I am going to be installing Debian on a PS/2 in the very near future, and I did a quick boot with the 2.0 rescue disk and it seemed to find the ESDI controller alright and the hard disk, to some degree. I can't atest for how well it will boot because I only have 4 meg of ram and, needless to say,

Actuall,y you're not making any mistakes about window-managers at all. Window-manager don't have desktops for the most part. At least none of the ones you are using. Most of the window-managers use configuration files to setup buttons or shortcuts to programs through sime kind of menuing system,

Re: problem with my system includes

1999-05-20 Thread Robert Rati
Ya, that's pretty much what I did I believe and it works fine. There are already dirs of those names in /usr/include, so you'llhave to either delete them or rename them. I recommend renaming them as a precaution. I don't use debian packages for kernels anymore, so symlinking them to

No. 2.2.x kernels just have better smp support in them. Just turn off symetric multi-processing when you make the kernel. Rob On Thu, 20 May 1999, Pollywog wrote: Are the 2.2.x kernels for SMP systems only? I have a PentiumII

Kde questions

1999-05-25 Thread Robert Rati
I've recently switched to KDe to see what all the fuss was about. It's not bad, although I have a few questions. First, I right clicked on the clock at the lower right of the panel and clicked undock, to see what it would do. Well, the boarder around the clock disappeared and I can't get it

Re: apt's sources.list

I had this same problem and just concluded they had something screwed up in their Packages.list file. ACtually, I got the list alright, but dselect wouldn't d/l the files saying they weren't normal files or something like that. Just d/l the debs manually and install them.

Re: No screens found

I believe I've seen that error message before. It had to do with the Xserver not supporting the graphics card. Have you checked to see if there's an Xserver that matches you video card better? Also, what version of XFree are you running? If it's from ftp.debian.org or a major minor, you're

PCI modem

I was just given a PCI modem by a friend of mine and he calims it's a PNP modem but not a winmodem. I hope he's right, but I don't know how to tell if it's a winmodem. Debian sees the modem when I cat /proc/pci and calls it a serial interface card (same thing windows calls it until you give it

Re: OT: dual processor question

1999-06-07 Thread Robert Rati
Yes this is true, to some extent. YOu have to have two processors with the same stepping and revision in order to dual-proc them. I have heard though, that you can have two processors of different stepping and revision numbers and still multi-proc them, but your performance may suffer a little.

Well, probably the easiest way is to check with the manufacturer. How old is the card? You can try doing a pnpdumpo and see if your card is detected. If not, it's probably not PNP. Another way to tell is to try doing a modprobe, but that would involve you compiling a kernel probably. I'm going

Try reading the install documentation. It tells you all you need to know about installing the base system. From there, you download packages.gz files that have lists of packages and you select which ones you want. This is all taken care of in the installation process so all you need to do is
