i did some work removing unneeded files/devices in the /dev directory but
i still get an error ( cp: /mnt/bin/bash: No space left on device ),what
command i need to do to know the space left on my disk and does there is
some utility to compress the library so they still remain executable (i
allready taken care off the potential performance hit because the root
disk is copied to a ramdrive and root is mounted there).

   my Debian 6x86 platform.

   I'd backed up the MBR of /dev/hda and have it saved away
   in two files on two boxes.  Also made the mods  to my /etc/lilo
   configuration as you suggested.  Debian is the default boot;
   other=bsd.  

   Do you see anything more to be done before I install the loader?

My /dev directory only takes up 1.4MB of space.  To my understanding, it
normally isn't a good idea to erase device files.  The same goes for any
system file.  Anyway, you can use the df and du commands to find out
what your disk usage is.  Look at the man pages for the appropriate
command line arguments.

You mentioned that you copied your /dev directory in an earlier message.
Copying the /dev directory is generally not a good idea, at least for the
device files.  Use the MAKEDEV shell script in /dev or the mknod command
to recreate your /dev directory.  The first (and last) time I tried
copying my /dev directory on UN*X system, specifically Solaris, the copy
ended up going in to an infinite loop when the /dev/zero device was
copied.

HD-SelfTest

Hi again,


my root HD (it's an IBM SCSI) is capable of executing a SelfTest after
72 hours uptime. During this time the HD is 'locked' for approx. 30 secs
and can't be accessed in this period. It can't be switched off (at least
this is stated in the description). But i think this 'feature' was
included for workstations and systems running continously - so Un*x and
Linux should be able to handle this in a defined way.
Is there a supported or Linux-spezific way to let the system know about
this?
If not, any suggestions?

Sumasketch Plus?

 My kernel was compiled with gcc 2.8.1 from the debian kernel-package

This is the problem.  I don't know if specific flags to gcc, or removal
of flags, will make the problem go away, but what it does it to
miscompile the kernel such that anything using the ioport will crash.

What I did was to replace ioport.c in the kernel tree with the same file
from the latest development kernel.  This worked.  I also used 2.7.2.3
to compile ioport.c only, then used 2.8.0 to re-link the whole kernel
(and compile everything else).  This also worked.

Currently though, I have removed all traces of 2.8.x from my disk
because it had caused me even more errors, and I came to the point of
throwing my computer out of the window.  Don't ask, it was a mess.  I
certainly don't trust the GCCs until they have proven themselves, after
getting burned.

If you use hamm, there is both a imlib and a gdk_imlib package(which I
maintain).  If not then you need to have gtk-dev installed to compile
gdk_imlib.  Those are the files it says are missing.

Don't mind me, but what is awe-netscape ?

I also have this bus error.  I read that switching to libc5.4.33 will
solve the problem as there was a change in malloc() implementation that
causes this, and I have also tried the 5.4.38 in hamm's oldlibs.  I am
still getting a bus error.  For this matter, setting XNLSPATH for the
locale dir does NOT work, despite what it tells you.  You *must* have
the locale dir in a hardcoded location (i486-linuxlibc1's lib/X11 or
something, doesn't really matter) or a link there; setting XNLSPATH
makes no difference (although, strangely, MOZILLA_HOME and XKEYSYMDB
still work...)

kernel-package instructions questions

  i've started to use kernel-package and have a few questions.
  
  1) after doing a make config (or menuconfig, etc.), there is
 some mention on the screen about doing:
 
   make dep; make clean
 
 however, in the kernel-package docs, the next step after doing a
 make config is:
 
make-kpkg clean

 (i think).  so, should i do a 'make dep; make clean', or not?
 
 also, should i do a 'make mrproper' before doing a 'make config'?
 if i missed something in the kernel-package docs, please let me know :-)
 
  2) i've successfully made custom kernels for machines w/o pcmcia
 slots, but i haven't had success when i try to get pcmcia support
 working.  i realize there is a separate package for pcmcia support
 (actually was it two more packages?)  does someone have some hints 
 somewhere i can have a look at or a description of how pcmcia support 
 is supposed to work?  (wouldn't it be nice for it to be integrated 
 into the kernel?  is this the case for 2.1.x?)

Qt install problem

I am trying to install KDE, 
but the Qt compile/installation failed. I followed the instructions, including
the ..profile additions to the best of my (very limited) knowledge.

/qt make goes along for a while, then:

and so on for four more files, followed by 3 errors.

The KDE instructions say I need libgr, and that it should be included in
most distributions. I could find no trace of it on my system, so I downloaded
and installed libgr-2.0.13. Qt make still does the same thing.

dpkg won't install KDE, it says qt1
is not installed, also libgif2.  Do I need to download libgif2 from
somewhere? A search at linux.org came up empty.
This is the first time I've tried to compile anything, so I have no idea what
I'm doing.

make-kpkg clean does all that clean does, and more. There is
 no need to run make dep; make-kpkg handles all that. You can use
 make-kpkg to vreate pcmcia packages in sync with your kernel. Look
 into /usr/doc/pcmcia*/ and /usr/doc/kernel-pacakge/README for
 details.

sdram and linux

Hi. Just looking for a little more info.

Just installed 64megs 168 pin sdram (replacing the 64megs of the usual
type 72 pin edo stuff) in my system and it appears
to be causing file system corruption, as indicated on boot
up by fsck (attempted boot up, actually).  Booting from the rescue
disk and running fsck reports lots of problems, fixes them all, but the
problems reappear at the next reboot from the hard disk drive.  Also ran
into a problem with programs exiting unexpectedly and core dumping for
no apparent reason.

Tried my Debian kernels 2.0.30 and 2.0.33 with the same
result and put the original memory back, which seems to
have fixed the problem with either kernel version.

Has there been any similar reports or other problems using 
168 pin sdram type memory or are there any hardware or kernel 
settings that I may have overlooked to make this work?  The 
memory works ok on 'other' o.s.'s and machines.

configuration. Let me explain. I don't want every workstation user an
network/system administrator. With NT I can configure from server wich
volumes will be maped for each user, wich workstation each user will be
granted access, wich printer each user will be granted use. As well I
can use the login script to set the general preferences and others 
Can I do that with Linux (UNIX)? Can I, from the server, attach or
intall resources to workstations?
Can the user login only into the server (not the localhost login)?

 I use Debian for servers.  It is easiest to keep up to date using remote
 administration and has been extremely stable. One thing to look for is a
 local consultant that has experiance in performance tuning.  The default
 distribution kernels can require some minor patching to raise the number
 of allowable open files and processes that might be required for a very
 busy server. This is just one example but the point is that a local
 consultant can smooth the transition and save you considerable time and
 money in the long run.

 Maybe you just need to remove the symlinks.  I notice that my
 /usr/X11R6/lib/i486-linuxaout directory is empty (hamm).

   chuckle Can't do that Bill, they've got to point to somewhere!  Strange how
my tunnel vision works -- there are symlinks there, where are the libraries?
There must be libraries somewhere! :-)

   Seriously, yes, that solved the problem nicely.

AMD K5, Netscape, netstat zombies

I got some problem running Netscape 3.04 after I recompiled the kernel.
Simply Netscape hangs waiting for a netstat process which becomes zombie.
Searching on the net I found this message that was the answer:

 really nasty problems. Netscape would spawn zombie tasks (netstat) and I

So I recompiled for 386 and the problem is solved. Neither 486 is working.

Does someone have traced more extensively this problem? Are other programs
affected besides Netscape? Is it only a K5-100 CPU problem? Are newer
kernels affected too?

For the statistics my system is

- AMD K5-100
- Debian 1.3.1.r6 with custom kernel 2.0.30
- Netscape 3.04 (the only program which seems to be affected, but I do
  not tested extensively).

To solve the problem I changed only the CPU option in kernel config.

Samba config/password problem; Win95 OEMSR2

   I'm running my Linux box (hamm) to two Win95 machines which are
running OEMSR2 with the Dial-Up Networking 1.2 upgrade.

   After upgrading to the latest Samba I am having trouble getting
access to my printer (which is on the Linux box) and my home
directories.  I have read and reread the Samba docs and have tried
just about every combination of parameters but I still have Win95
complaining that my password to Samba is incorrect (both Win95
machines are set up with identical networking logins/passwords).

   To eliminate the problem of Win95's encrypted passwords, I have set
up one Win95 machine to use plain text passwords and left the other
as default.  Still no luck.

   What I am curious about are several things.  First, anyone have any
ideas on how to tackle this problem?  Secondly, does anyone know for
sure what type of password Win95 OEMSR2 (aka Win95B) with DUN 1.2
upgrade uses?  Thirdly, does anyone have a working /etc/smb.conf that
they could send me (I'm fairly sure that mine is okay -- it checks out
with testparm -- but just wanted to see what works).

I've got 128MB of ECC SDRAM in my hamm box and haven't had any problems.
Some people say that you should only use SDRAM that is certified to work
with your motherboard.  Did you set up your BIOS to use SDRAM instead of
DRAM?

It may be possible that you SDRAM is damaged. You usually won't notice this on
other OS's, because there is a big difference in the RAM-usage. Linux really
'uses' the memory more than on those other 'OS's'. In fact the usage is heavy
compared to other OS's.

But as Manoj stated - backup your HD - just in case... ;-)

I use Accelerated X which defaults to 24 bit color.  Did you misread my
message?  Or does xdm not use accelerated X?  I never installed xf86config,
at least not on Linux.. I do it for freebsd and am happy with 16 bit color
there.  :)  

My question was that logging in remotely gives me less color than
logging in locally.  via xdm.

I am not sure if osr2 forces encrypted passwords, but it sounds like a
possibility.  Can you smbclient to yourself in Linux to see if it will browse?
If that is successful, the problem is definatley password related... you set it
up as security=user and since windows 95 does not let you connect as (at least
in the older versions I worked with), make sure your microsoft client login
matches a unix client.
I resorted to the encrypted passwords methods which is very annoying
when adding new users... :)  But I have a lot of NT clients, I did not test it
fully with windows 95 clients, but maybe windows 95 now forces encrypted
passwords by default as well.  And how do you setup plain text passwords
through NetBios in windows 95?  Can you browse the network at all?

Xdm will use whatever is Xserver is configured.  I had my xdm using the
Acclerated-X demo server, for example. 

   My question was that logging in remotely gives me less color than
 logging in locally.  via xdm.  

If the graphics card on your remote machine can't support as many colors
as the graphics card on your local machine then you will get less colors
on the remote machine.  Xdm uses whatever X server is available on the
machine you are going to display your X session on.

lot of hardware.

The main need now is that I could use Oracle or MS SQL for NT. Is there
another one for Linux that can make presence against theese?

URGENT: Problems with bash_2.01.1-1_i386.deb pkg.

First off, I know I shouldn't have done it...
Now-- I tried to upgrade bash from hamm (I used to have bash_2.01-5.deb from 
hamm way back in January of 1998) to the newest bash_2.01.1-1_i386.deb from 
ftp1.us.debian.org last night.
The upgrade didn't go well, and now I'm stuck with no capability to do much of 
the things: I can't log in as a user or as a root (I'm still logged in as a 
root on one VC and that one sort of works). I tried downgrading to my original 
hamm bash package, but I can' mount a floppy anymore- it says that fs type 
msdos is not supported- and insmod by hand gives me a three lines of 
unresolved symbols. S, is there anything I can do in the console I'm 
still logged in or should I just reinstall the whole damn thing?
My system info (system was working fine for three full months...):
kernel 2.0.33 custom compiled
dpkg_1.4.0.21
libc6_2.06 (I think, I'm not home now...)
old bash 2.01-5 and corresponding libreadline
ncurses3.4_1.9.9 from hamm

dpkg -install output:

manually delete the existing soft links for ncurses, before running
ldconfig. Then all worked OK.

can you give a little more information?
I recently had a simmilar problem that munged my system ...but...
it wasn't ram related (tho my RAM did go bad too..for unrelated reasons)
Are you runnin gbo or hamm?
There is a package that was in hamm when it was unsatble...which is on my hamm
CD that I burned last month (while it was still unstable..about 3 weeks before
the freeze started )
I accidently installed a package (whose name I forget)...it changed the sysvinit
to use
a
differnt method...with a config file
unfortunatly it was not unmounting filesystems
when going down for reboot, it would juts kill all processes and reboot without
ever umounting / and remounting read only!
I noticed the problem after a reboot (I was in the middelk of troubleshooting
some soundcard probrlems that required reboots)
and started to debug the shutdown scripts (it took 3-4 rebpoots before i 
reaLized
that
the standard symlinks were not even being used!)
before I had the problem fixed...all of these reboots and unmounting inproperly
munged my system
my advice:
do this less /etc/init.d/rc
and look at the large description at the begining...if it says something about
running from a config file an dnot using sym links ...then I woul dsubmit
that that is you rproblem
also...
get hwtools package and try memtest86...someone on debian-devel suggested that
to me and
it picked out my bad ram quickly
thoise are my recomendations...if you are runnin gbo however...
I doubt that offending package is in bo (coul dbe tho...im too lazy to look) and
I dunno about hwtools but...hwtolls shouldn't really care whether it is bo or
hamm...
anyway memtest86 boots on its own anyway...
quick Q: does memtest86 work on SDRAM ? I know it doesn't work on
ECC or Parity ram?
I will dfind out tonight...I am trowing 64 MB od SDRAM in my machine (nice
upgrade from
32 MB of old SIMMs)

You can do all that and more...but...it is not exactly the same
for instance...the concept of mapping drives is well...not a Unix type 
concept :)
but every l-user ( I am in service..I fix PCs...I say luser because I deal with 
the
worst of the lot)
has (in the normal configuration) their own home directory which only they 
have
acess too (usually anyone can look at their home directory but cannot actually 
acess
files...
that can all be changed easily tho)
Linux doesn't assign everything with these ACLs like NT does...Unix in general
uses a system which I personally consider allot more sane :)
you can also setup security easily denoting who is allowed to login to certain 
hosts
in fact a common one is to NOT allow the root (administrator) to login
(a person would have to login and then become root to have admin privillages)
someone once said that Unix is infinitly configurable
Linux can do everything NT canfaster and on cheaper hardware.
not to mention:
I work at a very large Windows NT domain...
we have had numerous NT problems... Domain controllers going down and taking
10 000 users offline ( I am NOT exxaggerating either) but...
there are a few unix systemsin all the months I have worked here..I ahve 
NEVER
heard
of one going down!
Unix does take longer to learn...
Unix/Linux  looks ugly...until you come to find its inner beauty
it looks soo complex..until you see its Simplicity
anywayif I were you I would give it a try...

Hi all

I was looking at Debian's WWW site today at the package listings, and I noticed
that for the packages the source is avvaliable in three different formats, and
I was wondering if anyone could tell me what the differences are in these three
formats.

they are
.dsc
.orig.tar.gz
.diff.gz

I guess the .orig.tar.gz ones are standard tar.gz files but what are the .dsc
and diff.gz formats?

YEAH! I'm not a UNIX Wizard. I know a litle about TCP/IP networks. I am
just receiveing my books on Linux next week from amazon. I agree that
UNIX can do what NT can do. 

So. UNIX is NOT for WORKSTATIONS. Is this true?

If I agree to change every NT and NW host by a UNIX host I will change
too the NetBeui and IPX/SPX protocols by only TCP/IP. Are there TCP
printing services (client and server for Windows) that can work with
Laserjet and DesketJet Printers? Are there NFS (client and server) that
can me easy to configure on Windows? to share a Windows over TCP/IP (a
server is not a big problem because I want people archive important
files in the UNIX servers)?

If I want today to every user access a new area in the server to read
and write files, and I'm working with Novell or NT I will just set the
login script for each user, or each group of users. What need to be amde
in Linux? Is there Login scripts or similars?

I didn't say that to avoid additional if statement in my sugestion:
*if* you have gpm installed (check it with dpkg -s gpm) do gpmconfig,
if not, install gpm and *if* it doesn't ask you to configure (existing old

dpkg --purge gpm
dpkg -i gpm*   
looks much simpler :)

The answer would be No to both, but...
Once you have a running system, you can change practically anything you
want without even partial reinstall. Please be more specific about the 
problem you have.

to try Debian, you could always build another floppy from the CD.  For
more details, try http://www.redhat.com./.  If you are wondering,
debian.org is a volunteer organization, while redhat.com is a commercial
company, so you're more likely to get a good (peer) support from Debian.

Did you check the BIOS settings and make sure the BIOS is setup for SDRAM?
The typical access time of SDRAM is 10 ns, whereas EDO access time is typically
60 ns. You may have a timing problem. Remember, Linux is very demanding when
it comes to hardware.

why does the kernel suck up memory?

I've noticed that when I added more memory, the extra memory went into
buffers. Why? I don't have a heavily loaded system which would require
massive buffers. How can I change the kernel to stop with this unnecessary
behavior?
I'm trying to keep from using swap space. Once a swap partition is accessed,
it is never dropped and I need to _not_ access swap space for performance
reasons (IO bandwidth).

Then, edit your /etc/passwd file (with vi, probably) and change the
top line so that it contains '/bin/ash' instead of '/bin/bash' - root

No, these aren't different source formats.  You need all three files.

*.orig.tar.gz denotes pristine source.  *.dsc is the description file
... also contains md5sums and PGP signature.  *.diff.gz is the diff
file. Use dpkg-source, like so 'dpkg-source -x file.dsc' ... this will
unpack the source and apply the diff(s), set up the control file, etc.

Think of those buffers as a dynamically growing cache that
uses all available free memory on your machine. If some other
process needs the memory the cache is shrunk. That's good
behaviour there, nothing harmful.

 reasons (IO bandwidth).

Some parts of memory are not normally needed. Once those
are swapped out, they'll propably never be swapped out.
It's better that way, it frees memory to be used as cache.

absolutley not! it makes a great workstation!the possibilities are 
endless...hell
you could even have a virtulaly diskless workstation that would have only enough
disk to get booted and then get all of its filesystem through
the network NFS system...the possibilities are endless...
you could even set up a workstation as just nothing more than a glorified X
terminal
(for a fraction of the cost of a real one)

hmm... yes...if yopu want Windows to directly run lpr then you may have trouble
but...
you can setup the equivalent of an NT Print Queue (thats what we call em at
work)
on th elinux machine and it would work transparently for the windows
machines...once you set it up

NFS clients are available for windows... for a comercial one check outNCD 
software
(they also have a great X server for windows)
but I doubt thatshwat you REALLY want. samba is a program for linux
that shares files using lanmanager protocols (thats what WinNT, win95 and
some others use)
it can even lie and claim to be an WinNT system!
it works REALLY WELL (in my experiance anyway)

well...that depends...if you mean to have them logon to a windows machine and

drives mapp then it would be similar...ive never tried that tho.
if you mean directly under linux... just make the file area...
it will be in the filesystem where evryone can see it and everyone you give 
acess
too can acess it
no need to edit any logon scripts...it should already be mounted

It might also be some sort of addressing error that does not show up
in Win.

No.  But things are harder for starters than in NT.  Only that if
using NT, after 12 months you will have been left with a system crying
to be reinstalled perhaps.  And will still not have had to reboot even
once if you are using Linux...

Yes.  lp is concerned with redirection only, you can continue to use
the same drivers...

Yes.  But they aren't free.  Your choice is wider if you use only 95
and NT Intel, not NT on RISC.  For Intel only, Sun has a fine solution
for NFS and NIS.  For Alpha compatibility, Sysgraph has NFS.

You can look at the Samba pages... http://samba.anu.edu.au/samba/.
That's what you'd use if you do not want to make changes to your users'
environment.

yes it is true...it takes a while to switch the thinking from windows mode to
linux modealot of things work under a differnt set of concepts...but hell...

I once challenged a NT-loving co-worker to a test: We each take a PC and a

with no computer knowledge. The test is to see which new user can be taught and
setup a PC from scratch with no previous knowledge a Webserver and DNS server.

student would use Linux and his NT 4.0. He accepted but then called the
challenge
tottally unfair when I suggested we use identical 486sx 25 MHz computers with 8
MB
of RAM. Can somebody tell me why that is unfair?

The files  in the /dev are not the actual device drivers , but the
files
 corresponding to a spesific device driver , so on my system the
/dev/hda
 is the first harddisk etc. You don't actually need everyone. If you
dont
 have a scsi disk you cant omit all the /dev/sd files. The best way to
 make these files are with the MAKEDEV script (or if you want you can
 make them manually with the mknod command ). The BootDisk-HOWTO has a
 list at the end telling which files you must have . On a really plain
 bootdisk i got away with :

Well, I've had a few problems when I installed some new sdram on my
computer, too. memtest86 didnt saw them, but i had a few wierd problems,
programs segfaulting and all.

Apparently part of the reason was that some memory access patterns can't
be reproduced with just the CPU : you may also have some other chips
accessing memory, and the problems may happen only when the different
accesses happen in some particular order. Thus, your memory will only fail
if you have, say, a disk access and a network access at the same time as a
compile.

The way I tested my bad sdram was to use this script :

mv linux linux.orig

I had one of them running on each of my disks (1 IDE with triton
busmatering, 1 SCSI). Then I compiled kernels in the background. I had
both some sig11 problems, and some differences output by the diff in the
script (btw, there was a strange pattern in these differences).

problem went away when I exchanged my sdram at the store. They said it
wasnt the reason, and that their sdram was okay, but I know this wasnt
true. I guess they must have sold my faulty sdram to some win95 user who
wont see the difference anyway - he'll just get a few more crashes than
average...

I have 2 computer connected by ethernet.
One is connected to the inernet by isdn.

What do i have to do, to get an internet connection on the other one.
(I think the one with connection should forward the packets, that come
from the other one)
I thought about gated, but I dont know, how to configure it.

sdram and linux #2

Thanks for all the replies.

I can appreciate the possibility of the hdd going bad, but
it has been operating flawlessly before and after trying to
use the sdram, but that doesn't exclude the possibility.  Tried
the old mem and both the .30 and .33 kernels this morning 
with absolutely no problems.

I don't find any specific settings for the sdram in the 
system bios and what there is of a handbook for this
generic motherboard (430vx)isn't much.  The #1 suspect, I think, 
is an  incompatibility with the m-board and, #2 would be
a bad chip.  

I'll try a different type of sdram or use it
in a win95 box. What's a few extra crashes,   
I don't use it very often, anyway.

dpkg options

The man page for dpkg says it's inaccurate and also out of date.  Is
there an updated man page somewhere?  I was just wondering if there might
be some options for the program that are not listed in the man or --help
pages.  For example, is there an option to get the long description of an
installed package (as opposed to the output of -l)?  Is there a way to list
the packages that depend on a certain installed package, and a way to list
the packages that a certain installed package depends on?  I suspect that
these options may just be undocumented.  If they don't exist, they probably
should; all this info is available in /var/lib/dpkg/status (and besides, I
think you can do these things with rpm, and I wouldn't want that tool to
out-do dpkg in any way ;-).

SCSI tape problems

Well, I spent the evening getting the Adaptec AVA-1505 card working.   I
finally got it so that the system now boots and sees the card.  This card
is supposed to be supported by the AHA152x support.

Here are the kern.log messages now (heads of each line clipped for
breavity) from when I just rebooted.  I have one 1/4 inch Teac tape drive
on ID 1 (with a tape in it):

ok.

Yes, that's the reason. All you mentioned above are just different kernel
modules. You have them all installed anyway (in /lib/modules/2.0.*/)
Names of those that you have selected are just appeared in /etc/modules
file. Check it out. You may add new lines or remove existing ones any time
without any reinstall. See what you got under /lib/modules.
The name in /etc/modules file just means that the module is loaded at
boot time. If you want to remove module, you use rmmod ... command,
to insert one just do, for example insmod vfat.

I'm afraid about PostGreeSQL because it's not 100% ANSI SQL. We'll run
third part apps that will expect to find a 100% compatible DB w/
transactions.

They recomend (obvius) Oracle 8. But it's no so cheap. And I've heard
that the version for SCO runs SLOW. SCO version can run as well on Linux
packages.

Can I substitue the MS SQL Server by PostGreeSQl without re-writing
code?

Concerning the topic I think the most important thing about the Debian
www site is its content. Besides this it should be fast-loading and easy
to use with any browser.

But I also think that a good design is a nice thing AND possible without
loosing the above attributes. Good design does not necessarily mean
frames, tons of graphics or java animations.

This should be possible at least in the proper configuration steps rather than
the extract base/kernel steps. In fact even in those, I can't, off the top of
my head remember any problem either but I am not so sure. Please try and see

Pardon my intrusion. Just wanted to say that can't remove the modules from
within the installation procedure but you can as Alex explains, just edit the
modules file. You want to edit /target/etc/modules though, which is the one 
that will be used by the system itself after rebooting.

I assume you have just one IP. Then you can use IP-Masquerade. There is
a mini-howto describing how it works and how to set it up. IIRC to get
the basics work you only have to load some modules

modprobe ip_masq_ftp
modprobe ip_masq_raudio
modprobe ip_masq_irc
modprobe ip_masq_cuseeme
modprobe ip_masq_vdoline

and adjust it like this:

ipfwadm -F -p deny
ipfwadm -F -a m -S 192.168.1.0/24 -D 0.0.0.0/0
   ^^
192.168.1.0 is the adress of the localnet. So you might have to replace
it with yours. 24 means class c network. See the howto for the values of
the other network classes if needed.

kernel version 2.0.33.  We've successfully compiled this release of Kerberos
under Slackware and RedHat Linux (Pentiums and 486's) as well under AIX and
SunOS (with gcc).

The 'make' process bombs before completion after a successful 'configure.'
The error message doesn't seem particularly edifying to me but I am happy to
forward it to any interested parties.

For those of you who don't know, I am the current webmaster for Debian.
I just heard of this thread yesterday and was going to read the debian-user
archive, but won't bother as the discussion has been moved. Future replies
will not go to debian-user so subscribe to debian-www if you are interested in
this.

I have encouraged every person who has written complaining about the site to

I have been working on getting all the mirrors set up so we can easily handle
multiple languages (will be done using content negotiation). It was originally
hoped that the pages would be translated by the release of 2.0. As that
doesn't appear likely, it would be best to make these modifications before
a major translation effort to minimize the work of the translators.

Here are some points that should be addressed/discussed:

  Should we only redesign the top page, or modify all the pages to use frames
  (in particular the left margin or top frame to ease moving around the site)?
  My feeling is to leave the other pages as is.

  There should be a place for the Debian logo (do not start a discussion on
  the quality of the logo. This will be discussed somewhere else).

  Should we use style sheets?

  Is there any point in keeping the site index? I inherited it and have (sort 
of)
  maintained it, but don't see the point.

  There needs to be space at the bottom for the logo of the site sponsor.

  After the pages are translated, there will be links at the bottom to
  access the page in specific languages. This is for those who don't set up
  the preferred_language variable in their browser.

  FYI, it has been my intention to have the actual web pages generated using m4.
  This would allow us to have a generic header and footer (for each language)
  and have time stamps be generated automatically. Modifying the header or
  footer in the past has been a royal pain as every page had to be changed by
  hand.

  Is it necessary to have both the left frame and titlebar links?

  A few specific changes:
 We go International - Debian goes International  (We doesn't work well 
here)
 Bug Tracking - Bug Tracking System

I don't remember to see dpkg having anything other than this incomplete man 
page.
BTW, dpkg --r[force-]help and dpkg-deb --help give you all the options 
available
in dpkg, may be just without enough explanations but there I go:

dpkg --status (aka -s) package
gives you the description as find in the status file, which means all of it if 
it's
installed, mostly nothing elsewhere.

dpkg --print-avail package
gives you the information set in the available files, which you can find useful 
for
not installed package. This information is set when you run the Update step in 
dselect
or by running dpkg --{merge, update}-avail Packages.gz.

Also, they're the pkg-order utilities, in frozen. They're are a little poorly 
documented
but take a look at pkg-deptree and pkg-revdep script. Deity (the next 
generation of dselect)
will be more attractive and should have some utility. But remember that Debian 
dependencies
are really more robust and more complex than the rpm style, don't expect to 
have the same
fast responsiveness as with RH.

laptop soundconf

this is the soundconf file for a Gateway Solo 2300 LS with a Yamaha
YM715 sound chipset. i am running kernel 2.0.33. btw, the card is not
configured as a soundblaster. i had the same experience as you did,
namely if i booted into windows and then linux the sound card will
work. unfortunately the card is not 100% soundblaster compatible, so
you have to configure it differently. anyway, the sound works fine for
me now, so give it a try. let me know if it works for you.

Why would you add memory and not expect your operating system to use 
it.  That would be a waste.  The Linux kernel takes your memory and 
allows various parts of your system (such as disk IO) to speed up.  

DOS doesn't do that kind of memory monitoring, and in the case of 
Microsoft (not NT), free memory is useable memory.  Because you 
memory is in cache and buffers does not mean that it will not get 
used if it is needed.

idle users...

Lately, I've noticed that when I exit xterm, it doesn't log me off..

Today is March 30th and I have idled set to kick idle users off after 120
minutes.. idled only kicked one of three 'ghost users' off, the other two
have been logged on for two days now..  How can I kick them off?  They're
not running any programs -- not even a shell.

Most AOL users aren't exactly guru material, but does that mean we
should exclude them?  Where does it end?

Latex problem in 1.3.1

  Try checking out dpkg-deb --help.  Dpkg passes some options on to
dpkg-deb and handles some itself, but dpkg-deb also has some options that
can't (I don't think) be accessed through dpkg.  For example:
   dpkg-deb --info
will give you quite a bit of information about a package, includeing
depends and a long description, although dpkg -s gives you the same.
Check it out, maybe some of the things you want are there.

once it is accessed, especially in light of the following:

uname doesn't show the up to date kernel compilation number.

I installed a custom kernel using make-kpkg + dpkg.

2) From where uname get this number (is it written in the kernel itself) ?

Build another kernl before doing a make distclean (or make-kpkg clean) and it 
shall. But either it didn't worked for me or that I didn't understand 
_exactly_ what am I suposed to do (Build another kernel using make-kpkg or 
manualy ? Build it before I run make-kpkg + dpkg --install or after that ?).
