The problem was in the fact that sda was prevoiusly part of a software (mdadm)
array, and the installer recognized it somehow, locking its access.
I solved the issue with mdadm --stop /dev/md0; mdadm --zero-superblock /dev/sda

The same problem occured on my installation of Debian 5 Lenny; this
bug blocks systems where unattended-upgrades is used.

i have found the problem: i have installed an other library named
libaudit in /usr/local/lib
deleting those files, gdm restarted to work
you can set closed status to this bug
