I did not change any configuration (just installed the two packages). This is not a grave bug, it's easy to install rxvt or xterm and configure seyon to use those. Thank you for warning me about it. Please consider adding a very visible warning in the NEWS.Debian file (I'd add it as a debconf note of priority high, but to each its own) about it ASAP. for another description of the same bug. It's rather annoying that they have changed the behaviour so blatantly from what people are used to... So, after a non-joke merge I have a thousand files I have to manually verify for conflicts, because CVS will flag *all* of them the same way in the cvs status and cvs update commands (which are almost always the means used to verify a working copy before a commit), on top of allowing commits of conflicted crap without a warning? I didn't test a graphical front-end, but people using those expect to have those bright-red ! marks on conflicted files after a merge, I guess this won't work anymore either. Bug#377109: Remove cdrtools

The sane way is to remove cdrtools from Debian main (unstable) and add a free replacement, most possible a fork from the last free version (which had only the CDDL licensed build scripts, which can easily be replaced by some automake thing). If you want to join that effort - contact me. For Debian etch I dont think its a big problem right now, dependencies will stop it from getting removed before we release. I'm not convinced that what's already in testing is safe to ship with etch, to be honest. I'll dig into the build system changes and prepare a replacement, unless somebody else (Eduard?) already has a similar replacement ready. The existing GPL code should be fine; if needs be we can simply go back to the last GPLed build system and fix from there. A good free replacement is needed, but that clearly won't hit etch... -- Steve McIntyre, Cambridge, UK.[EMAIL PROTECTED] Welcome my son, welcome to the machine. signature.asc Description: Digital signature

Bug#393039: Much simpler patch possible
The patch suggested for this bug is a little overboard; the original code looks like it was trying to use the Linux system call interface to get around the lack of 64-bit seek support in userland. Bug#497270: Reviewing data in the debian-cd packages
Daniel's helpful bug (#497270) points out that we have embedded copies of isolinux in the debian-cd package. It's prompted me to look for other embedded data, and I've found the following list: tack:~/debian/debian-cd/debian-cd$ find . -type f | xargs file | \ grep -v text | grep -v -e \.png -e \.jpg -e \.gif | \ awk '{print $1}' ./data/etch/sbm.bin.gz: ./data/etch/isolinux.bin: ./data/cts_amiga_info.tar.gz: ./data/macinstall-cd.tar.gz: ./data/lenny/sbm.bin.gz: ./data/lenny/vesamenu.c32: ./data/lenny/isolinux.bin: ./data/sarge/sbm.bin.gz: ./data/sarge/isolinux.bin: Of those: * isolinux.bin and vesamenu.c32 come from the syslinux package * sbm.bin.gz comes from the sbm package I can add code to extract the appropriate binaries from each package at CD build time, in much the same way as we use debootstrap from the archive. It'll slow things down a little, but that's not as important as following licensing. There's another implication, though... Normal weekly builds will automatically pick up the appropriate source as part of the source CD/DVD builds, so they're OK. However, more painfully, the current daily netinst/businesscard builds don't produce source images. If things change quickly in the syslinux/sbm packages there is a chance that the source for the exact versions used in the daily images may not remain on the mirrors. To be totally safe, we'll need to track versions of packages that go into the daily images (both packages and the used binary files) and archive those too. Yay. Other files (hence the cc: to the m68k folks): * cts_amiga_info.tar.gz * macinstall-cd.tar.gz are both provided to boot m68k machines, and they each contain binary files (icons and boot files, AFAICS). I have no idea how those files are generated, nor what the licensing situation is for them. Hi Max, I'm concerned by your bug report. I can't reproduce it here at all, so I'm curious what your setup is: * what access method are you using for your repository? Bug#507445: gnupg-doc orig.tar.gz missing in main
Package: gnupg-doc Version: 2003.04.06-5 Severity: serious Hi, As gnupg-doc has moved between non-free and main, it looks like the orig.tar.gz hasn't moved across to match. This is a know issue in DAK; cross-component moves don't always pick up on source dependencies properly and move the orig.tar.gz as well. I know this is not necessarily *your* bug, but the easiest workaround is to simply re-upload with a new upstream version to trigger dak to copy the new upstream orig.tar.gz into the right place. Bug#239111: Grub is shockingly bad code
Thanks to Rob McQueen for doing a lot of research into this for his mail about this bug on 12 Dec 2008. Based on that mail, I've looked through the code in an attempt to find a way to implement a reasonable fix: using FIBMAP as he suggested. After several hours of working through the source, I give up. It's a total mess and I'd much rather see grub simply removed from Debian altogether than fix this bug and allow it to live on. Highlights: * gratuitous use of nested functions * horrific interfaces that don't pass enough information around internally, leading to: * functions passing internal state around via umarked global variables, relying on side effects * significantly obfuscated code * the core bug as described by Rob: accessing a block device underneath an active filesystem and assuming that the results will be safe and/or correct. I *know* that grub is a bootloader, so it's always going to end up having some nasty lowlevel code somewhere. But that's no excuse for the code quality I've just seen. After this experience, I'm about to remove grub from all my systems. My guess is, that it's a problem related to NSS, because network is not yet up when gdm is started. Could you try a small hack and add a sleep 30 to the network-manager init script, after the daemon has started, in order to give it some time to establish a network connection before gdm/X is started. Sure, I can give that a try tomorrow when I'm back in the office. I'm wondering how that might work, though: this is well before anybody even attempts to log in, i.e. before gdm displays the login box. I don't know if I made that clear before... OK, that didn't help at all I'm afraid. After the delay, the system continued on and hung in just the same way at gdm startup. Debugging further, running gdm under strace shows that the last useful thing it does is send AUTH EXTERNAL 30 via dbus. Don't expect any miracles though, as this is my first time in the GRUB 2 code. ;) If anyone has any thoughts on what the problem might be or familiarity with the GRUB kernel's initialization of the video subsystem, that would be helpful. I think (with respect) that Vladimir was mistaken when he said that the video changes in 20100702-1 only affected the EFI port. One effect of these changes was to load the video_cirrus and video_bochs modules by default (you can test whether this is the culprit by commenting them out in grub.cfg). AFAICT the failure started with yesterdays build. Is there a way to access old logs on cdbuilder.debian.org? Not currently; each build overwrites the previous log at the moment. That could be changed, but I've not looked into it yet. From the build log it seems that the build host is using a locally modified version of genisoimage. Therefore I'm not filing a bug against genisoimage yet. Yup. The problem is in the guts of the HFS hybrid code in genisoimage. This has happened before occasionally, and has triggered for a couple of days here but now (fingers crossed) things are working again. The reason we're using a custom genisoimage on pettersson is just to have the latest release code running on a stable host; it's just a local lenny backport. If this happens again, I'll try to take a look while things are reproducible. Ick, I hate this code and it's one of the last things that we can't replace with non-Schily ware. :-( Unfortunately I don't have access to the build machine to investigate this myself. I've just started to upgrade my main fileserver at home from Lenny to Squeeze, and I think I've been bitten by this bug (or something very similar) in a big way. I've started off with a system running a locally-built 2.6.28 kernel and a number of RAID devices, all configured with version 0.9 superblocks (the default in Lenny, AFAICT). Using my 2.6.28 kernel and mdadm version 2.6.7.2-3, things work fine. I've installed only the squeeze kernel (2.6.32) and rebooted with that, to make sure that it boots. Unfortunately, it doesn't. I see a lot of messages from the RAID assembly step, complaining that various of the RAID0 devices are missing components. Hmmm, OK. So let's go back to the old kernel and re-check. However, now when I use the 2.6.28 system I get similar problems. Previously-working devices are now not working. I'm seeing complaints all over the place that homehost definitions don't match when trying to assemble devices. *I* did not change anything here, so it suggests that something (the kernel RAID layer? mdadm init scripts in the initramfs?) has modified my superblocks in a broken way and stopped my system booting. Since then, I've tried to force update of the homehost/uuid settings in the superblocks, but to no avail. Then I saw that I was on the old superblock version that didn't store the homehost itself. I've only managed to get things up and running by actually recreating the RAID1 devices by hand, using the same settings as the previous devices. Scary stuff... :-( Yet if I reboot into the new kernel again, things fall apart again. Even on a newly-created v1.2 device. Bug#570516: md UUID changed

As the bug report (and Neil) says, this could be related to homehost, but I cannot quite figure out how this would happen. It is true that mdadm on Debian was using --auto-update-homehost up until 3.0-1, because IIRC that was the only way to provide a migration path from before-homehost to then. Why the UUID would now change is complete outside of my knowledge and imagination. I have never seen this problem. I'm surprised too - I've never seen anything like this before either, and I've been using md for many years on this and other systems. Since then, I've tried to force update of the homehost/uuid settings in the superblocks, but to no avail. Then I saw that I was on the old superblock version that didn't store the homehost itself. They do store them, but as part of the UUID. However, without --auto-update-homehost, I do not see a way in which the UUID should be updated. I've only managed to get things up and running by actually recreating the RAID1 devices by hand, using the same settings as the previous devices. Scary stuff... :-( Yet if I reboot into the new kernel again, things fall apart again. Even on a newly-created v1.2 device. Try this instead: In initramfs, remove the /etc/mdadm/mdadm.conf file and replace it with a scan: mdadm -Escpartitions /etc/mdadm/mdadm.conf then -A (assemble) your arrays, either individually or with -Asayes. Then boot your system. Once the system is up, compare the output of /usr/share/mdadm/mkconf with the contents of /etc/mdadm/mdadm.conf and update the file with the data from the command output. When done, run update-initramfs -u and now the system should boot. Hmmm, OK. I'll try that tonight when I'm in front of the system again. This bug has been puzzling me all along, which is why I have not been able to fix it. I am sorry it caused you grief. Ack. If I can help debug in any way, just let me know. -- Steve McIntyre, Cambridge, UK.st...@einval.com I suspect most samba developers are already technically insane...
