I just had this problem, with the same okay at login but then fubared ever
after pattern. I solved it, after far too long, by running across a

The bug is still present as the patch only addressed one part of the
gcc-4.3 incompatibilities. The gcc-4.3 fixes are a bit more invasive
then should be handled in an NMU, IMO, and Simon has them fixed in the
next upstream release, iirc.

from the headers, while keeping the supporting ABI. I'm not sure what

Yes, in fact it turns out to be that simple. X regards the num-lock
behavior as implying the 'function key' behavior, even for keys that
don't have anything to do with the numeric keypad overlay.
So the workaround is, turn the numlock off.

No. The records file is only open when necessary. The daemon doesn't
write directly to that file either. It writes to a temporary file and
