No dices si estás en GNOME pero si es así, se trata del gestor de 
contraseñas (seahorse keyring) que te pregunta cada vez que quieres 
acceder a un recurso samba, ftp... o cuando te conectas a un punto de 
acceso wifi.

 Y me pone una caja de texto donde debo poner la contraseña.
 
 He probado con todas las contraseñas (la de root y la del usuario) y me
 dice que la contraseña es incorrecta. Pero si le doy al botón cancelar
 me entra sin problema, ósea me saca la ventana para loguearme en la red.

La contraseña debería ser la del usuario con la que has iniciado la 
sesión en Debian salvo que hayas definido manualmente otra distinta.

 Lo malo de esto que si le digo que guarde de forma permanente la
 contraseña no lo hace, ósea cada vez que vuelvo a encender la PC y trato
 de entrar al mismo lugar me sigue pidiendo la contraseña, por lo que no
 me la está guardando.

¿Te pregunta si la quieres guardar de manera permanente? :-?

 Como podría solucionar este problema?

Yo lo he desactivado porque es una auténtica molestia (no afecta a la 
clave que hayas definido en el recurso samba). Si no recuerdo mal, podías 
hacerlo ejecutando en una consola seahorse y activando esta opción para 
las claves dentro de Contraseñas y sobre el recurso que quieras, 
cambiar contraseña y dejar este campo en banco.

Particionar disco USB con NTFS

Hola lista

Estoy intentando particionar un disco USB externo que tiene 500GB.
siguiendo este manual [1] al terminar todo los pasos me tira un error
al guardar los cambios no se por que..el error es el siguiente:

Se están sincronizando los discos.

Cuando le doy de nuevo el comando dfisk /dev/sde si que me muestra
como particionado

Exacto. Tanta GUI nos impide ver el bosque.

 Si está montado, desmontá /dev/sda7. Después fsck -f /dev/sda7 y prestá
 mucha atención a los mensajes. Y necesitás el backup a mano para
 restaurar cosas que puedan perderse

También es importante ver los registros de inicio en /var/log/syslog 
para ver por qué no se monta automáticamente la partición /home/$USER. No 
es normal que de un día para otro se genere este tipo de error.

Problemas con el sonido

Buenos dias,

Mi problemas es el siguiente, no se me escucha el sonido por la salida
principal, solo escucho cuando conecto los audifonos.

Ya he reinstalado Debian 7.0 y al principio si se escucha, apago la
computadora y cuando vuelvo a iniciar el gnome shell no hay sonido.
Instale el lxde y tampoco.

Reinicio el servidor alsa-utils y pulseaudio y tampoco me llega el sonido.

Actualice a debian 7.2 y tampoco tengo sonido solo por los audifonos,
y no escucho ni videos, ni musica ni nada.

Busque en google y no consigo algo parecido, es por ello que acudo a la lista.

En verdad no se que me puede estar secuestrando el sonido de la
laptop, para poder matar y/o iniciar ese servicio o lo que sea.

Mi controladora de audio es la siguiente.

00:1b.0 Audio device: Intel Corporation 5 Series/3400 Series Chipset
High Definition Audio (rev 05)

En conclusion, instalo debian 7 y se me escucha el sonido, apago la
maquina y deja de funcionar solo se escucha por los auriculares.

El wifi es un asquito, así de simple. Donde esté un cable que se quite lo 
inalámbrico. El problema que tienes puede ser debido a varios factores: 
driver wifi inestable (el más probable), punto de acceso con 
interferencias, canal muy saturado, exceso de seguridad en el AP (WPA2/
AES), etc.

¿Qué controladora wifi tienes instala y qué driver usas? (como root, 
lscpi -vk). Podrías comprobar si existe alguna versión actualizada.

 Seguro se preguntarán: ¿y la conexión al router es siempre estática o
 dinámica?, ¿funciona el DHCP?, ¿a otros equipos se les cae la conexión?
 y cosas así. Y les respondo: no, es dinámica; sí; y no siempre: hay
 casos, pero son muy raros, se cae primero la wifi de las máquinas con
 Window$ que la mía... espero me alumbren un poco el camino...

Ná, eso no es relevante :-P

Esa es la versión que se encuentra en Debian testing/sid:

Verás, las versiones estables de Debian (wheezy, actualmente), no 
actualizan los paquetes (ni añaden nuevos) una vez que salen publicadas, 
tan sólo reciben actualizaciones de seguridad y mejoras, pero poco más. 
Quien quiere tener siempre las últimas versiones de los programas suele 
optar por las versiones de prueba (testing) o sid.

 he sido un usuario de windows desde siempre y siempre quise meterme en
 linux, pero siempre hubo drama con el tema de drivers y software, es un
 mundo el poder instalar un simple programa que no está en el listado de
 paquetes (sin conocimiento de linux, como es mi caso), por eso, si este
 correo sirve para meter paquetes que utilizo y lo añadís para actualizar
 a las últimas versiones, genial

Pues me parece que poco podemos hacer nosotros. Como ves, el paquete 
actualizado ya se encuentra en las ramas testing/sid, así que en el caso 
de que quieras un paquete fuera de los repositorios oficiales de la 
versión estable siempre puedes compilarlo desde las fuentes o instalarlo 
desde otro sitio por tu cuenta y riesgo.

la tarjeta, valores gamma/brillo/tonalidad incluido.

Mira a ver si cargando el módulo snd-hda-intel te funciona.

Primero descarga todos los módulo de audio que tienes iniciados (como 
root):

modprobe -r snd_intel8x0; modprobe -r snd_pcm_oss; modprobe -r snd_mixer_oss

Y luego carga el otro:

modprobe snd-hda-intel ; modprobe snd-pcm-oss ; modprobe snd-mixer-oss ; 
modprobe snd-seq-oss

Te dice que tienes que reiniciar para que los cambios hagan efecto.

De todas formas, sigue los pasos que indican en el manual y que en esta 
fase -según la guía- sería continuar con el formateo (mkfs.ntfs) de la/s 
partición/es.

¿Sólo tienes una tarjeta de sonido detectada? Pon la salida de aplay -l.

 En conclusion, instalo debian 7 y se me escucha el sonido, apago la
 maquina y deja de funcionar solo se escucha por los auriculares.

Por el tipo de problema que comentas tiene toda la pinta de que tengas 
que definir algún parámetro en el módulo del kernel para que alsa detecte 
correctamente las salidas disponibles o bien que el sistema detecte una 
segunda tarjeta de sonido (¿hdmi?) y la use como salida de audio 
predeterminada.

La cuestión es que después de hacer fsck en sda7, a partir de aquí me
montó el home y mi usuario, pero el caso es que no me cargan las
aplicaciones como el nautilus, el tweak tool, opciones de
configuración ... Tan solo me carga el Chrome y al menos el Opera.

Y a la consola tan solo puedo entrar cuando inicio el sistema en modo
recovery, una vez cargado el sistema gráfico ya no puedo entrar ni en
la terminal ni aplicando cualquier combinación de teclas para matar
las X.

No se que carallo pasa

 terminal ni aplicando cualquier combinación de teclas para matar las X.

Exacto. Tanta GUI nos impide ver el bosque.

Si está montado, desmontá /dev/sda7. Después fsck -f /dev/sda7 y
prestá mucha atención a los mensajes. Y necesitás el backup a mano
para restaurar cosas que puedan perderse

También es importante ver los registros de inicio en /var/log/syslog

Ya he reinstalado Debian 7.0 y al principio si se escucha, apago la
computadora y cuando vuelvo a iniciar el gnome shell no hay sonido.
Instale el lxde y tampoco.

Reinicio el servidor alsa-utils y pulseaudio y tampoco me llega el sonido.

Actualice a debian 7.2 y tampoco tengo sonido solo por los audifonos,
y no escucho ni videos, ni musica ni nada.

Busque en google y no consigo algo parecido, es por ello que acudo a la lista.

En verdad no se que me puede estar secuestrando el sonido de la
laptop, para poder matar y/o iniciar ese servicio o lo que sea.

Mi controladora de audio es la siguiente.

00:1b.0 Audio device: Intel Corporation 5 Series/3400 Series Chipset
High Definition Audio (rev 05)

En conclusion, instalo debian 7 y se me escucha el sonido, apago la
maquina y deja de funcionar solo se escucha por los auriculares.


Disculpa pero me confunde lo que dices, ¿qué es lo que quieres decir?

funcionó mas?

Lo que quisiera saber es si en algún momento suena y deja de sonar, o si

Esto me huele a que no se completó la descarga...Por defecto te lo
debe de dejar en donde estipule el navegador, aunque estando en fase
beta mega.co.nz se tiene que poner las pilas...A mi lo que me ha
pasado son entre otras cosas, que se queda trufada la descarga y no
avanza, o que con chrome consume mucha cpu ya que usa su propio gestor
de descarga...


Opino igual, parece no haberse descargado por completo.

Mi sugerencia para ese tipo de descargas es que lo bajes vía torrent.  
Para eso:


1) instala un cliente bittorrent (te sugiero qBittorrent)

2)  Buscas por google.  fulanito película/album/canción torrent

3)  Vas al enlace correspondiente y  descargas el torrent o inicias 
directamente la descarga con el cliente bittirrent.


La ventaja de este método es que puedes pausar la descarga cuando lo 
desees y en el caso de qBittorrent (no se si otros lo hacen) te permite 
bajarle la velocidad a tu descarga por si necesitas ancho de banda para 
otras cosas (como actualizar Debian por ejemplo).



Reintentalo y fijate en que te cree el fichero temporal mientras está
descargando...

that syslog stopped rotating at 2010.

-rw-r- 1 adm0 Nov  1 07:50 syslog.1.gz

I checked /etc/cron.daily and did not find entry for rsyslog.
Maybe that's the cause?

Or somehow there is an error and logrotate refuses to run. In that case
run logrotate manually with the debug-switch -d and see if anything
strange appears.

On a stock Debian system logrotate is used to rotate rsyslog
logfiles. This is configured in /etc/logrotate.d/rsyslog.
Logrotate is invoked at /etc/cron.daily/logrotate.

Now, that listing shows that someone (possibly logrotate) DID create an
empty syslog.1.gz file (on 1st Nov 2013), and that suggests that
logrotate is misconfigured somehow.

Can you please post a contents of /etc/logrotate.d/rsyslog?

Multiple dpkg warning (non-empty directories) during upgrade to wheezy


Hi,

After upgrading squeeze -- wheezy I examined the session transcript 
and found multiple warnings like this:


dpkg: warning: unable to delete old directory '/some/path': Directory not empty

In few cases the said directory was deleted after all.
But in most cases the directory is indeed still there.
The residing files were not edited by me, or dropped by me.
I feel uncomfortable having such debris in the file-system but am not 
sure if this is really something to be concerned about.


To clean up I thought of doing for each 'leftover' (= file, directory)

$ apt-file search 'leftover'
# and assuming no package claims ownership of 'leftover'
$ rm  'leftover'  # or rmdir 'leftover'

Does it make sense?  Or did I miss something?

And just for curiousity: what could be the cause for the failure of 
dpkg to clean-up those directories?

There is nothing more standard/portable in Unix-like systems then POSIX
shell.

 Another advantage it have, is that it is able to parallelize the start 
 of daemons, and to only start daemons when they are first used. It is 
 not an important feature on a server, but for desktops or laptops which 
 are computers you can start lot of times in a day, it can save time. On 
 that particular point, my opinion is that it is not the good solution: 
 the good solution is to only start daemons you really need.

I do not see 'start daemons when they are first used' is quite an
important benefit and start in parallel is already supported by
sysvinit (startpar).

I'd say the problem is in the lack of real effort to solve programming

I don't think UNIX philosophy is not so important. First of all, the
principle of all-might is by nature authoritarian. All-in-one
solutions are a characteristic of big companies that want to impress
their users, while not giving them enough real benefit. Systemd makes
system startup more complicated and you need to know not only shell
scripts but also systemd syntax. This will make many people unable to
solve their system startup problems and force them pay money to big
companies, which is in essence what big companies want. Debian should
not put interests of big companies above interests of its users.

 LXDE, on the other hand, would 
 be a better choice for a UNIX philosophy fan (better, not perfect, since 
 UNIX philosophy imply that softwares discuss between them by text only, 
 which can not really be easily done when you come to GUIs. I think that 
 raw UNIX philosophy is not adapted to modern graphical uses, but this is 
 a personal opinion which can be changed rather easily since I want to be 
 wrong).

I do not think UNIX philosophy is not wrong, I think users are
wrong. Users want false impression of power and that only makes them
dependent on the software that makes them such an illusion, similar to
effect of narcotics. Look what RMS says about companies want to
control their users with software.

Short of using 'apt-file search' instead of 'dpkg -S' this is correct.
The difference is apt-file will find you some package even it's not

Good scenario:
Package 1 created directory, put some files into it. Package 2 created
some files in this directory too. You remove package 1, keep package 2.

Bad scenario:
Package was installed and its' post-install script created some files
which do not belong to any package. You remove this package.

On a stock Debian system logrotate is used to rotate rsyslog
logfiles. This is configured in /etc/logrotate.d/rsyslog.
Logrotate is invoked at /etc/cron.daily/logrotate.

Now, that listing shows that someone (possibly logrotate) DID create an
empty syslog.1.gz file (on 1st Nov 2013), and that suggests that
logrotate is misconfigured somehow.

Can you please post a contents of /etc/logrotate.d/rsyslog?

I am sure this is not urgent, Gnome should not be default DE and even
they could easily just make two (or more) DE options in installer.
XFCE4 is on Wheezy DVD-1. 

Decisions like changing such an essential part of OS should not be made
in rush.

With systemd, your system cannot start without DBus to coordinate
processes. This makes early system startup to complicated. You cannot
start your system w/o DBus installed and working. This can also make
problems to small/embedded systems because of increased storage/memory
consumption.

SysVInit simply works. Symbolic links are a simple and natural way to
control system startup. We have update-rc.d. And LSB tags provide
protection for order of services.

We should just improve our startup scripts, instead of adapting
everything to systemd. We would have to learn syntax and way of usage
of systemd, and for additional flexibility we would have to use shell
scripts anyway. 

I do not see enough reasons for Gnome to depend on systemd, other than
forcing us to switch to systemd for interests of big corporations.

in /var/log/cron.log?
Does, say, 'md5sum /var/log/syslog' runs to the completion?
What about 'cat /var/log/syslog  /dev/null'?
Can you run fsck on the filesystem containing /var/log/syslog?
What does smartctl --all shows on the partition with this filesystem?

System settings -fglrx disabled it?

In the default Debian  desktop (Gnome, I believe, definitely not KDE) I
have lost the ability to open the system settings item in either the
Applications/System Tools/Preferences menu or the dropdown menu from the
username in the upper right corner.

This  was triggered by my installation of a new video card. I suspect the
installation of the Radeon Catalyst control panel, which allows you to
control the video card settings, is the exact point it happened. Can
anybody verify if fglrx-control disables system settings? I believe that is
the only package I chose manually, the rest came along with fglrx.

Debian is not just a Linux distribution anymore due to Debian GNU/kFreeBSD,
and FreeBSD support *is* a big deal re. portability issues.

…which wasn't fully supported on Solaris 9 so you had to use a subset
(e.g. no $(subshell) syntax). Writing truly portable shell scripts
across multiple UNIX families was a terrible pain and one could not
simply rely on the POSIX feature-set. I know this from bitter
experience.

I suspect C89 is/was more portable in practice, but the point OP is
making here isn't the scripting language, for portability, it's the fact
init scripts do little to abstract the differences between OSes, so
portable init scripts are very hard to achieve. E.g. Debian uses
/etc/default for overrides, Redhat-esque systems use various schemes
under /etc/sysconfig; various init scripts are written with the
assumption sh → bash which required a lot of fixing up when Debian and
Ubuntu moved to a different default sh; and on and on.

Such OS layout specifics being baked into init scripts also make it much
harder to make changes, since you break a load of init scripts when the
assumptions they rely on change.

This is why it's not just systemd that is trying to replace shell
scripts: nearly all the next-gen init systems do (launchd, upstart,
openrc… even smf with its XML).

to achieve this in the past)

It's a principle near and dear to much of the rest of our F/OSS stack,
however. The Linux kernel is monolithic (and enormous) rather than

Well, it had been moved around the world quite a bit.  In fact I
really only used it when I was travelling and during the four-five
months of the year when I live in Thailand; for the other seven-eight
months I am usually in Toronto, Canada.  The added wear and tear of
such movement may not have helped to shorten its life.

At the moment I have no plans to replace it.  Instead of carrying a
laptop back and forth between Canada and Thailand later this month I
to buy a desktop in Thailand which will be left there.  For other
travelling I can use my Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 for such things as
email access.

Sorry, my mistake. I have an old installation, /var/log/cron.log is a
leftover of etch's setup in my case. Do you have any MTA
(exim, sendmail or postfix) installed? Anytime cron job puts anything
to the stderr cron should send mail to the local root (default

Yes.

Sure, that's possible to do with livecd. But, you can also do it from a
single-user (i.e. init 1; unmount /var; run fsck on a logical volume;
reboot).

Find a physical volume corresponding to the /var logical volume.
Run smartctl --all on the disk that's containing that physical volume.
In case you have RAID (be it mdadm or dm-mirror) - run smartctl on all
disks that are part of said RAID.

While we're on it, also run smartctl -t long on said disk, wait for a
while (smartctl should say you, how much), and run smartctl --all on
the same disk again.
