I'm using DOSEMU right now because I'm trying to get to the bottom of a bug in
DOS Frotz. It crashes on real hardware and DOSEMU, but not DOSBOX.

Hey David, don't give up, i got Turbo C+ 3.0 working fine in dosbox by setting
ver to 6.00 in the dosbox.conf and using a real
MS-DOS COMMAND.COM from msdos 6.

The only reason I ever use dosemu is for serial port, modems or old FOSSIL
stuff. dosbox is a lot easier for games and programming.

I hope there's not some kernel issue with this, I really like my old stuff,
especially Vern Buerg's LIST.COM combined with semware Qedit Advanced. THE

Let us know how it goes, try TC on dosbox with the right command.com

That is really bad news, are you sure it's all programs, and not just programs

If the problem is only DPMI enabled programs, you can probably solve it with
some persistent effort.

>and then I'm told that the emulator is unstable and should be rebooted.

I've used dosemu for a long time, but not on stretch, so I can't test it right
now. It is tricky to setup, as most DOS environments always were.

>From what I recall, some programs will require vm.mmap_min_addr set to 0 in

you should do your own research before using this, it seems to be a security
risk on networked machines, or was at one point.
Not sure of the current state of things re: mmap_min_addr

Some older DOS programs have a plain 16 bit ver and a 32 bit DPMI ver, and some
have a switch to turn off use of DPMI. Some also
used an environment variable to limit or control the use of DPMI. There's also
a config option in dosemu.conf to set the base address.
# DPMI base address; default: auto
# If the default value fails, try 0x1000

# $_dpmi_base = (auto)

>Identical trouble was reported in https://bugs.debian.org/797378

That bug showed pkzip as the culprit, not all dos programs?

If it's the same bug, maybe you should follow the links and file your bug
against the kernel instead of dosemu?

Good luck, and have fun. Thanks for the heads up I will follow along in case I

DOSEMU DPMI unhandled exception 0e (it's back!)

2017-07-03 Thread David Griffith

When I start DOSEMU and use any DOS program, I get "DPMI: Unhandled
Exception 0e - Terminating Client" and then I'm told that the emulator is
unstable and should be rebooted. Running any program after that causes
DOSEMU to crash.

Identical trouble was reported in https://bugs.debian.org/797378 and
attributed to a kernel bug that was fixed in 4.2.x. My Stretch machines
are now running 4.9.x. What's going on here?

BUG DOSEMU I can't understand this but still exist

2011-04-22 Thread lemonnier
Hello Sir
I don't understand that Debian provides version
of dosemu_1.4.0
+svn.1999-2_i386.deb in stable packages.
So many people have found a bug with the
programs written in PASCALPrograms developed for
the real mode in turbo pascal work correctly.

But programs developed in 16-bit protected
(DPMI) don't work.

I have tried this version on dosemu with
different configarations of
ubuntu and it never works in Turbo Pascal

Can you tell me where does the bug come and in
any case dosemu_1.4.0
+svn.1999-2_i386.deb is not stable dosemu

Sincerely

I'm not sure what the difference between turbo pascal and any other version
is. However, what its saying is that you can't write to OS memory within
dosemu (with pascal?). So, if you try to access dma address space (or maybe
even elevate to a higher ring of the processor) it will fail.

Someone here might be able to give you better feedback. However I'd suggest
you look for a dosemu mailing list or other forum for that discussion.

Dosemu should work fine with DPMI memory handling - if configured properly.
Have you checked your dosemu.conf for its cpu_emu setting?

Dosemu broken after Lenny upgrade

Until today I have had no trouble using dosemu 1.4.0 with Lenny.
Yesterday however I upgraded Lenny. When I tried to open dosemu for the

I then got the user bang.

First, I would appreciate it if someone could tell me what those two

Second, could one of the packages upgraded yesterday break dosemu? The

I track testing and haven't had any troubles. My understanding is
that an official release consists of a snaphsot of testing, which
happened recently with etch. Of course, tracking testing is a
different upgrade path than moving directly from one stable release to
another.

There may have been changes in, e.g., the details of the configuration

Just as a suggestion. If you can use DOS under X, you could try dosbox
instead of dosemu. I have never had any problems with it, and didn't
need to configure anything.

Mr. Johnson,

My original question was to find out whether there is anybody on the

Since several people for various reasons mentioned Dosbox instead
Dosemu, I will try the former first before trying to get the latter to
work in an Etch box. When looking for a DOS emulator way back when I
found that Dosemu met my needs; whereas Dosbox did not then. Perhaps
Dosbox will do so now, as Dosemu is now an orphan project. For example,
Dosbox is still an Etch package; whereas Dosemu has apparently been
dropped. I will report back in due course.

enquiries if I were to make them.

It's still an example of a Bad Question.

If you had provided more detail, then someone else having the same
problem could find this thread and maybe see how you solved it.

You still haven't told us exactly what problems you are having. I
can get dosemu/freedos to work on my Sid system. (Well, it edits
AUTOEXEC.BAT, and runs MEM.)

A bug might also need to be filed against dosemu, dosemu-freedos or
xfonts-dosemu. Or maybe you need to install a package. Or both.

Hello Ken,

I don't use dosemu very much, but I have played with it, to the extent

file. I've played with both the debian package and a binary package
which is the one I have now. I've never tried any games.

It is precisely because I want to continue using WordPerfect 5.1 and
three other DOS based applications that I want to get either Dosemu or
Dosbox functional the two computers -- soon to be three -- where in the
last month I have installed Etch. I am not interested in games.

I have already mentioned that I was unable to get Dosemu working in one
box, actually my laptop. I was using version dosemu-1.3.3.tgz. After
configuration I ran it, first as my user. The following was returned:

You do not have the DOSEMU vga font installed and are running
remote X. You need to install the vga font on your _local_ Xserver.
Look at the readme for details. For now we start with an fixed font,

Earlier I had copied libplugin_X.so from my Sarge box (it was not
included in dosemu-1.3.3.tgz) and put it in the following location,
which is not where dosemu seemed to have looked for it:

/home/ken/dosemu-1.3.3/1.3.3.0/bin/libplugin_X.so

libplugin_term.so I do not have anywhere.

I then ran dosemu as root, the following was returned:

There is something wrong with your systemwide DOSEMU installation:
/usr/local/share/dosemu is not existing, but was configured to contain
  the DOSEMU distribution templates.

If Dosbox serves my purpose I will stop trying to get dosemu working.
Of course, if I find that Dosbox does not serve my purpose I will work
on Dosemu and report back in the next one-two weeks, when I have the time.

What happens when you install the Debian packages dosemu,

Nothing, because these three packages are not in the Debian
Etch/testing package repository, but are in Sarge/stable. Even so, in
my Sarge box I did not use them because I found the dosemu package in
Sarge unusable.

So, following Jan Stumpel's Dosemu for Dummies,
(http://www.jw-stumpel.nl/dosemu.html) in my Sarge desktop I configured
dosemu-1.3.3.tgz to use instead. Instead of freedos I used a legal
version of dos 6.22 I already had. I did not use xfonts-dosemu at all.

I used this setup to run WordPerfect shell 4, with WordPerfect 5.1 and
several other dos programs running inside it. It did all I wanted it to
do, even printing better than CUPS could do from other applications.

When earlier this month I installed Etch in another box, naturally I
wanted to run those same WP and other applications. This time I
configured dosemu-1.3.4.tgz to use instead to configure the later
version. I was able to get dosemu to start, with some messages which
did not inspire confidence that I had a flawless installation. However,
I did not have time to to see if this installation could do what I
wanted it to do.

Since I was and am time-stressed to get my laptop up and running I
decided simply to transfer to it the files and configurations already
working on the Sarge desktop. It was this transferred installation
which gave me the results already posted. My mistake was thinking that
I could transfer without change the same application from the Sarge
desktop to the Etch laptop.

In any event, I will not have time before next week either to see if I
can get a newly configured version of dosemu, presumably 1.3.4, to work
on the Etch laptop, or whether I can use dosbox instead. I will keep
the list posted on progress, but not before next week.

I suppose to do that I would have to add contrib to my
/etc/apt/sources.list. All it has now are etch main. Those packages
are not in the maincontrib section of the etch repositary.

If your PC is fast enough, why not use dosbox instead.

It uses cpu-emulation instead of vm86 mode, so it's a bit slower,
but it's a lot easier to get going (dos is built in, and it can
   access the linux file system).

Dosbox is great. I have been using it to play Microprose F1GP2 -
  vroom!

Tried to use it to display ansi art files that span more than a
screenful but it seems to lack the MORE command. There may be a way
to script this .. does python run on top of dos..? but since I never
used dos I'm not sure how to go about doing that.

On topic :-) Here is a post I did to my local lug, may be relevant.
there is a way to do this one time , works on reboot but I lost the
reply on that one.

I have found a solution, of sorts, as to why Dosemu does not run on
2.6.12 + kernels, basically anything after Debian Sarge. It seems that  2.6.12
the kernel folks added 'radomization_va_space' . This breaks dosemu
v.1.2.x and some other programs. The workaround for the v.1.2.x series
is to enter, as root, at a comand line of choice,:
'echo 0 /proc/sys/kernel/randomize_va_space'.  Dosemu now works in
Debian Etch...yea :-)

dosemu works for me on a .18 kernel where randomize_va_space == 1.

I wonder what the disconnect is.

Muchas Gracias.

  Subject: AYUDA DOSEMU CON NOVELL
  NETWARE

  para conocer un sistema nuevo, sino para legalizar todo el parque infórmatico;

You tried to create 3 diskettes with Compaq deskpro tools and
got error 207h or 519 (both are the same value).

 C:\format a:
 Unknown error. Error code: 519
 D:\DOSEMU\F10VP\SDOSbootsec.exe /W /F:bootdsk3 /D:A:
bootsec: could not perform WRITE operation. rc = 207H

This error code means: You tried to access a drive in classic
drive with at most 64k sectors style (drive is at most 32 MB)
and DOS replied you have to use DOS 3.31/newer style. Your
Compaq tools do not support that, it seems, at least not for
diskette.

$ apt-get install dosemu.

$ dpkg -i dosemu-freedos...blahblaah.

Y ya está.

Ejecutas :

$ dosemu -home

man nice
