman Emperor, a pre-requisite was, often, approval
by the military. Following the death of Constantine, for
example, "a loud and unanimous declaration was procured from the
troops that they would suffer none except the sons of their
lamented monarch to reign over the Roman empire." Military
support was crucial; without it, the Caesars could not rule. As
the Roman Empire decayed over the centuries, military support
became increasingly necessary and support from the Roman senate
was no longer very important.

Over several years, Sherman Skolnick, chairman of the
Chicago-based public interest research group, Citizens' Committee
To Clean Up The Courts, has reported on attempts by U.S. military
brass to arrest their Commander-in-Chief, Bill Clinton, under
provisions of the U.S. Military Code of Justice.Does
Rehnquist's gold striped-sleeve robe suggest that something like
a military arrest or military trial has occurred or is occurring?
Or is the new-style judicial robe merely a symbolic message from
the military, warning Clinton of their power?

Contacted by CNNS, Mr. Skolnick further noted that the
striped-sleeve style of judicial robe was *de rigueur* in Nazi
Germany.

  -+- The Intelligence Connection -+-

Heading the team of prosecutors conducting the impeachment trial
is Congressman Henry Hyde. Mr. Skolnick has repeatedly reported
that Hyde oversees the CIA "Black Budget," highly-classified
accounts of how CIA spends its money. Hyde also, according to
Skolnick, is a retired Naval Reserve Commander. So with Chief
Prosecutor Hyde, we have another murky figure participating in
the developing drama.

In past reports, Ru Mills has emphasized two factions in the
intelligence "community": Faction 1 and Faction 2.

JAMA Editor Fired Over Sex Article

Picture: AP Photo

By BRENDA C. COLEMAN AP Medical Writer

CHICAGO (AP) - The editor of The Journal of the American Medical
Association was fired today, and The Associated Press learned it was
because he published a research article about college students' sexual
attitudes apparently to coincide with President Clinton's impeachment
trial.

Dr. George D. Lundberg, editor of JAMA for 17 years, confirmed he had been
called at home this morning and fired by AMA Executive Vice President E.
Ratcliffe Anderson Jr. He declined to discuss the reason or release any
other details on the advice of his attorney.

``This is a really big story, especially when you find out why,'' Lundberg,
65, said without elaborating. Until recently, he had said he hoped to break
the 25-year record for editorship of JAMA held by the late Dr. Morris
Fishbein.

The article, to be published in the Jan. 20 JAMA, explored what Americans
mean by the phrase ``had sex.''

The study of 599 college students, who were interviewed in 1991, found that
59 percent of them did not consider oral-genital contact as having ``had
sex.''

Clinton said during his grand jury testimony that oral sex was not one of
the acts covered in his definition of sexual relations. He is accused of
lying about his relationship with White House intern Monica Lewinsky and
trying to cover it up.

June M. Reinisch, author of the article, said Lundberg told her this
morning he was fired because he published the research.

``I'm absolutely shocked,'' said Reinisch, retired director of the Kinsey
Institute for Research in Sex, Gender and Reproduction in Bloomington,
Ind., which conducted the research.

``This may have to do with issues of academic freedom,'' she added in a
telephone interview. ``There was nothing unusual about this paper.''

The AMA had no immediate comment, though sources close to the organization
confirmed that the article was the reason for the firing because it
appeared politically timed to coincide with Clinton's trial.

Prosecutor Hyde, we have another murky figure

The House Commerce Committee alleged that Knight helped Tennessee
businessman and real estate developer Franklin Haney get the favorable
terms
on the lease and that in return Haney contributed $280,000 to the
Democrats.

Haney faces charges brought by a Justice Department task force
investigating
campaign finance abuses that he made nearly $80,000 in illegal
contributions
to Clinton's reelection effort and to two other candidates from Tennessee.

The House Commerce Committee investigated financial and political ties
between Haney and top Democratic officials, including Knight, over the
lease
of the Portals building in Washington, D.C. It is scheduled to become the
Federal Communications Commission's new headquarters.

The panel questioned whether $1 million payments to Knight and former
Tennessee senator Jim Sasser were illegal contingency fees and whether
they
used their political influence to gain a government lease.

[CTRL] The Deep Vince Foster

1999-01-15 Thread Brian Redman

 -Caveat Lector-

Allegations Regarding Vince Foster, the NSA, and
 Banking Transactions Spying, Part I

by J. Orlin Grabbe

On April 17, 1995, James R. Norman, Senior Editor at Forbes
Magazine, sent the following letter to Michael D. McCurry,
Press Secretary at the White house:

   "Dear Mr. McCurry:

"Forbes Magazine is preparing an article for immediate publication.
We would like to offer the White House an opportunity to comment
on the following assertions.

"1.) That Vincent W. Foster, while White House Deputy Counsel,
maintained a Swiss bank account.

"2.) That funds were paid into that account by a foreign
government, specifically the State of Israel.

"3.) That shortly before his death and coincident with the
onset of severe and acute depression, Vincent Foster learned
he was under investigation by the CIA for espionage.

"4.) That this information was made available to him by
Hillary Rodham Clinton.

"5.) That while he was White House Deputy Counsel and for
many years prior, Vincent Foster had been a behind-the-
scenes control person on behalf of the National Security
Agency for Systematics, a bank data processing company
integrally involved in a highly secret intelligence effort
to monitor world bank transactions.

"6.) That Systematics was also involved in "laundering" funds
from covert operations, including drug and arms sales related
to activities in and around Mena, Ark.

"7.) That through Systematics' relationship with E-Systems,
Vincent Foster may have had access to highly sensitive code,
encryption and data security information of strategic
importance.

"8.) That both prior to and after his death, documents relating
to Systematics were removed from Vincent Foster's office in
the White House.

"9.) That the meeting at the Cardozo (Landau) estate on the
eastern shore of Maryland on the weekend before Vincent
Foster's death was attended by, among others, George
Stephanopolous.

"10.) That Hillary Rodham Clinton was also a beneficiary of
funds from Foster's Swiss account.

"Thank you very much for your prompt attention to this matter.
Please fax your written response before end-of-business
Tuesday, April 18, to Forbes at 212-620-2417. If you have
questions, please call me at 212-620-2215.

   "Respectfully yours,

   "James R. Norman, Senior Editor"

The White House did not respond until April 25, 1995. However,
on April 20, 1995, a copy of this letter was leaked by White
House counsel to Mark H. Tuohey III, an assistant to Kenneth
Starr, a prosecutor leading an "independent" investigation of
   events related to Whitewater.

Why was the letter forward to a Starr assistant?

Did the White House have reason to believe that the death
of Vincent Foster was related to Whitewater?

Was the letter forwarded to Mark Tuohey so that he could
investigate and comment on the allegations in the letter?
Or was the letter leaked to Mark Tuohey by the White House
because Tuohey is the White House point man for spin control
with respect to any evidence "uncovered" by the investigation?

On April 25, 1995, Michael D. McCurry replied as follows:

   "Dear Mr. Norman

"This letter responds to your April 17, 1995 request.

"The allegations contained in your request are outrageous.
Publication of these false allegations will discredit
*Forbes*, maliciously tarnish the reputation of Vincent
Foster, and cause great pain to Mr. Foster's wife and family.

"Should *Forbes* insist on publishing these baseless
allegations, we insist that the Editor of *Forbes* have a pre-
publication meeting with Jane Sherburne of the White House
Counsel's Office and the personal representative of the
President and First Lady, David E. Kendall of Williams
Connolly. Ms. Sherburne can be reached at (202) 456-5116
   and Mr. Kendall's number is (202) 434-5145.

   "Sincerely,

   "Michael D. McCurry
   "Press Secretary"

   "cc: Mr. James W. Michaels
 Editor, *Forbes*

 Mr. Lawrence Minard
 Managing Editor, *Forbes*

 Mr. William Baldwin
 Executive Editor, *Forbes* "

I think we've already been through this--with millions and millions of dollars of
Scaiffe
money--not to mention 40 million dollars of taxpayer money. All these millions have
been directed at digging up dirt on Clinton. While more and more American children
are growing up in povertyand more and more working American families have no
health care. Just like the good ol' 50s, except now it takes two or three working
adults
to provide a non-living wage.

So what's Larry Flynt's paltry million dollar offer. Not even an equal shot.

I'm getting concerned that this list is leaning so heavily to the right. And I hear
that
David Duke--the Grand Old Wizard--will be running for Congress, too. Wouldn't it be
weird if it turned out that Charley Manson was right--even if his timing was off by a
decade or two.

ANTI-CLINTON ADS KNOCK BROADCASTER OFF-AIR

CNS
January 15, 1999

(CNS) – While President Bill Clinton awaits the outcome of a Senate
impeachment trial originally spawned by a "he-said, she-said"
lawsuit, a San Diego broadcaster is involved in a "he-said, he-
said" standoff with a local television station owner.

Roger Hedgcock, a talk radio host on KOGO radio and a commentator
for KUSI television, has been relieved of his TV duties following a
Tuesday broadcast in which he promoted an anti-Clinton advertising
campaign.

Hedgcock told CNS that KUSI informed him Wednesday evening that he
was "suspended until further notice," because of his TV commentary
about the "Dear Mr. President" radio campaign, in which children
read imaginary letters to Clinton seeking his advice on how to get
out of trouble for lying.

The ads have been running this week in Washington, D.C. and New
York City, and the ad's producer, San Diego songwriter Steve Vaus,
has been trying to raise money to run the ads in other cities
across the country.

"Along with Gingrich and Livingston, I've now lost my job for
advocating that Clinton lose his," said Hedgcock, who's done
commentary for KUSI since the mid-1990s and been a top-rated San
Diego broadcaster for 13 years.

According to Hedgcock, KUSI was uncomfortable with his idea of
doing a commentary about Vaus and his commercials, and the TV
station suggested he instead do a segment on pornography publisher
Larry Flynt and his quest for sexual information on Republican
Members of Congress.

But Hedgcock did the segment on Vaus Tuesday and was taken off the
air at KUSI. The following day, Hedgcock went on his radio show to
talk about the TV station's move, and asked listeners to call KUSI
to complain, a move Hedgcock said led to a telephone call from KUSI
interim news director Greg Rawdin.

"He said 'you're suspended until further notice,'" Hedgcock told
CNS. "He said 'we don't want you talking about this o the radio.'"
When contacted by CNS, Rawdin refused to comment about his
conversation with Hedgcock, but KUSI owner Mike McKinnon denied
that he or Rawdin tried to muzzle Hedgcock on his radio show.

McKinnon disputed other aspects of Hedgcock's account of the
situation as well, telling CNS that the broadcaster was put "on
hiatus" because he aired a commentary without prior station
approval. McKinnon also said Hedgcock wasn't telling the truth
about the circumstances surrounding his absence from KUSI's
airwaves.

"Roger's talking about Clinton lying - he'd better watch his own
act," said McKinnon. "We just told him that it wasn't in the
guidelines that we agreed to, and that we weren't going to let him
do it until we talked about it. This came out of the dark. He
blindsided us on this show," said McKinnon.

McKinnon told CNS that Hedgcock will remain off-the-air at KUSI
"until Roger decides to live up to his contract."

Hedgcock's TV report included an appeal for contributions to help
pay for airing the radio commercials, which McKinnon said ran afoul
of KUSI's policy regarding use of the airwaves for certain causes.
"We're not the fundraising effort for some individual to raise
money for some political campaign," said McKinnon.

Hedgcock told CNS that the TV station does hold some sway over his
commentaries, but said that it wasn't an issue in this instance.
"Under the contract, they retain a right not to air those they
don't like. They've never done that," said Hedgcock. "They didn't
say 'no, don't do it,' they said 'well, how about this Larry Flynt-
Bob Barr thing.'"

Hedgcock was referring to Flynt's release this week of information
alleging that Rep. Bob Barr (R-GA) had not been faithful to his
wife in a previous marriage. Barr is one of the 13 House managers
prosecuting the impeachment of Clinton in his Senate trial.

After disputing Hedgcock's account of the situation, McKinnon went
on to accuse Hedgcock of harassing the TV station by asking his
radio listeners to complain to KUSI about taking him off the air.

"It's kind of a typical talk show deal," said McKinnon. "These guys
get on the air and they try to harass people they don't agree
with."

"I think that's harassment. I think when he tells his viewers (sic)
to call and tie up the phone lines, that's harassing the station,"
McKinnon told CNS.

Neither Hedgcock nor McKinnon indicated that any discussions were
planned that could resolve the situation between the broadcaster
and the TV station, and whether Hedgcock is "on hiatus" or
"suspended," either term appears to be in effect indefinitely.

"Roger's the one who fired himself. I guess Roger's going to be the
guy to deal with it," said

"HILLARY bothers me a lot. I realized the other day that her
thoughts sound a lot like KARL MARX. She hangs around a lot
of MARXISTS. All her friends are MARXISTS."
 - CONGRESSMAN RICHARD ARMEY (R-TX)

PART I of 4
HILLARY RODHAM CLINTON...
UNELECTED
Official or CIA APPOINTEE?

[PORTRAIT OF THE RED QUEEN:
DELILAH'S DAUGHTER?]

I was thinking about something the other night, and I couldn't recall anybody
else ever mentioning it: You know all those lovers Clinton's so famous for? The one
thing
they all seem to have in common [not counting Clinton, himself, of course] is that they
all appear to be carbon copies of Hillary - EXCEPT FOR MONICA.

Now, Monica's looks, build, personality and temperament remind me of a young
Virginia Kelly - CLINTON'S MOM!

[Have fun with that, all you new age psychologists. Lord knows, you certainly
seem to have an awful lot of fun twisting every innocent and normal relationship we
commoners have into something sick and criminal!]

"But," as Sophia would say on GOLDEN GIRLS, "I digress." So, back to HILLARY.
What a fascinating, and most unusual AMERICAN 'First Lady.' To get a better picture of
her, let's go back to the beginning. Back to Park Ridge, Illinois. On second thought,
let's
go even farther back. All the way back to PA:

"...Scrantonians dropped whatever names they could. (Incidentally, HILLARY's
tough-minded father, HUGH RODHAM, also grew up there.) Local athletes who went on
to even lackluster collegiate careers were treated as gods...When I was about nine, A
FEW LOCAL BUSINESSMEN made the national news when they were apprehended
meeting in a hilltop mansion in APALACHIN, just across the border in southern New
York. Federal authorities said that this gathering of such fellows as New Jersey's VITO
GENOVESE, Brooklyn's PAUL CASTELLANO, and our own RUSSELL BUFFALINO [sic]
proved that the U.S. had an ORGANIZED CRIME SYNDICATE...

"I hadn't thought about the APALACHIN MEETING until I opened my SUNDAY
NEW YORK TIMES a few weeks ago and saw the headline and photo reproduced here.
The accompanying article described how this JACKSON HOLE group, primarily
sponsored by big insurance companies, hospitals, and pharmaceutical firms, had
devised a plan called MANAGED COMPETITION [we normal mortals call it ORGANIZED
CRIME - a favorite method of ROCKEFELLER and his cronies!] to 'help' HILLARY CLINTON
reform health care...The TIMES neglected to mention that most of the institutions
represented in the living room above coughed up between $33,000 and $100,000 each to
take part in the potent brain trust. This group's big idea is to promise consumers some
INITIAL choice of plans, but then, in order to maintain profits, SEVERELY RESTRICT the
CARE we can receive when we get sick. A similar PROTECTION scheme was no doubt
discussed in APALACHIN.

"When the fifty or so 'businessmen' at the APALACHIN MEETING were
apprehended (some tried to flee on foot through the woods), each one claimed that he'd
heard that his friend, the owner of the mansion, was ill, and that he'd independently
decided to visit the poor fellow that particular day...The MEDICAL SYNDICATE has
offered us a clear picture. If we really want to enact health-care reform, we should
lock
up these JACKSON HOLE guys." [1]

Did the apple fall far from the tree? We know that both CLINTONS have had a
great deal of the documentation from their earlier life deleted, so not much is known
about HILLARY's parents [only the "official" biographies]. What IS known, however,
gives us an interesting vignette of a very UNUSUAL First Lady:

"DOROTHY HOWELL [HILLARY'S MOTHER]...was born in 1919 into the blue-collar
tenements of South Chicago, the daughter of a fireman and of a half-Canadian mother
who was all but illiterate. Part of the vast migration of the era, the family moved to
southern California, where Dorothy grew up in the sunlit, but bittersweet, promise of
the
Los Angeles basin. At high school in Alhambra, she was a member of the scholarship
society, an admired athlete, and an energetic organizer of student
activities...Intelligent
and pretty, with a compelling smile and an abiding sense of independence..." [obviously
HILLARY got a lot from her mom, wouldn't you say?] In 1937, at the age of 18, Dorothy
moved back to Chicago and got a job with the COLUMBIA LACE COMPANY - where her
future husband HUGH RODHAM worked.

"Dorothy Howell was sadly ahead of her time, enjoying a brief relative
independence during the depression and war years and ever after yearning for an
equity and opportunity painfully denied in her married life...When Pearl Harbor came
she was still a working girl, seeing Rodham but with hopes for higher education. She
now put off college indefinitely, and they were finally married in 1942." [2]

Title: Counter-Culture - New Science - Memetic Engineering

Memetic Engineering

Speak your mind in theCounter-Culture Forum

Coined by zoologist Richard Dawkins in his
controversial book 'TheSelfish Gene' (1975), the 'meme' is the study
of ideas which replicate and transmit themselves via the human mind
the way a virus does in a biological host.Important early scientific
studies were conducted by Daniel C. Dennett and Douglas Hofstadter
in the 1980s, before a climate of viral metaphors(Ebola, AIDS) and a
rapidly growing hedonistic cyberculture helped popularize the
memetics field in the 1990s.
Memetic engineering developed from diverse influences, including
cutting edge physics of consciousness and memetics research, chaos
theory, semiotics, culture jamming, military information warfare,
and the viral texts of iconoclasts William S. Burroughs, J.G.
Ballard, and Genesis P-Orridge.
The savvy memetic engineer is able to isolate, study, and subtly
manipulate the underlying values systems, symbolic balance and
primal atavisms that unconsciously influence the individual psyche
and collective identity. A highly educated but susceptible
intelligentsia, worldwide travel, and information vectors like the
Internet and cable television means that hysterical epidemics and
disinformation campaigns will become more common. This warfare will
be conducted using aesthetics, symbols, and doctrines as camouflage
that will ultimately influence our cultural meme pool. These
contemporary 'life conditions' are explored in books like Carl
Sagan's 'The Demon Haunted World', John Brockman's 'The Third
Culture', and Michael Shermer's 'Why People Believe Weird Things.'
Fictional descriptions of memetic engineering include Isaac
Asimov's seminal 'Foundation' series, G.I. Gurdjieff's 'Beelzebub's
Tales To His Grandson', Neil Stephenson's 'Snow Crash', and Robert
W. Chambers' unearthly 'The King In Yellow' tome. Political examples
of memetic engineering include Adolf Hitler's 'Mein Kampf',
Zhirinovksy's 'Black Book', and Muammar Quadaffi's 'Green
Book.'

Spiral Dynamics
Mind-blowing site that combines Richard Dawkins'
concept of the 'meme' with the optimal psychology of Mihalyi
Csikzentmihalyi, and the pioneering 'Bio-Psycho-Social'
framework of Clare W. Graves. 'Spiral Dynamics' differs from
other memetics sites in being oriented towards open-ended
evolving values systems. It reveals the hidden codes that shape
human nature, create global diversities, and drive evolutionary
change. The methodologies have been successfully applied in a
wide variety of contexts, including transforming South Africa
out of race categories, revitalizing local communities and
sporting teams, and designing organizational and marketing
systems for blue chip corporate firms and top-level government
sectors. Mandatory reading if you want to actually be Asimov's
Hari Seldon.

Aaron
Lynch's Thought Contagion
Lynch is an ex-Fermilab physicist who has studied
memetics full-time since1986. His landmark book 'Thought
Contagion: How Belief Spreads Through Society' (1996) contained
a wealth of scientific information. This site contains book
excerpts, scientific papers, core mathematical data, and
analyses of various thought contagion plagues. A growing wealth
ofinformation for the specialist.

Richard Brodie's Meme Central
Brodie is an ex-Microsoft software developer who
popularized memetic engineering with his populist book 'Virus of
the Mind' (1996). This site contains book excerpts,
de-programming advice, and links to the rapidly growing memetics
community. A useful starting point for the memetic engineering
newbie.

No...except the name calling ends up in my mailbox..I do enjoy your other
post, which you write with foresight and thought, so I start reading these name
calling ones...which is aggravating, because it lessens my opinion of you in a
way. I mean right after reading a great post of yours, which I enjoyed
immensely...you lower yourself to this.IMHO

If you think that it is proper to use the Lord's name in vain with a
curse whilst making my opinion again you are sadly mistaken.

That was an example...and I forgot to blank out another letter,,,and besides
that I did not type it all out nor did I use a capital G which would denote our

And as for your syntax advice, . . . . Many times my remarks have been followed

Why are you defending HawK's hypocrisy with your innanities about name-calling

I am not defending Hawk if you would notice...I should you how to use correct
syntax if you so wanted to continue doing this..this way no one gets into any
legal trouble.

We have gotten off on a tangent here...with this name calling and would like to
see your intelligent comments, which I so enjoy, with this topic and get back
discussing facts.

Oh and thanks for calling me stupid. Do you have documentation?

I was giving examples...in all of my post I was calling anyone anything.

Like I said after posting an example "After reading this thought I would let
you know that, that was only an example..Iamnot calling Hawk.

However now that I think of it..even though I did not call you stupid ...I
said "it seems that you are acting quite stupid, to be doing this to your list.
I knowyou payfor it, but you have to set standards..well you have but your
not following them." A list owner usually set the tone of the list, at least in
 my observations.

Like I said before, I do enjoy reading some of your other posts, but for some
reason you don't seem to use this logic when addressing Hawk. I don't know why.

  it

seems that you are acting quite stupid, to be doing this to your list. I
 know
 you pay

Anyhow you catch the drift you got to use a word like seems, appears, looks
 like,
 or I

think can help you call names in a more efficient manner...

OkI will help Hawk out here..with his response to ignorant..when he
 uses
 the word

stupid. He should be saying something like this..it seems...I think..in my
 opinion
 you

are stupid because you are calling me names and not proving a G##-Dam%
 thing.
  Well

that is what he could say if he uses those words.

Re: [CTRL] [CIA-DRUGS] cato - How Presidents Run the Country

 -Caveat Lector-

The U.S. Constitution is actually quite clear on the President's "power".
"Executive orders" according to Constitutional Law would be binding ONLY
within "the Federal Zone" (Wasington D.C., U.S. "possessions") and/or upon
Federal Officers, Employers and Employees.

The framers of the Constitution were poignantly aware of the axiom that
absolute power corrupts absolutely, and they could hardly be said to have
put together a document the defines the Executive branch's power "very
generally" by anyone with the slightest shred of common sense and a little
Constitutional scholarship.

Any think tank that spit out such a concept should have it's thinker's
license revoked. sarcasm
A long revolutionary war against a tyrannical monarchy, and the
Constitutional framers are going to create a document in which the Chief
Executive officer's power is defined "very generally"?!
Get a grip.

Unfortunately, the Constitution is merely an interesting historical document
according to today's courts, legislature, and executive. (and the Cato
institute.)
If the government could be forced to conform to the Constitution we could
then be rid of the alphabet agencies.
Not to mention the unconstitutional private national bank incorporated as
the "Federal Reserve Bank" ... or the immortal form of the corporation,
period... blantantly unconstitutional and certain to lead to where we are
today, which is a place of an over-powerful unconstitutional Federal
dictatorship tacitly coordinated by the corrupt judiciary, executive, and
legislative branches.

If the Federal government (spearheaded by the criminal indictment-ridden
Executive branch) is successful in continuing to dismantle constitutional
law as it is attempting to do in it's assault against the:

Executive Summary

During the recent presidential scandals, concluding with the impeachment of
President Clinton, many people were heard to say that the investigations
should end so that the president could get back to “the business of running
the country.” Under a constitution dedicated to individual liberty and
limited government—which divides, separates, and limits power—how did we
get to a point where so many Americans think of government as embodied in
the president and then liken him to a man running a business?

The answer rests in part with the growth of presidential rule through
executive orders and national emergencies. Unfortunately, the Constitution
defines presidential powers very generally; and nowhere does it define,
much less limit, the power of a president to rule by executive order—except
by reference to that general language and the larger structure and function
of the Constitution. The issue is especially acute when presidents use
executive orders to legislate, for then they usurp the powers of Congress
or the states, raising fundamental concerns about the separation and
division of powers.

The problem of presidential usurpation of legislative power has been with
us from the beginning, but it has grown exponentially with the expansion of
government in the 20th century. In enacting program after program, Congress
has delegated more and more power to the executive branch. Thus, Congress
has not only failed to check but has actually abetted the expansion of
presidential power. And the courts have been all but absent in restraining
presidential lawmaking.

Nevertheless, the courts have acted in two cases—in 1952 and 1996—laying
down the principles of the matter; the nation’s governors have just forced
President Clinton to rewrite a federalism executive order; and now there
are two proposals in Congress that seek to limit presidential lawmaking.
Those developments offer hope that constitutional limits—and the separation
and division of powers, in particular—may eventually be restored.

LEGALIZE IT!

Cannabis sativa is a low-maintenance crop that can be used in paper,
clothing, rope-even cars. So why, when it's grown in 32 other countries, is
hemp still illegal in the United States?

I confess that i am a user of hemp. for example, i have just quaffed a
Hempen Ale and a Hempen Gold beer, shipped to me by Frederick Brewing
Company of Frederick, Maryland. Both beverages are brewed with the seeds of
hemp-Cannabis sativa-a plant native to central Asia and grown all over the
world as various selected strains, some of which are known as marijuana.
I'm feeling a faint buzz, but only from the alcohol.

Neither brew contains any of the narcotic delta-9 tetrahydrocannabinol
(THC), which makes pot so popular. In fact, recent tests by the Pentagon
invalidate what it calls the "Hempen Ale defense" by showing the ale to be
THC-free. So military personnel can no longer claim it as the source of the
THC that shows up in their urine. But some hemp products do contain trace
amounts of THC-as intoxicating as, say, the opiates you get from a
poppy-seed bagel-so to make sure it knows where the THC is coming from, the
Air Force has banned all foods and beverages made with hemp. Somehow the
news didn't make it to the Commander in Chief, who, less than a month
later, on February 15, 1999, allowed Hempen Gold to be served on Air Force
One. According to one reporter, the President "tasted but didn't swallow."

After I finished ingesting hemp I slathered it on my hair-in the form of a
shampoo made with hempseed oil, which, according to its producer, Alterna
Applied Research Laboratories of Beverly Hills, California, restores dry
and damaged (but unfortunately not missing) hair. While perky hair is not
something I normally seek, the hair I have left definitely feels that way.

What I have just indulged in-at least according to Glenn Levant, the
nation's best-funded and most heeded marijuana educator-is an
internal-external marijuana orgy. Levant is president and founder of Drug
Abuse Resistance Education (DARE), a 16-year-old program taught by local
police in 75 percent of the nation's schools. "Hemp is marijuana," he
informed me, ending the interview when I cited sources that prove
otherwise. Last year Levant was outraged to see Alterna's hemp-leaf logo on
shampoo ads at bus stops around southern California, and he mounted a
successful crusade to get them removed. "My big objection is that public
property was being used to promote an illegal substance," he told the Los
Angeles Times. "The shampoo is a subterfuge to promote marijuana." On July
1, 1999, he paid Alterna an undisclosed sum to settle a lawsuit it had
filed against him for making what it called "false and malicious public
comments" about its product and motives.

Hemp and marijuana can cross-pollinate, but if one is the other, then a
Pekinese is a Doberman pinscher. Plant a hemp seed, and no substance or
force on earth can turn it into marijuana. If you smoke hemp, it will give
you only a headache. This is because it doesn't contain enough THC to
affect your brain. And, unlike marijuana, it is high in cannabidiol-an
antipsychoactive compound that inhibits THC. Because of this, says David
West, a plant breeder hired by the University of Hawaii to grow an
experimental plot of hemp under special permit from the Drug Enforcement
Administration (DEA), hemp "could be called antimarijuana."

Hemp products are not illegal. In fact, the U.S. hemp-products industry
does about $125 million in retail sales a year. Not only is hemp harmless,
it has enormous versatility. Added to worthless fibers that are currently
burned-such as straw from oats, rice, and wheat-hemp can produce superb
paper and construction materials lighter and stronger than lumber. American
cropland, 85 percent of which is stuck on a soil-depleting,
chemical-dependent treadmill of corn, wheat, and soybean production, could
be released and renewed if hemp were used as a rotation crop. In England
and Hungary, hemp grown in rotation with wheat hiked the wheat harvest 20
percent. Hemp seeds, better tasting and more digestible than soy, could be
rendered into hundreds of foods, thereby taking pressure off America's
bottomland hardwood forests, which are being replaced with soybean
plantations.

Hemp fibers can be woven into cloth more durable than and as comfortable as
cotton. Cotton is much more difficult to grow; it's addicted to chemical
