Re: [darktable-user] Help needed with Canon CR2 pictures

2021-04-01 Thread Martin Straeten
Unfortunatly exiftools doesn’t give helpful hints: there’s also
Average Black Level : 2048 2048 2048 2048
But this results in massive clipping of the dark areas, losing a whole bunch of
details.
I also checked the raw.pixls.us image
(https://raw.pixls.us/getfile.php/130/nice/Canon%20-%20EOS%207D%20-%20sRAW1%20(mRAW)%20(3:2).CR2)
 - unfortunately far away from being norm lit
Setting black points 0-3 to about 118 -125 seems to give a most neutral result
(based on the black keyboard )
And it’s also fine for the OPs image, so maybe its a good initial value for
tweaking ...

Just checked rawspeed and the values are 0 for black point. You can use
exiftool and look at the
Average Black Level to get a good point. For the full size raw it's 2048.

Re: [darktable-user] Help needed with Canon CR2 pictures

2021-04-01 Thread Martin Straeten
That’s no bug, thats a feature. After importing lighttable shows the embedded
jpg. in darkroom you can see the raw processed with darktable modules instead
of the camera internal processing.
If it’s magenta there might be an issue with the default white balance
settings. I don’t think thats a general issue with darktable since my old 7D
pics doesn’t show a magenta tint in shadows if processed just with the
mandatory modules. (scene referred workflow as well as display referred
workflow)
But 7d is known for being sensitive to highlight clipping, so if you get
magenta in highlights you might activate highlight reconstruction ,reconstruct
in lch‘ mode. But better avoid clipping highlights.
Maybe you need to provide a xmp file of an affected image so it’s possible to
check the settings.

2020-04-07 Thread Terry Pinfold
Hi Peter,
The method suggested by Jason works really well and is similar to the
method I have used in Lightroom. But be careful as trashing an image
removes it from your hard drive permanently (unless you recover from your
recycle bin). The other option is to use remove option which only removes
it from the Darktable collection but leaves the original on the hard drive.
BTW I have used Lightroom for many years. It is quick and easy to use which
is its real strength but the creative control in Darktable is so much
greater. Darktable has a steep learning curve but well worth investing time
in.

Cheers
  Terry

Dear Peter,

My method is basically to reject the picture (you can use the reject key
"r" or just keep it at 1 star) and then select all rejected image at the
top of the window. Then you can use the "Trash" button on the right in
"Selected Images" to send the images to the trash.

How are you deleting the images? Note that there is a difference
between removing from darktable and deleting/trashing the file (both
available in the "Selected images" module,

Maybe your database is corrupted? If you stop the program, open up a
terminal and type:
mv ~/.config/darktable ~/.config/darktable.old

then type:
/Applications/darktable.app/Contents/MacOS/darktable

maybe it works again? If not, let us know what error message you see in the
terminal.

Hi Peter

you can start it from terminal with debugging on by typing this:

/Applications/darktable.app/Contents/MacOS/darktable -d all

for more options (limit debugging to certain things) check the --help

It'll show you on terminal stdout what problem it runs into, with that info
you can either fix it yourself or ask the list again for further input

Re: [darktable-user] Help updating lensfun?

2019-08-15 Thread Richard Trinkner
Thanks very much for the pointer.

As it turns out, I had two versions of lensfun on my Ubuntu system: the
distro version and a newer version that I compiled from source.

The lensfun-update-data program reported a socket error for me. Editing
the file lensfun-update-file to remove a line that referenced "sourceforge"
solved the problem.

More details at https://discuss.pixls.us/t/darktable-lensfun2/12457.

Thanks,

Richard

To get newly added lens corrections it suffices to update just the
lensfun database. It can be done by running `lensfun-update-data`
utility (part of liblensfun-bin package). This will bring in corrections
for your 200-500mm Nikkor.

As for the latest lensfun compiled from source, you may find that
darktable is complaining about lensfun database version (if you start
darktable from command line, for example).

This works for me on 2.0 and requires that you don't use groups for
organisation:
Group files (the 'G' on the top right of the light table view, which
collapses duplicates into one group)
Control + A (selects all, it only selects the first image in the group)
Ungroup (press the 'G' again to ungroup)
Control + I (invert selection)
all your duplicates should now be selected and you can now delete them.

hope this helps

Now its a bit late but think about moving to btrfs filesystem or zfs which is
btrfs big brother.
Snapshots do not replace backup but are extremly cheap.
Create a script that takes a snapshot before it starts DT or simply create a
snapshot every 5 mins and delete after 1 hour or a day.

I did a backup of the database yesterday at 1pm (actually every day,
a rolling backup of the db for 10 days).

So what about:
