mentioned that I would need to edit the .xinitrc file and
replace the window manager with the kde setup program...
- where is .xinitrc? I have found xinitrc (w/o .) - is this the same
file?
Thanks in advance!

Hello all,
I just downloaded the 38MB file of the Wordperfect 8.0 prerelease...
I followed the directions given at the ftp site, namely:
1. download linuxgui8.tar.gz and then unzip the file
(gunzip filename.tar.gz)
2. untar the file (tar -xvf filename.tar)
3. execute the Runme file to
Hello all...
I'm relatively new to the whole linux thing, but I've been running
debian 1.3.1 for about 1 month now with no problems, EXCEPT that I
haven't been able to get X running smoothly with my ATI 3d rage II
+DVD video card... could only get 640x400 with very lame picture
quality. I
Hello everyone:
After many trials and tribulations, I have finally upgraded to
hamm... First, I installed Debian 1.3 from CD, then immediately wrote
my ppp script required to login to my server - worked great.
Immediately upgraded to latest stable version, THEN immediately

Hello all -
I just did a fresh install of slink on my machine, and now want to
slap netscape on there for web-browsing and e-mail My question is
which of the seemingly dozens of Netscape packages do I need to
install?
Thanks!
Hello all,
I just tried to compile 2.2.1 kernel and ran into a problem
Following the directions in
/usr/doc/kernel-source-2.2.1/debian.Readme, I installed the source
.deb, make menuconfig, make-kpkg clean, then make-kpkg

Hello,
I was messing around w/ FSTAB, and apparently erased the ro from

of boot-up errors
I've tried linux single at LILO, and I can login, but I can't edit

Howdy all -
I'm a relatively new user... When running X (KDE) as root (I was
configuring KDM), our power went out for a second, causing the
computer to reboot... as it was rebooting, the power went out again...
anyway, now when I type finger, I get a little table similar to

Is there a way to have bash include the current directory in the
prompt of bash? Actually, let me re-phrase that my root account
DOES include the current directory in the the prompt, but I have no
idea why or how... I've tried to copy my root's .bash_profile to my

Hello everybody
I'm using hamm with KDE, and occasionally, when using the KFM as a
web-browser, it just suddenly disappears when this happens, the
system will not let me start up another KFM (nothing happens when I
try to start a new one..) until I log out and log back in Is this

Hello everybody,
I just got my cdrom setup by modifying my fstab file (thanks for the
help!) so that it is user-mountable... Now I can mount it and read a
data-type cd... However, when I try to mount it when an audio cd is
in, it says it's not a proper filesystem (which I guess it's not...)
Is there any program or way to look at your video setting while in X
- for instance to see what color mode (bpp) you're in (I guess
xvidtune doesn't do that...) I'm running an ATI 3d rage II card, but
can only seem to use 8 bpp without getting these annoying vertical
lines of sketchiness on
I have a soundblaster awe64 (PnP) w/ a PnP BIOS...
I finally got access to the cd player (by adding myself to the audio
and disk groups - thanks!)... I also installed the awe-drv package...
then I ran gomconfig, where I was told by the computer that there is
no mixer support for the device...
Is KDE 1.0 available anywhere in *.deb format - does anyone know if
debian is going to continue releasing KDE? I have the old KDE
installed, and it's a little buggy - if debian is vetoing them, maybe
I should think about switching to Gnome? But is that anywhere near
ready for prime-time?
Hey there everybody,
After using KDE for a while, I've decided to ditch it and try
Gnome... my question is - How do I remove it so that EVERYTHING is
gone? This is my second attempt at running debian (had it running
earlier this year with KDE... when I tried to remove KDE via dselect,

Hello all,
I'm getting ready to upgrade from hamm to slink... (standard
packages, etc) Do I need to recompile the kernal or anything like
that... Make a new boot disk (how?)? What about LILO? What about
those obsolete packages - veto them or keep them? Any other
suggestions, comments?
Hello all,
I just totally wiped out my hamm system and did a fresh install of
slink (long story... and I must say the installation did not go as
smoothly as a hamm installation, especially X...) anyway, I used
dselect to download and intall xdm... it came up and running, but
with 2 problems:
