I got everything working for me again temporarily by telling saslauthd to use
ldap directly instead of via pam.

In /etc/default/saaslauthd set your mechanism to ldap.

I think I can reproduce this. Unfortunately, I am on my way out
of town, and I have not been able to find the source of the bug. I
shall be back next week, and I'll try and get to the bottom of this

Can you please try to run topshelf from the commandline and see what
errors you get? To do so, do
python /usr/lib/gnome-panel/topshelf.py
(assuming it has been installed to the default location). You can also
just run python topshelf.py on the unzipped tarball directly.
