What I was not able to figure out is what aptitude performs in gui mode when I
hit U to schedule all upgradeable packages for an upgrade. I guess upgrade
(which is equivalent to safe-upgrade) is used. Does s.o.

Not enough power can cause all sorts of problems. If you think your
powersupply is underspecced for your hardware it is worth upgrading it. I
would be surprised if anything 400W is causing problems though (unless
they only happen when using the graphics card intensively).
