for all newly-created databases in the absence of a specific encoding

Me

Yo he realizado la

2001-01-30 Thread Andres Seco Hernandez

deb http://ftp.eq.uc.pt/software/unix/Linux/debian-kde potato crypto main
optional qt1apps

Y ahora hago apt-get install avifile y solo monta avifile, libqt2.2-mt,
libmng y libsdl1.1.

Esto es lo que quería. Gracias.

Dos monitores con Debian 2.1

2001-01-30 Thread Ramiro Alba

I para Linux ?. He buscado por la web de sun y
openoffice.org, pero no he encontrado nada.
a linux.

Gracias.

On Tue, 30 Jan 2001, Jaime E . Villate wrote:

Yo he realizado la

Faltaba descubrir
¿O será que has usado

a mi.

He realizado una instalación nueva de potato y he ido

linux... Y lógicamente, no me hace ninguna gracia meterle windoze chungo pa

He intentado instalar netscape con apt-get

iU communicator-b 4.75-2 Communicator base support for version 4.75
iU communicator-s 4.75-2 Netscape Communicator 4.75 (static Motif)

Si hago dpkg -l | grep netscape, me sale lo siguiente:

iU netscape-base- 4.75-2 4.75 base support for netscape

as minidistros...

Derivadas do Debian (Corel, Stormix, Progeny ...)

Linux e GNU libc, seguindo o FHS.

e levantar o Medo a Incerteza e a Dúvida (FUD).

 empresa brasileira Conectiva.

A esta altura, cabe a pergunta: aonde vai levar tamanha dispersão? Quem ganha
 e

Oh yeah, the above commands work as aspected when I put in another drive
(Mitsumi FX400), so it's not something onboard.

Can you read from the CDR from another OS? Can you swap the drive to a
different system? Have you checked all cables carefully? I mention the
last because I had a dead CDR (though it wasn't registering on boot
either) which turned out to have a disconnected IDE cable

Hardware troubleshooting is a process of elimination -- work out what
the problem *isn't*, you're left with what it likely is.

Re: Broken reverse DNS - after recent bind upgrade?

2001-01-30 Thread Robert Waldner
Bind upgrade to 8.2.3 also breaks some other things...namely it´s not as
tolerant to sloppy configs like it´s predecessors.

From one of my colleagues (anonymized, was on an internal mailing-list):

Seems to me that someone in Nominum/ISC finally chained himself to the
chair and rewrite the syntax parser from scratch. Now syntax checks are
stricter and zones are rejected due to things that didn't even produce a
warning in the previous versions.

One example is when people, trying to keep things in a good looking
fashion, use the syntax like:

@ SOA ns.XXX.net. hostmaster.XXX.net.
(
2000101000
...
)

instead of (standardly recommended):

@ SOA ns.XXX.net. hostmaster.XXX.net. (
2000101000
...
)

Strictly speaking, the first way of writing is wrong: the brackets are
used to tell the server process to treat the next line as continuation
of the previous one. Following that recommendation, the latter form is
right - the open bracket should be in the first row.

We are not the only ones affected by this change in 8.2.3: many people
complained on the BIND mailing list last few days. Nominum statement
about those complaints are: Please, follow the standards and don't
bother us with stupid questions.

JIC somebody besides me has gotten himself in there :/

cheers,
rw

Host lookup for different apps...

2001-01-30 Thread Paul D. Smith
I'm seeing a very weird thing on my Linux box (Debian testing, but not
the latest). I'm wondering if anyone has any insight.

So, I have a local hosts file with a few hosts in it. I also have NIS,
with a whole _boatload_ of hosts in it (8782, to be precise). And, I
have DNS nameservers.

My /etc/host.conf file says:

  order hosts,bind
  multi off

My /etc/nsswitch.conf file says:

  hosts: files dns

and my /etc/resolv.conf file says:

  search one.domain.com two.domain.com three.domain.com four.domain.com
  nameserver xx.yy.zz.qq
  nameserver ss.tt.uu.vv

Suppose I have a host which is in my /etc/hosts, and in NIS and DNS.
If I use nslookup on this host, it is found on my first nameserver, as
myhost.one.domain.com. I cal also use nslookup on the IP address and
get back the right value.

If I write a tiny program which invokes gethostbyname() on my hostname,
and I use strace on it, I see that it obeys the settings in host.conf,
gets the value from /etc/hosts, and never tries to contact my DNS
servers. Ditto for programs like rsh and rlogin.

_However_, if I try to use telnet or ssh it _doesn't_ stop at
/etc/hosts, but rather continues and tries to look up the hostname in
DNS. Strace shows this definitively.

I see an open of /etc/hosts, then a read of the contents, then a close.
Then it loads libresolv.so.2, then I see a connect to the first
nameserver entry, and a send() whose argument includes the first domain
on the resolv.conf search path. Then I see a recvfrom(), that returns
an OK value (0). Then I see another connect to the same server, and a
send of the host plus the second domain on the search path. This also
succeeds. Then it appears to try to do it couple of times more, but
doesn't ask about the other two domains in the search path.

Now that is weird enough, but it gets more strange: there are _some_
hosts where it doesn't stop at the second domain, but instead also tries
the third and fourth. Now, these domains don't know about this host, so
they fail. The poll waiting for a result from the send() request takes
4 seconds to return (strace -r shows an elapsed time of 3.921295s).
Then it tries the fourth, with similar results. Then it looks like it
just tries the hostname by itself. All fail, but not before waiting 4+
seconds.

This latter behavior is what started me investigating: in order to
telnet or ssh to these particular hosts I have to wait 15-20 seconds,
just sitting there, before I get a prompt. With other hosts its
essentially instantaneous. And, I can't come up with any differences in
the way these hosts are configured; adding them or not to /etc/hosts
makes no difference, and they're equally available in my DNS server.

I'm stumped!

BTW, I should point out that I have some Solaris boxes whose telnet and
OpenSSH don't have this delay to any hosts...

use mirrors that are shortest hops from you (try traceroute

  frequently do

  apt-get update

  and then

  apt-get upgrade

to make sure the packages you've got installed are kept sparkly

and that works for me. You may also want to change the Delay=20 line to
something more than 2 seconds, as its easy to miss that window if you

Assuming that you are running the kernel as installed from Potato cd's
you need to create an /etc/modutils/sndconfig file that contains:

alias sound-slot-0 es1371
options sound dmabuf=1
alias midi opl3
options opl3 io=0x388
options sb io=0x220 irq=5 dma=1 mpu_io=0x330

Then run 'update-modules' which should fix /etc/modules.conf painlessly.
Sound should then work.

Actually if you have the program sndconfig (I think only in Woody and Sid)
that is supposed to do all this for you but it never has worked for me up to
yesterdays upgrades to both of them. Thats not true of the Mandrake 7
version.

You may have to do a kernel recompile if it is not the standard issue but as
i recall it has all the modules in creation already set.

Not obvious at all. The RSA patent expired last September, and there is
no restriction to using RSA in OpenSSH (or anywhere else, for that
matter). OpenSSH does support RSA (or rather, it will if your OpenSSL
library has support for RSA built in, since OpenSSH uses OpenSSL for
this).

Hmm, I tried building both openssl and openssh from source, having
rsaref installed, and AFAICT (I´m not a programmer, only a lowly

openssh. But I still can´t find any rsa or similar cipher. But it´s
quite possible that I bang my head against the wrong walls.

I´ve put the compilation logs on http://www.waldner.priv.at/ssh/ to

I´d be most grateful shy grin

 I've been using Debian for
years, but its jed setup is,
to say the least, rather misguided. For some
 obscure reason, the files
that make up the standard jed tar ball are
 spread in Debian over several
 deb packages.

Which ones? I recall there being two or three - jed itself, plus the
s-lang library and (something else?). It makes sense to have s-lang
separate, because it is also used with a number of other bits of
John's fine software (slrn, for example).

More curious still is the complex
 set of config files it
 sees fit to set up.

Huh? Mine worked 'out of the box'! JED and XJED do have complex config
files, its what makes them so flexible. Having said that, the package
does a good job of setting up so that you can use it quickly (to edit
the config files, maybe :-)

It makes a great case in favor of compiling
 one's own.

There's always a case for that.

no :) ...but you can be like me and have a linux box that does:

ftp server
ssh server
irc client(screened)
firewall
NAT server(not to be confused with firewall)
DNS server(actually 3 of them, each doing different things)
NFS server
proxy server(squid+adzapper)
imap server
pop3 server
smtp server(+antivirus scanning)
game server(unreal tournament)
web server
network monitoring server(NOCOL)
vpn client
the occasional X windows session but i don't usually have X
loaded at all times on this box.

thats one of the things i love about linux...is having dozens of things
going at the same time. the above machine runs on a k6-3 400 256MB ram.
unlike certain other systems linux(in my experience) does not suffer
when you add more services on it. an example of a system that does
suffer
which i experienced first hand over the weekend was a sun ultra 10
running
solaris 7, puked hard because too many things were running on the box,
the machine wasn't even 6 months old(of the 6 months only 4 were
production)
and it died a horrid death(the root drive anyways) on saturday.

linux rules for multipurpose servers. of course it depends on your load,
the average DNS/WWW/POP server should be able to run off a slow 586
without problems. up until about a year ago i ran an isp off a p100
96megs which did pop3/smtp/www/dns/ftp/ssh/irc/etc. ran great ..

all the tagged messages, leave as you found things.

After that please gzip or bzip2 that 'mboxforjohn' to me. =) I
appreciate the help.

 changelog at

 http://dickey.his.com/xterm/xterm.log.html

(though that's probably more than you want to know :)

xterm -version says that I have: XFree86 3.3.6(88c). I can't find
this one on http://dickey.his.com/xterm/xterm.log.html

Maybe I should install a new version. Anyway I figure it out that
I have a version with a older documentation.

Also, if you are not afraid of reading the source, have a look at
the file charclass.c from the source distribution...

I don't know C. I know fortran and I knew pascal. I could figure it
out that line 86 from charclass.c:
SetCharacterClassRange(160, 191, -1);
is responsable for my trouble.

Thank you again for your help.

I just compiled it into the kernel (no modules) and it worked out of
the box. In fact, it was so easy I didn't believe it was working at
first!

Have a look at dmesg; you should see something like:

es1371: version v0.27 time 18:24:00 Jan 17 2001
es1371: found chip, vendor id 0x1274 device id 0x5880 revision 0x02
PCI: Found IRQ 10 for device 00:0a.0
es1371: found es1371 rev 2 at io 0xe800 irq 10
es1371: features: joystick 0x0

If this is there your card was recognized at boot and it should be
working.

how to get a list of updated packages after apt-get update

2001-01-30 Thread Nico De Ranter
Howdy,

how can I check which packages are new after doing a apt-get update?
I don't want to upgrade all packages I just want to know whether a
certain number of packages can be upgraded. I don't want to run dselect
either since this will starting selecting lots of stuff automaticaly
and I will end up with a big mess afterwards too.
Where does apt-get keep track of the packages after a apt-get update?

2001-01-30 Thread Liam Ward
Nico,

Just do:

apt-get -s upgrade

will show you which packages _would_ be upgraded (-s means don't
actually do the upgrade, just tell me what would happen).

The only thing you're missing is any updated packages that you
haven't got installed (but then you probably don't care about these).

I also think it would be nice if you could tell why a package wants
to be upgraded...

Read the documentation in the root directory of boot-floppies

Debian potato KDE

2001-01-30 Thread Vittorio De Martino
While I've being working with RedHat 7 for 8 months I'm an absolute beginner
with Debian 2.2r2 potato which I'd like to install first on a spare PC just
to have a go at it and then to substitute Debian for RH7 on my PC's in view
of its well known stability and real open source nature (II'm just waiting
for the CD's that I've bought as your site suggests).
Being in love with the KDE desktop I wrote the following message to the KDE
people of www.kde.org and got the following answer.
My question is as simple as that: where can I download KDE files for Debian
potato or what should I do step by step to have it on my PC?
Thanks and ciao

The Debian people did not want to make KDE packages so far. I don't know
exactly why that is, but it might be because they receive financial
contributions from our competitor, the gnome project. We do not make
binary
packages ourselves (for no distribution), that's up to the distributors.

The best thing you can do is to build and upload Debian packages yourself,
the second best thing is to bugger the Debian people to include KDE.

You mention that dist-upgrade will attempt to upgrade the most
important packages. Who decides if they're important ?? Or, is it
stored somewhere from when you first installed Debian that you did
 install A or install B ??

Priority: important lines in the Packages file.

For who decides, see the Debian Policy Manual in
