Hofman II | Sunday, July 30, 2006 Today we awaken to the dreadful news, according to the Associated Press, that the Israelis bombed several homes in the southern Lebanon village of Qana early Sunday, "killing at least 56 people, most of them children, in the deadliest attack in 19 days" Even Jack Straw, the former British Foreign Secretary, said of the Israeli attacks: "These are not surgical strikes, but have instead caused death and misery among innocent civilians." This is the second Israeli mass murder at Qana. In 1996, Israelis murdered nearly 100 Arab civilian refugees at a United Nations camp in Qana. The Israeli holocaust against Lebanon continues, while the world does nothing. Ever more Arab women and children in Lebanon are murdered with impunity. They are less than human in the eyes of the West. Nothing like this would ever be permitted if it were Judaic children who were dying. In such a case, the words, "The Holocaust is happening again, the world must not stand by silent!" would reverberate from every pulpit, radio, TV and newspaper front page in America. But since it is the children of Lebanon who are being killed, "sub-human Amalekites" according to the secret teaching of the Orthodox rabbis, the US obstructs a ceasefire, with help from American journalists, editors, clergymen and the US Congress. This is a shame, and a disgrace. It proves that the perpetual, pious human rights tears shed over the "Nazi Holocaust against the Jews" in schools, churches and national museums and memorials day-in-and-day out, have nothing to do with ensuring that it "never happens again" to "any other people." Rather, "The Holocaust" is a cynical power-politics hammer used to build special privileges and a sense of sacred awe and racial superiority for Judaics, which in turn renders them forever immune from war crimes prosecutions, or any interdiction of the holocausts which they perpetrate against Palestine and Lebanon. If "The Holocaust" was a true human rights lobby for all mankind, then Elie Wiesel, Deborah Lipstadt and Steven Spielberg would be using their clout and prestige to demand an immediate end to Israeli mass murder in Lebanon. Instead, Wiesel is on record supporting Israeli bombing in Lebanon, while the vast majority of the Israeli people, including the "Holocaust Survivors" among them, also endorse it. "Holocaust" propaganda has dulled the moral sense of the West. The "Holocaust" is little more than an arm of Zionist psychological warfare for the maintenance of Judaic superiority, racial and ethical, throughout the earth, not for saving the lives of other marginalized peoples. In fact, it seems to have given the Israelis a hubris as supra-human ethicists with a license to kill civilians without moral qualms or the least fear of war crime prosecution. No doubt the movie Spielberg will make about what is happening in Lebanon, will show Israeli commanders and troops agonizing about their bombings. But in reality there are no such reservations, just exultation and the arrogance of stone-cold killers swaggering in the knowledge that their murder spree is backed by US super-power money and might. (The Israelis are not so brave when they have to confront Hezbollah militiamen on the ground, man-to-man, rather than from 30,000 feet up in the cockpit of a jet-bomber). The racial and moral superiority engendered for the Israelis by "Nazi Holocaust" propaganda is was why the massacre at Qana in 1996 was forgotten; allowing it to happen all over again in 2006. "Never again"? Ha! "Never Again" does not apply when it comes to Israeli extermination of the people of Lebanon, according to an exact Zionist timetable that brooks no "ceasefire." The Israelis will cease fire when every Lebanese woman and child they intend to slaughter is properly dead and buried, and not before. And the "Nazi Holocaust"-saturated human rights campaigners will sit on their hands, exactly as they have been trained to do by Spielberg and Wiesel, and a parade of professors and preachers. Tears, guilt, classroom curricula, movies and museums are reserved for the victims of the Nazis. Cluster bombs, napalm, missiles and cannon shells are reserved for helpless Arab mothers and their children, with applause from Hillary, Elie and four hundred members of the House of Representatives. Why the Jews Didn't Resist

Israel's most potent psychological weapon is the holocaust. The Zionist battle cry is "Never again!"
In a previous article, I suggested that the real motivation behind traumatic events like Hiroshima and Sept. 11 might be to impose a new mental paradigm upon humanity. Because of the holocaust, the world became convinced that Jews needed their own country. The Palestinians were identified (in many minds) with the Nazis, and the Israelis were given moral sanction to drive them from their homes and subjugate them. Criticism of Israel is often equated with Nazi anti Semitism.
As a psychological weapon, the holocaust also serves an array of new world order causes.
The world is divided into heroic victims (Jews) and haters (Nazis). The "victims", who are championed by Rockefeller liberals, include oppressed women, homosexuals, and the minority flavor-of-the-day. The "haters" are the intolerant people who defend the things the globalists want to destroy: nuclear family, religion, democracy, individualism and nationhood. The haters are "right-wingers" for whom the tolerant liberals have "zero tolerance."
It is not my intention to mitigate Nazi responsibility for the Jewish holocaust but to scrutinize its use by Zionists and globalists as a psychological weapon. Before I continue, I had better declare myself.
I am a non-observant, non-self-hating Canadian Jew who believes in God and Christ's gospel of love. My grandparents all died in the holocaust; my parents narrowly survived by passing as non-Jews. I lived in Israel in 1972-3 but left because Israelis seemed as materialistic as Canadians. Israel also struck me as a country that devoured its own people.
Nevertheless I remained a Zionist until recently when I discovered its hidden imperialist character. Still, I support Israel's existence within the 1967 boundaries, with restitution to the Palestinians. I believe most Israelis and Jews have been hoodwinked as I was.
DEFENDING A PSYCHIC MONOPOLY
The definitive history of the Holocaust is "The Destruction of the European Jews" by Rolf Hilberg, a Jewish professor of Political Science at the University of Vermont. Hilberg's three-volume work is largely based on meticulous Nazis documentation.
Hilberg could barely get his book published because he documented the extent to which the Nazis depended on the Jewish Councils ("Judenrat") to administer the final solution, and the lack of any real Jewish resistance. He estimated that fewer than 200 Nazis died due to Jewish resistance.
Why the negative reaction? Hilberg concluded that the mythology of the holocaust requires that the victims appear to be heroic, and to be engaged in a struggle, however unequal. In fact, the Jews went to their death like lambs to the slaughter. (Hilberg, The Politics of Memory p.135)
In the 1960's the Jewish philosopher Hannah Arendt was slandered and ostracized when she concluded from Hilberg that "almost without exception" the Jewish leadership cooperated with the Nazis.
In her book, "Eichmann in Jerusalem" she wrote, "In Amsterdam as in Warsaw, in Berlin as in Budapest, Jewish officials could be trusted to compile the list of persons, and of their property, to secure money from the deportees to defray the expenses of their deportation and extermination, to keep track of vacated apartments, to supply police forces to help seize Jews and get them on trains, until, as a last gesture, they handed over the assets of the Jewish community in good order for final confiscation. The reason Jews went quietly is not a mystery. Jewish leadership betrayed them. Hilberg attributes it partly to an age-old Jewish habit of persevering in the face of overwhelming odds. The German army rations have not been all that good, but you managed to survive. Spring came late that year, with weeks of cold rainy weather in demolished Europe. Your boots are tattered, your uniform is falling apart, and the stress of surrender and the confusion that lies ahead for you has your guts being torn out. Now, it is over, you must surrender or be shot. This is war and the real world. You are taken as a German Prisoner of War into American hands. The Americans had 200 such Prisoner of War camps scattered across Germany. You are marched to a compound surrounded with barbed wire fences as far as the eye can see. Thousands upon thousands of your fellow German soldiers are already in this make-shift corral. You see no evidence of a latrine and after three hours of marching through the mud of the spring rain, the comfort of a latrine is upper-most in your mind. You are driven through the heavily guarded gate and find yourself free to move about, and you begin the futile search for the latrine. Finally, you ask for directions, and are informed that no such luxury exists. No more time. You find a place and squat. First you were exhausted, then hungry, then fearful, and now--dirty. Hundreds more German prisoners are behind you, pushing you on, jamming you together and every one of them searching for the latrine as soon as they could do so. Now, late in the day, there is no space to even squat, much less sit down to rest your weary legs. None of the prisoners, you quickly learn, have had any food that day, in fact there was no food while in the American hands that any surviving prisoner can testify to. No one has eaten any food for weeks, and they are slowly starving and dying. But, they can't do this to us! There are the Geneva Convention rules for the treatment of Prisoners of War. There must be some mistake! Hope continues through the night, with no shelter from the cold, biting rain. Your uniform is sopping wet, and formerly brave soldiers are weeping all around you, as buddy after buddy dies from the lack of food, water, sleep and shelter from the weather. After weeks of this, your own hope bleeds off into despair, and finally you actually begin to envy those who, having surrendered first manhood and then dignity, now also surrender life itself. More hopeless weeks go by. Finally, the last thing you remember is falling, unable to get up, and lying face down in the mud mixed with the excrement of those who have gone before. Your body will be picked up long after it is cold, and taken to a special tent where your clothing is stripped off. So that you will be quickly forgotten, and never again identified, your dog-tag is snipped in half and your body along with those of your fellow soldiers are covered with chemicals for rapid decomposition and buried. You were not one of the exceptions, for more than one million seven hundred thousand German Prisoners of War died from a deliberate policy of extermination by starvation, exposure, and disease -under direct orders of General Dwight David Eisenhower. One month before the end of World War 11, General Eisenhower issued special orders concerning the treatment of German Prisoners and specific in the language of those orders was this statement, "Prison enclosures are to provide no shelter or other comforts." Eisenhower biographer Stephen Ambrose, who was given access to the Eisenhower personal letters, states that he proposed to exterminate the entire German General Staff, thousands of people, after the war. Eisenhower, in his personal letters, did not merely hate the Nazi Regime, and the few who imposed its will down from the top, but that he hated the German people as a race. It was his personal intent to destroy as many of them as he could, and one way was to wipe out as many prisoners of war as possible. Of course, that was illegal under International law, so he issued an order on March 10, 1945 and verified by his initials on a cable of that date, that German Prisoners of War be redesignated as "Disarmed Enemy Forces" called in these reports as DEF. Shelton IV David Cesarani, professor of history at Southampton University and historian for this month's Holocaust Memorial Day commemorations in England, has raised quite a ruckus. In an essay entitled Britain, the Holocaust, and its Legacy http://www.holocaustmemorialday.gov.uk/sections/national/dcarticle.htm, he praises the courage and sacrifice of the British people in their fight against Hitler but qualifies that sentiment by saying, "Questions remain over whether more could have been done, and sooner, to succor the victims of Nazi persecution." The general point Cesarani is trying to make, in a rather diplomatic, round-about way, is that Great Britain did not sacrifice the lives of its young soldiers fast enough in dealing with Hitler's persecution of the Jewish people. Minor issues like England's national security should have taken a back seat to the plight of those being persecuted on the other side of the Channel. Sadly, this seems to be the prevailing view of World War II when it comes to the Holocaust. Too many countries were more concerned about their own national security interests than about the hate crimes being carried out by the Nazis. I'm waiting to see a formal charge leveled against America for its lack of involvement in the European conflict prior to December 1941. Cesarani doesn't stop at accusing England of being slow out of the gate in its race against Hitler's genocidal juggernaut. He goes on to say, "The British government pursued a policy of normal relations with Germany and later sought to appease Hitler. The attempt to mollify and buy off Hitler only encouraged him and legitimated Nazi racism." In essence, he is suggesting that England, by maintaining diplomatic and economic ties to Germany, placed its seal of approval on the extermination of the Jews. But that isn't the worst part of Cesarani's message. In an effort to turn the Holocaust into a platform for a more globalized, socialist agenda, he goes on to say: “The world is a smaller place today, but we should never cease to remind our government that it is responsible for the defense of human and civil rights of the citizens of other countries, and to encourage it to maximize the provision for those fleeing repression and deliberate disadvantage, and to seek justice against those who violate human and civil rights.” If Cesarani seriously believes that this is the responsibility of the government of Great Britain, imagine what he thinks America's role in global politics should be. Globalists like Cesarani believe the Holocaust justifies any action a state may take against another as long as it's in the name of "human rights." They believe it is the duty of superpowers to police the world in an attempt to nip the threat of genocide in the bud. At last year's commemoration, Prime Minister Tony Blair called the Holocaust "the greatest act of collective evil the world has ever known." If people actually believe that, they will stop at nothing to ensure that it never happens again, even if it means giving up the idea of maintaining any semblance of national sovereignty. I don't mean to mix cultural or religious metaphors but the Holocaust is a sacred cow, not just in Jewish history but also in world history. We are constantly reminded of the importance of never forgetting what happened 60 years ago, lest we be doomed to repeat it. As far as that goes, I completely agree. It is vitally important that we remember the past. The atrocities of Nazi Germany must never be forgotten, but at the same time we should not be so selective in our remembrance of history. By calling what went on in Germany during World War II " The Holocaust," we tend to overlook what was going on at the exact same time in Russia. Very little attention has been paid to the holocaust under Josef Stalin. Over the years, Nazi Germany has been so successfully demonized that even one of the bloodiest, most oppressive regimes in the history of civilization, the Soviet Union, is not as vilified as Hitler's Third Reich. Why? Because the Holocaust has become a vehicle for globalists and socialists. The Holocaust is held up as a symbol of the cruelty of fascism, a system of government that oppresses one group of people in favor of another. That goes against the grain of those who preach tolerance and acceptance. Communism, on the other hand, oppresses everyone equally; except for a few government officials, there are no favorites in communist nations. No one seems to mind that Stalin killed millions more people than Hitler for the simple reason that Stalin's motivation was perceived to be political, not racial. With all the millions of other victims who are injured or killed
each year in other tragedies, is this a precedent for government
intrusion and involvement in the insurance business? We understand
that cities have to be rebuilt and people need help doing this kind
of thing but there are such things that approach being acts of the
deities, occurrences that defy forethought and expectation that
become demands in the afterthunk up expectations of victims. I

NEW YORK (AP) - Several dozen family members of World Trade Center
victims and four members of Congress on Sunday called for revisions
to the interim rules governing the federal victims' compensation
fund.
``It would be terrible if the families of those victims were to be
victimized again by the regulations that are being enacted by the
special master,'' Rep. Peter King (news - bio - voting record) said
at a news conference.
Special Master Kenneth Feinberg, the lawyer appointed to oversee the
government fund, said he hoped to address the concerns.
Under the rules announced by Feinberg on Dec. 20, the compensation
that family members receive would depend on the victim's family size,
age and earnings. Feinberg has said that the average family would
receive about $1.6 million.
The regulations give the family of each victim $250,000 for non-
economic losses such as pain and suffering. Life insurance and
pension fund payments would be subtracted from the awards, but
charitable contributions would not.
``We're talking about a $250,000 cap,'' said Rep. Felix Grucci (news - bio - voting
record), a Republican. ``You could slip and fall on the sidewalk as you walk out of
here - and I'm not suggesting that anybody do that -
but probably earn more on a slip-and-fall claim than these people will get for losing
their loved ones.''
Relatives who apply to the fund would largely give up their right to sue.
Beverly Eckert said she was on the phone with her husband, Sean Rooney, who worked at
Aon Corp. in the south tower of the World Trade Center, for the last half-hour of his
life until the tower collapsed.
``This is about fairness,'' Eckert said. ``We're here because the figure that Special
Master Kenneth Feinberg selected for pain and suffering in no way represents what the
people who died went through.''
When asked about the $250,000 award for pain and suffering, Feinberg said, ``We're
reviewing all the regulations. I am concerned that there are families of the victims
who are troubled by this.''
Feinberg has until Jan. 21 to finalize the rules.

(Hebrew Molech, king).
A divinity worshipped by the idolatrous Israelites. The Hebrew
pointing Molech does not represent the original pronunciation of the
name, any more than the Greek vocalization Moloch found in the LXX
and in the Acts (vii, 43). The primitive title of this god was very
probably Melech, king, the consonants of which came to be combined
through derision with the vowels of the word Bosheth, shame. As the
word Moloch (A.V. Molech) means king, it is difficult in several
places of the Old Testament to determine whether it should be
considered as the proper name of a deity or as a simple appellative.
The passages of the original text in which the name stands probably
for that of a god are Lev., xviii, 21; xx, 2-5; III (A. V. I) Kings,
xi, 7; IV (II) Kings, xxiii, 10; Is., xxx, 33; lvii, 9; Jer., xxxii,
35. The chief feature of Moloch's worship among the Jews seems to
have been the sacrifice of children, and the usual expression for
describing that sacrifice was to pass through the fire, a rite
carried out after the victims had been put to death. The special
centre of such atrocities was just outside of Jerusalem, at a place
called Tophet (probably place of abomination), in the valley of
Geennom. According to III (I) Kings, xi, 7, Solomon erected a
temple for Moloch on the hill over against Jerusalem, and on this
account he is at times considered as the monarch who introduced the
impious cult into Israel. After the disruption, traces of Moloch
worship appear in both Juda and Israel. The custom of causing one's
children to pass through the fire seems to have been general in the
Northern Kingdom [IV (II) Kings, xvii, 17; Ezech. xxiii, 37], and it
gradually grew in the Southern, encouraged by the royal example of
Achaz (IV Kings, xvi, 3) and Manasses [IV (II) Kings, xvi, 6] till it
became prevalent in the time of the prophet Jeremias (Jerem. xxxii,
35), when King Josias suppressed the worship of Moloch and defiled
Tophet [IV (II) Kings, xxiii, 13 (10)]. It is not improbable that
this worship was revived under Joakim and continued until the
Babylonian Captivity.
On the basis of the Hebrew reading of III (I) Kings, xi, 7, Moloch has often been
identified with Milcom, the national god of the Ammonites, but this identification
cannot be considered as probable: as shown by the Greek
Versions, the original reading of III (I) Kings, xi, 7, was not Molech but Milchom
[cf. also III (I) Kings, xi, 5, 33]; and according to Deut., xii, 29-31; xviii, 9-14,
the passing of children through fire was of Chanaani
te origin [cf. IV (II) Kings, xvi, 3]. Of late, numerous attempts have been made to
prove that in sacrificing their children to Moloch the Israelites simply thought that
they were offering them in holocaust to Yahweh. In
other words, the Melech to whom child-sacrifices were offered was Yahweh under another
name. To uphold this view appeal is made in particular to Jer., vii, 31; xix, 5, and
to Ezech., xx, 25-31. But this position is to say
the least improbable. The texts appealed to may well be understood otherwise, and the
prophets expressly treat the cult of Moloch as foreign and as an apostasy from the
worship of the true God. The offerings by fire, the
probable identity of Moloch with Baal, and the fact that in Assyria and Babylonia
Malik, and at Palmyra Malach-bel, were sun-gods, have suggested to many that Moloch
was a fire- or sun- god.

For nearly 60 years the portraits and landscapes by some of the most renowned French artists of his day were kept from public view and from their rightful heirs. Now a Vietnam veteran named Gerald McDonald, who lives in west suburban Lyons, plans to claim the collection as Freund's great-great-nephew. My relatives spent most of their lives trying to find this collection, but nobody knew where it was or how to get it, McDonald said of the paintings that recently resurfaced at The Jewish Museum in Prague, in the Czech Republic. I never even was sure it existed. Though separated by generations, Freund and McDonald are linked by blood, history and art. Their story--a tale of loss and repatriation--spans the 20th Century, several wars and radically different lives. Freund belonged to Prague's social elite, while McDonald worked with his hands, toiling at a southwest suburban chemical plant. Freund collected rarefied landscapes and portraits of the post-Impressionist period, while McDonald covered the walls of his two-bedroom ranch home in Lyons with inexpensive folk art and posters. Though the restitution of Freund's collection, potentially worth millions of dollars, holds out the possibility of newfound wealth for McDonald, it already has fundamentally altered McDonald's view of himself. I never even knew I was partly Jewish, said McDonald, who was baptized Lutheran but, like his family, never practiced religion. Whenever I asked my family if it was possible [that they had Jewish roots], they always said no. Earlier this year, Freund's art collection belatedly went on public view at The Jewish Museum in Prague, which despite continued efforts had been unable to locate heirs of Czech Holocaust victims whose art was looted by the Nazis. The museum estimates that it holds hundreds of such works. Hoping to jump-start the process of restitution, officials at the museum asked the Art Loss Register, a clearinghouse for stolen art, to help find Holocaust victims' heirs. In a last-ditch effort to learn the whereabouts of Freund's relatives, the Art Loss Register contacted the Tribune, suspecting that Freund's siblings might have lived in Chicago's large Czech community. The newspaper searched public records and death announcements to piece together a family tree, which indicated McDonald was a living heir. Voter registration records led to him. McDonald had heard his relatives talk about the collection but doubted its existence. At one point he contemplated launching his own search but was dissuaded. After Vietnam, I wanted to go to Czechoslovakia and look up my family and anything I could find, but my relatives in Chicago said, `Don't go, it's all gone, forget about it,' McDonald said. Some of my relatives kept on hoping they might find the collection, but the rest of us gave up on it, said McDonald, who believes he may be Freund's last surviving heir. While McDonald could use the money from selling the valuable collection--I just spent $72 on a fish tank, and I was feeling guilty about it--he expressed doubts that he will want to part with it. How do you set a price for something that represents someone else's suffering? Officials at The Jewish Museum in Prague believe they are in possession of only a fraction of Freund's collection, with some of the 30 works worth $1million or more each. The return of Freund's paintings may open the door for other restitution cases, museum officials say. If we can return the art to the heir, we will be showing the world that some justice can happen, and maybe people will start coming forward to make claims, said Michaela Hajkova, curator of paintings, drawings and graphic art at the museum, which took possession of the Freund collection from the Czech government late last year. McDonald's claim will be made easier by a new Czech law, which says that art stolen by the Nazis must be returned to heirs even if they are not Czech citizens, as was previously required. In turning over looted works to The Jewish Museum in Prague, the Czech government mandated the institution to find heirs like McDonald. -Caveat Lector- It was Assistant Sec. of War John J. McCloy who nixed the rail line bombing. He claimed it was because it would have provoked retaliation against the Jews. One cannot but wonder what he had in mind. Later McCloy was High Commissioner for Occupied Germany. He turned loose many, many Nazi war criminals, long before their sentences were up. These included Otto Ambros. Auschwitz was intended, first and foremost, to be synthetic rubber and synthetic fuel factory complex. The more well known dead Jews were to be merely a by-product. In charge of synthetic rubber production was Otto Ambros, who also had developed the root technology on which magnetic data storage is based. He was convicted of 25,000 counts of slavery and mass murder, and was sentenced to eight years in prison. ( ! ) After three and a half years, McCloy freed him. The head of the W.R. Grace Co., J. Peter Grace (a Knight of Malta) later hired Ambros as a research chemist and petitioned Congress to allow his emigration to the United States. This is the same J. Peter Grace who President Reagan appointed to head the so-called "Grace Commission" to make the United States government more "efficient." According to Treason's Peace by Howard Watson Armbruster, Beechurst Press, New York, 1947, p 386: "The Assistant Secretary of War, until 1940 was a member of the law firm of Cravath, de Gersdorff, Swain Wood, which firm . . . had been representing I.G. Farben or its affiliates in the United States. It may appear to be a coincidence that Mr. McCloy should have turned up in the War Department in 1941 in a position in which he could speak with authority on such matters as handling the destruction of that mainstay of Germany's war potential -- I.G. Farben." Later still, McCloy served on the infamous Warren Commission, which used the laws of physics defying Magic Bullet theory to cover up the coup of 11-22-63. McCloy was particularly thorough at covering up the role in the coup of certain Nazi war criminals who had been brought to America after the war to serve in American intelligence and science. Defendants in the suit, which was filed in Manhattan federal court, are the soon-to-be opened Museum of Jewish Heritage and the New York Holocaust Memorial Commission, which was appointed by former New York City Mayor Edward Koch. The plaintiffs, more than a dozen rabbis from Brooklyn and two Roman Catholics from the borough of Queens, alleged the use of public funds to commemorate only one religious group of Holocaust victims was unconstitutional. It's unlikely ever to be determined whether these devices had anything to do with starting the fires that roared through the Branch Davidians' Mt. Carmel, killing more than 80 people, including 17 children. The fact remains that the FBI covered up the use of these devices; when asked by a reporter in August if she was "embarrassed" to have been "misled" by the agency for six years, Reno replied, through clenched teeth, no, she was not embarrassed, she was "very, very upset."In quite a large part, she had Michael McNulty to thank (or blame) for that. McNulty is the chief researcher and a coproducer of two documentaries, the 1997 Waco: The Rules of Engagement and the follow-up Waco: A New Revelation, previewed for Washington press and politicians in November. He's the man who discovered the gas canisters in question while going through the Waco evidence vaults in Austin last March. It was primarily his dogged, obsessive-in another context one might say fanatical-probing of the government's role in the Waco catastrophe that forced Reno's stunning admission.On Sept. 1, in another surprising move, Reno sent federal marshals into FBI headquarters to impound Waco documents the agency had been withholding. A week later, she appointed John Danforth, the former Republican senator from Missouri, to conduct an independent investigation of the agency's actions in 1993.Now, six months later, embroiled in that investigation, reopened congressional probes and a multimillion-dollar wrongful death suit brought by surviving Branch Davidians, the government is being asked to admit more-much more. McNulty's new film asserts that in addition to Texas Rangers, FBI and ATF officers, the siege of Waco may have been carried out by a U.S. Army assault team. Though we'll be concerned mostly with how the Holocaust was talked about after 1945, the wartime years are the appropriate starting point. They were the point of departure for subsequent framing and representing, centering or marginalizing, and using for various purposes the story of the destruction of European Jewry. At the same time, America's wartime response to the Holocaust is what a great deal of later Holocaust discourse in the United States has been about. The most common version tells of the culpable, sometimes willed obliviousness of American gentiles to the murder of European Jews; the indifference to their brethren's fate by a timid and self-absorbed American Jewry; the "abandonment of the Jews" by the Roosevelt administration a refusal to seize opportunities for rescue, which made the United States a passive accomplice in the crime. By the 1970s and 1980s the Holocaust had become a shocking, massive, and distinctive thing: clearly marked off, qualitatively and quantitatively, from other Nazi atrocities and from previous Jewish persecutions, singular in its scope, its symbolism, and its world-historical significance. This way of looking at it is nowadays regarded as both pro per and natural, the "normal human response." But this was not the response of most Americans, even of American Jews, while the Holocaust was being carried out. Not only did the Holocaust have nowhere near the centrality in consciousness that it had from the 1970s on, but for the overwhelming majority of Americans and, once again, this included a great many Jews as well it barely existed as a singular event in its own right. The murderous actions of the Nazi regime, which killed between five and six million European Jews, were all too real. But "the Holocaust," as we speak of it today, was largely a retrospective construction, something that would not have been recognizable to most people at the time. To speak of "the Holocaust" as a distinct entity, which Americans responded to (or failed to respond to) in various ways, is to introduce an anachronism that stands in the way of understanding contemporary responses. The sheer number of victims of the Holocaust continues to inspire awe: between five and six million. But the Holocaust took place we know this, of course, but we don't often think of its implications in the midst of a global war that eventually killed between fifty and sixty million people. There are those for whom any such contextualization is a trivializing of the Holocaust, a tacit denial of the special circumstances surrounding the destruction of European Jewry. Certainly such contextualization can be used for these purposes, as when the French rightist Jean-Marie Le Pen dismisses the Holocaust as a mere "detail" of the history of the Second World War. But it was the overall course of the war that dominated the minds of Americans in the early forties. Unless we keep that in mind, we will never understand how the Holocaust came to be swallowed up in the larger carnage surrounding it. By itself, the fact that during the war, and for some time thereafter, there was no agreed-upon word for the murder of Europe's Jews is not all that significant. What is perhaps of some importance is that insofar as the word "holocaust" (lowercase) was employed during the war, as it occasionally was, it was almost always applied to the totality of the destruction wrought by the Axis, not to the special fate of the Jews. This usage is emblematic of wartime perceptions of what we now single out as "the Holocaust." There are many different dimensions to the wartime marginality of the Holocaust in the American mind: what one knew, and what one believed; how to frame what one knew or believed; devising an appropriate response. In principle these questions are separable; in practice they were inextricably entwined. In this chapter we'll look at the perceptions and responses of the American people as a whole; in Chapter 2, at American Jews; in Chapter 3, at the American government. What set him off was a speech delivered to a New York audience by Rabbi Marvin Heir of the Simon Weisenthal Center during which Heir alleged that his Holiness "preferred silence" about the Holocaust. Heir than went on to assert that the Pope "sat on the throne of Peter in stony silence, without even lifting a finger" during World War II when Jews were being slaughtered by the Nazis. The statements were bald faced lies, and provably so. But Heir wasn't finished slandering the late Pontiff. He also claimed that "the Vatican adamantly refuses to open their files on the period." because the evidence concealed in those files would establish the Pope's guilt. Says Lawler: "Each of these statements is demonstrably false. Pope Pius XII was not 'silent' during the years of the Holocaust. He spoke out forcefully against the Nazis. Both during and after the war, objective witnesses testified to the power of the Pope's statements." Phil Lawler went on to cite examples: In 1941 the NY Times published a pre-Christmas editorial which said the Pope had "put himself squarely against Hitlerism" and having "left no doubt that the Nazi aims are also irreconcilable with his own conception of Christian peace." According to the late Golda Meir, a former Israeli prime minister: "When fearful martyrdom came to our people in the decade of Nazi terror, the voice of the Pope was raised for the victims. The life of our times was enriched by a voice speaking out on the great moral truths above the tumult of daily conflict." Before he became Pope, Cardinal Pacelli served as papal nuncio in Germany and later as Vatican Secretary of State. Writes Lawler: "In each post he repeatedly clashed with the Nazi leadership. In 1937, he helped Pius XI draft the encyclical Mit Brennender Sorge, a condemnation of Nazi ideology which was read from pulpits throughout Germany. In his own introduction to the encyclical Cardinal Pacelli warned against a 'war of extermination' which he feared the Nazis would unleash. "During the worst years of the Holocaust," Lawler writes, "the Pope was directly or indirectly responsible for saving the lives of thousands\sands of Jews. Israeli diplomat Pinchas Lapide "estimated that the Pope was personally responsible for the lives of 700,000 Jews. "The chief Rabbi of Rome was so moved by the Pope's efforts that he became a devoted friend of Pius XII - and, eventually, a convert to the Catholic faith. "Writing in the Jewish Anti-Defamation League's Bulletin in 1958, Dr. Joseph Lichen said that the late Pontiff's 'opposition to Nazism and his efforts to help Jews in Europe were well known to the suffering world.' " Heir's absurd claim that the Vatican refuses to open its World War II and Holocaust archives gets short shrift from Lawler: "In fact, at the request of Pope Paul VI, a group of historians examined the material in those archives and produced an 11-volume report, containing abundant evidence of the Vatican's active involvement in efforts to save Jewish lives." Lawler then quotes Vatican spokesman Joaquin Navarro-Valls as saying that there is "nothing - I repeat, nothing" remaining in the archives that has not already been made available to scholars. Why, Lawler asks, "...would Rabbi Hier claim that the archives are sealed, when in fact they have been opened, and the evidence they contain has been made public? Could it be because the evidence exonerates the Pope - and confounds critics like Rabbi Hier himself. "Why would Rabbi Hier claim that Pius XII did nothing to oppose the Holocaust, when in fact the Pope was more vocal and more active in opposition to the Nazis than any other world leader. Why would he contradict the testimony of prominent Jewish leaders of the past, like Meir, Lapide, and Lichen? At best Hier is speaking about a subject of which he is woefully ignorant; at worst, he is slandering the memory of a great religious leader." Here's a test for you: name some criticism of anything the dominant Jewish Lobby is doing that could be criticized without you suspecting the person was an "anti-semite" -- and, my "uncharacteristic" syntax errors come from not double checking everything I write because I'm super busy and often writing these in the middle of the night after I get done a long day's work. But, as Fr. Fahey says, it has long been a tactic to try to associate criticism of anything Jewish with a lack of mental balance, as you have once again demonstrated. Yes, you do need Fr. ON JULY 9, 1938, Vladimir Kositzan, one of the most active Nazi propagandists
in the United States, wrote the following code letter to Ernst Goerner of
Milwaukee, another active Nazi agent: "The seeds are on way to you. More of
the Italian and English available yet. Polish will follow later, from my
Erfurt nursery. I want to get rid of my supplies before my probable
departure."
The "Erfurt nursery" is the press in Erfurt, Germany, where World Service, a
Nazi propaganda organ, is published in various languages for distribution
throughout the world. Nazi ships smuggle this material into the United States
where secret German agents distribute it to groups, organizations and
individual propagandists. The "seeds," of course., were copies of World
Service, printed in the languages Kositzan listed. It was part of Kositzan's
work to keep Goerner supplied with propaganda material and informed of likely
prospects who would help distribute the smuggled literature. Kosit zan was a
sort of wholesaler, while Goerner was one of the numerous agents handling the
retail end.
At the top of his letter to Goerner, Kositzan typed this name and address:
"Miss B. R. Burchett, 3411 Race St., Philadelphia, Pa." and scrawled in
pencil: "Needs material. Mention me. Very active."
July, 1938, was also the period when the Reverend Charles E. Coughlin, who had
already begun disseminating Nazi propaganda issued by the Ministry of
Propaganda in Berlin, launched his extreme anti-Semitic campaign. His efforts
to arouse racial and religious hatred in this country brought immediate
protests, not only from Jews but from high dignitaries of the Catholic church
and prominent Catholic laymen. Several radio stations announced they would not
sell time to the priest unless he submitted his script for advance reading to
see if he was "bearing false witness" as former Governor 'Alfred E. Smith had
publicly charged. When Coughlin would not agree to this "censorship," the
radio stations refused to let him go on the air.
Suddenly groups to defend Coughlin popped up. They called meetings to demand
that he be given his "constitutional rights of free speech." What these groups
were and the leaders' strange tie-ups will be dealt with in this chapter. At
the moment I am interested in Bessie Burchett, formerly head of the department
of foreign languages in the South Philadelphia High School for Girls, the lady
whose name Kositzan had sent to Goerner.
Within a few weeks after the Nazi agent in Milwaukee received Kositzan's
letter, Miss Burchett was on the public platform with Nazi and Silver Shirt
leaders, demanding that Coughlin be returned to the air. Most of her talks,
delivered in an atmosphere of Hitler salutes, were vicious anti-Semitic
diatribes. At no time did she mention how she became involved in Coughlin
defense efforts or that she had received material from Nazi agents.
At about this same period a young man named Edwin Westphall, hungry-looking, a
bit shabby, and down at the heels, 'Managed to eke out an existence by
peddling razor blades to the dinner and theater crowds on Times Square in New
York. Sometimes he made a couple of dollars, but it was hard sledding. Like
most Broadway peddlers, the seedy Mr. Westphall had something quick and alert
about him and he had that gift of gab so necessary if you're going to work the
Broadway population.
Times Square, where Westphall roamed with the coming of night, was being made
a concentration point by distributors of Social Justice. Frequently a Social
Justice peddler and the hawker of razor blades found themselves side by side.
Then one day Westphall disappeared, only to pop up again in the Bronx with new
shoes and new suit, cleanshaven, spick and span--and an authority on the
Constitution and the Bill of Rights. He was indignant about the radio stations
which would not permit Father Coughlin to go on the air. The same glib tongue
that sold razor blades now sold the need of "saving America"--and Coughlin-
through the "Crusaders for Americanism," which was headed by one George A. Van
Nosdall with offices at 126 East 123rd Street, New York City.
From now on we get into a group of closely cooperating men, most of them
native Americans, some of them phonies and others just hopeful of becoming
spies for foreign governments under cover of ultrapatriotic rackets. All of

Much has been written on the psychological aftermath concerning what happened in W.W.II in Europe as with other wars and conquered peoples. As an American, I experience this phenomena steming from what happened to the indigenous people and the black community (slavery) and it will still be many generations before all of these issues are finally resolved. Events of this magnitude take centuries to resolve within a culture - even longer if the "injured" people remain isolated from the larger community. I grew up outside of Washington, D.C. (where there are many large black communities) and I now live in the Southwest near several Indian reservations. The communities are different - the dynamics are the same. I have seen extreme behavior on both sides (white and non-white) in coping with these dynamics. These behaviors from the white population range from shouldering the entire "blame" and loosing themselves in platitudes and servitude to militant opposition and blatant hate campaigns. The behaviors I've observed from the non-white population range from submission with deep resentment and hatred to playing on the guilty feelings some have and trying to get "away" with everything they possibly can. These extreme behaviors will continue until a balance, or rather, as resolution is finally reached. The decision on the Anne Frank diary is likely an extreme move - a cultural adjustment. There have been many prior to this and there will be many more. It may not be to your liking - in which case write your letters of protest however, from a larger perspective it is a predictable and inevitable course of action by a society attempting to find equilibrium. I hope it is clear that when I respond to a posting, I do not necessarily endorse the parts I repost for reference (it's hard for others to keep the the thread without some reminders). The part I did include referred to someone's uncle having photographs of the aftermath of WW2 and whether the accompanying events ever happened. I was merely sharing MY experience of their actual existence, something the Europeans (and others) take VERY seriously. They are actually pretty chilling places to experience. If not taken seriously and not meant to be chilling, they'd have razed the bunch of them long ago. I hope there is no confusion about email protocol wherein the replies usually have some punctuation preceeding the original post(s) to indicate newer from older ... I have tried to stay out of this discussion about Anne Frank and the Holocaust. For me, the debate is over. I have yet to figure out why people are even questioning if the Holocaust happened or not. I have photographs that my uncle took when he went into some of the camps. These were never released to the public. He never tried to sell them. He just took some pictures and stuck them in a box with all the other family photos as one of many events that happened in his life. There is also a picture of a very young Mickey Rooney (sp?) sitting on a beach laughing with some friends. Again, this picture was also never released to the public. Am I to believe that my uncle fabricated these photos and them promptly stuck them away? If so, to what end? Was he playing a out some subplot in a larger conspiracy? My mother was a Lt. in the Army, a nurse stationed in southern France. This was not a mobile unit and there were days she would wake up and they would be behind enemy lines. While there, she heard things, saw things...Or did she make it all up? Perhaps she was given orders to do so as part of a bigger cover story. I lived in Israel for a year on two kibbutzim which was no small feat since I am half Lebanese and not Jewish. I heard from many people of their personal experiences - saw the tattooed numbers on their arms. Were they all part of a conspiracy? Were they all sharing in some Great Lie? I can assure you that it didn't feel like a lie when living on a boarder Kibbutz during a Red Alert. Years ago, I walked through the upper rooms where Anne Frank and her family stayed. As a teenager, I read her diary. There are times when court documents are not needed to find the truth. Sometimes, if we listen carefully, well can find the answers in the abundant clues that are left behind such as in photograph showing the eyes of a young girl who died in a concentration camp or in the ambient surroundings of a room off of a small street in Holland.
