It's looking for this file: /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/openssl-1.0.0/engines/libgost.so If you're running a chrooted bind9, it can't find this library, obviously. The kluge for this at the moment is to recreate this directory tree under your chroot and copy libgost.so there. After I did that, bind9 now starts up OK. Grub-PC menu additions.
Hello all, I've been trying to include an install of PC-BSDs RC2 into the grub start up menu. Initially I installed it on /dev/sda but when it didn't pick up the two Debian installs, on the slave drive, and include them in the BSD boot menu, I reversed the drives, uninstalled and reinstalled grub-pc which recognised all installs . During the reinstall, the two Debian installs and Memtest86+ are picked up and included in the boot menu, but even though the 'unidentified linux install' on /dev/sdb is recognised, nothing registers on the Debian grub-pc boot menu. I have tried including two recommended boot entries for grub-pc, supplied by the PC-BSD handbook and their wiki, but nothing works. The menu entries in grub.config stay there after saving, I run update-grub afterward to get them registered, but still nothing in the grub boot menu. The syntax looks all wrong in comparison to the grub layout, so I thought that may be the problem. Can anybody cast any light? I know grub-pc recognises BSD kernels, so there must be a way. Thanks for any time and trouble. Graphics corruption with Radeon X1270 (RS690M)

There are situations that require you to run GUI based apps as root. For instance, I have to run Firefox/Thunderbird with admin priviledges in order to get them updated because they were installed system wide and plain users do not have the rights to run the upgrade routine and apply the delta patches. Of course, it does not mean I have to browse the web or keeping the MUA using the root session, I update the programs and quit ;-) Also, running an application as root is usually the fastest way to debug configurations issues with your current user. Another example: My main system only has two users (sm01 which is my plain user and root) so if a GUI application is behaving in the wrong way it's quicker to run it with gksu than creating a new user and test with it. I started with Slackware (2.2.0.1) and progressed to RedHat, then started using Debian, where I have been ever since. OP: Just remember that as you learn more, you might switch distros at some time. Don't worry too much about choosing the distro that will be best for you in the long run. Choose what is best for you right now. Maybe that's one of the hand-holding distros, or maybe it's Debian (which requires only slightly more learning than the hand-holding distros). For now, stick with the defaults because that's what most people will be able to help you with. In Debian's case, that would be the Gnome desktop. I don't use it, but I did for a long time and it's good. It makes some things easier than they would be if you just installed a window manager. Don't overwhelm yourself with new things. Take it one step at a time. -Rob -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-user-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of unsubscribe. Trouble? Re: Full Disk Encryption
Hi, I have been using full-disk encryption on my laptop for several years over several laptops. My current one is a Dell Latitude E6500 with a 2.66GHz Core2Duo P9600 with 4GB of RAM, and the lag from encryption is not noticeable. The way I did it was from the installer. I created a separate (and unencrypted) /boot, a swap and a large partition for encryption. Within the encrypted partition, I created an LVM volume group and created my filesystems within. I note, at this point, that if you want added security, you create your /boot on a USB thumb drive. This way, the machine will not even boot without this drive. I would also add that reiserfs3 had issues with multicore. I noticed that every time I rebooted my workstation, it would replay the journal, whether or not it had unmounted the filesystems cleanly. I found an article stating that it was due to reiserfs not playing nicely with the multiple cores, so you may want to consider another filesystem. I ended up going with ext4 until I get a chance to get familiar with btrfs or one of the other newer filesystems. --b On Sat, Nov 26, 2011 at 12:15 AM, J. Can't you see Freemind now available as a selectable option? Did you relogin? :-? After relogin in, nothing changed. If I right click on a file with the .mm extension gedit is shown as the first application, freemind as the second - there is an option to select other applications. And what happens when you select it from there? If I select other applications - either from that menu above - or by right clicking on the file and choosing properties then selecting the Open With tab and finally pressing the Other Applications button - the list I am presented with does not contain freemind. I seem therefore to have no way to set it as the default application Hum... Also, look at your ~/.local/share/applications/mimeapps.list and check if the corresponding mimetype appears. Not sure what you mean ~/.local/share/applications/mimeapps.list contains an entry that I have now edited as follows application/x-freemind=freemind.desktop; (it previously said applications/x-freemind=gedit.desktop;freemind.desktop;) and then logged out and back in. No change to any behaviour. mimeinfo.cache has the same line (the freemind only version), as does /usr/share/applications/mimeinfo.cache All looks to be right and still not working. Let's ask Google. I've found this: http://wiki.debian.org/MimeTypesSupport And more specifically to Freemind, this thread: How to properly register a program in KDE/GNOME http://lists.debian.org/debian-mentors/2009/11/threads.html#00330 But this is task for packagers/devels, a user should not do that work to make the filename extension (*.mm) is properly associated to the application. Re: Upgrading from Lenny to Squeeze
Oops! I accidentally sent this reply directly to Stephen. Sorry Stephen. My question was, considering what I have done, is it likely that things will 'just work' or is it more likely that I will have issues? I would not anticipate any major problems, given what you've done up to this point, provided you follow the directions in the release notes. My only suggestion would be to replace the Lenny backports kernels with standard Squeeze kernels. I did do that. After changing sources.list to point to Squeeze, I ran 'apt-get update; apt-eet upgrade' then I updated the kernel to an actual Squeeze kernel and updated udev and rebooted. After that I ran 'apt-get upgrade' again and rebooted again. I am not sure of the timing, but I think it was right after upgrading the kernel that my reboot started having issues. After it mounts the root partition, which it does without problems, it complains that it can not stat the swap partition, which is on LVM. If I just press ENTER to continue, it goes on just fine and initializes the swap and mounts all of my other partitions which are also on LVM in the same volume group. Right after mounting all of the partitions that it should, it then tries to mount all of my removable drives from /etc/fstab. All of those are are marked noauto, so they should not be getting mounted. Since there is nothing there to mount, I get dropped into a shell to fix things. Since none of those drive SHOULD be mounted I just Ctl-D to get out and the boot process continues on to the end successfully. The first issue seems to be a timing issue, as it mentions in the release notes. I have not figured out how to pass the 'rootdelay' parameter to the kernel, however. BTW, I am still using lilo to boot, not grub. The second issue just seems really strange, since all of those lines say 'noauto'. Finally, I did 'apt-get dist-upgrade', which kept me up way too late. I got lots of warnings about lines in /var/lib/dpkg/status having an invalid character in it. These all seem to have been referring to the line 'Config-Version: 3.1.4_57640_Debian_lenny' or 'Version: 3.1.4_57640_Debian_lenny' I grepped /var/lib/dpkg/status and found quite a few lines referring to lenny. Shouldn't these all have been changed since I did an update on Squueze repositories? Could these be referring to packages that are no longer in Squeesze and so still have lenny info? Since my wife uses this computer also and my daughter uses it for schoolwork, I am rather leery of trying another reboot now that I have done the dist-upgrade since it seems to be running fine at the moment. Sooner or later, though, I will have to do so and I would like to resolve these issues. I would appreciate any help, or ideas on this matter. Can't write to external usb drive as normal user despite efforts
