Bug#329901: xterm

2007-02-07 Thread Jim Paris
I've run into this bug for a very long time, usually when starting
something like the Linux make menuconfig. If this isn't a problem
with xterm, could it be reassigned to the proper package (libxinerama?
xfs?) so it can be properly addressed?

 Between 1968 and 1971, the United Kingdom used the GMT+1 time all year.
 See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/British_Summer_Time for the details.

 They must have been mad :) So should tm_isdst == 1 for that period
 instead of 0? (I'll take no reply as a no, and no offence taken)

Strictly speaking it is not a summer time, the time being the same all
the year. People called that summer time because the offset corresponds
 to the one of previous summer time periods. But this is wrong!

So I think the implementation chosen is tzdata is correct.

Bug#410026: linux-image-2.6.18-3-k7: Oops related to firefox-bin (Iceweasel): BUG: unable to handle kernel paging request at virtual address

2007-02-07 Thread Teemu Likonen
Package: linux-image-2.6.18-3-k7
Version: 2.6.18-7
Severity: important

I've got kernel Oops two times and it maybe related to process
firefox-bin. It was just casual web surfing without anything special
going on otherwise on the system. The Iceweasel was dead and did not
respond. I was able to close the window but the firefox-bin process
remained: couldn't kill it even with root's kill -9.

Two syslog excerpts attached.

Bug#406292: pysvn_load_dirs: a freely redistributable implementation of svn_load_dirs

 not uncoincidentally the ones I never used in the original. I plan to
 increase compatability over time.

   http://free.linux.hp.com/~dannf/pysvn_load_dirs

 pysvn_load_dirs uses the pysvn module mostly because that's the
 one I'm most familiar with. Porting to the libsvn interface, at a
 glance, looks pretty straightforward.

[snip]

Can I make a suggestion? svn_load_dirs was never a very descriptive
name anyway, for a tool that essentially does what most people think
of as vendor branches (although some object to the latter term on
the grounds that often the source is not a vendor but another open
source project).

In any case, both in order to avoid identity confusion and to have a
better name, maybe you could name it something wholly new, and just
say in its documentation that it's intended as a drop-in replacement
for svn_load_dirs?

Possibilities: sourcedrop, svn_vbranch, sidefork... I dunno, I'm
just making stuff up, probably you can come up with something better.

I've an old idea that functionality of 'svn_load_dirs.pl' should just
extended behavior of 'svn import' command. So I propose name like
'svn_import'.

 You don't need to file a new bug report; I suppose someone else will
 glance at this release critical bug and reassign it appropriately if he
 knows better.

 It might not be a bug in the kernel, it might be in udev, or it might
 be that a reconfiguration is needed on your side between different
 kernels (which we could document in the release note), or perhaps a
 driver wasn't loaded on your host; I simply don't know.

  Correct me if I'm wrong : this bug affects also D-I and Etch is
 can't be installed in any machine using CCISS controler?

 That's correct.

But then it would be impossible to tell whether one means svn import
or svn_import, in speech.

Some synonyms for import:

   give entrance to, give admittance to, give the entree; introduce,
   intromit; usher, admit, receive, import, bring in, open the door
   to, throw in, ingest, absorb, imbibe, inhale, breathe in; let in,
   take in, suck in, draw in; readmit, resorb, reabsorb; snuff up,
   swallow, ingurgitate; engulf, engorge; gulp; eat, drink

Well, svn_intromit is probably a bit awkward, but svn_ingest might
work. Or svn_intake -- Hmm, I actually kind of like that one.

Bug#410027: madwifi-source: Madwifi (or kernel) fails to respect wifi light on nc6000

2007-02-07 Thread Eric Lavarde
Package: madwifi-source
Version: 1:0.9.2+r1842.20061207-2
Severity: minor

Hello,

with newer versions of the kernel and madwifi driver, the LED on my HP
nc6000 is on even if the wifi has been shutoff (with the corresponding
button on the laptop); this behavior didn't happen earlier and the LED
was off when the wifi was off, and on with the wifi on.
To be clear the button on the laptop doesn't deactivate the WLAN device
but does only deactivate the antenna (though it deactivates as well the
complete bluetooth device).

The issue appeared somewhere between madwifi-modules-2.6.16-2-686
0.svnr1644.0.9.0-2+2.6.16-17 and madwifi-modules-2.6.18-3-686
0.9.2+r1842.20061207-2+2.6.18-7, so that I don't know if it's due to the
kernel or the madwifi driver. But I need to start somewhere, don't I?

The bug is quite annoying because I have no easy way beside dmesg
(checking for the bluetooth device) to know if the wifi is on or off.
I would be already grateful for a way to properly find the culprit.

Thanks, Eric

Unsurprisingly, I'm not able to reproduce this problem. It's quite possible
that this is due to a hardware bug or a kernel/X bug affecting your
hardware, rather than a problem in epiphany-browser itself; general
userspace apps shouldn't be able to cause hard system lock-ups.

 I doubt this is due to a particular version of epiphany-browser. This
 looks like a bug in either a driver or a problem with your hardware, as
 user programs should not crash the whole system.

 I suggest you check whether your keyboard still work after the freeze
 (caps lock), whether you can still SSH into the box, and collect some
 debugging data: Xorg log, kernel log, system log etc.

 Are you using a proprietary ATI or NVidia or Wifi driver?

  libgl1-mesa-dri do you have? Can you try installing libgl1-mesa-swx11 to

 That makes the problem go away, it is definitely GL-implementation related.
 Sorry, I would have tried this myself, but I really didn't know how to
 configure the system for software opengl.

 Given that it is known that 965-dri is not baked in etch, should this
 just be closed? or filed against libgl1-mesa-dri (encountered with
 6.5.1-0.5 as I believe the initial report should say.)

Can you try libgl1-mesa-dri 6.5.2 from experimental?

Bug#388693: (pas de sujet)

Hi,

I think you shouldn't remove override in debian/fuse-utils.postrm:

case $1 in
 purge|remove)
 dpkg-statoverride --remove /usr/bin/fusermount || true
 ;;

This will remove any override set by the system administrator!
Morever removing the package override is already done through preinst
script.

Best regards, Adam.

Bug#410032: Please package 2.6.3 (2.6.2 is a bad release).

2007-02-07 Thread Le_Vert
Package: fuse
Severity: normal

Hi,

Could you please upograde your package to 2.6.3 ?
Neither fuse upstream nor ntfs-3g think 2.6.2 is a good release.

See this release note from 2.6.3 :
The quality of the 2.6.2 release turned out to be rather
poor, with one serious and a couple of less serious
regressions. This release will hopefully be better.

Please fix #409644 and #388693 (re-opened) too.

Thanks in advance!

PS: There is a couple of bugs who could probably be closed easily, I'll help
asap I have a few time.

hi,

at first it lokked like a bug, but then after digging into the docs I'm
rating it a wishlist item.

Seems that grep fails on simple basic regex:

% echo -e '\t\t:ris'|egrep '^\t'

fails, yet it should clearly match. Eg.:

% echo -e '\t\t:ris'|agrep '^\t'
:ris

with agrep from tre-regex.
But even agrep seems broken here:

% echo -e '\t\t:ris'|agrep '^[ \t]'

fails. [ \t] would be [:blank:] and with that both *grep work.

Also fail:

% echo -e '\t:ris'|egrep '^\t'
and
% echo -e '\t:ris'|egrep '^[ \t]'

Funny is, that sed (4.1.5) works:

% echo -e '\t:ris'|sed 's/^[ \t]\(.*\)/\1/'
:ris

and pcregrep (4.3, PCRE 6.7) is fine on all of above:

% echo -e '\t\t:ris'|pcregrep '^\t'
:ris
% echo -e '\t\t:ris'|pcregrep '^[ \t]'
:ris
% echo -e '\t:ris'|pcregrep '^[ \t]'
:ris

manpage doesn't mention escapes like \t, POSIX states that
The interpretation of an ordinary character preceded by a backslash (\)
is undefined.
though I'd expect grep and sed agree on RE, and rather have support in grep
for the usual escapes (other than the RE specials, that is) like sed and
pcregrep.

thanks

No such device or address means the device node exists but that the device
doesn't exist at the kernel level; the bug log shows that the device being

So svn-intake is my best :)

And we could have svn import --intake (or svn import --replace) in feature.

Bug#410038: dhcdbd: Sends timeout even if predefined lease is successful

2007-02-07 Thread Stefan Söffing
-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-
Hash: SHA1

Package: dhcdbd
Version: 2.0-2

Hi,

when DHCP times out (e.g. because it doesn't get a response from a
server) it tries to use the predefined static leases. DHCDBD sends a
timeout, even if a predefined lease can be used.

In my case this causes NetworkManager not to recognize the established
connection.

DHCDBD should distinguish whether a connection was established via a
predefined lease or not in case of timed out DHCP.

  the final space), but executable contents (such a .desktop file), can
  trick users into running arbitrary command.

  This is a security problem because you can trick users into saving a
  file named e.g. apple.jpg and opening it because they might think
  opening .jpg files is safe, but gnome-vfs/shared-mime-info will report
  the MIME type as being .desktop file and nautilus will run the
  specified command instead of opening the .jpg viewer.

  The proposed solution for this bug is to check whether the file uses
  the correct extension for its MIME type as is done in Xfce's VFS lib
  (see attached .c snippet).

  I'm cloning this bug and reassigning against nautilus because the
  current way in which .desktop files are painted in nautilus is a
  security issue in itself: people can host dangerous files on smb://
  shares and trick users into opening them because nautilus will display
  the .desktop file using its embedded Name and Icon; so you can
  display the .desktop file as if it were a picture or sound file with
  the name of a picture or sound file, and people will be tricked into
  opening it with no useful way to distinguish.

  The proposed solution for this bug is to filter for which URLs nautilus
  is allowed to nicely display .desktop files. http:// and smb:// could
  be disabled by default and file:// and computer:// could be enabled,
  but some special URLs need to be explicitely authorized as nautilus
  relies on .desktop files support in e.g. smb://$workgroup/ to list
  computer names.

Bye,

Bug#330105: libc6-dev: __FD_SETSIZE equals to 1024 is too small

Just libc and everything that uses select - basically you have to
rebuild the whole archive.

AFAIK sys_select() in the kernel can handle arbitrary large number of
file descriptiors, so one option is not to use glibc's select() wrapper
but do your own. But a much better approach (both maintainability and
performance wise) is to use epoll().

However, we cannot get this software at any shops because it is to old.
In addition, we have no user about this.

Therefore, I think it is better removing this package from archive.

Bug#410032: Please package 2.6.3 (2.6.2 is a bad release).

2007-02-07 Thread Adam Cécile (Le_Vert)

Hi,

I made a 2.6.3 package, the deb-src are hosted at debian mentors:
http://mentors.debian.net/debian/pool/main/f/fuse/

Here is the changelog:
   * New upstream release.
   * Create a versioned shlibs file (Closes: #409644).
   * Fix package version in fuse-utils.postinst and do not remove
override in postrm (Closes: #388693).

   * Add watch file.

Thanks in advance.

Adam Cécile (Le_Vert) a écrit :

Package: fuse

Bug#410039: No /usr/lib/xen folder so it's confusing other packages

2007-02-07 Thread Thomas GOIRAND
Package: linux-image-2.6-xen-686
Severity: wishlist

Hello,

Our package, dtc-xen, uses /usr/lib/python/xen installed by the
normal xen source package using make install. With this package,
there is no such folder, but instead something with version
number like this: /usr/lib/xen-3.0.3-1/lib/python. So we cannot
include the xen python bindings for xen.xm that we use to start
and stop a VM. Of course, there is no error when using the
source version of xen from xensource.com. I highly think
that not having this /usr/lib/python/xen folder under the
Debian package is really problematic.

As there would be a problem to just insert a symlink in the
package itself (diversion problems when upgrading or when you
want to have both versions installed at the same time), my
suggestion is that the postinst of the package creates a
symlink in /usr/lib/python/xen so that it always works. Note
that our package (dtc-xen) will not care if it's not the
corresponding kernel that is started, I believe, but this
would for sure solve our issues.

I'd appreciate A LOT if this was fixed. Note that I have filed
a bug only for this i686 version, but of course, the same
problem occurs when running on amd64 and other images.

Best regards and thanks for this work,

Thomas Goirand

Bug#404483: is built but does not work

2007-02-07 Thread Max Alekseyev

I've tried to use the proposed patch with the released Linux kernel 2.6.20 from
kernel.org
While it does help to build the madwifi modules, they do not work properly.
Namely, I get the following error when the modules start:

wifi%%d: unable to attach hardware: '' (HAL status 3222512051)

and no wifi device is created.
I do not know if this error is related to the patch. If not, should I file a
new bugreport?

P.S. The wifi device works perfectly with madfiwi driver under kernel 2.6.19
(on the same system with the same settings).

 P.S. An apt-get hack to allow you to pull in dependent cross files would

apt-cross is intended to be an apt-like frontend for dpkg-cross and as
such, does include limited dependency tracking. Please take a look at
apt-cross for this functionality. If this is sufficient, please close
this bug. Otherwise, please re-assign (or let me know so that I can

This should be done automatically. After all thats what a dependecy is
for. Maybe I'm overlooking something but I don't see a problem to have

Depends: amarok-engines (=amarok-version) | amarok-engine (=amarok-version)

Which would solve this problem, without creating a circular dependecy.
The same with a conflict, I think ( a conflict with amarok-engine
amarok-version)

Bug#410042: lintian: please warn on effectively-empty maintscripts

2007-02-07 Thread Justin Pryzby
Package: lintian
Severity: wishlist

Please warn on maintainer scripts which contain only

  shebang line  #!
  empty line^$
  shell attribute manipulation  set
  exit builtin  exit

On a machine without much cruft:

$ for f in /var/lib/dpkg/info/*.{pre,post}{inst,rm}; do grep -qvwe '^#!' -e
'^$' -e '^set' -e '^exit 0' $f || echo $f; done;
/var/lib/dpkg/info/libapm1.preinst
/var/lib/dpkg/info/libgstreamer0.10-0.preinst
/var/lib/dpkg/info/libapm1.prerm
/var/lib/dpkg/info/libpam0g.prerm
/var/lib/dpkg/info/libpam-modules.prerm
/var/lib/dpkg/info/tct.prerm
/var/lib/dpkg/info/timeout.prerm
/var/lib/dpkg/info/wireshark-common.prerm
/var/lib/dpkg/info/libpam-modules.postinst
/var/lib/dpkg/info/tct.postinst
/var/lib/dpkg/info/timeout.postinst

Rationale:
An effectively-empty postrm will cause the package to be in config
files rather than not installed. It isn't assertive; doesn't check
that the arguments are one of the documented interfaces. As such, it's
likely to be an error: an effectively empty script used for rollbacks
will succeed, even though nothing has actually been rolled back. If old
{pre,post}rm upgrade fail, and that script exists in the new package,
but is effectively-empty, failed-upgrade will always succeed. dpkg
would know that it should fail if the new file doesn't exist. In the
unusual case that upgrade really had some effect, and failed-upgrade
shouldn't, then it makes sense to include a maintscript with the usual
case foo (which catches undocumented values of $1).

 I do not know if this error is related to the patch. If not, should I file

 P.S. The wifi device works perfectly with madfiwi driver under kernel
 2.6.19 (on the same system with the same settings).

madwifi upstream (SVN) is compatible with 2.6.20. I am working with some
others to get a new upstream release out, then we can get it into debian.

Get a recent testing snapshot from here in the meantime:

Bug#410045: beagle: please enable webservices

2007-02-07 Thread Adrian von Bidder
Package: beagle
Severity: wishlist
Version: 0.2.12-1+b1

Hi,

#322733 indicates that webservices are now enabled, but apparently they got
disabled again at some time in the past. Since we're running a network
with ca. 80 workstations here, I'd really like users to be able to search
the company-wide shared documents without each of them hitting the NFS
server. Running a beagle instance somewhere on this tree and having the
others access that through the webinterface seems the sane way to me.

Bug#410043: icedove: Give an opportunity to make filename compatible with receiver MUA

2007-02-07 Thread Jean-Michel
Package: icedove
Version: 1.5.0.9.dfsg1-1
Severity: wishlist

When thunderbird send an attachment, with the 'Joindre' menu, the mail
source looks like:

Content-Type: application/octet-stream;
 name*0*=ISO-8859-1''%63%61%6C%65%6E%64%72%69%65%72%20%6A%61%6E%76%69%65%72;
 name*1*=%20%E0%20%41%76%72%69%6C%20%32%30%30%37%2E%64%6F%63
Content-Transfer-Encoding: base64
Content-Disposition: attachment;
 filename*0*=ISO-8859-1''%63%61%6C%65%6E%64%72%69%65%72%20%6A%61%6E%76%69;
 filename*1*=%65%72%20%E0%20%41%76%72%69%6C%20%32%30%30%37%2E%64%6F%63

In such a case, when the receiver is another Thunderburd, everything
works fine.
However, with some alternative mail readers (webmail and microsoft
product), the filename is renamed with something such as ABCDEF52.dat,
where dat is not the bad suffix.
This is a big issue for a regular windows user, which then tell to the
sender: «You sent me a dat file I cannot read», and then, Thunderbird
users seems to have a big issue.

The problem doesnot occur if the filename has a plain ASCII 8.3 name
without space.

So, to solve this issue, according to me, based on:
* the filename characeters used,
* identity of the To:
* X-mailer: or X-MimeOLE: stored from previous received mail

Ask the user if he wants to send mail as is, or rename the file from within
thunderbird.

In practice, when sending message thunderberd should say:
«You want to send «fichier français.doc» to machin[EMAIL PROTECTED].
However, according to receved mails from him, machin[EMAIL PROTECTED]
uses «Produced By Microsoft MimeOLE
V6.00.3790.2826» which might be know to not be compatible with such
filenames.
So it might be a good idea to rename the file, in order to help him read
the file.
Do you want to send it as fichier.doc?
Do you want to send it with another name?».

The issue was detected sending a mail from thunderbird 1.5 for windows, to a non
thunderbird user.

Bug#410046: debian-installer: Unresponsive ftp server freezes install

2007-02-07 Thread Daniel Haude
Package: debian-installer
Severity: normal

(I've re-sent this bug report through my normal email program because I
have the suspicion that reportbug somehow can't SMTP through my
employer's firewall).

During the installation of etch I accidentally selected a Debian ftp
mirror which was apparently buggy (ftp2.de.debian.org). For some reason
or another the progress bar during the initial download (I think just
the Packages.gz file) got stuck and didn't move for more than an hour.
After that I had to forcibly kill the installer and do everything up to
that point over again, selecting a different ftp mirror. Smooth sailing
after that.

I think it would be good if the installer, during potentially lenghty
operations and especially those that can fail due to reasons outside the
installer, provided three things:

1) more verbous information of what is going on and why it could
potentially last very long.

2) An automatic timeout after whose expiration the user can try to
repeat the operation or go back to the previous step. In my case, this
timeout could have included the suggestion to try a different mirror.

3) A cancel function that can be activated at any time by the user,
and which will gracefully bring the installer back to the previous step.

Thanks a lot, and keep up the great work!

According to

With extended ACLs, the group class permissions map to the mask entry

This is the case with other programs, such as the touch and ls, but
not with samba.

Samba is configured with create mode = 0664.
This behavior does not seem to depend on nt acl support setting.

Bug#409925: kmail: Composer window starts minimised

2007-02-07 Thread Marcus Better
Some further observations: The same thing just happened when I clicked on a
mailto: link in Konqueror. The composer window started minimised. But when I
closed the composer and clicked the mailto: link again, it opened a window,
although it was behind the Konqueror window and not in focus.

It would be more natural to give the window focus, since a user clicking on a
mailto: link probably wants to write a mail right away.

I think it's common practice to put the tools in a separate package, and
suggest the name thinkfinger-tools instead of tf-tool, since it's easier for
the user to identify what the package is for, and since other tools may be
added in the future.

 [2] I still have a problem, because e.g. PAM module for the SGS
 Thomson Microelectronics fingerprint reader is longer than the
 expected 60 characters for the short description. Suggestions
 welcome!

Perhaps you can drop the word Microelectronics from the short description.

Thanks for working on this, it will be really nice to have it in Debian.

Bug#403425: xemacs21: autocorrect with mouse-2 in flyspell broken

Just comment that I can reproduce this bug with a Debian-vanilla

This means that the problem is in xemacs21 itself, not in flyspell.el
provided by dictionaries-common. I have tested the same as above with
xemacs 21.4.17, both with and without the -vanilla option and everything
seems to work fine.

Surprisingly, I have seen nothing extra about this neither in xemacs CVS,

http://cvs.xemacs.org/viewcvs.cgi/XEmacs/packages/xemacs-packages/text-modes/flyspell.el

nor googling.

Unless some of the Debian xemacs21 changes can be blamed, this seems to
point to upstream. Testing this in other non-Debian based distros might help
as well to decide if is good to send a copy of this bug report upstream, with
everything done with the -vanilla option.

hi,

I got the same issue with Version postfix 2.3.6-1 on an amd64 machine.

There is postfix and postfix-mysql installed. A start does not return an
error.. :

BUT:

# /etc/init.d/postfix stop
Stopping Postfix Mail Transport Agent: postfixpostfix/postfix-script:

After sending the stop-command, postfix is still running (and working ;))

Thanks for any comments,

Bug#151820: Ubuntu patch

2007-02-07 Thread Martin Pitt
Hi!

I just implemented this long-standing feature request in Ubuntu:

 dhcp3 (3.0.4-12ubuntu2) feisty; urgency=low
 .
   * Add debian/patches/dynamic-hostname.dpatch:
  - Add support for a new string type 'h' which behaves like 't' except
that 'hostname' is changed to the current hostname.
  - Change 'host-name' DHCP option type from 't' to 'h'.
  - Based on a patch from Nathan O'Sullivan, thank you!
   * debian/dhclient.conf: Enable send-hostname by default (value 'hostname',
 which our shiny new patch from above will translate to the actual
 hostname). Closes: LP#10239 and two handful of duplicates.

You can find the debdiff at

  http://people.ubuntu.com/patches/dhcp3.client-send-hostname.patch

Thanks,

Martin

Thinking about this, there's actually another thing bothering me - you can't
use firmware-qlogic without the 'MODULES=most' option, IOW, there seems to
be no way to build just a minimal initrd just with the qla2xxx and the
firmware file.

Bug#410050: flashybrid: package displays useless warning on updates

2007-02-07 Thread Diego Iastrubni
Package: flashybrid
Version: 0.13
Severity: important
Justification: shows warning messages about installations on upgrades

When you install the package it will warn you that it modifies the way the
system behaves. This is crucial since this package may brake some assumptions
about the way your system behaves.
However, those messages are needed only on the first install, and not in every
update.

Imagine a company developing an embbeded device using flashybrid, and then they
issue some update. The confused user will get the warning about
somthing out of his control (he has not installed the package, and he does not
wish to remove it).

The solution is to show the message only if the service is not up and running
(by looking into /etc/default/flashybrid).

Bug#410057: cron should send email with UTF-8 charset as it's default in Etch

2007-02-07 Thread Teemu Likonen
Package: cron
Version: 3.0pl1-100
Severity: important

UTF-8 charset is default in Etch and hence I think cron should send
email messages with this charset. I tried to source and export my
system's locale variables (LANG and LC_*) in /etc/init.d/cron but it did
not effect to emails sent by the cron. But adding

CONTENT_TYPE=text/plain; charset=utf-8

to every crontab file works. It would be nicer to use system's locale
variables, though. More information is in the crontab(5) manual.

Even if system administrator chooses to use non-UTF-8 locale, it doesn't
necessarily hurt to send messages with UTF-8 charset since mail user
agents handle the conversion. It only hurts when administrator creates
non-UTF-8 encoded scritps which write something to stdout in a cron job.

The configuration supplied by default in this package does not work on default

Bug#410053: flashybrid: default configuration is part of the package

2007-02-07 Thread Diego Iastrubni
Package: flashybrid
Severity: important

When you install this package, the service is off by default. To enable it,
you need to modify /etc/default/flashybrid . When a new package comes,
dpkg will ask users what to do with the modified configuration file. We all
know that choosing the packager version is almost always the way to go, so
I press y and rendered my system unusable (by remove the protections needed
on those environments).

The solution is to install a default configuration file on the package
post-install script. This means the configuration file is not part of the
package and users will not be asked confusing questions.

Bug#410052: Java programs fail in name resolution.

2007-02-07 Thread Ramon Garcia Fernandez
Package: libc6-ie86
Version: libc6-i386
Severity: important

When using a java 32 bit virtual machine, the java programs fail to resolve
names.

Here is a simple java test program

--
import java.io.IOException;
import java.net.InetSocketAddress;
import java.net.Socket;
import java.net.SocketAddress;
import java.net.UnknownHostException;

public class TestConnect {

/**
 * @param args
 */
public static void main(String[] args) {
try {
Socket s = new Socket();
SocketAddress addr = new
InetSocketAddress(slashdot.org, 80);
s.connect(addr);
} catch (UnknownHostException e) {
e.printStackTrace();
} catch (IOException e) {
e.printStackTrace();
}
}
}
---

Running the program with a 32 bit java virtual machine fails with:

java.net.UnknownHostException: slashdot.org
at java.net.PlainSocketImpl.connect(PlainSocketImpl.java:177)
at java.net.SocksSocketImpl.connect(SocksSocketImpl.java:366)
at java.net.Socket.connect(Socket.java:519)
at java.net.Socket.connect(Socket.java:469)
at TestConnect.main(TestConnect.java:17)

The program makes no attempt of resolving names. No connection to name server
is attempted.

Everything works fine if a 64 bit java VM is used, thus the problem is in the
32 bit
emulation.

The free virtual machine from GCC included with Debian fails with the same
error, but for
different reasons.

Bug#410060: xkb-data: ctrl:swapcaps doesn't work (fully) correctly

2007-02-07 Thread Peter Baumann
Package: xkb-data
Version: 0.9-4
Severity: normal

I'm having a strange problem concerning my keyboard setup.

Let me describe:

I have fvwm-crystal installed with 4 virtual desktops and setup a
mapping by ALT+CTRL+1 do move the active window onto the virtual
desktop 1 (of course, pressing ALT+CTRL+4 moves the window to
desktop 4).

If I setup my xkb config like this:

  $ setxkbmap -v
  Trying to build keymap using the following components:
  keycodes:   xfree86+aliases(qwerty)
  types:  complete
  compat: complete
  symbols:pc(pc105)+us
  geometry:   pc(pc105)

it works as expected. But as I like to have Caps_Lock as an additional
CTRL Key, I run

  $ setxkbmap -layout us -option ctrl:nocaps
  $ setxkbmap -v
  Trying to build keymap using the following components:
  keycodes:   xfree86+aliases(qwerty)
  types:  complete
  compat: complete
  symbols:pc(pc105)+us+ctrl(nocaps)
  geometry:   pc(pc105)

and now Caps_Lock behaves like CTRL. I can move my window to every
desktop *except* to desktop 1. That means pressing the keys
Caps_Lock+ALT+1 does nothing. But pressing CTRL+ALT+1 behaves as
it should. (so does Caps_Lock+Alt+2..4)

If I could do anything more specific to resolve this issue feel free to ask.

-Peter Baumann

I don't now if it's usefull, but I attached the output of xev
pressing CTRL+ALT+1 because Caps_Lock+ALT+1 had _NO_ output.

Bug#410056: xsmbrowser: wins server ip info not obtained from smb.conf

2007-02-07 Thread Peter Stelmachovic
Package: xsmbrowser
Version: 3.4.0-10
Severity: important

The xsmbrowser is not properly handling the wins server info
from smb.conf. More specifically the parameter
default_samba_wins_server remains empty even if there is
corresponding entry in smb.conf.

The patch attached below has solved the problem in my case.

Bug#349616: still here - checks/debconf: false alarm about settitle

2007-02-07 Thread Damyan Ivanov
 Damyan's mail server doesn't accept mail from mine (he uses SORBS, which
 runs an extortion racket for delisting that I refuse to participate in),
 so be aware that he won't have seen my reply.

Fortunately, being surprised I don't get any reply, I checked the
bugreport via the web :)

I'll test your proposals and report back. The -udeb parts are unclear
to me too.

P.S. Meanwhile, I dropped SORBS. I hope I wont be buried under tons of

What MPM are you using? Can we see output of strace for the process
that's handling your connection?
If you use a forking MPM, you could set MinSpareServers and StartServers
to 1 and attach strace to the single Apache child you will have.

Bug#409773: Solution

2007-02-07 Thread Erwin Gaubitzer
After some testing I found the solution to my problem:

First I found that there were cases when it worked and others when it didn't
work.
Trying 'python -v examplescript.py 2 logfile' showed that in the nonworking
case
Numeric was loaded and in the other numpy.

In the end I found out that it wasn't working when I was in my homedir and
there I had an ancient resource-file which prevented the sourcing of the one in
/etc :

-rw-r--r--  1 gaubitzer gaubitzer   41 2004-07-13 17:12
/home/gaubitzer/matplotlibrc

I don't remember if I intentionally created this file or if this was the
resource file
of some previous matplotlib version. The effect was that removing this file
removed the problem.

If someone else also has this file in the homedir please add it to this bug
report to
find out if the file is a relict of old versions.

Greetings
Erwin

Bug#410016: ITP: Orange-data-mining -- Component-based data mining software

Am Mittwoch, den 07.02.2007, 13:03 +0900 schrieb Charles Plessy:

   Package name: Orange-data-mining

Sounds very interesting.

 Orange is released under General Public License (GPL) and as such is
 free if you use it under these terms. We do, however, oblige the users
 to cite the following white paper together with any other work that
 accompanied Orange any time you use Orange in your publications:

This is a VERY strange addition. I think it is

 a) incompatible with the GPL, and as it links with at least Qt, this
makes Orange indistributable.
 b) senseless, because if Orange is used in a scientific publication
they have to be mentioned anyways - maybe not with this exact paper,
but I am confident everybody uses that exact paper if they do not
oblige the users, but ask them to use this paper - not another.
This of course does not help with other publications like magazins
and such.

Bye,
   Alain

Thanx! Is it any idea to start a discussion about 'LOCALDOMAIN' being
excluded from this list? It's a bit annoying that one cannot use 'ping'
with LOCALDOMAIN as regular user. As I read the manpage this is the only
way a regular user can overwrite the entry in /etc/resolv.conf.
