Other than NIS itself, are there any other NIS-like administrations out
there? From and administrators point of view, NIS works great - but users
can simply examine the passwd file by using ypcat (sure, all be-it a
mangled passwd field) - is there any way to stop that? (Hence my question
using dpkg with the
--force* commands - however, I don't recommend it unless it's a last resort.

I take you you've got sysvinit version 2.70-1 installed. I reported a bug

Best way (the way I do it) is to do this:
clear /etc/motd
However, make sure you make a backup copy of your original MOTD so you can
then edit the file and after all the ascii characters put it back.

The Debian project was started by Ian Murdock - his wifes name was Debra (I
think that's the spelling of it - not sure) so hence forth Debian was

went from 250kb/sec on their lan to around 600kb/sec. I think that's a
substantial increase IMO.

cdrom as you have there just above? When I re-installed Debian with my
cdrom I had to do this and it worked.

that - both my scsi disks are SCSI-2 and yours is a SCSI-3, perhaps it

for it - I'd give up if you are going to try to use it for X-windows I
