That is a beautiful reproduction rig, but... if it's as old as it looks, I
guess it uses some kind of incandescent light source? If you want to make the
most of your camera's dynamic range, you probably want to use a very "cool"
light source (6500K, aka "daylight", or even add some gels to make it even more
"blue"). This way, you won't end up with such an underexposed blue channel in
order to avoid clipping the red channel; it will move them all a little closer
together in the histogram. This crudely approximates what film scanners do by
exposing the different channels for different lengths of time. It just helps
with not having to push the digital stretching of the blue channel quite as
hard. Take a shot without film loaded to get a white balance for the light
itself, and use that WB setting for all the shots, then use the negadoctor
module to further adjust for the remaining orange mask.

In addition to the links already provided for information about negadoctor
module, also pay attention to the tooltips when hovering over the slider labels
- there's a lot of information there.

And, just for my take on processing one of the old negatives, attached is an
XMP for the first one, which also uses the color balance module to further
correct some of the extreme color cast into something a little more neutral.
Note the use of the parametric blend to constrain the processing to the shadow
areas. You could do even better with more time spent on the masking, but it's a
quick example. :-)

[darktable-user] Changes to Filmic

2020-08-12 Thread Terry Pinfold
Thanks to Aurélien Pierre for his continued great work with Filmic. I have
not yet fully explored the potential of the latest version but am confident
that it will be an improvement on an already powerful module. However, the
one change that has me confused is the apparent loss of control for the
saturation of the pixels at the extreme luminosities. I sometimes liked to
tweak these settings to suit the specific image.

I look forward to new instructions on the filmic module to understand the
modified options and tabs. Does anyone have any comments to share about the
latest version of the module?

[darktable-user] image selection lighttable 3.2.1

2020-08-12 Thread I. Ivanov

Hi All,

I noticed a change how image selection works in lighttable 3.2.1
compared to 3.0.2

When viewing in full screen (press and hold "w") and advance - I was
able to click enter and mark the image - then when I release "w" the
image on what I hit enter remained selected so I can easily go to it.

In 3.2 the image on what i press enter is highlighted but as soon as I
move the mouse to go to it the selection disappears.

Does anybody know if this is intentional?

Thank you,

B

I was affected by this as well. Crossposting what I wrote on Github:
Switching to a different theme fixed the issue. I had made some HiDPI
theming tweaks in the previous version (which may be superflous now). I
removed my `themes` folder (in `~/.config/darktable`), and now the default
darktable theme does not exhibit the issue anymore either.

[darktable-user] Preview problems since update to 3.2.1

2020-08-12 Thread Andreas Herold
Hi,

since update to 3.2.1 from 3.0.2 I’m experiencing following problems:

My existing preview cache is not used. After some experimenting (deleted a
cache file and let recreate it) I found, that now cache files of size „5“ are
required for my display settings (3 images in row on a MacBook Pro Retina 13’’,
2560 x 1600). For me that’s a big problem. I have about 7 images on two
external disks of 5TB each. With this amount of images the preview cache
becomes much too large for my notebook, if cache files of size „5“ are
required. If I look at sizes of cached images, size „3“ would be fully
sufficient for 3 images in row. BTW darktable 3.0.2 used cache file size „4“
for this setup, which was ok too.

Next problem is, that preview images are looking really awful. The preview
images look like scaled without any interpolation, just like by leaving rows
and columns completely out.

I hope, that these are issues, which can be fixed by some kind of
configuration.

Best regards
Andreas Herold

Why don't you flip it in horizontal direction? If scanned from emulsion
side it should be flipped.

My take only using the eyedropper tool from the negadoctor module in the
dark green area of the larger tree and a slight correction on the
dynamic range slider (0.61 db). Colors are a bit oversaturated. You can
tweek this in the correction tab of that module.

Honestly speaking I don't remember. It took like 10 minutes to make it,
7 of them I was drinking tea and retouching scratches. Don't take it as

image, so I don't like trying to recover something that doesn't exist

P.S. Wash old films in distilled water and use wet scanning if you can.
Take higher resolution if possible (12-18 Mpx for 35mm), it will help
avoiding ugly bluish artifacts around high contrast details on color
negatives. Don't enable base curve module.

Re: [darktable-user] Windows darktable V 3.2.1 - does not load/import lightable files or folder

2020-08-12 Thread Harald
Ross,

do you see a Terminal window with debugging information in parallel to
the darktable window? If this is not true, run darktable from within a
git bash window to be able to collect all messages.

Download and install git for windows first (https://gitforwindows.org/).

"-d" is the option to show the messages for each subsystem, "-d all" for
everything (supported). -d is never part of a path name.

Take care about "/" or "\" in your path as well. Within git bash
terminal window it is "/" and NOT "\".
