This bug has been fixed upstream since 0.96.3. Changelog says:
Fixed buggy utf8_is_valid_data() (svn rev12217).
Fix is now shipped in Debian with 0.96.3-1, already uploaded to
unstable. Thus, I'm now closing the report.
