 y

 E(kde) = E(k) E(d) E(e) =
 = ASCII(287-ASCII(k)) ASCII(287-ASCII(d)) ASCII(287-ASCII(e)) =
 = ASCII(287-107) ASCII(287-100) ASCII(287-101) =
 = ASCII(180) ASCII(187) ASCII(186) =
 = ´»º

opción Store password in config file. A la vista del método de
cifrado utilizado, recomendamos encarecidamente no utilizar dicha

instalacion via red

2000-12-05 Thread Joaquin Fernandez Piqueras
Hola,
estoy intentando instalar Potato via ftp, primero he creado unos discos

init_module: Device or resource busy

no he elegido bien los modulos? o falla algo mas?

2000-12-05 Thread first last
Hola de nuevo gente. Estoy aqui intentando
universidad. Al hacer un lspci me dice que:

Ethernet controller 3com 3c905 100bTx
Medium devsel, irq 10. Master Capable. Latency=64
Min Gnt=3 max Lat=8 IO at 0x1000 [0x1001]
Bus 0, device 15, function 0

despues hago ifconf no me aparece.
He probado con no ponerle parametros con ponerle (
combinaciones multiples) options=4 options=12
debug=1 io=0x1000 io-0x1001 pero sigue sin aparecerme

ruido). Es mas, en el 2.2.17 viene el controlador? No me parece haberlo

Hola

if [ -s $1 ]; then
#
echo ** Sí existe: $1

dpkg-deb --field $1
nombreFi=`echo $1 | cut --delimiter=/ --fields=5,6,7,8,9,10`
echo Filename: $nombreFi
while read a b c d tam f g h i
do echo Size: $tam; done
(md5sum $1) | # idem
while read md5sum b
do echo MD5sum: $md5sum; done
echo
fi

Saludos.

Instalacion En Disco Rigido Para Otra Pc

2000-12-05 Thread JFreak

Reading Package List... Error!
E: Read error - Read (21 Is a directory)
problem opening
/var/state/apt/lists/_kde_dists_stable_main_binary-i386_Packages
E: The package lists or status file can not be parsed or opened
unos directorios tipo
/var/state/apt/lists/_kde_dists_stable_main_binary-i386_Packages que me

apt-get doesn't install everything

2000-12-05 Thread Johannes Zellner
Hi,

since I've upgraded to woody (about 3-4 weeks ago) apt-get
sometimes installs only part of the package. I have this
from time to time and it seems not to be related to the
package. Example: Last night I installed isdnutils, and
it didn't install the /etc/isdn/ parts. I converted then
the deb package to tgz and yes -- the tgz CONTAINED the
stuff. So it's likely not a package but a dpkg problem.
I friend of mine experienced the same.
apt-get install --reinstall doesn't help either.
Did someone experience the same ?

installation, 2.4.0-test11 kernel. The problem described below has
appeared for as long as I can remember. (Relatively early in
 Branden's phase-2 debs)

DGA display does not want to work. Whenever a program attempts to
do display the video mode changes, but only a black screen is
displayed. Everything else (sound, input etc) seems to go on, but
there's no display whatsoever. Once the program stops using dga or
terminates, display is restored. This has been observed in Wine,
snes9x, and the dga test program. No errors are reported, by the
server, nor on the standard output of the program in question. I've
attached my XF86Config-4 file, but I get the impression this isn't
going to help much, and I'll tell you why.

Between XF86 3.x and 4.x, there were some major changes in DGA. Lots of
things break with it (you left xmame off your list, too).

But there's now a patch on the xmame list for DGA2 and Matrox
(though it probably broke other things... I know Hans, the xmame
maintainer is running 3.3.6 and hasn't bothered seriously looking at the
DGA1 vs DGA2 differences.)

The summary of the patch from Shyouzou Sugitani:

| With this patch, xmame works well with DGA2.0 on my Matrox G200.
| My conclusion is that we need to call XF86DGADirectVideo() before
| XF86VidModeSwitchToMode().
|
| From README.DGA(version 2.0):
| XDGAOpenFramebuffer() should be called prior to initializing
| a dga mode if direct framebuffer access is desired for that mode.

I _can_ get DGA working if I switch to Matrox's now-over-2-month-old
driver. The only problem with this solution is that it's designed
for DRM1, so using it will kill off my currently working (and very
well i should add) GL. I also haven't been able to extract from
matrox any information on when they plan to release updated drivers.

It's not a Matrox issue per se. It's the changes in DGA.

I'm not sure of any other information to add, but if there's
something you need, ask and you shall recieve. I also cannot
confirm whether or not these symptons exhibit themselves in the
current XFree4 CVS. (I'm on a 28.8 modem, and my access to the
local T1 is sporadic). Any comment with respect to that, or
anything else, would be greatly appreciated.

Yes, you'll have similar problems with any application that calls
XF86VidModeSwitchToMode -before- XDGAOpenFramebuffer.

The remaining pcmcia messages probably come from scripts in etc/rc*.d/

If you're trying to use the distributed samba 2.0.7 on a 2.0.x kernel it

Shouldn´t samba 2.0.7 depend on a kernel = 2.2 then? This seems like a

odd that it didn't apply cleanly, i made it against a potato kerneld

upgraded about 5 times to fix the same bug recently...)

(or maybe it was because you needed -p2 the [lazy] way i made the

The source of my troubles with the modutils script might be the
fact that I tried to boot my hand-rolled kernel from another
directory than /boot (the other script I complained about,
/etc/init.d/modutils, seems to get fooled because /boot is
present, but I´m not booting from there).

i don't see why that should matter really, i know people to just drop
the kernel in / and things work properly. you do need to put the
System.map-`uname -r` in /boot or else some things may complain.

Not in the current state of my research/newbieness/whatever.

ok, ill check woody's modutils and see if this bug is still there and

i've searched and read alot of faqs and so far they're all just howtos. the
only conclusion i can come up with is with php u can use it directly with html
(plus also call it from html code) whereas with perl the only way u can use it
is to call it from your html code.

am i right with that assumption?

Uh, this depends on what you wan't to do.
One basic thing:
cgi stands foc common gateway interface. Through this interface you can start
all binarys or other programm code wich is supported by the operating system.
php has nothing to do with cgi. It's a special apache mod.

Don't know if you got it exectly. The main difference it between cgi's and php.
A cgi (could be Perl, C or whatever) prints the html code, in a php doc you
normaly put the results within the php code. Start a little bit reading in the
manual and you'll get it.

For work with databeses php is one of the best thinks in the web!

XFree86 4.0.1 packages and Potato

Is there any solution to this, apart from switching to Woody?

Yes.

If you prefer to use System Commander - which I do because I have several
Windows configurations and a debian on my PC and the different users (kids,
wife and I) have each there password for their own os - then: during install of
debian choose lilo to put the boot stuff NOT in the masterbootrecord; you
should install it in root partition of debian. Btw systemcommander should be
installed on FAT16 (systemcommander 2000 can also be installed on FAT32)

If you are not stuck on System Commander - no need for more than one password -
you can also use linux' lilo and put an extra stanza in it for your windows.

it might be limited by speed of disks, not by speed of network.

try to get some diagnostics for the network card you use (not sure if
it's available for your particular card, nor where to find it) and see
what it says about conection.

also, try some connection that is not disk related, I am not sure how
to test it, maybe huge RAM-disk, or write some simple network program,
well, two programs, one generating data (faster then 100Mbs), another
one reading data...

or open few VNCs with some graphics intensive stuff and see what you
can squeeze out of the cards...

The only way to really measure the speed of the cards (and not of hard
disk, nfs-subsystem etc) is to send _huge_ amounts of data really,
 really fast.

Personally I like netcat (it´s debianized) for that sort of stuff, just
  dd if=/dev/null | netcat 1.2.3.4
and, on the other side
  netcat -listen /dev/null
(I´m not sure about the exact synta, but it´s easy enough).

am I forgetting to set something ? I think maybe this is a too
specific question for this list (sorry), so any pointers to other

If the cards are autosensing there´s a good possibility that they
negotiated 10 mbit/s, most cards come with a DOS-driver where you can
explicitly set sppedduplex (they memorize that, so you need only do
 it once).

cheers,

multiple pages fax

2000-12-05 Thread Peter Fedichev
Hello

since recently I am using a debian computer as a fax machine (it works
really good with the mgetty packages). In the same time I am having a
number of problems which I was not able to resolve even with a
reasonable reading effort. Non of them is a death-blow, but overall they
are kind of annoying. Do any of you know:
1) how to glue a multiple paged fax into a single file (It is not fun to
print 50 pages one by one)
2) hiw to translate a multiple paged fax (.g3) into something more
reasonable--single ps or something like that.
In fact I am interested in a package which can do the job in the batch
mode.

I have been searching the net and found multiple links to the software
which is either can not be compiled on my debian box or does not seem to
be in development. The mgetty manual tells a lot how to make a g3 file
to send but nearly nothing about the inverse process. Right, there are
references how to print a file to the laser jet, but what if I want to
store my faxes in a kind of archive and want to be able to view them in
a good viwer?

Hence, the problem is to find not just a reference to a prog on the Net,
but to find a solution which actually works. Does anybody have an
working solution to share?

thanks a lot

update 2.2 - 2.2r2

2000-12-05 Thread Joerg Johannes
Hi there

Well, my computer has no internet connection itself, so I won't be able
to do apt-get dist-update. I must download all packages I need at
university, put them on Iomega ZIP's, carry them home ant install them
from the ZIP's. Now, is there a way to find out
1.) which packages have changed
2.) which I have to download (I don't need to update the ones I don't
have installed yet;-))
?

When all this is done, do I have to put them on my local harddisk in the
same directory structure as on the debian mirrors?
What will I have to add to my sources.list?

This were quite a lot of questions, I know. Is there a howto on such a
way to make an update?

thanks a lot

2000-12-05 Thread Liam Ward
Hope someone can help here...

I've been testing out Arkeia as a backup system (it's free for small
configurations - server plus two clients - now). I've got a SCSI
DLT4000 (Quantum).

I think my problem happened when a cron job tried to write to the
tape at the same time as I was playing with Arkeia. Now I get:

ns1:~ sudo mt -f /dev/nst0 status
mt: /dev/nst0: Input/output error

The machine is remote so I've tried a soft reboot but to no avail. I
don't think it's Arkeia's fault because it happened once before and a
poer down reboot did the trick. Is there any way I can clear the
fault without physically visiting the machine? I've searched the WWW
and, while there are quite a few reports of people havign similar
problems, there doesn't seem to be any workable solutions.

Thanks in advance.

Re: X4 and my Voodoo Banshee

2000-12-05 Thread Scott Patterson

I'm having a hell of a time getting this to work.

Ahhh, the painful process of learning.

I'm running a mostly-clean install of Debian. It'd be wholly clean,
except that when I set my sources to woody to get the .debs I'd like,
dselect threw in a bunch more and I wasn't inclined to argue :)

Anyways, as the subjects says, I'm trying to get X4 running _properly_
with my video card, meaning that I'd like to have proper acceleration of X
with my Banshee. I followed the instructions at debianplanet for X4 under
3dfx cards, but it balked at the libglide3 step, and when I searched the
packages under dselect I couldn't find it either.

But I have installed the proper libglide2 packages, or so it appears. As
I understand it, I now have to install the device3dfx packages for
libglide2 to run properly. I've downloaded and installed the source .deb,
to want compiled kernel sources in /usr/src/linux? I tried out the
header-package, ran debian/buildpkg, got a .deb out of that, but it
doesn't install properly.

So what's the secret? What am I supposed to do? I'm not sure exactly
_how_ I'm supposed to compile the .deb myself, so it's possible and likely
that I've done something wrong in that regards. I'm willing to compile a
kernel, if I have to. I'm willing to reinstall if that's needed.

So what am I supposed to do?

I'm no pro at this, but I did get 3D acceleration working on my Banshee, so I
know it works. Here we go...

Glad to see you followed the debainplanet tutorial. Along with cleaning out my
old XF3.3.6 stuff, I also removed most (if not all) of my glide/3d stuff. IIFC,
you need libglide3 and that's it. Libglide2 and device3dfx are for XF3.3.6.
Someone correct me if I'm wrong. I'd look at my installed packages, but, that
box is at home.

Also, you need to recompile a kernel to support DRI and tdfx. I'm running
2.4.test10. The only problem I with my setup was that my default depth for X was
set to 32. It should be 16 as that is what the Voodoo Banshee supports for 3D
acceleration. Once I changed that, I had 3d support fullscreen and in windows.

Email me if you need more help (am I asking for trouble???).

I just did this last night for the purpose of promoting debian to my gf.

To do so, they say to add
deb http://kde.tdyc.com potato main crypto optional qt1apps
 or the miror
deb http://kde.rap.ucar.edu potato main crypto optional qt1apps

to your /etc/apt/source.list---but I needed to append /debian to the URL,
and didn't use the words crypto, optional, or qa1apps (but never tried
 either).

After that, apt-get update, then I believe I did
 apt-get install kdebase konqueror konsole

 and startx startkde
after terminating xdm. The new KDE is pretty and crisp, but I really like
 wmaker.

note, this is as I recall so there may be a few tweaks or such
required...check the ftp site for filenames and directory structure.

I am told this is due to the standard gcc being more stringent in
its handling of clobbers within inline asm statements than the old
gcc (2.72).

I've seen the same thing in other packages (e.g. koules before I fixed
it ;)).

I don't want to go back to 2.72 and I understand that there is a
redhat package called kgcc which is billed as their standard
kernel compiler and it is based on egcs 1.1.2. Does Debian have
a similar package or some other recommended kernel compiler?

Try the gcc272 package. You can install it alongside the normal gcc
package, so you don't have to go back to 2.7.2 as such.

Is this a 2.2 or 2.4 kernel? For 2.2, you're best using the older gcc
(or so I'm told); for 2.4, you'd be best finding out how the patch
you're using could be fixed for the newer gcc.

This problem has come up so many times since hamm started getting used that
it almost
merits its own HOWTO. What's happened is that you've upgraded X and now you
are using
the XKEYBOARD extension. As you've noticed, the ALT key now does ALT and the
windows
key is now the META key. I've argued several times that this is a bug since
it changes
behavior. Alas no one listens to this raving madman. Where's whatcha do (as
root):

sed -e 's/Alt_L/Foo_L/' -e 's/Alt_R/Foo_R/' /usr/lib/X11/xkb/symbols/us |\
sed -e 's/Meta_L/Alt_L/' -e 's/Meta_R/Alt_R/' |\

mv /usr/lib/X11/xkb/symbols/us.new /usr/lib/X11/xkb/symbols/us

Now restart X and Things should work normally.

Read the apt-offline guide (in /usr/share/doc/apt) or look at apt-zip,

the technics described in the apt-offline guide.

Re: Voodoo 3, XFree 4.0 and DRI

2000-12-05 Thread Scott Patterson

Can anybody tell me, what I have to install / configure to have a working
GL-lib based on DRI with hardware acceleration?

 mfg
   Mischel S aus P

Go to http://www.debianplanet.org and look on the left hand side. There is a
nice tutorial on installing XF4 in Debian using a Voodoo card.

 Scott

Ok, I succeeded in installing my voodoo properly, but it is very slow
(20fps XFree4.0 DRI, 35 fps XFree3.6 dev3dfx) and applications using
GL seems to stop from time to time (for just a second or less). But games
are not playable with this. Is this a driver-related issue and can I speed
up things a little bit (20fps are ok, but those short freezes of my Quake3
are not)?

Good question...I got this from http://www.linuxgames.com.
It was the latest article I found about 3dfx and XF4. It's
dated Friday Aug 18 23:26:06 2000.

---START---
There are new XFree86 4.0.1 X Server/Mesa prereleases
for the Voodoo Banshee, Voodoo3, Voodoo4 and Voodoo5
available. These drivers should be used in conjunction
with XFree86 4.0 and Glide 3 with DRI support (provided).
These are the drivers that were used in the demonstrations
at 3dfx's Linux World Expo booth. They ran games such as
Quake3, Unreal Tournament (with OpenGL renderer), Soldier
of Fortune and others. Note these drivers will still not
work with, Myth2, Quake2 or other Glide and Mesa2x based
applications but, the the DGA mouse bug been has been
fixed. Also note, these drivers are still in early
development. At this time only a single chip on the
board is supported, that means that the board will not
run at its full speed potential, nor are Full Scene
Antialiasing (FSAA) and T-Buffer Cinematic effects
available. As development continues these features
will be implemented in the drivers.
---END---

Anyone know if they've been updated since???

debian-cd.deb for 2.2r2 ?

2000-12-05 Thread Igor Mozetic
In http://www.debian.org/releases/stable/ I read:

Building CD images

People wishing to create CD images for 2.2r2 will need to use the
CVS version of 'debian-cd' and not the version currently installed in potato.

Is there any deb around which works when one doesn't have time
to investigate CVS ?

No, not in DOS. The setting you are talking about is in the BIOS.

Um, not in this case. 3Com has a DOS utility on their site which
disables PnP mode on the card. There's supposed to be a linux

Re: Xircom PCMCIA Etherent/Modem Card

Yes. I have one. Driver support is not reliable in potato. If you
fiddle with bringing up and down interfaces and restarting pcmcia, you
can occasionally get it to work. The documentation says that support
for this card is experimental. From what I hear, the card will be much
better supported in the next major release of the pcmcia drivers.

Cheers,

Offline mail reader for several lists

2000-12-05 Thread Vince Mulhollon
I think you need to ask debian-user about the packages named uqwk and
multimail or something like that.

Having never used either I can't help, but many many years ago I used a QWK
reader to read usenet news.

Anything else that is QWK compatible under development?

I would almost be interested in a GTK based QWK reader...

AM

I use procmail to sort my incoming mail (a dozen or so mailinglists) to
different folders. To read mail from home, I ssh to the computer at work
and
read mail with mutt.

But as phone lines ar expensive here, instead of spending an hour of
online mail reading, I would like to connect, download new mails,
disconnect, read and delete most of them, then connect again and write back
eventual changes to the folders.

Is there a piece of software that allows me to do just that? It doesn't
sound like a very exotic problem so someone else might have wanted a
solution. Using imap does not count, it won't work offline,
as it makes a connection to the server for every message to be
read.

I too have a D-Link DFE530tx and I'm using the scyld driver. I'm no kernel
compile Guru, what errors did you get ?
From memory I think I had to add a -I/usr/src/linux/include to the compile
command. /usr/src/linux is where the kernel sources are on my machine.

The deb package I've used for the source is kernel-source-2.2.17 and then
unpacked the kernel-source-2.2.17.tar.bz2 file.

Dont forget to get and compile the pci-scan package from scyld also.

Hope this is of some help.

I think the driver for this card is RealTek RTL8139.

 That is defnetly wrong.
Go to the dlink website down the latest drivers for your card.
Compile them as modules like it is written in the readme.
Do not forget to uncomment the lines in /etc/modutils/via-rhine
 and in /etc/modules.conf similar to:
 options via-rhine irq=9
 add via-rhine in your /etc/modules
 reboot and have fun
I did it and it does work :)

I think that the problem is not with fetchmail: fetchmail get's you mail
from the POP server, but fails to deliver it to your local MTA
(sendmail/exim/postfix/qmail/whatever).
I had this problem before... I had to remove a smtpd package (IIRC) and
change a thing in sendmail configuration...

I know this isn't much help, but at least you know where the problem is
(if I'm right, that is :) ).

[OT] Need to sync a directory tree _to_ a WinNT ftp server

2000-12-05 Thread Peter S Galbraith
Hello,

I'm building an HTML tree on Debian potato that I need to move
over to a (gasp!) WinNT web server. The web server admin gave me
ftp access to the WinNT machine. Ideally, I want to run a script
that uses ftp to keep the files on the NT machine in sync with my
development tree on Debian (not the reserve).

Is there an rsync-like tool that uses ftp only? (I couldn't find
an rsync server for NT).

Thanks,

 Shouldn?t samba 2.0.7 depend on a kernel = 2.2 then? This seems like a

 then).

IMO that would break when you don't havea 2.2 kernel package installed and
do everything the old fasioned way :)

But you really should ask the samba package maintainer that question.
