It gave me an entirely separate mail engine. I have customers with
(legitimate) association mailing lists and in (small) part this lets
me split the load. SM could handle that load, but I also had major
issues with my SM configuration, which uses ASSP as an antispam
gateway in front of SM, and this complicated my life a fair bit.
Bypassing that setup and letting Imail be a ColdFusion-smtp-only
engine solved some annoying config problems between with that gateway
tucked into the picture.

Seems like it'd be trivial to write, hooking their svcUserAdmin.asmx
and svcDomainAliasAdmin.asmx (GetAliases and GetUsers). Yeah, it'd be
nice if they do it natively, but it looks like a 1 hour project to do
it "manually". Guess I wouldn't be too worked up about that.

It just seems so logical that since SM (a) uses XML and (b) provides
a gateway function, that they would provide a communication channel

Anyway, lacking that, and also missing some of the Declude/Imail

Re: [Declude.JunkMail] Imail 8.2 / smartermail

2005-04-28 Thread Dave Doherty
My comment refers to their SmartHost feature, which allegedly is a gateway
product.

But there is no way for the mailbox server to communicate to the SmartHost
what addresses are acceptable. Therefore, you need to script some stuff up
and use a different gateway. That makes the SmartHost feature just about
useless in my book.

Best to download a free copy of SmarterMail to evaluate for yourself.

But except for the advanced spam SmarterMail already had these "new"
features. Alternate port, On spartermail you can use a different alternate
port per domain. Automatic droping of connections in a dictionary attack
situation. SPF also was already in SmarterMail...

Second the comment about the web interface. Its as if grownups
designed it versus hobbyists. Sounds harsh but you have to see it in
action.

I still have a Declude Virus and Spam license. May bring back the
Virus as I always liked FProt but my antispam went to an ASSP gateway

fine job of it on its own I might add.

RE: [Declude.JunkMail] Imail 8.2 / smartermail

2005-04-28 Thread Shayne Embry
Overall we're happy with the combo. Hosting 81 domains/350 users and getting
ready to add another 100 or so accounts. We very much prefer SM to Imail.
Web interface alone is worth the switch, and we've been able to do some
nifty things incorporating automation and other .Net driven features into
our company site by using SM's web services.

There are still some BIG issues with Declude/SM that seem to be related to
file handling. In some instances, Declude's tests will run but the message
header and subject don't get modified; the message gets delivered as if no
tests were run. Declude acknowledges the problem and is working on it.

The only other major shortcoming, in our opinion, is the inability to
whitelist authenticated users; but we hear that SmarterMail will address
that in their next release.

So, it's not perfect yet (grin), but I'll still take it over Imail.

We were a Webtrends customer until their latest round of pricing change. We
were paying about $4K a year in maintenance costs - but than they changed
their pricing model as you indicate. It would have costed us about 25 times
our normal maintenance cost to continue with 7.0 due to our page view
volume. Long story short we are parting ways after our one year grace
period of 7.0 ends.

I can't really say I am sad - for a high volume site (90+ million page
views) I have always had issues keeping the product stable. Unless
everything was limited data corruption seemed to be a frequent issue. Boy
was I thankful for the archive function in it.

Sandy,
Only the arrogant fools at NetIQ could screw up something like Webtrends
which was once the best stats tool available.

And unless they have changed something recently (which would come as no
surprise) they used to transfer licenses no problem. We acquired a
company a couple of years ago that owned several copies and they faxed
forms to us to transfer the licenses to our company.

Re: [Declude.JunkMail] Imail 8.20

2005-04-28 Thread Matt
I guess one of the big questions that I would have would be what would
happen if I installed on a new server and then imported my registry
settings over to it. Where's the unlocked identifier stuff stored? I'm
sure there are many other things as well to be concerned about such as
what came up around here in the MAC address discussion with Declude and
SmarterMail...

Anyway, I guess I am kind of insulted that Ipswitch would move to do
this after sticking it to us. Based on a conversation that I had with a
lawyer friend of mine, he indicated that Ipswitch's first move to stop
offering upgrades for IMail for service agreement holders while just
simply re-bundling the product was likely indefensible. So where's the
key that we can use to keep them from screwing us?

I'm one of those guys that doesn't like to jump through ridiculous hoops
to use a piece of software. The only stuff that I don't pay for is
stuff that I can't justify spending money on, which means they aren't
mission critical or I am just testing stuff out and can't justify
purchasing them up front. Excessive protections on such software has a
negative effect with people like myself since I will probably not become
familiar with such software so they will likely never get my money.
It's like shrink-wrapping a book. I think that reasonable protections
should be in there such as personally identifiable license keys and even
phoning home, but I for instance have no clue as to how to migrate
Windows 2003 from one box to another without doing more research, and I
would hate to have to do this in an emergency. The same goes for
IMail. If everyone was responsible about this stuff I wouldn't be
concerned but that clearly isn't the case.

I'm also very much against software and hardware being sold under a
non-transferable license. I will avoid such things whenever possible
now. If software isn't transferable, it should be sold as a service and
not as a piece of software, and hardware should be leased. To give the
impression of ownership by calling it otherwise is wrong, and I have my
doubts about the legality of some such provisions in boxed EULA's. I
was on the phone yesterday with WebTrends where they told me that my
copy of their software wasn't legitimate because I wasn't the original
owner and they don't transfer licenses...this is the same company that
moved from differentiating versions/prices of their software based on
functionality to one that was based on the number of profiles that you
had configured, to now basing it on the number of page views that their
reports generate. They even lock you out of their KB unless you have a
support contract with them...Egad! I say let them rot! Although their
software is generally very good, like Ipswitch they are getting killed
by much lower prices software that is less restrictive, in fact
SmarterStats is one of their competitors for a fraction of the price.
They won't survive doing business like that. Even Cisco
risks/experiences a loss of market share, and when that happens, they
will be so deep in the doo-doo that they wouldn't be able to afford to
back away from the non-transferable licenses.

Thanks for pointing that out, Nick.

It's the lack of Ipswitch documentation and discussion regarding the
implementation of Aladdin's technology that bugs me.

Aladdin themselves are a well-known and well-respected company.

message load by about 5%.

Anyway, lots of stuff that I've
been waiting for - now the question is, will I dare to upgrade before
8.2.5 is available .

• Secure Socket Layer for POP, IMAP, SMTP.
• SPF - IMail connection filtering
• SMTPD is now multi-threaded and has
been re-designed for better performance and stability.
• SMTPD can now listen on all IP addresses or
only those configured.
• IMail no longer uses Winsock 1.1. All programs
now use Winsock 2.
• SMTPD can now block connections after max
invalid recipients reached.
• SMTPD will close a connection after the
maximum number of invalid recipients have been reached.
• Support for additional listen port in
SMTPD

I
agree, Andy, those features caught my eye too.  But so
did:

I
really want the multithreaded SMTPD, but I'll be waiting a good while before
trying this version.  The block connections after x bad recipients may be
enough incentive for me to finally implement Sandy's
Exchange2Aliases!

There is really no problem posting this to the
JunkMail list. But, since it is specifically an IMail problem, make sure it is
at least cross-posted to the IMail list also.

These types of errors are not related to
Declude. Authentication is handled directly with IMail during the SMTP

  No, Declude has not yet
been tested with Imail 8.2, although we expect to begin some testing
very shortly. We have been in the process of resolving some
outstanding issues and preparing to do an interim release. It would
have been counter-productive to introduce a new IMail platform in the
midst of all of this. We are aware of a problem with one customer who
has tried to use Declude with the beta of IMail 8.2 (attachment
corruption). This customer also had problems with smtpd32 repeatedly

Wow ...

this is the FIRST time in very many years that I actually
am pleased what they added.

Does anyone know if the "SPF connection filtering" truly is
DURING the SMTP conversation? If so, will it by bypassed if SMTP AUTH is
used? That alone would receive my message load by about
5%.

Anyway, lots of stuff that I've been waiting for - now the
question is, will I dare to upgrade before 8.2.5 is available
.

• Secure Socket Layer for POP, IMAP, SMTP.• SPF -
IMail connection filtering • SMTPD is now
multi-threaded and has been re-designed for better performance and
stability.• SMTPD can now listen on all IP addresses or
only those configured.• IMail no longer uses Winsock 1.1. All programs now use Winsock 2.• SMTPD can now block connections after max invalid recipients
reached.• SMTPD will close a connection after the
maximum number of invalid recipients have been reached. • Support for
additional listen port in SMTPD

I upgraded to v8.2 this morning and have
had no issues.  I’m running Declude Virus and Junkmail v2.0.6.

I upgraded yesterday to Imail 8.2 and so
far the phones aren't ringing off the hooks.  No reported problems from
any of our users.  I've tailed the logs and they all seem normal.  I
am running Declude Junkmail Pro/Virus Standard/Hijack 2.0.6.

Scott,

No, Declude has not yet been tested with Imail 8.2, although
we expect to begin some testing very shortly. We have been in the process of
resolving some outstanding issues and preparing to do an interim release. It
would have been counter-productive to introduce a new IMail platform in the
midst of all of this. We are aware of a problem with one customer who has tried
to use Declude with the beta of IMail 8.2 (attachment corruption). This
customer also had problems with smtpd32 repeatedly going down, although this is
not likely related to Declude.

As soon as we have started testing and have any feedback
regarding the results, we will post them for you. If any of you have any
feedback you would like to provide to us, we would appreciate your letting us
know about it. Thanks.
