 Salut,

Cordialement,

grub2 et raid

2010-09-06 Thread Erwan David

2010-09-06 Thread hugues larrive
Bonjour,

LAUNCH_AT_STARTUP=true ?

5- exécuter chown -R mldonkey:mldonkey /var/log/mldonkey/ (bug 593091 :

me conseillais.

Seulement certains :

.816 Mo /root $ ls -l /var/lib/mldonkey/ |grep 6 sept
-rw-r--r-- 1 mldonkey mldonkey 33847 6 sept.

librerias como libGL.so.96.43.14 con enlace simbolicos libGL.so.1
borrado manualmente y después he instalado el paquete

Fiz as configurações do iproute e tudo certo.

# -- ACL Balanceamento Link --
acl ips_link1 src /srv/squid/EmbVBL
tcp_outgoing_address 189.3.9.14 ips_link1
acl ips_link2 src /srv/squid/EmbPME
tcp_outgoing_address 192.168.1.2 ips_link2

Aguardo...

Yes, it is called compose :-)

If you are using GNOME, you're in luck:

Currency sign → ¤

In GNOME, you can get it by pressing Ctrl+Shift+u and release the keys.
You'll get an underline u. Then you have to type the desired characters

How can I create a FAT32 or NTFS FS

2010-09-06 Thread Merciadri Luca
Hi,

I sometimes use gparted to make a filesystem in an easier way than using
CLI. The fact is that gparted appears, to me, as a frontend for CLI
commands. I want to format an USB key, and change the filesystem to
fat32, or ntfs. It is currently under ext3. I unmount it, delete the FS,
and manage to create a new partition. But `fat32' and `ntfs' are
impossible choices when creating the new FS. (They are deactivated.)

Why?

Thanks.

You are probably missing the packages dosfstools and ntfsprogs. They are
both 'Suggested' by gparted, but not 'Recommended' because most
GNU/Linux users should not need them.

2010-09-06 Thread Bonno Bloksma

Hi Bob,

Short answer:

Remove the file and reboot. If missing it will be created based upon
the current situation at boot time.

By accident found out that is indeed how it works. I had deleted te old file bacuse it created more
problems then it solved. ;-) After a reboot the file was indeed regererated.

fat32, or ntfs. It is currently under ext3. I unmount it, delete the FS,
and manage to create a new partition. But `fat32' and `ntfs' are
impossible choices when creating the new FS. (They are deactivated.)

 Why?

You are probably missing the packages dosfstools and ntfsprogs. They are
both 'Suggested' by gparted, but not 'Recommended' because most
GNU/Linux users should not need them.

Exactly. It installs, among others, mkntfs. Well, I don't fiddle anymore

obviously, he's not a GNU/linux user.

bashrc, bash_profile, /etc/skel/ - Debian Squeeze

2010-09-06 Thread Csanyi Pal
Hi,

I was tried Gentoo Linux system but after a while I come back to Debian
GNU/Linux system again on my PC Box.

So, in my /home/csanyipal/ directory there remain some dot files from
Gentoo system, eg.: .bashrc, .bash_profile.

When I installed 64bit Debian GNU/Linux Squeeze, I used my $HOME
directory with it's dot files too.

So, I think the .bashrc and .bash_profile remain in the state in which
was on Gentoo.

Now I have the empty /etc/skel/ directory!

I try to reinstall bash, but still get not in my $HOME directory the
debianized .bashrc and .bash_profile, and still the /etc/skel/
directory is empty. What should I reinstall to get the default
/etc/skel/ directory?

When 'ls' on my bash prompt, I get not colorized output too.

How can I get the default BASH shell, with default .bashrc and
.bash_profile again, and why is the /etc/skel/ directory empty?

Any advices will be appreciated!

[OT] permissions on samba share

2010-09-06 Thread Johannes Wiedersich
Dear all!

I have some problem with permissions of files saved from a windows XP to
a samba share. Some files from a proprietary software are saved with
permissions

-rwxrw 1 johannes tandem 4686 2010-09-06 11:24 BCK2000.DAT

other data from the same software are saved with permissions

-rw--w 1 tandem tandem 5870 2010-09-06 11:01 das-A040g-90deg-20VV.DAT

I would ideally save all files with permissions -rw-rw.

The directories of the files have the permissions

drwxrws--- 2 johannes tandem 4096 2010-09-03 09:09 backup/
drwxrws--- 4 johannes tandem 69632 2010-09-06 11:03 pmma-film/

Is there any way that I am missing to force all files stored from that
'guest OS' to have -rw-rw ?

Thanks for help!

Cheers, Johannes

You need to be more specific in your question. Seen is such a
terrible word in a technical sense. For me that would mean that the
kernel's usb module detected it and logged it to /var/log/syslog.
Please look at the activity in /var/log/syslog and report what is
happening when you insert or remove the usb device.

You're right. Seen is a terrible 'technical' word. I should have said
'no drive icon appears as it does when I install a 32g memory stick'.

But I imagine that you are using a GNOME desktop environment (or a KDE
desktop environment) and no icon is appearing on your desktop after
plugging it in? Is that what is happening for you? Unfortunately
with those it all depends upon what packages you have installed.
(Personally I despise those types of happy extras and disable them
on my machine so I won't be much help for you but at least it will
identify the problem.) It doesn't mean that your machine isn't
seeing the usb device.

Do you have gnome-mount installed?

  $ dpkg -l gnome-mount

This is what shows up when I 'dpkg -l gnome-mount'. It looks like it is
installed. Whether that is the latest version or not -- haven't check
that out yet.

I own a switch (actually, it is a roommate's) that operates at layers 2 and 3,

Re: Emergence: recover deleted files

On Mon, 06 Sep 2010, Rodolfo Medina wrote:

To avoid that risk, would it be all right, from within hda6, just cd to hda8
and there perform writes?

It doesn't really matter from where you run the program, only where it
writes to. And you must only write to another disk.

That said, it is better if you unmount the partition with deleted
files, or at least remount it read-only. If it is busy, stop the
processes that have open files in it (see lsof and fuser programs).
While it may cause writes to the system, it's better that simply pull
the power cord and risk file system corruption. And if programs are
running, they might be writing files.

If it's the root partition, you'll need to reboot in another system,
either from a CD (easiest way) or another system in your HD, if you
have one.

Excuse so many questions, but the issue is a major one.

If it's major, why so much resistance in following the advice that has
been given?

First, it seems you haven't yet unmounted the partition where files
were deleted, even after some 24 hours of the problem. That should
have been the first thing to do.

The easiest way to do that is turn off the system. (While not strictly
necessary - the important bit is to unmount the partition with deleted
files, since you'll be doing a reboot, it doesn't matter.) Download
and burn a live CD, if necessary using another computer. If it already
has the recovery program, it is easier, if not, select one that allows
installing new packages from the live system (Ubuntu does, packages go
in RAM filesystem.) Run the recovery program from the live CD on the
partition. It may be that the program requires the partition to be
unmounted, if not, and you must mount it, mount it as read-only. Let
it run, and store the results somewhere else - another partition,
another drive, pen drive, in another computer (via network, etc.)

Re: .xsession kills X server with sqeeze/fluxbox

2010-09-06 Thread brownh
Javier Vasquez j.e.vasque...@gmail.com writes:

It sounds to me it's not a ~/.xsession issue. Have you tried just
loading X without window manager at all, to see if it dies? If so it
might be a xorg.conf problem or some other configuration...

Something just occured to me. Please excuse a bit of senility and the
distraction of other pressing work, but I now believe I recall
having initially created an .xsession file and putting into it these
statements:

xset s 3600
xset -dpms

When I found the time too short, I added a 0, and it did take longer
to blank, but then seemed to revert to a shorter time by itself. So,
if my memory serves, the .xsession file didn't initially kill the
xserver, but my fidding with xset statements may have done
damange. When I lost the X sessions altogether, I removed those
lines. I now try to restore them in .xsession, but it doesn't help.

Going back to elaborate the initial scenario, when I first installed
squeeze, I de-selected the Graphical Desktop Environment bundle of
packages, for I startx from command line and never install a graphical
desktop environment such as KDE. Then, After some preliminaries, I
installed xorg and tested it by doing $ startx, and got the expected
graphical mode (blank screen with graphical prompt (?) in UL corner).

I then installed fluxbox, and much to my surprise, it was started
automatically by the X server call. That is, for years I've started
the window manager by putting a statement in .xsession such as:

exec fluxbox || exec xterm -fg red

So I no longer know how fluxbox gets called and how to stop it to
carry out your test. I looked into /etc/X11/ and off-hand couldn't
find a call for fluxbox, although there's a fluxbox directory to
define its default behavior. So I no longer know how to stop fluxbox
except by terminating its process, which will do me no good because
fluxbox is recalled when I start the X server.

I did check root account behavior: I logged in as root and for first
time started X for it. I found again that fluxbox starts automatically
when I startx. I created an empty .xsession file, and when that file
exists, the X server gives up the ghost without any suicide note. That
is, each time I try to start X and it fails because of the presence of
the .xsession file, it only shows up in .xsession-errors as:

Xsession: X session started for ...

However, there nothing like:

  $ ps aux | grep X
  brownh 3928 0.0 0.0 2864 808 tty1 S+ Sep02 0:00 xinit
 /etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc -- /etc/X11/xinit/xserverrc :0 -auth
 /tmp/serverauth.bkLgHxoJbD

so apparently the server is not running despite what Xsession says.

There's nothing relevant in user.log or syslog. I did an call trace:

  $ strace -o xsession-trace startx

The enormous result was beyond my ken, but for whatever its worth, it
ends like this:

  ...
  stat64(/bin/rm, ...) = 0
  clone(child_stack=0 ...) = 3303
  wait4(-1 ...) = 3303
  exit_group(0) = ?

Ps-aux does not say there's any process 3303 still running.

The end. In linux, log messages are generally appended to the ends of

'tail -F /var/log/syslog'

This will print the new lines to the screen as they are added to the

whatever, and note what gets added.

I switch to a text console with, say, Ctrl+Alt+F1, then if I attempt to
switch back to X with Alt+F7, I see a black screen. But if I use Alt+F8
instead, I get back to X. Multiple restarts can force the use of higher
 numbered vts.

YES! that's *exactly* the symptom that I'm experiencing.

I have to jump through some hoops to get the X server back
on vt 7. I usually just reboot because it's easier, but it is possible
 to do it without rebooting.

I don't mind jumping through some hoops to get the X to start at VT 7. I
want to avoid rebooting as much as possible. How were you able to do that?

I run GNOME, so this technique may not work for you or may need to be
adapted. But here's what I do:

(1) I click on System - Logout from the GNOME action bar. The logout
completes, and the gdm daemon restarts, but not necessarily on vt7.

(2) I switch to text console number 1 via Ctrl+Alt+F1, then attempt to
switch back to X via Alt+F7. If I see a black screen, I know it restarted
on the wrong vt. I don't know which one yet, but I know it's not vt7.

(3) If I get a black screen in step 2, I switch back to text console number
1 via Alt+F1. (Note: the Ctrl key is not needed here, since X is not
running on vt7!)

(4) On text console number 1, I login as root. I find the
console-kit-daemon process via

   ps aux|grep console-kit-daemon

Sample output looks something like this:

   smp3:~# ps aux|grep console-kit-daemon
   root 1609 0.0 0.6 17424 3116 ?Sl Sep05 0:00
/usr/sbin/console-kit-daemon --no-daemon
   root 4274 0.0 0.1 3796 780 pts/0S+ 09:51 0:00 grep
console-kit-daemon
   smp3:~#

I obtain the process id from the output of the above command, in this case 1609,
and use it in the kill command:

   kill 1609

I can then deallocate vt 7 with

   deallocvt 7

I find that the deallocvt 7 command fails unless I kill console-kit-daemon
first. I also find which vt gdm started on via

   ps aux|grep gdm

Typical output might look something like this:

   smp3:~# ps aux|grep gdm
   root 1080 0.0 0.4 16100 2072 ?Ss Sep05 0:00
/usr/sbin/gdm
   root 1087 0.0 0.6 16412 3252 ?SSep05 0:10
/usr/sbin/gdm
   root 1094 0.7 6.6 41044 34180 tty7 Ss+ Sep05 10:40 /usr/bin/X
:0 -audit 0 -auth /var/lib/gdm/:0.Xauth -nolisten tcp vt8
   root 4294 0.0 0.1 3796 780 pts/0S+ 10:03 0:00 grep gdm
   smp3:~#

The above output shows it started on vt 8. I keep that in mind for later.
Then I restart gdm with

   /etc/init.d/gdm restart

The X server restarts on vt 7. When the restart occurs, the active vt
automatically
switches to vt 7 and I see the gdm login screen. I switch back to text console
number 1 with Ctrl+Alt+F1, and repeat the process of finding and killing the
console-kit-daemon process and deallocating vt 8 (or whatever vt it was on
before).
I then logout of my root session on vt 1.

I then switch back to vt 7 via Alt+F7 and login. Note: it is important not to
switch back to X between killing console-kit-daemon and deallocating the vt.
For this procedure I owe someone else on this list who helped me months ago,
but I don't remember who it was. But thanks again to you, sir, though I don't
remember your name.

This is clearly a bug. I shouldn't have to do this. The question is, against
what Debian package do I report the bug? My first thought was against
xserver-xorg-video-nv, but I have seen these symptoms (though less often) with
other video drivers, such as intel. Perhaps console-kit is the right package,
since it owns the executable whose process must be killed in order to
deallocate the vt.

If this process, or an adaptation thereof, works for you, you may be able
to circumvent it by issuing (as root)

   mv /usr/sbin/console-kit-daemon /usr/sbin/console-kit-daemon.disabled
   killall console-kit-daemon

But I don't know what other ramifications this might have; so I can't
recommend it at this time.

That's because of:

/etc/X11/Xsession.d/50x11-common_determine-startup
/etc/alternatives/x-window-manager
/usr/bin/x-window-manager

When you have no other window manager than fluxbox, then your
alternative by default is fluxbox, then that's called for you. When
you control things by using ~/.xinitrc (for me ~/.xsession is just a
link to ~/.xinitrc, but then ~/.xinitrc needs execute permissions),
then the alternative doesn't matter, it's what you put in there what
gets executed by startx, or in the case of ~/.xsession, by the session
manager (xdm/gdm/kdm/wdm/...).

 I looked into /etc/X11/ and off-hand couldn't

I don't know what you're trying to attempt. Again, if you use startx,

I you used a session manager (like xdm), and you have ~/.xession then
it's what's there in ~/.xsession what gets called. That's why I don't
have 2 configuration files, I just have ~/.xinitrc and then ~/.xession
is just a link to it, but that implies giving execute permissions to
~/.xinitrc.

Beyond that, you fluxbox menu have entries to exit fluxbox (kill it),
load different window managers, reload it, etc...

I did check root account behavior: I logged in as root and for first
time started X for it. I found again that fluxbox starts automatically
when I startx. I created an empty .xsession file, and when that file

Can you try the following? As you already have ~/.xsession, make sure
it has execute permissions. Then make a link to it naming such link
~/.xinitrc. Once you have that, if it's empty, then I would expect X
to just die, since there's NO window manager specified. At the end of
~/.xsession, you now need to specify the window manger you want to
run. In my case startfluxbox, you could call fluxbox directly as
well, or any other thing such as startkde, gnome-session, or any other
thing...

In absence of ~/.xsession, you'll get the alternative when calling a
session manager such xdm, and in presence of ~/.xsession then the
session manger will pay attention to ~/.xsession (they do not pay
attention to ~/.xinitrc), and if you use instead startx, it pays
attention to ~/.xinitrc. If you don't include a window manger or
desktop manager in your ~/.xinitrc or ~/.xession, and you're meant to
use it, then X will just die...

type 0164 and on release the alt key, I get the CURRENCY SIGN in the

Is there a ditto input method in Debian Gnu/Linux system? Somebody help.

 Thanks in advance.

Currency sign may be done just by simple compose with binary code trick.

But if you wish to type any indic fancy text, I recommend you to look
into ibus or SCIM tool chain which provide GUI input method.

Can you try the following? As you already have ~/.xsession, make
sure it has execute permissions. Then make a link to it naming such
link ~/.xinitrc. Once you have that, if it's empty, then I would
expect X to just die, since there's NO window manager specified.
At the end of ~/.xsession, you now need to specify the window manger
you want to run. In my case startfluxbox, you could call fluxbox
directly as well, or any other thing such as startkde,
 gnome-session, or any other thing...

Yes, now fluxbox starts OK with the .xsession file command.

In retrospect, it all makes sense. Startx looks for .xsession, and
finding it executes the window manager specified in it, but not
finding the file executes the default window manager. However, if
there is an .xsession file, but without any exec windowmanager
statement at its end, the X server falls through the cracks. I had
assumed it looked for a statement in the file, not for the file itself

I now removed the executable permissions from .xsession, killed the
symlink, and it still works. I'm not clear why you asked me to take
these two steps unless it merely served to cover other possibilities
for the test.

Looks like I'm now all set.

Thanks!

I'm looking for one of those too.  I will probably go with the QNAP TS-219P
because of its relatively small size and low power consumption which is 5W

specified at 36.3 dB in operation.

The only NAS (I know of) without a fan is also from QNAP but IIRC it's
a single drive (TS-119).

There was a thread on Debian-ARM about
installation so it will run Debian.  I was impressed with the number of
features that the QNAP products had.  It comes with embedded Linux and is
expandable with their QPKG Software Package Platform.  I haven't owned a
QNAP product before.  Any comments from those of you that do?

I also never owned a QNAP box, but I do own a ReadyNas Duo which has
been giving me some trouble. (BTW, actual owners of QNAP gear: I am
also waiting to hear from you!)

The ReadyNas Duo (and AFAIK all ReadyNas'es) run a modified version of
Debian, so you could just run apt-get but you can't just install
regular Debian on them (at least not in the Sparc based Duo). In
practice it means I have a machine with dead software support. The
Debian version on my ReadyNas is Sarge so being able to install
Debian directly is indeed a major selling point for me as well.

Before I had the ReadyNas I wanted a NAS with wake-on-lan (which
neither my ReadyNas nor the QNAP TS-219P have). But I found that using
scheduled power on/off is sufficient for my needs.

Kind regards,

Quoting from http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Network_switch,
Switches may operate at one or more OSI layers, including
physical,
data link, network, or transport (i.e., end-to-end).

Lots of terminology confusion. It used to be hubs were at level 1,
switches at level 2, routers at level 3 and gateways above level 3.
Larry

That's not quite true; it's never been that clear cut, although some
would
like to believe that.

Hubs are dumb devices, almost always implemented entirely in
hardware, and
as such basically ignored everything above layer 1. Mostly they
should be
avoided for TCP/IP over Ethernet, since they generate more traffic
then
required by Ethernet (which is layer 1 and 2). In hubs, the most
complex IC
would not be complex enough to call a CPU in modern times.

Switches are smart devices, but not traditionally programmable.
They do use
some RAM to store information about seen packets in order to make
decisions
about future packets. They do not use out-of-band information to
make
switching decisions. With TCP/IP over Ethernet, they generally
operate at
layer 2 (Ethernet, which is also layer 1) or 3. Switches that do
understand a
layer above 2 will generally fall back to layer 2 when encountering
a higher
layer protocol they do not recognize. Switches generally have a
CPU, for
handling the configuration interface, which might be extensive, even
on layer
2 switches, given all the parts of the Ethernet protocol. However,
the
hardware is designed so that packets do not have to travel through
the CPU
bus.

Routers are programmable devices. They have detailed configurations
plus
static routes and routing rules. In addition, they generally use
out-of-band
information (like BGP etc.) to update their routes and rules in
near-real-
time. They likely drop data that doesn't correspond to a layer 3
protocol
they understand, but could be configured to route it somewhere.
They will
inspect layer 4 and possibly above data to aid their layer 3
routing. They
will certainly have a CPU, but they also have switch-like hardware
so that
packets do not have to travel through the CPU bus. Even packets
that need to
travel to the CPU for special processing may be routed but also
saved so that
traffic doesn't have to wait on the CPU; alternatively there may be
specialized processors have more bandwidth then the CPU but much
more limited
functionality.

A PC can pretend to be a router, switch, or even a hub. However,
unless it
has some fairly specialized hardware, high load will reveal the PC.
The main
cause of this is saturation of the bus between the network card and
the CPU,
since all the packets have to flow to the CPU and back.

Gateway is a much more generic term, but basically it connects your
network
with an outside network (or the Internet). It will generally have
at least
minimal routing capabilities, but it may simply be an intermediary,
linking a
single switch/router to a single other gateway. However, it may
also be a
feature-complete router and firewall along with doing layer 5-7
inspection to
enforce network policy. For most personal and small business needs,
it can
simply be a PC; the traffic to outside networks being too
constrained to need
more bandwidth then is available across a modern PC bus, especially
if all
that bandwidth is through a single connection to a single ISP at any
one time.
Once external traffic reaches some level though, you'll need
specialized
hardware, so your gateway will likely be an enterprise router.

The specialized hardware that routers need, basically a
programmable version
of the hardware in a switch, was/is one of the main roadblocks on
the way to a
optical-only Internet backbone. For the longest time, even when the
links
where optical cable, the routers where traditional electronic
devices, so that
the signal had to be decoded/encoded from optical to electric to
optical which
can introduce unnecessary delays.

TL;DR: That's an over-simplification or a case of nostalgia.

Lots of terminology confusion. It used to be hubs were at level 1,

TL;DR: That's an over-simplification or a case of nostalgia.

I'm not disagreeing with you in practice but many years ago these

I love to see an actual ISO or ITU document that provides a normative
definition of the any of those terms. Since you are claiming such a document
exists, perhaps you could provide a URL, ISBN, or other reference?

Latest Lenny update: What new hardware is supported?

2010-09-06 Thread twixt

I'm specifically interested in whether the Verizon USB 760 broadband
wireless modem is now supported, but in general, when the kernel image is
upgraded, where can I find a list of the new hardware inclusions without
asking anyone to lead me by the hand?

I tried linuxhardware.org
but apparently they have stopped accepting new users.

Thanks
for any help.

in general, once you have things working, the recommended method is to
mount by label or uuid.

It shows a NTSF formatted omega drive. It states read only. This much I
understand. I am taking a wild guess and thinking that it will show up a
an external drive under 'wine' -- I could be totally wrong in that
 assumption.

It may or it may not, but we're not interested in that. Since the
mount seems to have worked, you now need to look at /mnt using your
favorite file manager - anything from 'ls' to 'mc' to Nautilus, Thunar,
etc.

All the rest is information lost on me!!!

Don't know much about NTFS, but IIRC, the linux support (in particular
the vanilla in-kernel support) in incomplete, and insufficient for
certain repair operations, which is why you're being told to mount in
Windows, so that OS can do some housekeeping. Don't know how serious
such a message is likely to be, but if you're only mounting read-only,
you probably don't have much to lose. Famous last words - don't hold
me to them!

I thank you for your assistance. My expertise is in hardware repair not
software/command line issues so please bear with me.

Good luck, and report back on your findings (even a simple 'ls /mnt'
will be useful for a start).

I can't help you with desktop stuff, since I do all my mounting and
file-management via cli / tui (mc) tools. I have no idea if
repartitioning would make a difference, but it seems rather a drastic
step for such a simple thing as desktop visibility.

Sorry I can't help with the desktop stuff. I still recommend you check
if the data is there and accessible. This way, if you repost the

It may help a little to change the label to something not containing a
whitespace character. This may not be the source of your problem, but
it could be a cause of other problems. The architects of the *nixes
never really planned for spaces inside file names, I think. You can use
them, but some programs may be confused by them. Better to avoid it by
using hyphens, dots, and underscores.
