In both case /dev/hdc seems to be ignored because it is considered as a
CDROM drive. This is the case because you have a symlink /dev/cdrom -
/dev/hdc. Removing it should fix your problem.

Are you still seeing with this with more recent versions of
gaim/libc6-i686? I'm using gaim 1:1.1.2-3 and lib6-i686 2.3.2.ds1-20,
and I can't reproduce this bug.
