Since cdrskin-1.5.2 you can inquire whether the drive announces its internal bus controller type and its firmware timestamp: cdrskin dev=/dev/sr0 --list_features | fgrep PhysInterface= cdrskin dev=/dev/sr0 --list_features | fgrep Date= I installed Debian "testing" on an external drive.
