Programación en C++
3Com-DSLsave all Saving. SAVE ALL SAVE ALL Complete Ya esta.

Lo he echo y no funciona. 3Com-DSLsave all Saving. SAVE ALL SAVE ALL Complete Ya esta.

My 2 cents. Luz Futten.

... --- Gleyson Mazioli da Silva [EMAIL PROTECTED] [EMAIL PROTECTED]

dhcpcd weirdness
I have a box that provides network services to some other computers that is running Potato. It accesses the internet via cable modem, using dhcpcd to get its IP address. The problem I'm having is that it won't work unless I run it with configuration options on the command line, although I have my settings exactly the same in the /etc/dhcpc/config file, I think. Config file: IFACE=eth0 OPTIONS='-h (hostname)' (also tried without ) /etc/network/interfaces also fails to bring it up at boot-time: iface eth0 inet dhcp hostname (hostname) syslog sez: Oct 11 00:08:36 isharagi dhcpcd[188]: timed out waiting for a valid DHCP server response It gets the address instantly if I start it as follows: isharagi:/# dhcpcd -h (hostname) Whereas just typing dhcpcd causes it to pause for a long time, as it does when it tries running it at boot time. The cable modem shows activity so it's doing something. What am I failing to configure properly? If these configurations are ok, what's doing this? It used to work so I figure I must have changed something and made it broken. TIA Andrew W.

I had used Linux for several years, but it was only after reading this book that I developed any ability with regular expressions. I need to read it again. 'Beginning Linux Programming', Matthew Stones, WROX Press. Don't let the 'beginning' in the title fool you. This book will take you far. 'The Concise Guide to XFree86 for Linux', Hsiao, Que. This book stands alone, I believe, to elucidate the secrets of XFree86 in one volume. 'The Linux Problem Solver', Ward, No Starch. I am sticking my neck out putting this in a list of 'must have' books, as no one has probably heard of it. But most books on systems administration for Linux are either a lot of words and general concepts ('Linux System Administration', Carling et al., New Riders) or primarily geared to UNIX and out of date for the fast pace of Free Software ('UNIX System Administration Handbook', Nemeth et al., Prentice Hall; 'Essential System Administration', Frisch, O'Reilly). Here is a clear and well-written book that is both concrete in its approach to solving specific, practical systems administration problems and also written by someone (Brian Ward) with a thorough understanding of what he is writing about. 'Open Sources: Voices from the Open Source Revolution', Dibona et al., editors, O'Reilly. However good you may become at Linux you are only half educated unless you are steeped in the history, traditions and lore of the Free Software movement. This book is the best introduction I know of under one cover. Other titles worth taking a look at for your reference library: 'The Complete FreeBSD', Lehey, Walnut Creek 'Maximum Linux Security', Anonymous, SAMS 'Linux Network Servers 24 Seven', Hunt, Network Press 'UNIX Shells by Example', Quigley, Prentice Hall It is informative to read book reviews of these titles on Amazon.com (and then actually buy them at bookpool.com or one of the stores at unamazon.com :)). It used to work so I figure I must have changed something and made it broken. some dhcp servers apparently need you to add -h hostname for some obscure reason (i don't know why, i just remember hearing something about that somewhere), so i suggest you check out its config man file for the equivalent. on an almost related note, i had a weird issue when i tried to use dhcp on my linux box... it'd send a dhcpdiscover, get a dhcpoffer ... and then nothing. then, one day it worked, out of the blue. *shrug* ps: you could always run tcpdump while trying to start dhcpcd, to see just wtf it's doing. -m

Promise ATA-100 (IDE) controller
Further to an earlier request about hardware Can anyone provide advice about the status of support for ATA-100 IDE controllers---more specifically, the Promise ATA-100 cards? Is there support for these in the 2.2 series kernels, or in 2.4? There seems to be some controversy about whether the ATA-100 actually delivers the faster hard drive speed that it ought to provide or claims to provide (and I've also seen claims that the ATA-66 isn't any faster than ATA-33 on most systems). Is there anyone who has experience with these cards under Debian, who could offer advice either about the quality of current support or about the claimed performance advantage? But this makes me curious: Why should it be more secure, provided that bind is configured properly? BIND can't be configured properly enough to be secure. The developers gave up on the current version, and rewrote BINDv9 from the ground up, and they still don't take security seriously (http://www.linuxsecurity.com/feature_stories/conrad_vixie-1.html). You can read up on djbdns (dnscache is part of the package) at http://cr.yp.to/djbdns.html You shouldn't worry too much about it, though, since you are on a dialup system. inetd in netbase package
Hi, Maybe my question should be sent to another list, let me know then. I know that this is a very active maillist so I'm not part of it, please send a CC to me too, if you reply to this mail. My question is why inetd is part of netbase. I would like to have a system that don't run inetd but I would like to be able to use the other commands that are part of netbase, like telnet (out from the machine), traceroute etc. The securest way to not run inetd is to not have inetd installed. But if I don't want to mess up the system by removing the actual inetd binary I have a system where inetd is installed. I thought that Debian was more security aware then i.e RedHat, but that's not true. Even RedHat has split up netbase into sevral packages. RedHat has a package called net-tools that together with the init-scripts are used to configure the network. Than you have separated packages for all services and applications like inetd, telnet and traceroute, etc. I think Debian can do the same because package dependencis should sort out the rest for the users/admins. -- _\\|//_ (-0-0-) /---ooO-(_)-Ooo--\ | Magnus SandbergEmail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] | | Network Engineer, BlueLabs AB http://www.bluelabs.se/ | | Phone: +46-8-470 2155(FAX: +46-8-470 2199)GSM: +46-708-225 805 | \/ || || ooO Ooo

Re: dhcpcd weirdness
I have no problems with [EMAIL PROTECTED] service and my DHCP service, albiet, I use the command line -h not config files. I've never had a problem at all except for when the power goes out, then I have to power cycle the cable ethernet bridge and then use dhcpcd -h hostname I just put dhcpcd -h cr-your#'s in rc.local and all is fine. Doesn't debian use pump though? some dhcp servers apparently need you to add -h hostname for some obscure reason (i don't know why, i just remember hearing something about that somewhere), so i suggest you check out its config man file for the equivalent. But he's adding one, via his config files, no? I'm using dhcpcd and the config files, and with rogers it often takes me multiple tries to finally get an IP address. Re: inetd in netbase package
Hi, Ofcause the most secure thing is to know what I do, but when you have a number of machines to manage it can be hard to make notes of every change from time to time. What happends if I remove /etc/rc2.d/S20inetd, will APT/dpkg recreate the link when I do a upgrade? When removing that link or renaming inetd it self, I start to change things in the system that I have to keep track of. If inetd was a separated package I only need to keep track of what I have installed, and I keep track of that by run the command 'dpkg -l'. I try to write documentation for all servers in the office but sometimes it is easy to forget a quick patch/fix. My feeling is that you should keep the number of fixes at a minimum. I didn't say that inetd has any bugs. Often when you start inetd you get a number of services that can have bugs or unsecure your system. Ofcause I can remove or rewrite /etc/inetd.conf. IMHO it would be good to have inetd as its own package. When you install/activate inetd you should be aware of the risks. When inetd is installed as a port of the basic/initial installation you may forget to rewrite /etc/inetd.conf. _\\|//_ (-0-0-) /---ooO-(_)-Ooo--\ | Magnus SandbergEmail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] | | Network Engineer, BlueLabs AB http://www.bluelabs.se/ | | Phone: +46-8-470 2155(FAX: +46-8-470 2199)GSM: +46-708-225 805 | \/ || || ooO Ooo - On 11th of October 2000 Julian Stoev vrote; - On Wed, Oct 11, 2000 at 02:10:58PM +0200, Magnus Sandberg wrote: |Hi, | |Maybe my question should be sent to another list, let me know then. | |I know that this is a very active maillist so I'm not part of it, please |send a CC to me too, if you reply to this mail. | |My question is why inetd is part of netbase. Re: Xvidtune
By default, the current directory is NOT one of the places that the system will look for an executable. Try giving it a complete pathname /something/somthing/Xvidtune. Or cd to the directory and enter ./Xvidtune. That specifies that the executable is in the current directory. cheers, dar On Wed, 11 Oct 2000, Cavaiani, Don wrote: Someone told me yesterday that I have lousy modelines and that I should run Xvidtune. Why do you think the asymmetric algorithms are really just wrappers around a symmetric algorithm? (Answer: because the symmetric method is faster!) My point exactly. No, how come we came to think we had different opinions on this one? The thread started by somebody asking a way to encrypt files asymmetric and Brian May stated symmetric method was faster. _Technically_ this is, of course, true. But, from the users point of view, saying gpg -e imho qualifies as using asymmetric encryption, although the data is _technically_ encrypted symmetric and only the key asymmetric. So, this in mind, I told there was no notable difference in whether you use symmetric or asymmetric encryption. Please note, that I was talking about the use of gpg - or pgp - all the time. Although it seems I should have made that more clear. My point in all this is, that when I encrypt something for myself - like when making backups - I usually use gpg -er suonpaa instead of gpg -c. Neat and simple, safe enough and as fast as gpg -c, I think. Although I have never cared enough to time it, really. (My lack of language skills... Do you have a mime-type or an application type set of PHP4? Is it the same extension? No - I'm not convinced it _should_ be .PHP4, just .PHP. Sorry, I wasn't clear. What you need is something that will tell apache what files qualify as PHP files, and what processor to use. You can have PHP3 and PHP4 running on the same Debian system, as far as I can tell (I haven't tried it), so the extensions may have been set up by default that way. My mime.types file has this in it: application/x-httpd-php phtml pht php application/x-httpd-php3php3 application/x-httpd-php3-source phps application/x-httpd-php3-preprocessed php3p It isn't clear to me that this will cause a file with just the 'php' extension to be parsed proplerly, because the apache module is called php3_module. Similarly, it isn't obvious to me that php4 would be called, either. I think you'd need to convince apache that php=php4, by adding a line application/x-httpd-php4php (and, I guess, adjusting the other line that includes php not to include that extension). I might be completely wrong about this, because I haven't played with the config too much (PHP4 was not ready when I started the project I'm using PHP3 for, and I'm in no hurry to go back and re-test everything with PHP4). Either one CPU should work well. Just pick your mobo well. What I have done in the past is look at the system specs on VA's and penguincomputing's pages and try to find out what they put in their systems. Well, I guess I _could_ use a shell script to start it, but it bothers me that it used to work yet suddenly does not. The config files sure seem to be written correctly. I have installed other packages since dhcpcd that mess with network things, such as ssh and oidentd, but I don't see how this would affect dhcpcd since it has its own config file??
